Governor launches door to door waste collection through MCC vehicles

Chandigarh, December 22:- Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh today launched the door to door waste collections through MCC vehicles from Punjab Raj Bhawan, Sector 6, Chandigarh in the presence of Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh and Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, Chandigarh.

During the launch, the Governor said that in order to implementation successful door to door collection of waste separately i.e. wet and dry waste, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has deployed their own vehicles throughout the city, which will reduce the problem of mixed garbage collected at garbage plant. He said that the door to door collection will now be done through the use of partitioned vehicles including three separate collection bins for wet, dry and domestic hazardous waste in each vehicle. He said that now Chandigarh can achieve top position in the Swachh Survekshan-2021 with ensuring 100% waste segregation in the city.

The Governor congratulated the Mayor for implementing the system in city with a detailed route plan to cover all the wards and villages alongwith colonies of city. He asked the concerned officers to prepare a detailed vehicle and staff deployment plan based on the route plan in order to meet the waste collection demand of each ward.

He appealed all the citizens of Chandigarh to give segregated waste in these MCC vehicles for easy and early processing of the garbage at the plant. He asked all the councilors to create awareness among the city residents at their ward levels so that the system be implemented successfully.

While sharing information about the door to door waste collection system through MCC vehicles, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that these vehicles will carry the waste from households to the transfer stations, from where the waste is transported to the garbage plant in loaders. All vehicles used in the collection and transportation system are monitored by a GPS enabled tracking system. The GPS system is constantly monitored by the monitoring cell. Any route deviations by particular drivers are penalized and multiple deviations is also grounds for termination, added the Commissioner.

He said that the segregated waste i.e. wet, dry and hazardous waste from the domestic generators will be collected through newly deployed 97 vehicles on daily basis, which will run on the streets of sectors 1 to 30, Chandigarh from today. He said that earlier, the MCC had deployed 99 door to door waste collection vehicles, which are also running in the city to collect segregated waste from villages and some commercial areas of city. In addition to that 293 more vehicles will be deployed in phased manner on delivery bases throughout the city to collect segregated waste from households.

He said that Chandigarh has been divided into 4 zones and 26 wards. Each ward has on an average 9600 households and commercial establishments of the areas. In Chandigarh, waste is generated from various sources including households, commercial areas and other institutions like RWAs, hospitals, hotels among others. The households or residential complexes are covered by the door to door collection system while the semi bulk and bulk generators are covered by the bulk collection system. With this facility, Chandigarh ensures the 100% coverage of wards through its door to door segregated collection system with deploying all the 390 additional vehicles, added the Commissioner.

Online Yoga for Self Management by PU

Chandigarh December 21, 2020

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Swami Vivekananda Studies(ICSVS), Panjab university is
organising a 14 day online workshop on Yoga for Self Management from 12 -26
December,2020.

On day four and fifth of the workshop, a special session was conducted by Mr.Prashant
Verma , Research fellow at ICSVS. He highlighted the role of yoga in curing
constipation. He gave live demonstrations of various asanas such as Surya namaskar,
Katichakra asana, Bhujangasana, Chakkiasana ,Trikonasana, Pawanmukta and Setu Bandha
asana .


On day sixth and seventh, a special session was organised on Diabetes management.
Mr.Parviinder Singh , from Punjabi University Patiala gave a live demonstration of
various yoga asanas which are very beneficial in controlling diabetes , a lifestyle
disease. He stressed that a balanced diet plays a major role in saving us from the
onset of this disease. He also warned that the asanas should be performed correctly and
under the supervision of a yoga expert. Live demonstration of various asanas was
performed by Ms Komal and Ms Sapna of Punjabi University Patiala.

On day eighth  and ninth,Dr.Arpita Negi, Department of Yoga Studies, Himachal Pradesh
University spoke on the importance of managing thyroid problems. Women are more prone
to thyroid imbalance which is responsible for many ailments.We need to be careful about
our food habits and daily routine. Ms Nisha Singh research scholar from Himachal
Pradesh University gave a live demonstration of various asanas.


 Large number of participants attended the session and interacted with the speaker.

Chascon 2020 Concludes at PU

The Chandigarh Science Congress,Chascon 2020 organised by Panjab University in association with CRIKC from December 17 -19, 2020 through online mode,  concluded on Saturday. 

Prof Raj Kumar,Vice Chancellor Panjab University encouraged participants to gear up for innovations and involve various disciplines for trans-disciplinary research.

The session on nano sciences and engineering included talk by prof navakanta bhat from Iisc Bangalore who informed the audience about applications of nano science and the user friendly multi-diagnostic sensor developed by his group which could be used in rural settings.

Prof UC Banerjee from Niper presented his work in downstream processing of important biomolecules. Prof Arun K Singh and prof Sarabjit Singh from PEC Chandigarh presented their work on advances in rectifier  technology and machining.

Prof. VR Sinha Dean Research PU gave insights into new drug delivery platforms and Prof. S K Mehta gave an overview of CRIKC activities.

There was a panel discussion on the role of new education policy coordinated by prof Latika Sharma from PU and Prof Sarit Fas Director IIT Ropar stressed on out of box thinking

The valedictory address was given by Dr Bakulesh Khamar, Director Cadila Pharmaceuticals and he gave examples of successful translation of scientific innovations at Cadila.

Day 2 of CHASCON 2020 witnessed Simultaneous Plenary Sessions

The ongoing Science Congress at Panjab University organised various sessions in different  Science departments  . The scientific programme of chascon was a golden opportunity for participants where they competed and were awarded for their skills and hard work.

 For Chemical Sciences, there was one keynote address by Dr. Narinder Singh from IIT Ropar, Roopnagar, Punjab, two invited lectures delivered by Dr. Vipan Kumar from GNDU, Amritsar and Dr. Ashok Kumar Malik from Punjabi University, Patiala, apart from several oral presentations and poster presentation sessions.

 Moreover, for engg and management sciences two invited lectures, first by Dr. Talsimarif Saiyed, CEO and Director of C-CAMp Bangaluru and by Dr. Praveen Vamula from instem Bangalore presented the lecture on the topic “Start up and innovation in India: Opportunities and Challenges” and discussed the role of C-CAMP in empowering entrepreneurs in science innovation through research, development, training and incubation.

The talk of Dr. Amit Kulshrestha, Associate, IISER Professor Mohali on ‘Image of power maps in linear groups’ was attended by about 50 participants. The talk was very well received. There were a lot of interactions between speakers and the participants in the Mathematical Sciences Section. The Physical Sciences session commenced with the talk of Dr. Davinder Siwal, BFUHS, Faridkot on Nuclear Radiation Detectors for Imaging Science followed by Dr. Basant K Nayak, BARC, Mumbai and Dr Arun S. Oinam, PGIMER,Chandigarh on topics Why Nuclear Physics is Interesting – A Portrait of Basic Science to Applications and Basic Image Acquisition & Reconstruction Concepts of Imaging Machines used in Radiotherapy respectively. Prof. R.K. Kohli, FNA FNA. FASc., FNASc., FNAAS, FNESA, FBS, Vice-Chancellor, Amity University, Mohali delivered an expert talk entitled “Alien Invasive Plants: Status, Impact and Challenges”. He inspired the students of life sciences to be scientific in approach while dealing with any environmental issue. This also included Prof. (Dr.) Shalini Gainder, Additional Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, PGIMER, Chandigarh who presented on the topic“Stepping Up Women’s Health: Being Young.

In the morning session of pharmaceutical sciences, two expert lectures were organized by Prof. Vivek Ranjan Sinha who was the chief guest on this occasion. The first webinar was delivered by a globally recognized scientist, Prof. Sanjay Garg, Professor of Pharmaceutical Science, UniSA Clinical & Health Sciences, University of South Australia. He delivered an expert talk on ‘Development of a novel contraceptive, from concept to US FDA approval and market’. This was followed by another interesting and informative talk by Dr. Girish Tillu, Vaidya-Scientist Fellow of Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Maharashtra, on the topic ‘Integrative medicine for newer health challenges: a make in India perspective’.

Dr. Jih Pai Lin from National University of Taiwan who joined the Earth and Environment Sciences section from Taipei, gave the expert talk on sand dollars (Echinoidea) from Taiwan with special reference to Indian Echinoids. The Sectional Programme for Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital as part of the ongoing 14th Chandigarh Science Congress, 2020 was conducted today. Dr. Sudhir Bhandari, Additional Professor and Incharge, Prosthodontics, Oral Health Sciences Centre, PGIMER, was the guest speaker. He discussed the role of Oral Health providers in head and neck cancer patients scheduled for radiotherapy. Additionally, for Basic Medical Sciences, an expert talk as Dr. Deepak Saini, Associate Professor, IISc Bangalore. Dr. Saini presented the title “Aging- the misery, mastery and the mystery” and enlightened all the participants about the various factors influencing aging and how aging and inflammation are correlated.

These lectures were followed by competitions. Various students participated in oral and e poster ppt and bagged prizes.

The candidates who have cleared any of the following national tests can apply for M.Phil/Ph.D Admission for the session 2020-21:

·         UGC-CSIR NET including JRF, SLET, GATE or any other prestigious test for national level scholarship/fellowship conducted at all India level on behalf of national institutions for example GPAT and JEST.

·         Direct awardees of fellowship for pursuing Ph.D.

·         Working permanent teachers of Panjab University and affiliated colleges

·         Ph.D Entrance Test of Panjab University for admission to Ph.D/M.Phil shall be walid for 3 years.

The GATE qualifying score be considered as the basic. GATE/GPAT of any other national level test meant for admission to Ph.D/M.Phil shall be valied forever.

CHASCON2020 commences today in Online Mode at PU

The 14th Chandigarh Science Congress (online mode) CHASCON 2020 commenced today which
is being organized by Panjab University in association with Chandigarh region
Innovation and Knowledge Cluster(CRIKC).

 This event was initiated with a brief introduction and a warm welcome by the
Coordinator Prof Deshdeepak Singh.  Also, the Dean Sciences, Prof Prince Sharma
enlightened the students with his views about the event and its history.


Professor Anil Bhardwaj, Director, Physical Research Lab, Ahmedabad graced the
inaugural session and spoke   on the topic Indian Planetary Missions. He included
various aspects of space missions, Mission Mangal, moon solar Wind interactions, brief
introduction about Chandrayaan 2 and a lot more. Prof Anil gave his views on the
success of Mangal Yaan and he motivated the students to join Planetary Science and
pursue Space research. The students were motivated and inspired which was evident with
their curiosity, inquisitiveness and interest with which they added comments online. He
added that India had sent satellite to Mars for six months initially but India has now
got six years to get information from Mars which will be very useful for research
purposes.

The next speaker, Prof Amulya K Panda, Director, NII, New Delhi gave a very informative
talk about the recent Vaccines. His talk was focused on the topic Challenges in the
development of vaccines. He illustrated with his presentation that normally it takes a
decade for the vaccine to come to the market but what could be the major hurdles for
the coming of the vaccine in reference to the Corona Pandemic.


Nextly, a very eminent scientist, Prof MRN Murthy, AstraZeneca Chair, Institute of
Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB), Bangalore, gave an amazing talk on the
title the structural Biology of Coronaviruses. He emphasized on how SARS Cov2 is
evolving at a drastic fast rate and why the transmission rate is relatively faster than
other viruses.


The session for the Pandemic Covid 19, also included another prominent scientist, Prof
R Vardarajan, Molecular Biophysics Unit, IISc, Bangalore. He presented a very
informative talk on Immunogen Design for COVID Vaccine. He gave very useful insights of
what are the types of corona Vaccines being introduced till now and how we can fight
against the novel virus. He told about a very important aspect that these vaccines
don’t elicit a memory response, which can be a great hurdle in providing immunity.
Post Lunch, speaker, Prof Ravi Gupta, Medical Superintendent, GMCH 32, Chandigarh, gave
a talk on the ‘Clinical Management of Covid and the way forward for innovation’. His
talk was divided into three parts: their experience at GMCH and the Challenges faced
during the corona pandemic, the standard Treatment of COViD as of Today and Innovations
during Covid era.


The event was graced with another speaker, Prof Paula Videira, Glycoimmunology Group at
UCIBIO, Lisbon, Portugal. She delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Glycoimmunology: sugars
on the fuss for improved immunotherapies?’ She gave her insights into the different
glycans and how they play a role in providing immunity, acting as a receptor and many
more. Herein she explained how ACE2 Receptor in Sars Cov2 plays a vital role for high
transmission.


 Today ,around 400 students  joined the conference on CISCO WEBEX platform. 
The Students were delighted to listen to all the speakers and this was a great success.

Online workshop on Yoga at PU

On the second and third day of the 14 day online workshop on Yoga for Self
Management organized by Centre for Swami Vivekananda Studies, Panjab University
Chandigarh. Dr.Laxminarayan Joshi, Head and Dean Students Welfare, Uttarakhand Sanskrit
University, Haridwar gave a live presentation on the yoga for healthy spine.

        Prof.Renu Thakur welcomed the guests. Mr Mohit introduced the speaker to the
participants. The session started with the chanting of Om and Gayatri Mantra for over
all good health and positivity of one and all. Dr.Laxminarayan is a renowned yoga
therapist. He stressed that health of our spine is a key to the health of our whole
body , Thus one needs to take care of spine by doing regular yogic activity. The spinal
cord connects brain to the rest of the body hence it is most important. He demonstrated
that how different asanas can help us to have healthy spine. While doing asanas we need
to be careful and front bending should totally be avoided by the people who have
cervical or lumber spondylitis. The problems due to wrong postures can be corrected by
performing yogic asanas. He highlighted the benefits of Suryanamaskar for keeping our
spine healthy. He referred to important asanas such as Vakra, Bhadra, Katichakra,
Bhujang,Shalbha, Setu etc for keeping our spine healthy. Live demonstrations of these
asanas helped participants to practice the same and correct their postures.

        The participants interacted with the expert .Series of questions related to
healthy spine were answered by the eminent speaker. The live demonstration was given by
Ms Akansha from the same University.


        The formal vote of thanks was proposed by Prashant Verma.The sessions were

Catalogue of Major Art Objects unveiled by AHVA, PU

Chandigarh December 14, 2020

The Department of Art History and Visual Arts Panjab University, Chandigarh unveiled
the *Catalogue of Major Art Objects* in the Museum of Fine Arts today by Professor
Tirthankar Bhattacharya Chairperson  of Art History and Visual Arts department and
Director Museum of Fine Arts.

The event was coordinated by Professor Rajeev Patnaik, the convener of the Panjab
University Museum Aggredation Committee and Chairperson, Geology Department.

Professor Tirthankar Bhattacharya has compiled and  edited the catalogue of the major
art objects. The publication would  be of immense help to the  researchers . The
catalogue would be available online and also at the departmental library archives and
the Museum of Fine Arts .

Professor Tirthankar stressed the need to publish such catalogues as a part of the
outreach program for the visibility of the University.  He urged the other chairpersons
to take up the challenge and also publish such catalogues of the museums of the
University.
