Today, NSS volunteers of Department of Evening Studies – Multi Disciplinary Research Centre Panjab University Chandigarh performed their third activity i.e.cleanliness drive after the students election, under the guidance of Chairperson, Prof.Gurpal Sandhu NSS Director, Dr. Navdeep Sharma and NSS Programme officer Dr. Nirmal Singh. The area cleaned included the Department of Evening Studies, along with the parking area. The activity began at 8:30 a.m. and around 40 volunteers contributed to it, which included the students from B.A., B.Com. and M.A. courses. The volunteers showed their dedication by performing the activity in an efficient manner.

Hindi Vikas Parishad organized function in the memory of Dr. Paresh, a renowned poet, writer and an eminent Professor at the Department of Hindi, Panjab University. He was an alumnus of this Department, a student and research scholar of Aacharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi. Dr. Paresh also held UGC Professor Emeritus fellowship.
The function was presided over by Dr. Shankar ji Jha, Dean of University Instruction, Prof. Bhupendra Brar, Former Dean of University Instructions and Dr.Ramesh Kuntal Megh, an eminent Hindi writer.
Dr. Raj Kumar Malik conceptualised and coordinated the program. The programme was started with the Saraswati Vandana by Harish Sharma, a well-known devotional singer. The select invited poets included Ratan Chand Ratnesh, Rajwanti Mann, Gurmit Bedi, Bhupendra Brar, Satyapal Sehgal, Prasoon Prasad , Aditya Niyogi, Vijaya Singh, Vijay Kapoor, Babita Kapoor, Balvender Bhushan, Anita Surbhi, Kumar Krishna, Daljit Kaur, Ritu Bhanot, Chander Trikha, Vibha Upbheja Ray, Phool Chand Manav, Prem Vij, Sushil Hasrat Narelvi, Vimal Kalia Vimal, Praveen Sudhakar, Jaipal Thakur, Dr. Arvind Drivedi, Dr Naveen regaled the audience with their choicest poems. The kavi darbar was attended by Faculty members from various disciples like English, Microbiology, Public administration, political science and persons from various walks of life.
Dr Latika Sharma, Professor, Department of Education and daughter of Dr Paresh presented the vote of thanks. Books by Prof Paresh were on display which the participants collected with literary enthusiasm.

Yoga through the lens of Western Medicine’, a lecture combining the discipline of yoga and medical science was presented by Dr Pashupati Steven Landau from the United States. Organised by Centre for Swami Vivekananda Studies & Department of Physical Education, Panjab University, Acharya Landau gave a comprehensive presentation on the subject. He began by introducing the audience to the Patanjali yoga system, and then described the benefits of various types of yoga such as Karma yoga, Gyana yoga, Bhakti yoga, Hatha yoga, and Rajadhiraja yoga.
He stressed the importance of vegetarianism, saying it has positive effects on health, morality, ecology, and it has subtle effect on the mind. Regular practice of yoga not only improves health, it reduces chances of disease, and helps to get rid of depression, anxiety, and stress. After teaching yoga in prisons for over 25 years, he found that criminal tendency among inmates decreased.
There was also a detailed discourse on the chakras and how to awaken the kundalini. During the lecture, the Acharya also demonstrated several yogic asanas.There is an interesting story behind how he got hooked on to yoga. At the age of eleven or twelve, his mother gave him a book on yoga, and that book transformed his life forever. He learnt yoga from several masters. He has been practising and teaching yoga since 1971. He has trained people in India, Jamaica and the United States. He has been teaching for 25 years in prisons, hospitals, mental health centers, schools, health food stores and yoga centers.
Along with him Acharya Shambhu Shivananda Avadhuta, a distinguished scholar and gold medalist alumnus of Panjab University shared his experiences with the audience.
The lecture was presided over by Prof Shankar Jha, D U I, Officiating Vice Chancellor, PU and it was facilitated by Prof. Gurmeet Singh, Chair Maulana Abdul Kalam and Prof. Nandita Singh, Dean International Students.

Department of Life Long Learning and Extension in collaboration with University Institute of Fashion Technology organized the celebration of International Literacy Day, here today. More than 35 students from various departments of University participated to mark the celebration. The main objective of the celebration was to connect the literacy with themes propagated by the Worthy Prime Minister of India, Mr. Modi, “Padega India to Badega India”. In this context, Poster Making Competition and Awareness Lectures were held at the Department.
Prof. Sween from the Department highlighted literacy as an essential parameter to progress in ones’ career. Here she quoted the importance of Digital Literacy in the career of youth. She emphasized that Digital Literacy Skill and Awareness can provide wings to their career by exploring information on the Net. She also briefed students that Panjab University has an access to many of National and International Journals at PU Website which can connect them to explore vast knowledge and information. While speaking on the occasion, Dr. Prabha Vig stressed on Multi-linguism and Students. She made students aware that in India there are 19,500 languages and out of them 22 were considered as official. She further enlightened that the current scenario of World demands to be Multi-linguistic because 4% of the World Population do not reside in their country of their birth. She further added that Panjab University provide education in multiple languages by offering degree, certificate and diploma courses in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Urdu, French, German.
Dr. Parmjit Singh Kang, Chairperson, DLLL&E enlightened university students to act and work on a motto, “Live, Learn and Thrive.” Here, he requested students to work voluntarily to spread the message of literacy and its benefits. He emphasized that students must strengthen their quality of education by cultivating reading interest in them, so as to meet global level needs and requirements.
At the last, Poster Making Competition was held to explore the variation of literacy benefits. The best posters were awarded with; Ist Prize Ms. Harman from Department of Life Long Learning & Extension; 2nd & 3rd Prize to Ms. Mahima and Ms. Jasmeen, students from University Institute of Fashion Technology.

University School of Open Learning (USOL) gave a befitting tribute to Dr. Radhakrishnan and also celebrate the spirit of Teacher’s Day by organizing a Capacity Building Workshop for its faculty members and students. More than 40 Faculty members, Research Scholars and students participated in a very innovate Capacity Building Workshop on Abode for E-Content Development. The workshop aimed to train participants to add value to the study material through Abode.
Prof. Madhurima Verma, Chairperson in her welcome address, highlighted the need of making the study material more engaging and effective by integrating befitting visuals, infographics. Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Panjab University, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He expressed that teachers’ striving for self enrichment is a real tribute to the great teacher.
Prof. Sukhwinder, Director APJ Abdul Kalam Computer Centre in his key note address gave a very involving comprehensive overview of Moocs. He enriched the participant by giving them a live experience of a tutorial/video of a Mooc Course.
Dr. Neeraj K. Singh, Deputy Librarian, P.U. later in the first technical session, shared his experience with SWYAM the platform provided by Government of India which aims to revolutionize the Education System of India..
Later in the afternoon sessions, Prof. Ravi K. Mahajan, Mr. Jeesu Jaskanwar Singh, Mr. Sudhir Baweja, Dr. Bhupinder Singh shared their insights on various aspects of Abode Application Software. In the last session participants carried out practical exercises.

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh organized a programme on Teachers’ Day to commemorate the birthday of a great Teacher, Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, here today. Professor Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU while congratulating the big day in teacher’s life, urged all to keep themselves abreast with latest developments. Teacher in any role of researcher/teaching/administrative can leave their signature with determination and dedication and inculcate qualities in their students to make them into responsible citizens. It is also a day of self analysis and stop-taking of this noble profession.
He added that the present day need is of dedicated teacher who work consciously and contribute their mite for the inclusive development of the society by imparting proper education to the students. He urged all to re-dedicate to the teaching profession and reiterate the commitment to the cause of teaching and research.
Professor Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instructions enlightened the gathering with the ancient Gurukul-Guru Shishya Parampara to be rationally implemented in the modern era.
Professor R.K. Singla, Dean Research in his address while expressing his gratitude to all the teachers, said that teachers are like light houses spreading knowledge to students.
Earlier, on the occasion, Professor Bhupinder Singh Bhoop (UIPS) Coordinator, UGC Centre for Excellence in Nano Biomedical Application, while welcoming the guests, accentuated on the role of an ideal University teacher.
On the occasion, Professor Manju Malhotra, Department of History, was felicitated by Professor Raj Kumar for her achievements during her long stint in Panjab University.
Besides Professor Bhoop, the entire event was coordinated by Professor Prashant Kumar Gautam Director, University Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management, and Dr Manjushri Sharma of UIAMS.
