A webinar on “Design for Life” A Creative Kaleidoscopic Process, organised by Dr. Prabhdip Brar, Chairperson, University Institute of Fashion Technology and Vocational Development (UIFT&VD), Panjab University on Friday, Sep 18, 2020, was presented by Siddhartha Bansal, a fashion Designer. It was attended by nearly 70 students, research scholars and faculty members of Fashion Technology.
The inspiration for the designers’ collections has been ” Golden bird” i.e. India, with an aim to present the rich Craft and Culture to the world. His collections provide a traditional experience through clothes with feminine cuts, fusing them with fresh colour combinations and intricate detailed motifs. Kaleidoscopic prints mainly inspired from Indian mythological characters is the label’s USP. His Autumn/Winter 2015, Lakme Fashion Week collection was based on a ‘Kamdhenu Cow’ which is a mythical wish granting cows. Intricate motifs from Persian era on doors and pillars were taken as an inspiration for prints in his Spring Summer LFW’16 collection ‘THE DOOR’. Mughal motifs, desert cacti, peacock, blooming lotuses were seen and celebrated.
The designer keeps playing with innovative intangible themes for his collections. ‘GAMECHANGER’ A/W’16, the collection addressed the dilemma one is being unable to choose between money or his soul. Snakes and eye motifs were incorporated in prints. Similarly, his A/W LFW’17 collection, portrayed a story of a traveller wandering from west to east and is awestruck by India’s beauty. Metamorphosis was the successful theme for his S/S’18 collection. Kaleidoscopic butterfly prints, Pastel colours and 80’s fashion trends were high points of the garments.

The joint research by Prof. Tapas Mukhopadhyay, Professor& Director (Retd.),National Centre for Human Genome Studies & Research, Panjab University
and his team including Dr. Nilambra Dogra CSIR-Senior Research Associate, Centre for Systems Biology & Bioinformatics, Panjab University and Dr. Ashok Kumar Chairperson, Centre for Systems Biology & Bioinformatics, Panjab University for finding an effective and safe anti-cancer option from the repertoire of available tested drugs was published in the journal Scientific Reports and featured at #11 amongst the top 100 oncology papers. The paper has attracted widespread attention and is in the top 5% of ~15,873,280 research outputs tracked across all sources so far by Altmetric (a measure of attention a scientific paper has received).
The process of developing new cancer treatments from scratch and bringing them to the market is a time consuming and expensive process. An alternative time saving, inexpensive and safe approach is to explore already available approved drugs for ailments other than cancer which may display significant anticancer properties. This approach with the potential to provide economically beneficial, safer and effective options in a short period of time has been termed as ‘drug repurposing’ and through this strategy the team has identified Fenbendazole (FZ) – a veterinary deworming drug – as a safe, inexpensive and effective anti-cancer agent. Thanks to decades of motivated research, more people than ever before are surviving cancer. However, the task is still far from accomplished. The disease continues to claim many lives, and by and large ‘cancer’ still remains a dreaded word.Gaps remain to be traversed and challenges to be overcome before we can lay a final claim on victory over cancer. A vast majority of cancer therapies suffer from the two most common issues encountered in cancer treatment – toxicity and drug resistance. Finding a way to overcome these hurdles remains a challenge for cancer researchers.
Laboratory grown cancer cells originating from various tissues (lung, prostate, colon, breast etc.) could be killed by exposing them to different doses of fenbendazole. Importantly, their results showed that FZ was non-toxic to normal cells at doses at which it killed cancer cells. To evaluate the efficacy of the drug better, the results were confirmed in a mouse model bearing tumor of human origin. Mice fed with FZ showed a considerable decrease in tumor size. Through their experiments, the researchers demonstrated that FZ acted by targeting multiple cellular pathways including microtubules, enhancing p53 levels, hampering glucose uptake and glycolysis as well as inhibiting the proteasomal pathway of protein degradation.
Cancer progression involves a number of factors affecting multiple components of the cell. Thus, drugs against single targets often show limited efficacy, and furthermore, they may eventually lead to drug resistance, since cancer cells are clever and resourceful enough to rely on other pathways for growth and survival when one pathway is blocked. Drugs targeting several cellular components simultaneously are expected to be more effective besides being able to evade the likelihood of developing resistance. This work proposes FZ as a multitargeting effective inexpensive repurposed drug for cancer treatment.
Since the publication of this research, the authors have been contacted by people who shared how they had benefitted from this work on FZ. Even though this drug has not been through clinical trials for cancer and cannot yet be prescribed for cancer treatment, some terminally ill patients have self-administered FZ in the absence of other alternatives and shared their success stories with the authors. An American patient with lung cancer metastasized throughout his body who had dismal chances of survival started taking FZ on advice of his veterinarian friend. His oncologist was amazed to find that his subsequent scans came all clear. He’s still alive, healthy and cancer-free more than three years after he was told he’d soon die. He has written a blog about his experience with FZ to spread the word (https://www.mycancerstory.rocks) and has also shared many other success stories of patients suffering from triple negative breast cancer, prostate, colorectal, pancreatic and other types of cancer.
Through their work, the researchers hope that even though FZ is an off-patent drug, it will be taken to clinical trials so that it can be approved for use in cancer and doesn’t remain yet another promising drug which could have saved lives but never reached patients.

New Education Policy-2020 was recently approved by the Govt. of India for the transformation of our education system. As India Embarks on a new journey of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” Entrepreneurs and Corporate Relations Cell of University Institute of Applied Management Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh under the advice and guidance of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, took this peculiar initiative of organizing the webinar “Agenda @ Atmanirbhar Bharat”. The webinar was organized to enable students understand the whole narrative of it by roping in eminent and distinguished personalities who are at zenith of their careers including Mr. Rahul Narvekar, serial entrepreneur, Mr. KS Bhatia, CEO and Founder Pumpkart and Figgital and Mr. Ravi Kumar, SP (HQ) Jalandhar.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University in his inaugural address highlighted that the global pandemic has shown us the benefits of ‘Be Indian and Buy Indian’. We have now become critically aware of our own supply chain. We know that relying on other countries for critical items will ultimately put you at their mercy. To avoid such adversity for ourselves, it is more important than ever that we become self-reliant and reduce our dependence on other countries. The pandemic has taught the importance of local manufacturing, local market and local supply chain. Emphasis of ‘vocal for local’ asserts that it is all about ‘made in India’ and is to increase to push Indian products to become large enough to become international brands. The NEP 2020 has gone in for a significant overhaul of the education system—from terminologies and institutional framework to functionality—when it comes to transforming the governance, delivery, and financing of education. NEP will be the harbinger of movement towards Atmanirbhar and Swabhiman Bharat. Further he talked about promoting multidisciplinary approach, scouting for partners from numerous fields like industry, academicians, researchers and focus on technology and promote collaboration with national and international institutions and these tie ups should be in the right direction to create synergies. This will help India become ATMANIRBHAR and students becoming job providers not job seekers only.
Mr. Ravi Kumar an IPS officer and currently serving as SP (Superintendent of Police) Cyber Cell Jalandhar provided valuable insights in the field of data security and its vulnerabilities. He began by explaining how pivotal data is in the functioning of any enterprise and startups where 68% of business leaders feel their cyber security risks are increasing and only 5 % of company’s folders are properly protected. With help of various live examples, he talked about various vulnerabilities like unsecured websites, improper cookie policy, SQL injection attacks, Brute force attacks and others and also suggested remedies like stronger IT Act, IPR protection for startup, Data Protection Law, increasing manpower training and more security experts. In the time of Covid 19, these cyber attacks have been increased 3 times. So, we all must be very aware of Data Security.
Mr. K. S. Bhatia founder and C.E.O of B2C platform Pumpkart.com is also launching another startup Figgital (non essential hyper local platform) at the end of this month appreciated Prime Minister for launching initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat, Startup India, Digital India, Skill India, Made in India and told how Startups are the key to success of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Mr. Rahul Narvedkar, Social Entrepreneur, Speaker, Investor and Mentor, and founder and CEO of various ventures including Startup Studio India, Sun and Sands Advisors, Japan, The India Network, NDTV Indian Roots and FashionandYou.com told us about his own story. How at one time, he did not have money to pay salaries and later sold Indian Roots ecommerce platform for such a high valuation. He achieved it by not following the rules of book and he went on to say that if you have the right approach and idea money is not a constraint. After that he started India Networks to provide mentorship for kids in small town so that language and geography do not remain a constraint intertwined with the aim of 1 Million startups from rural India in next 3 tears. He also had Indian Angel Fund which has so far done 3 investments all in women led startups. He in his speech laid emphasis on creating an ecosystem which can lead to innovation. He motivated the students by saying that we need to understand and celebrate our failures like an event and not label people as failures. We have to invest in people and create role models. By doing this, we can create an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Prof. Upasna Joshi Sethi extended a formal welcome to the guests and said that a self-reliant India will develop with focus on five pillars viz economy, which brings in quantum jump and not incremental change; infrastructure, which should become the identity of India; technology-driven system; vibrant demography; and nascent demand, especially in the rural hinterland.
All the queries of the students were successfully taken up by the eminent guests and concomitantly they were answered too which made this event an eye opener for the students. Dr. Monika Aggarwal.
