On the basis of communication sent to students of the Girls Hostel no. 8, 9, 10 and International Hostel , Panjab University, Chandigarh to take their belongings since these are to be converted into COVID 19 Isolation Unit by Chandigarh Administration, today around 350 students have taken their belongings from all these hostels, informed Prof Neena Capalash, DSW(W). They have been given time till 26 April,2020. However, they still can collect their belongings from the University till the hostels are handed over to Chandigarh Administration.
On World Malaria Day, 25th April 2020, Panjab University, Chandigarh and PGIMER, Chandigarh released a pamphlet from the famous comic series of Kids, Vaayu & Corona. The awareness material created by the team shows that Kids and Vaayu Joined hands together for zero malaria.
Dr Suman Mor, Chairperson, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University mentioned that Malaria is life-threatening disease, which spread to humans through infected mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of malaria are fever, chills, and flu-like illness and disease could be lethal if left untreated. Therefore, it is important to create awareness and provide knowledge and information about the causes and spread of Malaria.
Dr Ravindra Khaiwal, Additional Professor of Environment Health, Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh mentioned that World Malaria Day is celebrated every year on 25th April and theme of this year is “Zero Malaria Starts with us”. He further stated that, while during lockdown, we remain mostly indoor, it is important to destroy mosquito breeding sites in and around your home and remain safe.
The awareness material shows that Vaayu and Kids joined hand together to create awareness and identifying mosquito breeding sites and destroying them jointly. Vaayu motivates children’s to regularly check sites, where mosquito hides and breed like such as standing water in containers, flower pots & saucer, standing water around trash or dustbin, garden ponds. Kids need to identifying mosquitoes breeding sites and destroyed to control malaria, which is a carrier for malaria parasite.
The leaflet highlighted the importance of mosquito net, protective clothing, mosquito repellents, keeping netted doors and windows closed, besides replacing standing water with damp sand in flower pots, changing water for bird daily, cleaning Drains and roof gutters regular to minimise the vector borne diseases.

The Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, has identified four centers in Chandigarh – Mohali region for “upscaling the testing capacity for Covid-19” whenever in future the need arises in the wake of increased cases. These centers are IMTECH, IISER, INST and PU which will be working on the Hub and Spoke model. IMTECH will serve as the Hub for collection of samples and processing them afor inactivation or RNA isolation and then will distribute these, along with kits, to the Spokes centers i.e. IISER, INST and PU for testing.
PU is already in the process of preparing itself for testing and is completing the ground work. PU has nine RT PCR machines in different departments and a database and working conditions of all these have been prepared, informed Prof Prince Sharma,Dean,Faculty Science. PU is readying its BioSafety Level 2 lab with equipment for carrying out the testing work. He shared that PU has a pool of around 40 research scholars who are ready to volunteer to carry out RT PCR tests. Out of these, a group of 10 has been identified as trained manpower who are adept in RT PCR technique. Whenever the need arises, these research scholars will be given a short training and they will be ready for testing. They may be provided hostel facility for accommodation or curfew passes.

Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) First Year admission schedule for Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh for the session 2020-21 has been resumed in consonance with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India notification w.e.f. April 20, 2020, informed Dr Jagat Bhushan, Principal-cum-Professor . The schedule approved by the Ministry specifies this round of admissions to be completed by May 4, 2020,he added.
Accordingly, the schedule and all other details for MDS admissions in dental institute has been intimated on website of Dental Institute i.e. http://dentalsciences.puchd.ac.in and desirous candidates have been advised to get the updates from it. Last date to apply for this course is April24, 2020.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University chaired the second round of online meeting of the 38 Chairpersons, Directors and Coordinators of different departments, institutes and centres including regional centres of PU at Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur, Muktsar and Kauni besides Prof. R.K. Singla, Dean Research, here today.
PU VC had one to one interaction with the heads to know about the online academic activities going on and also enquired about the syllabus covered till now.
PU VC appreciated the concerted efforts of the teaching faternity of the varsity towards promoting the academic interests of the students. Prof. Raj Kumar urged all to ensure connecting of the faculty with the students through possible online options for confidence building during testing times. Further, he assured that after lockdown special doubt clearing sessions and pratical classes will be held besides requisite theory classes in the best interest of the PU students.
Prof. Kumar also shared that already six project proposals on COVID-19 are submitted to different ministeries of the Government and other six are in pipeline. He further asked the Chairpersons to motivate the other members of the teaching faternity to comeup with research project proposals for the cause of humanity at large.
Later, Dr. Vishal Sharma gave a lucid presentation on how to make use of Zoom and WebEx platforms for online teaching in the online meeting itself.
Panjab university organized a one day workshop on the theme, “How to prepare for online teaching: Tools and Techniques” , here today using Zoom platform.
More than 70 teachers affiliated to various colleges and universities participated in the workshop from their home. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. He highlighted the need for online teaching in the present time and asked the participants to enhance their teaching skills by learning innovative tools of online teaching.
Prof. Deepak Kapur, Chairperson, University Business School, thanked all the participants and advised them to adopt digital pedagogy to be an effective teacher.
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Tejinderpal Singh, Associate Professor, University Business School, Panjab University, Chandigarh . In highly informative and engaging lectures, he demonstrated various tools of online learning covering four components i.e. Learning Management System, Video Recording, Interactivity and engagement. The important tools covered by Dr. Singh were Google Classroom , Loom Video Recorder, Insert Learning, Kahoot, EdPuzzel and Zoom .
In the end he motivated the participants to use these tools which are very easy to learn. Dr Singh patiently answered all the queries raised by the participants and participants appreciated the efforts of University Business School to organize such an informative workshop.

First of its kind Online National Theatre Workshop from April 11-15, 2020 organized by Department of Indian Theatre , Panjab University, on Basics of Light Design was inaugurated by the Vice -Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar,here today.
PU VC appreciated the initiative and said that this workshop will be very fruitful for the mental health of all the students and scholars from all over India.
The objective of this workshop is to provide knowledge, activity and motivation to the students of Drama /Theatre from the Universities of India.
This workshop will also cover some syllabus of the current semester.Dr. Navdeep Kaur organizer and Chairperson of the department said that this workshop will connect the students of various universities and feed both their intellect and soul in this tough time.
Souti Chakraborty, the resource person congratulated the Vice Chancellor and the Organizer and shared that this thoughtful initiative will be beneficial for the participants.
Almost 100 students and research scholars from different regions such as Punjab, South India, M.P., U. P., Delhi, Maharashtra, Assam and West Bengal,Bihar have enrolled for this workshop. It is the first online workshop being organized in India by a Theatre Department during this Lockdown period.

In a first of its kind ,Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University Chandigarh is going to organize online, five days National Workshop on Basics of Light Design from April,11-15, 2020.
Dr.Navdeep Kaur, Chairperson of Department of Indian Theatre, the organizer of the workshop informed that this initiative will motivate the students and scholars of theatre and other performing arts from various Universities and will go a long way in bringing productive and positive results during this lockdown period due to COViD 19 pandemic.
She added that the workshop will also cover the syllabus part of the current semester.
Under the able guidance of PU Vice -Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar ,this workshop will connect with other Drama/Theatre Departments of various Universities,she informed. The department is expecting around 100 participants.
Medical devices-Design Innovation Centre(DIC) group at University Institute of Engg &Technology, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been providing 3D printed face shield head supports to cater urgent PPE requirements for doctors across the region. It is expected in the forthcoming weeks, that this region will be falling short by nearly 10,000 such pieces with further spread of Covid-19.
This group led by Dr. Rakesh Tuli, Dr. Prashant Jindal and Dr. Mamta Juneja had already developed an indigenous FDM 3D printing machine which is now being extensively used to produce these pieces. This centre has a well established facility of 3 such printers to produce more pieces. Undergraduate students(Vijay and Sahil) have been working in multiple shifts to alleviate this shortage and so far a commitment of 50 such pieces has been made.
Further assistance in collaboration with TBRL, Chandigarh during this crisis period is being explored for producing other PPE and intricate ventilator connectors.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the Panjab University, Chandigarh has rescheduled the date of entrance test for PU-CET (U.G.)-2020 as 16th May 2020 instead of 26th April 2020 for admission to B.Pharmacy and B.Sc. (Hons. School), informed Prof Parvinder Singh,Controller of Examinations.
He added that the last date for submission of information on the website to generate the Bank challan has also been extended from 10th April 2020 to 4th May 2020. The candidates can also pay their fee through Net Banking / Debit Card/ Credit Card. After successful online payment, candidate will be able to complete his/her form immediately.
