International World Bamboo Day Celebration 2021

DST-Centre for Policy Research (CPR) at Punjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with World Bamboo Organization, USA successfully organized a virtual webinar for the celebration of International World Bamboo Day 2021 on September 18 (Saturday). The theme of the webinar was Scope of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in Bamboo Sector.

Eminent speakers from various national and international organizations shared their thoughts and approach towards proliferating bamboo for sustainable development and consumption in India. Susanne Lucas, the Executive Director, World Bamboo Organization (WBO), USA shared a special message on the bamboo and role of WBO to promote it worldwide.

The speakers showcased various technologies, applications and utility of Bamboo. They also deliberated upon the issues on policy perspective in India and emphasized that India can be a leader in the global market. They also deliberated that in coming future, if farmers in India will focus on growing bamboo and commercializing it worldwide, they can contribute to address the economic challenges being faced by Indian farmers. According to Prof. Nirmala Chongtham, the World Bamboo Ambassador from India and Coordinator of DST-CPR at PU, Chandigarh, an agreement has been signed between the WBO and Vietnam government on 18th September to hold the 4th World Bamboo Workshop in Vietnam in 2022.

UIPS commenced the celebrations of National Pharmacovigilance Week

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences successfully marked the beginning of virtual weeklong celebrations on the occasion of National Pharmacovigilance Week from 17th September to 23rd September. The celebrations began with a webinar on “Pharmacovigilance Basic Method Practices and Pharmacovigilance Programme of India” by Professor Bikash Medhi, Coordinator – PGIMER Pharmacovigilance Centre Regional Resource and Training & Technical Support Centre for North India; Professor, Department of Pharmacology and Additional Medical Superintendent (AMS), Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, on 18th September 2021.

Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson, UIPS briefed the audience about the theme “Pharmacovigilance Programme of India: The Current Initiative Towards Patient Safety”. Professor Poonam Piplani, Convener, Lecture organizing team of UIPS, introduced the distinguished guest speaker.

Professor Bikash Medhi shared that every drug has adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and it is important to look for ways to minimise them and take maximum benefits. 5-10% of the hospital admissions are attributed to adverse drug reactions, out of which 0.3% are fatal in nature. He enlightened the audience about the World’s biggest Thalidomide tragedy that instigated the Pharmacovigilance Programme worldwide, and about the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) which is largely involved in monitoring the safety profile of medical products used in India.

The webinar served as an extensive platform for communication & knowledge enrichment of the various stakeholders in the field of safety of medical products for the ultimate benefit of the patient.

MCC holds workshops on waste segregation & personal hygiene

Chandigarh, September 17:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, on Friday, conducted a capacity building workshop at conference hall, MCC building for door to door waste collectors regarding collection of garbage in segregated manner and personal hygiene.

While addressing the door to door waste collectors, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh today said that they are the soldiers of MCC, working tirelessly even in this pandemic to keep the city clean. She said that without the dedication and determination of waste collectors the targets of segregation may not be achieved. She said that the door to door waste collectors are the integral part of the solid waste management and it is their prime duty to collect the garbage from the households in segregated form only.

She said that from all waste generated nearly a fourth of this waste is plastic or paper and total waste could get capped at 20 per cent of the current quantity if measures are taken to segregate and correctly dispose that waste, at the waste generation point.

She further said that this workshop under Swachh Bharat Mission has given them an opportunity for education and awareness of the waste collectors. Nearly 85 door to door waste collectors participated in the workshop. Aiming for betterment, such capacity building workshops will be carried out on regular bases, she added.

Lecture on Right to Information by Department of Laws, PU

Department of Laws, Panjab University organized a guest lecture on Right to Information. The lecture was presided over by Sh Shiv Raman Gaur, Director of Higher Education, DAVCMC, New Delhi as the chief guest who is also an alumnus of Department of laws, Panjab University. The lecture was conducted in the presence of Devinder Singh, Chairman, Department of laws, Panjab university, Prof. Jyoti Rattan and other faculty members,  Panjab University. 

Sh Shiv Raman Gaur, extended his gratitude to the educationists of Panjab University and referred Prof. Devinder Singh as his former teacher during his college years. He Shiv Raman Gaur, stressed upon the usage of the sections of Right to Information Act, by linking it with common life examples.  He also emphasized on the practical application of the these sections and it’s interpretation. The esteemed guest , also gave a reference of Section 6(3) of Right to Information Act, 2005 which talks about Public Authority obligations.  He shared some of his personal experiences relating to the groundwork reality of the act which gave a better insight to the students about the working of Right to Information as an act. Few of the real life examples quoted by him also gave the students an idea about what constitutes the subject matter of Right to Information and what needs to be excluded. He also encouraged the students to employ research methods in order to gain a better understanding of  Right to Information Act .

Prof. Devinder Singh, Chairman, Department of Laws while explaining the importance of Right to Information, stressed on the relevance of the Act in today’s era, and traced it’s development over the years. 

Earlier, Prof. Jyoti Rattan in her welcome address highlighted the importance of International scenerio of Right to Information  by mentioning United Nation freedom of Information Principles and 16th global position of Indian RTI Act.

TWO P.U. PHARMA PROFESSORS HONOURED

Two professors of University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), namely, Prof Bhupinder Singh Bhoop and Prof Om Prakash Katare, of Panjab University have been felicitated with Pharma Excellence and Pharma Recognition Award, respectively, on Teacher’s Day, 5th September, 2021 by PHARMA LOK, an organization of eminent pharmaceutical professionals of India.

            Globally acclaimed for his scientific work on Pharma Quality by Design (QbD), Nanomedicine and Computational Pharmaceutics, Prof Bhoop has to his credit nearly 410 publications, including 16 books with an H-index of 52, 7 patents and 3 technology transfers. A widely travelled scientist, he has delivered over 380 talks in India and several countries abroad, and have trained thousands of industrial scientists on QbD paradigms. Former Chairperson-UIPS, Deal Alumni Relations –PU, Dean Faculty Pharm Sciences, and Member University Syndicate & Senate, Professor Bhoop’s research work has fetched him with numerous international and national awards, accolades and fellowships, including the one from the Vice-President of India.

            Prof. Om Prakash Katare is a world-renowned scientist in liposomal drug delivery technology. He has had honour of serving top positions in PU like Chairperson-UIPS, Dean-Faculty Pharm Sciences, Chairman-IAEC, and Director- Research Promotion Cell, PU. Till date, he has brought forth over 240 quality publications, 4 edited books, 10 international and national patents and commercialization of 5 industrials technology transfers of novel drug delivery systems. On the basis of his research work and technology development and transfers of several nanostructured and liposomal technologies, he has been bestowed upon with numerous awards including the unique distinction of being honoured by President of India with DBT-Tech Transfer Excellence Award.

PU Psychology observed World Suicide Prevention Day

Department of Psychology, Police Administration and Dept. of Prison, Chandigarh Administration observed today the World Suicide Prevention Day  (Online).

Sh Praveer Ranjan-IPS, DGP of Chandigarh Police inaugurated the event and delivered presidential address by saying the Suicide among Youth is increasing and it must be focussed by every corner of society. Today’s youth are facing very peculiar challenges in term of career, education and ongoing uncertainty toward life. Further, he referred to the Crime Record Bureau data pertaining to increased rates of suicide which is increased 3.4% during 2019. He added that Youth are more vulnerable and it is a serious matter of concern. He informed that lot of Suicide Help lines are functional still the numbers are increasing as awareness about the existing systems to prevent suicide need to be enhanced. He shared that 51 number of suicides were committed in Chandigarh  in the year 2021, out of which, 15 were female and 38 were male. In the year 2020, there were 151 suicides in Chandigarh.

Sh, Omvir Singh, IPS, Adl. Inspector general of Prison said that the role of psychologists and psychiatrists is well demanded when a person faces conflicted situation, unrest among youth career issues, family issues and academic problems remained unsolved. Majority of today’s youth are not sharing their issues amongst peers, parents and teachers which is the main cause of their emotional conflicts.   

Dr. Dalip Singh delivered the key note address and emphasized on very important role of Emotional Intelligence in contemporary uncertainty. He added that the suicide happens in the presence of negative emotions and when we are emotionally weak and, unable to bear the amount of stress. He added that Govt should include mental training to face challenges of life in the curriculum at school and college levels.

Dr. Dinesh Kataria, Prof and Head of Psychiatry, Lady Harding Medical College in his address said that the emotional turmoil and non-directional thought  is one of the main cause of suicides among youth. Depression is among the top causes in India and males have higher rate of successful suicides and women have higher rate of attempted suicide. The remedies to prevent suicides include education, positive role of media, remove social stigma, availability of screening and assessment, social awareness etc. Mental Health must be considered at par with physical health.

Dr. Roshan Lal, Chairperson, Department said that “We are Born to Live not to Leave”. Adversities in human life is the integral part of our life so everyone must have that level of resilience to adapt.

International speakers- Mr Matt Perelstein CEO, Co-Founder, EQ4Peace Worldwide, USA stressed upon the existing socio-economic heterogeneity among masses. People lacking peace of mind with poor emotional quotient is one the main reason for committing suicide.

Prof Afseen from The University of Punjab-Lahore also shared her views and said suicide is very serious issue due to psycho-socio-economical as well others factors.

Prof N.S. Tung Pro-Vice Chancellor, SGT University Gurgaon moderated the Panel session in which six speakers from India and Abroad including young psychiatrist Dr. Neilofor, from Telangana shared their expertise and discussed the role of society is important to eradicate the suicide

Prof H.K Chhabra expressed the vote of thanks.

All present took oath to fight against the suicide and creating hope through action to train the people to Live Not to Leave

Chandigarh, September 9:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has awarded the contract for lifting of dead animals and carcasses from within the limits of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.

In this regard, the citizens can register their complaints on the helpline No. 0172-2787200 & on email-id [email protected]. For this service, no fees will be charged by the contractor. Citizens are therefore, requested not to pay any fee to the contractor or its employee. Any demand by the contractor should be brought to the notice of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. Co-operation of the citizens is solicited in keeping the city beautiful clean.
