Medical devices group at UIET granted patent on wearable glove device

For Detailed News-

Medical Devices group from Design Innovation Centre at UIET, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been granted a patent on the invention titled- WEARABLE APPARATUS FOR DETERMINING GONIOMETRIC READINGS OF A BODY PORTION OF A SUBJECT “. Its a device designed and fabricated within the lab at UIET in consultation with physicians which would ease diagnosis and early detection of finger/hand related joint disorders. This device is IoT enabled which is its unique novelty apart from the design and is particularly useful for real time and remote sense monitoring, due to which patient need not visit a physician physically for his/her consultation.

A vibrant team of students including Rashi, Sahil, Varun and Poojita from different engineering branches were ably led by faculty investigators Dr. Prashant Jindal from Mechanical Engineering and Dr. Mamta Juneja from Computer Science and Engineering for developing this invention, that took more than 3 years.

This invention was fully funded by MHRD, Design Innovation Centre, which went through different stages of progression including National and International events organized by Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), wherein it bagged 3rd prize out of 3400 other ideas. This invention has also been granted a seed funding of Rs.4 Lacs by AICTE for upgrading it into a start up

Around 60121 students took Online Even Semester Exam today

Around 60121 students of Undergraduate/Post Graduate/Other Professional Courses including USOL/Private appeared today in the ongoing even semester online examinations being conducted by Panjab University, informed Dr. Jagat Bhushan, Controller of Examination, PU. Total of 216 exams were conducted in 2 slabs. COE informed that the exams went off smoothly without any issues.

PATENT GRANTED OUT OF COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH BETWEEN PANJAB UNIVERSITY AND PUNJAB ENGINEERING COLLEGE

A patent entitled “Improved Calcium Orthophosphate for Biomedical Applications and Method Thereof” was granted on 16.7.2021 to Panjab University and Punjab Engineering College. The product is an outcome of research collaboration between Dr.Seema Kapoor, Professor of Dr. SSBUICET, P.U. and Dr. Uma Batra, Professor& Head, Dept. of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, PEC. They initiated research collaboration in the field of Biomaterials in the year 2009 informed Dr.Kapoor.

The technical advancement lies in synthesizing mesoporous calcium orthophosphate using a facile and novel technique where inclinically important elements potassium and siliconare co-substituted optimally to attain good bio-resorption activity that stimulates the bone repair and regeneration, told Dr.Batra. The synthetic mesoporous calcium orthophosphate has potential usage for ingeniously development of bone scaffold, bone void filler, bone cements, coating or constituent of bio composites, bone graft or bone substitute biomaterial land for drug and gene delivery. Some important applications include orthopaedic surgery, dentistry and cosmetic surgery.

Dr.Batra further stated that the method of synthesizing the mesoporous calcium orthophosphate can be scaled up to commercial scale to be manufactured by pharmaceutical industries. The material of the said patent is totally synthetic and developed from the chemicals so that it does not cause any kind of an infection in the body. The cost effectiveness comes from the fact that the material has been developed indigenously in the research lab and it has improved functionality as compared to the imported products, averred Dr.Kapoor.

Lecture on Relevance of Museums in the Digital Age at PU

A web lecture titled “Relevance of Museums in the Digital Age” was jointly organized by the Departments of Geology, Anthropology, Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archeology, Art History and Visual Arts, Botany and Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh.  

           Shri Shakti Sinha, Director of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Policy Research and International studies  emphasized the need to use technology to enhance visual experience of the visitors in the museums.In this era of virtual communication, it is imperative to provide a vibrant virtual museum.

            Every museum has a story to tell and it is very important for every viewer of the gallery to get involved with those virtual spaces. He also highlighted how the digital technologies like hologram are opening up new dimensions to the museum experience.

Webinar on Science Technology and Innovation at PU

To sensitize policy-makers, academicians and researchers, about technology transfer, commercialization and various Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) models, DST- Centre for Policy Research (CPR), Panjab University, Chandigarh organized today a webinar on the theme of “Science Technology and Innovation (STI) Based Public-Private Partnerships in India: Global Innovation & Technology Alliance (GITA) an exemplary PPP model”.

            Mr. Rahul Kulshreshtha, Head, Strategic Project Management, Global Innovation & Technology Alliance (GITA), New Delhi highlighted the imperative roles played by GITA, to obviate the gaps in the current innovation system of our country in comparison to the Global innovation system. GITA is an organization set up under PPP mode by partnering of Technology Development Board (TDB), Government of India and India’s apex industrial association Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The joint venture is focusing on funding projects, capacity building and creating sustainable ecosystems, while identifying various bottlenecks to attain flexibility of government policies for enhancing R&D efficacy and spreading awareness among various stakeholders for the same.

            Prof. Rajesh Gill, Dean Research, in her address mentioned an hour’s need of ventures on PPP models to have synergy with industries for having replica and implementation of research projects with a social impact.

            Prof. Nirmala Chongtham, Coordinator, DST-CPR at Panjab University Chandigarh emphasized the significance of teamwork of academicians, researchers and industrialists for enabling =PPP in plugging India amongst global rankings. She also added that funding agencies also sometimes get incentivized through brand names and avoid risky behaviour in accepting novel ideas, which acts as a gap in proliferating an innovative project.

            A significant view on exploring PPPs for revamping Indian STI terrain was shared by Dr. Rakesh Tuli, Senior Research Advisor & J C Bose Fellow, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr. Shishir Shrotriya, Councillor of S&T, Embassy of India, Moscow Russia.  

            The webinar was attended by faculty members, researchers of the university and industry people. The webinar aimed at motivating and guiding Indian researchers, academicians, industries and entrepreneurs about the significance of PPP models for scientific innovations.

Tree Plantation at PU

A Tree Plantation drive was organised by the International Hostel and Florence Nightingale Girls Hostel 8, Sec 25 (South Campus), Panjab University.

          Shri C D Singh (I.F.S.), Deputy Director General and Shri K Z Bhutia (I.F.S.), Deputy Inspector General of Forest (Central) at Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, graced the occasion as Chief Guests. Dean Student Welfare, Prof. S K Tomar, Dean Student Welfare (Women) Prof. Meena Sharma and Associate Dean Student Welfare Prof. Ashok Kumar presided over the function.

          Shri C D Singh and Shri K Z Bhutia appreciated the plantation drive initiated by the Panjab University and carried out by the Horticulture department in association with various hostels and departments of PU. They lauded the efforts made by PU in increasing its Green cover by planting numerous trees, and stated that tree plantation played a very important role in saving the environment from the adverse effects of the climate change. They stressed upon the need to sensitize the youth of today towards the ill effects of climate change and the advantages of tree plantation. The students were encouraged to plant more trees and adopt them as well.

Poster making Competition by UIFT, PU

University Institute of Fashion Technology and Vocational Development(UIFT&VD), Panjab University held a poster making competition for fashion students of Panjab University and other Colleges and Universities. This event was held at UIFT&VD via virtual mode for creating awareness on topics of sustainability, going green and advocating the theme of Living in A Plastic-Free Paradise- a pledge to protect our environment.

          Dr. Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson and Dr. Nikita, organiser of the event, invited hand-made and digital poster entries from students of Panjab University. The students were required to creatively display the plight upon usage of plastic and benefits of a plastic-free life. Entries were received from B.Sc. and M.Sc. students of Sarooprani Government College (Amritsar), SBBSMGC sukhanand (Moga), Hindu Kanya Mahavidyalaya (Jind), Govt. Home Science College (Chandigarh), IIS Deemed to be University (Jaipur) and UIFT&VD, PU, Chandigarh.

Cleanliness cum Plantation Drive Launched at PU

A Cleanliness cum Plantation Drivewas launched at Palm Garden by Department of NSS in collaboration with Horticulture division of Panjab University(PU). Prof. Ashwani Koul, Programme Coordinator, NSS, at the outset, thanked Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice chancellor, PU for his able guidance and untiring support for such initiatives. Prof. Koul shared about the present drive for the maintenance and upkeep of all parks and gardens of PU. Further, he mentioned that there are eleven more such drives that will be held in the months of July and August, 2021.

            Programme officers inspired the participants to maintain cleanliness in surroundings and urged the volunteers to propagate about importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene in their lives.

            The event was attended by all programme officers, NSS volunteers and staff of Horticulture division. Keeping covid appropriate behaviour into consideration, the samplings of various varieties of palm were planted at palm garden by Prof. Koul and his team.

COVID appropriate behavior and need to get vaccinated must to avoid the third wave —-Randeep Guleria

The Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a webinar on the theme “Promotion of Scientific Temper among People of India”, today, to spread awareness amongst general public about the current pandemic situation. 

Prof. Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS, New Delhi spoke on the topic “ What the pandemic has taught us and where do we go from here?” Dr. Guleria started his talk by explaining the factors which were responsible for an increase in the number of pandemics in the 21st century. He discussed about the one health concept and emphasized that there is a need to look at holistic health i.e. the health of animals, plants and human together rather than humans alone in order to avoid any future pandemics. 

Further in his talk, Dr. Guleria discussed about the reasons behind the emergence of devastating second wave and that there is an urgent requirement to invest in public health services. He emphasized that COVID-19 appropriate behavior i.e. wearing of masks, regular washing of hands up gradation of vaccination drive can to a large extent help in avoiding the speculated third wave of the infection. 

He also discussed about the different vaccines available in the country, their efficacy, the development of new vaccines and the major problems associated with vaccines such as the vaccine hesitancy and their equitable distribution. Dr. Guleria concluded his talk by mentioning that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over nor it is going to end very soon. The people need to adhere to COVID appropriate behavior and need to get vaccinated in order to avoid the third wave.

Dr. Deepak K. Rahi, Chairman, gave a brief overview of the program and briefly discussed how during this past year, the COVID-19 pandemic had turned our lives upside down and has changed not just the way we live and work but also how we think and behave.

This was followed by a brief note by Prof. Prince Sharma, Former Dean Science and the organizing secretary of the webinar who discussed about the current pandemic situation and also introduced the guest speaker to the audience. 

The webinar was coordinated by Mr. Khem Raj Thakur, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology.

The talk was  followed by an interactive session where in the queries put forward by the audience were answered by Dr. Guleria. The webinar ended with a vote of thanks by Prof. Prince Sharma.

Hunar 2021 at USOL

University School of Open Learning, Panjab University, Chandigarh, today organized its sixth annual cultural event Hunar, a platform that gives students to explore their talents, included creative items and activities such as writings of poetry and essay, poster making, dance, singing, poetry recitation, photography and filmmaking. Keeping in view the pandemic norms of social distancing and self-isolation, the event was organized online. The students had emailed as many as two hundred entries through PDFs and videos.

            The Chairperson, Prof Madhurima Verma, introduced the chief guests Prof S. K. Tomar, the Dean Students’ Welfare (Men) and Prof Meena Sharma, Dean Students’ Welfare (Women). Referring to the celebration of the Golden Jubilee year of USOL, Prof Verma highlighted the distinctive services rendered by the institution in the field of open learning and education.

            In his address, Prof Tomar congratulated the organizers for the event in the difficult times of the Covid and extolled the efforts of the students. Invoking the landmark mythical character of Eklavya, a dalit, Prof Tomar called him the first distant learner as he mastered the skill of archery staying away from his teacher Dronacharya.  He also called upon to institute a judicious balance between the three coordinates of education—the teacher, the taught and the study material.

            Prof Meena Sharma appreciated the event and called it nothing less than a stress buster and confidence booster for the students as the preparation of and engagement with the creative-cultural items distanced them from the environment suffused negativity triggered by the covid. The judgment of each creative item was prepared by a team of three faculty members. 

            Eight teachers including Prof Neeru, Prof Harsh, Prof Praveen, Prof Sukhpreet, Dr Kuljeet, Dr Parveen, Dr Kamala and Dr Richa gave a comprehensive introduction to each creative item and presented the judgment by making a declaration of the first, second, third position and consolation prizes. As many as 40 students were declared as prize winners.  The two prize winning students Mr Gopi and Ms Anand Priya shared their enriching experiences regarding the preparation of their respective items.

            The coordinator of the event, Dr Ravinder Kaur Dhaliwal and co-coordinator Dr Reena Chaudhari, along with a dedicated team of faculty members, put strenuous efforts to organize the event. 

            Dr Sucha Singh provided the technical support to conduct the event. Mr Sudhir Baweja conducted the event eloquently and Dr Kamala Sandhu proposed a vote of thanks.
