The Panjab University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar visited Museums of various departments today which included The Gandhi Bhavan, Ancient History, Fine Arts , Anthropology, Zoology, and Geology.
During his visit, he met the Chairpersons and the staff and interacted with them for enhancing the maintenance of the same. He urged all to explore possibilities of increasing the footfall of visitors. He also took stock of the issues faced by them and assured them of all help by the University authorities for the smooth running of the system.
The officials accompanying VC included Mr Vikram Singh, CUS, Prof Promila Pathak, Prof Sukhbir Kaur, Prof Simrat Kahlon and Dr Manish Sharma, officials from XEN office and Horticulture Division.
Chandigarh, November 10: – A meeting of Environment & City Beautification committee, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today in the conference hall under the chairmanship of Sh. Sachin Kumar Lohatiya and attended by other member councillors of MCC namely Sh. Rajesh Gupta, Smt. Heera Negi, and concerned officers of MCC.
During the meeting, the committee accorded approval to following agenda items:-
· Rough cost estimated for the work of Landscaping Works in Green Belt Village Maloya, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 14.03 lac.
· Rough cost estimated for providing and fixing of open air Gym equipments in 2 No. Parks, Sector 48, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 6.57 lac.
· Rough cost estimated for construction of cement concrete walking track in park near H. No. 622 & repair work in park near H. No. 647 Milk Colony, Dhanas at an estimated cost of Rs. 4.45 lac
The Department of Defence and National Security Studies and Centre for Police Administration in collaboration with Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) is organising a “Five Days Capacity Building Training Programme of Security Personnel of Panjab University from 9th – 13th November, 2021 at Seminar Hall, Centre for Police Administration.
Dr Jaskaran Singh Waraich Chairperson, Department of Defence and National Security Studies and Dr Kuldeep Singh, Centre for Police Administration are the coordinators of the training program. In the Inaugural session of the programme Dr Jaskaran Singh Waraich gave the introduction of the five-day course and delivered the welcome address. He also highlighted the importance of training program to the security personnel to keep University campus safe.
Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University in his inaugural address, motivated participants and also encouraged them to do their duty sincerely. He also highlighted that Security is at the top of his priority list and during his tenure resource allocation to the security department has increased drastically. Prof. Kumar said that he is aware of all the hardships faced by the security guards while performing their duties and he assured that in near future their problems will be resolved. He added that new equipments will be provided to the security department and recruitment will also be done at the earliest. PU VC highlighted that such training programs should be conducted on regular basis and resource persons from different fields should be engaged and activities like yoga, meditation and skills development should be made part of such programmes. He also added that security department played a very important role during covid-19 pandemic time with limited resources which is commendable.
Other dignitaries who were present at the inaugural session were Dr.Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, UGC-HRDC,Prof. Anil Monga, Chairperson Centre for Police Administration, Prof Rakesh Datta, Department of Defence and National Security Studies, Sh. Vikram Singh, Chief of University Security, Panjab University.
Sh. Vikram Singh said that training programme is very helpful to the security guards. He also advised the security guards to perform their duties sincerely and honestly.
Prof Jayanti Dutta in her concluding remarks shared her views that University employees are like a family because they serve in the university for twenty to thirty years and they are the real stake holders of the university. She also highlighted that the training programme will give positive mindset to the participants and advised the participants to learn as much as possible from this training programme and she also added that growth of university and its stake holders is interdependent.
Capt. Kashmir Singh was also present at the event who will be the Chief Instructor of this five-day training program.The focus of the training programme will be on overall professional development of the participants from the University Security.
The inaugural session ended with formal Vote of Thanks by Dr Kuldeep Singh.

Chandigarh, November 8:-Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chanigarh inaugurated auditorium in Rani Lakshmi Bai Mahila Bhawan, sector 38 here today in the presence of Smt. Kirron Kher (virtually), Sh. Dharampal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh.
While addressing the gathering in the auditorium, the Governor said that Women empowerment cannot be successful if women from each section of the society are empowered. After the onset of the 21st century, women belonging to the grassroots level have found many vocational works that were only reserved for men. Today there are many female masons, bus drivers, petrol pump attendants, farmers etc. And all these women are doing their job extremely well. Undoubtedly women are making their presence felt on the earth as well as on the space. Sky is the limit for them now.
The Governor said that I am so happy to see the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh itself headed by a woman is doing its bit towards this cause of women empowerment and getting the much needed Auditorium in Rani Lakshmi Bai Mahila Bhawan inaugurated. He also congratulated the team MCC for creating this highly innovative, thoughtful and modern auditorium which is going to be the hub of socio-cultural activities in future.
Smt. Kirron Kher addressed the gathering virtually. She said that women shouldered critical responsibilities even in India’s struggle for freedom. The history of Indian Freedom Struggle would be incomplete without mentioning the contributions of women. The sacrifice made by the women of India will occupy the foremost place. They fought with true spirit and undaunted courage and faced various tortures, exploitations and hardships to earn us freedom.
She also said that the role played by women in the War of Independence (the Great Revolt) of 1857 was creditable and invited the admiration even leaders of the Revolt. Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, whose heroism and superb leadership laid an outstanding example of real patriotism.
Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor said that the structure of the auditorium building spread over in 1.3 acres was constructed in the year of 2015 and now to make it functional, the furnishing work has been carried out with state of art facilities. The main objective of this Auditorium is to promote cultural and traditional activities particularly in Southern Sectors of the city. To make it more useful and viable the 2nd floor of this building has been given to various Academies of Chandigarh for performing Art and Incubation Centre namely Chandigarh Lalit Kala Academy, Chandigarh Sahitya Academy and Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Academy. In addition to these live stage performances, live display with Projector and Screen, State of Art Hi – Fi Sound and Lighting System will also be there.
Earlier, Sh. Arun Sood, former Mayor and area councilor welcomed all the guests including Chief Guest and said that this auditorium will be a boon for the budding artists of this area specially the women artists. He said that gone are the days when women had to be dependent on their fathers or husbands to get things that they wanted. From the 20th century onwards women got more opportunities to join the workforce. He said that the main objective of this Auditorium is to promote cultural and traditional activities particularly in Southern Sectors of the city.
In addition to that cultural programmes were organized including GaneshVandna, Vande Maatram, Giddha, solo classical performances of women artists.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date of submission of online Fresh admission of all Masters, Bachelor & Diplomas programmes up to 12th November, 2021 for the July-2021 session. This extension of last date shall not apply to Certificate and Semester-based programmes, i.e., MP, MPB, PGDMM, PGDFM, PGDHRM, PGDOM, PGDFMP, DBPOFA, PGDIS, MCA, BCA, and all Certificate and Awareness programmes of 6 months duration or less. Details of the IGNOU academic programmes for the July, 2021 session can be accessed from the link https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/. The prospective learners can apply for Masters/Bachelor/Diploma programmes of the University on the official website, informed the Senior Regional Director of IGNOU Regional Centre Chandigarh Dr. A.K. Dimri. Last date of submission of ‘online’ admission form for the July session was earlier fixed for 31st October, 2021.

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU lauded the commendable achievement of the PU Sportspersons, Coaches and officials of Directorate of Sports for bringing laurels in sports.

3 Day International Conference by Indian National Cartographic Association (INCA) commences today on the theme Cartography for Self Relient India which is being hosted by Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
The Chief Guest, Hon’ble Governor of Haryana, Shri Bandaru Dattatraya in his address said that the geo-spatial field has tremendous potential for generating employment in the country. He also mentioned that in the management of COVID-19 pandemic crisis, COVID maps proved beneficial. He further added that application of Geographic Information Sciences(GIS) has become a crucial part of how NASA gets to know the feature of other worlds, develops broader understanding of Geophysics and gathers valuable information about our own planet. He added that India will have a coherent national location data framework by 2030 which will assist the country to move towards E-Economics, E-Service and E-Commerce and will help improve services to the citizens. He highlighted the SVAMITVA , flagship scheme of Centre is reformative step towards establishing clear ownership of property in rural inhabited areas by mapping of land parcels using drone technology.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU, while referring the conference to be prestigious platform, emphasised on the need to come up with an action plan to make cartography multi-disciplinary so that its knowledge can be shared with other domains.
The Surveyor General of India, Mr. Naveen Tomar, in his keynote address, focussed on the requirement of data collection on a large scale to make India a self-reliant nation. Also, he stressed upon the need of fresh blood to be injected into the system and also talked about public-private partnership in this regard.
The Guest of Honour, Vice Admiral Adhir Arora, Chief Hydrographer, Govt. of India stressed on the sphere of marine cartography and spoke on the complexities of ocean mapping particularly in terms of huge funding and man power being needed for this task.
Prof. Krishna Mohan, President of INCA, introduced the theme of the Conference, which he said aligned with the vison of The Government of India of “Reform, Perform and Transform”. It was followed by an inaugural address by Director of National Institute of Advanced Study, Bengaluru and Former Secretary, MoES, India, Dr. Shailesh Nayak. He emphasised on Maps to be a mainstay in the transformation of process of India under the vision of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.
The felicitations of the dignitaries along with the winners were performed apart from release of books and maps. Prof. Gaurav Kalotra, Chairperson Department of Geography proposed vote of thanks.

A 3-days online workshop began in the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh on “Competency Development in Critical Thinking” for research scholars who are registered for their Ph.D. programme.
Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Haryana interacted with the participants and highlighted that critical thinking leads to problem solving which is a trait needed in every sphere of life. Observation, clear thinking, analysis and implementation are the different steps of critical thinking. It is a way of life which transforms you as a person & as a researcher.
Prof. A.K. Nandakumaran from Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore delved upon the components of critical thinking and also shared his own experience of teaching critical thinking to students at a prime institute of India.
Scholars from Chandigarh, Varanasi and Lucknow are participating in the program. Resource persons from Indian Institute of Sciences, Central University of Haryana and IGNOU are interacting with the scholars to inculcate in them the mind-set to think in a critical manner as well as practice the different strategies of critical thinking.

As many as 32 faculty scientists from various disciplines from Panjab University are included in the elite list of world top 2% scientists as per the Stanford University, Stanford, California, USA which is based upon a Single-year impact (year 2020). All the 17 scientists from the first list have made it to the second list also.
Data include all scientists who are among the top 100,000 across all fields according to the composite citation index. Composite citation index was calculated with a validated formula and machine learning approach was used to extract the data from Scopus programmed with a specific set of rules like citations, h-index, authorship status etc.On the basis of citations and papers, the scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields. Selection of the scientists in the list is based on the c-score criteria or a percentile rank of 2% or above, based upon the various publication metrics, including, Scopus H-index, co-authorship adjusted HM-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator.
