Nostalgia spread over Biophysics Alumni Meet

The Department of Biophysics, Panjab University organized a Virtual Alumni Meet, on the occasion of the Global Alumni Meet-2021 of Panjab University, Chandigarh. Over 90 alumni, joined the event from different parts of the world. The main highlight of the event was the warm and emotional address by founder chairperson of the Department of Biophysics, Professor S. R. Bawa. He shared his journey, memories and challenges throughout, which not only motivated the students of the department, but also took everyone on the journey to the memory lanes of the past. Department felicitated Professor G.S. Gupta for his contributions in the development of Department.

            Dr Ajaib Singh, was facilitated as a distinguished alumnus who has achieved a lot outside university. The feeling of nostalgia kicked in during the virtual tour of their alma mater through a video and pictures of best days of their lives. All the alumni from all walks of life shared their stories during interactive session and actively participated in the cultural program. The energy and enthusiasm of alumni was so infectious that it surpassed the boundaries of virtual world. People cried, laughed and shared their wonderful experiences at the end, with a promise to return to their alma mater.

NATIONAL GIRL CHILD DAY AT GIRLS HOSTEL No. 8, PANJAB UNIVERSITY, CHANDIGARH

Girls Hostel no.8 and NSS, Panjab University, Chandigarh has marked the National Girl Child Day with the children of construction workers at its premises. These children were given an opportunity to showcase their talent through drawing. The children made different drawings on various themes like environment, health, pollution and Republic Day.

Smt. Simran Kaur, Warden, Girls hostel no 8 and coordinator of the event said that “this program was organized to bring the feeling of equality among all, irrespective of any class or status”. She also said that the state of Punjab has dedicated the whole month of January 2021 to the Girl Child.

The occasion was graced by Prof S K Tomar and Prof Sukhbir Kaur,  DSW, (male and female respectively) along with the wardens namely Harjit Kaur, Anju Goyal, Manisha Sharma, Archana and Vishal Sharma.

Prof S K Tomar, Dean Student Welfare(DSW), interacted with the children and got overwhelmed by the responses given by them. He appericiated the efforts made the Hostel Warden and NSS to make it happen in this winter. Prof Sukhbir Kaur, DSW ( girls) also interacted with the few mothers who accompanied their young children. She congratulated the whole team of hostel staff and NSS.

Sh. Gaurav Gaur,  NSS Programme Officer shared that all these children were handed over the health kits which included a toothbrush,  toothpaste, soap, cold cream and a comb. He also thanked everyone and gave special Appreciation for the five  students Ramandeep, Navjot, Sonia, Shubham and Narendra for coordinating the event so well. These students reinforced the practice of hand washing and maintaining personal hygiene with these children.

The Department of Library and Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised Alumni Meet in virtual mode. Prof. I. V. Malhan, former Dean Academics, Central University of Himachal Pradesh and alumnus of the department was the chief Guest and Mr. V. K. Grover, former Deputy Librarian was the guest of honour. The department hounered two eminent alumni, Prof. R. L. Raina, Vice Chancellor, JK Lakshmipat University, Jaipur and Prof. Jagtar Singh, Former Dean Faculty, Education and Information Science, Punjabi University, Patiala for their contribution. In the second session, the memories and experiences were shared by the members. Mr. Sushil Jain, Alumnus of the first batch (1960) of department also shared his memories and experiences. Prof. Preeti Mahajan, Chairperson of the department moderated the second session and Prof. Rupak Chakravarty presented vote of thanks. Faculty Training School under UGC Networking Programme concludes at UIPS, PU

Chandigarh January 23, 2021

The one-week long Training School under UGC Networking Resource Centre in Pharmaceutical Sciences on the theme “Training Pharmacy Professionals to Accomplish Mission – Make in India: Step Forth to Promote Academic Entrepreneurship” conducted by University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, from January 18 to 23, 2021 successfully concluded today virtually via Cisco WebEx Events.

During the Programme, a group of 31 faculty and research scholars from 12 states of the country was trained. A total of 19 lectures and 5 sessions were conducted by 25 eminent speakers‎ from various academic institutions, industries, CEOS, MDs of start-ups, innovation officers and ambassadors and research organizations with expertise in diverse disciplines of of pharmaceutical sciences, together with the in-house faculty of UIPS.

During the valedictory programme, Dr Manish Diwan, Head, Strategic Planning and Entrepreneurship Development, BIRAC, New Delhi, was the Chief Guest and delivered the valedictory lecture on “Biosciences to Bioeconomy”. He emphasized on Nurturing innovations from ideation to commercialization. He gave an insight into the ample number of grants available to the faculty and students with innovative ideas. He also motivated all the participants to take up entrepreneurship.

Professor Ranju Bansal, Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, welcomed the august gathering. Professor O. P. Katare, Course Coordinator, briefed about the antecedents of the weeklong course. A special Colloquium on “Creating a culture of Innovation– the people aspect” by Ms Veena Swarup, Former Director HR, Engineers India Ltd, and Chairperson, NOWE@DMA (Network of Women Entrepreneurs) was the main highlight of the week. In her talk, she exquisitely explained the treasure of human resource in any Institute. She quoted “Best way to predict your future is to create it” and emphasized that we should value and appreciate all employees or any human resource involved in the working of academic or industrial set-up. All the participants enjoyed her illustrious talk.

Around 200 faculty, students and selected faculty participants enthusiastically attended the weeklong events.

Annual Global Alumni Meet in Dept of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies PU

Today a web based Global Annual Alumni Meet was organized in the department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies PU Chandigarh in collaboration with Panjab University Alumni Association on the occasion of its 50th Golden Jubilee Celebration. Program was started with the recitation of Shabad Gayan “Deh Shiva bar mohe ihai shubh karman te kabhun na taron” by students of Gurmat College Patiala.

In her welcome-cum-introductory address Prof. Jaspal Kaur Kaang, Professor & Academic Incharge of the Department gave a brief account of achievements of the department during 50 years as well as of it’s alumni. Department was established in the year of 1970 by Government of India on the occasion of 500th Birth centennial of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Two digital projects Documentation of History and Achievements of the department during the last 50 years, and Vichar Prabandh of Guru Tegh Bahadur Bani were launched on this occasion.

In his inaugural address, Dr. V R Sinha, Dean Research of university said that Alumni are real Brand Ambassadors of any institution. Alumni always gives a fine exposure and glimpse of their institution. The worth of any institution is determined by the contributions and positions of it’s students.

The Eminent Speaker was Dr. Gurinder Singh Mann, Director, Global Institute of Sikh Studies California (USA). In his address he said that Guru Nanak established a path full of spiritual and practical knowledge. He said that we should be futuristic in our belief, actions and spirit based upon the valuable knowledge that consists in the Shri Guru Granth Sahib.

Dr. Jaspal Singh, Former VC PU Patiala & Member of Minority Commission, GoI and Dr. Jasbir Kaur, Former Dean, PU Patiala & Principal, Gurmat College, Patiala were hounoured for their valuable contributions in their respective fields.

Chief guest was Dr. R K Singla, DUI of PU Chandigarh. The president of the session was Dr. Jaspal Singh, Former VC PU Patiala & Member of Minority Commission, GoI. In his presidential address he said that Guru Granth Sahib is not only a spiritual Granth but also a storehouse of political, social and economic thoughts. He also said that Guru Nanak was a global teacher, educator and mentor and Sikh Studies is a comprehensive approach which works for all-rounded development and growth of the whole society.

Alumni meet by Department of Zoology, PU

Chandigarh January 21, 2021

In the unprecedented situation due to COVID-19, first ever online alumni meet was organized by the Department of Zoology, Panjab University Chandigarh today on 21st January, 2021 as part of PU Annual Global Alumni Meet being held from January 18 to 23, 2021. The meet was attended by about 150 alumni of the department.

Dr Ravneet Kaur, Co-ordinator, introduced the event and Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Chairperson, Department of Zoology and convenor of the meet welcomed the distinguished guests and alumni in this online event. Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University in his address welcomed the alumni and stressed on the importance of collaborations between different alumni, who are serving in different parts of the world. He also suggested that department of zoology should keep in record the contributions and ideas from various alumni, which will help in the growth of the department as well as Panjab University. Memorial tributes were paid to renowned alumni of Zoology Department, Prof Hans Raj Pajni (Entomologist), Prof Mohinder Singh Johal (Fish Biologist) and Prof. Suraj Prakash Sharma (Insect Gerontology, Neurobiology), during the event by Prof Neelima R Kumar.

Prof RC Sobti (Padma Shri Awardee), former Vice Chancellor, Panjab University and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University talked about the journey of Zoology department from past to present. Award ceremony was followed by interaction among the participants of the meet.

Prof VK Walia and Dr Archana Chauhan took the audience on a virtual trip to Panjab University and department of zoology. Renowned alumna of the department Ms. Mamta Bansal, IRS (Income Tax Commissioner, Mumbai) delivered the motivational talk during the event. She encouraged the students to dream high and work hard to achieve them.

FDP on ‘Effective Communication in Digital Era’ concludes

The seven day online Faculty Development Program on the theme ‘Effective Communication in the Digital Era’ organized by HRDC, Panjab University concluded today. The course was attended by 36 participants representing 22  disciplines including sciences, social sciences, humanities and eight states including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, Assam, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chandigarh. Prof. Nandita Singh, from Dept of Education, PU was the key note speaker and Prof. S.K. Tomar, honorary Director, HRDC, PU was the chief guest for the occasion.

Prof. Tomar spoke about the significance of effective communication as he compared communication to the respiratory system essential for human survival. He also pointed out the importance of precision and logic in making communication effective. Prof. Singh brought in the component of consciousness in making communication effective in the digital era. Recipient of the Heartfulness Educator Award 2020, Prof. Singh explained how mind and heart play a significant role in making communication effective in this digital era. Dr. Bhavneet Bhatti, Course Coordinator and Assistant Professor, School of Communication Studies, presented the report of the FDP and informed that 20 resource persons from various parts of the country and abroad conducted sessions on diverse aspects of effective digital communications. These included sessions on digital communication skills, fact checking in the digital content, online tools for digital classrooms, Digital storytelling, Media and Empathy, Digital Era and Mental Health to name a few. Prof. Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, HRDC, PU spoke to the participants about the challenges and advantages of online training programs.

Alumni Re-lived Old Memories at U.I.F.T. Virtual ‘Reconnect’

Nearly 70 Alumni of the University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT & VD), Panjab University participated in the first of its kind Virtual “Reconnect 2021” Meet hosted by the institute.

Two former students, Surbhi Singla, a leading model who has walked the ramp for leading brands and fashion designers, and Anupreet Sidhu, who runs her fashion label ‘Sidhuji’, were awarded at the virtual Meet. 

“It is due to all teachers’ support that I reached this position. Sometimes I had to miss classes to walk the ramp or to receive an award; it was because the UIFT family understood me that I could do something,” said Surbhi. 

Manisha Dhiman, a budding entrepreneur who has launched her own handicrafts’ brand, ‘Kalakari,’ was also a part of the Reconnect, where she shared her success story. “I wanted to make crafts merchandise that was durable. Other handicrafts that I used to see had this aspect missing. I began taking feedback of my first products from hostel friends and department faculty,” she said. Margee Sharma, an upcoming blogger who has worked with leading brands, was also a part of the Meet and shared her journey.

Dr. Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson UIFT & VD  warmly welcomed the former students and was reminiscent of the old days. “We had a humble beginning of U.I.F.T. with just five rooms in the old building. Gradually with the support of university administration, the alumni, faculty, and students, we have progressed leaps and bounds. We have hosted national and international events, and we aim to set higher benchmarks,” she said. 

‘Reconnect’ Convenor Dr. Rita Kant took friendly feedback from the alumni on their current pursuits and plans. “It is a great feeling to see the former students’ back-all on one platform. I am sure this Reconnect will benefit the institute in many ways,” she added. 

A novel initiative was announced at the ‘Reconnect 2021’ by the Chairperson- to commence a special lecture series-cum-regular interaction of ‘Alumni’ with the department’s current students.

ONE WEEK GLOBAL ALUMNI MEET (VIRTUAL MODE) KICKSTARTED AT PU

Panjab University Alumni Association triumphantly surmounting all odds in these tempestuous times and keeping upbeat and orchestrating “Global Alumni Meet”. One of the idiosyncrasies of this event is the agglomeration of the alumnus from across the globe that too in virtual mode. Day 1 of the global alumni meet witnessed the ‘Tryst with illustrious alumni: Reminiscences and roadmap’, a journey from the “Portals of PU” to eminence by some acclaimed doers of the society.

Prof. Anupama Sharma, Dean Alumni Relations said that this is fortuitous and momentous occasion for PUAA to have the eminent and distinguished alumni who have already carved a niche for themselves in their careers. She highlighted the details of the meet which was followed by the virtual tour of Panjab University. Professor R K Singla, Dean University Instructions flagged off the ceremony by welcoming the alumnus bringing laurels and accolades to the institution and always delivering worth more than the expectations. He also emphasized the heritage created by PU and the synergy that it acquaints to at two different levels defining the alma mater as the intellectual capital of the university. The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Professor Raj Kumar enchanted the fact the even the hardships of a pandemic could not resist the belongingness that the alumni converse. He proudly cherished that sky is the only limit with the potential possessed by the past and present generation of this unparalleled teaching and training institution.

Smt. Keshni Anand Arora, IAS, Former Chief Secretary, Haryana  Chairperson, Haryana Water Resources Authority shared her thoughts on global alumni meet and praised this extraordinary initiative  of   collaborating   with  alumnus from all walks of life in tandem she also appreciated the  video made by PUAA as it brought the good old memories of campus back  which she had  rejoiced during her childhood as her father was a professor in Panjab University at that time. She was explicitly astounded by the conducive environment that the university provided and remembered how qualities instilled by PU helped her  and her 2 sisters who later on graduated to the rank of  chief secretaries and also made her daughter  an IPS officer. She proposed a dynamic platform and dynamic database to aid students from a well structured network and get suggestions from alumni about their careers. She also talked about how she has been  associated with leadership courses for quite a long period of time now and wanted to do even more like  providing  mentorship to the students who want to be in civil services. She ended on the note saying that she is ready to go an extra mile for the  University.

Dr. Aditya Narayan Purohit, Padam Shree Awardee talked about his experience how he entered PU and what was atmosphere of  PU at that time. He did not have any fellowship at that time  and got Rs 30 as a typist and  how then  a science fair was organized which turned out be a game changer for him and Prof. A.C.Joshi inaugurated the same. Prof Joshi  came to his stall and asked questions from him and when he came to know that he  was not  being offered fellowship because he  had come from other institute  he was awarded fellowship by changing rules in just  4 days . That’s how his journey at PU started.  He laid emphasis on such kind of culture  and conducive atmosphere to be prevelant in  PU  which not only strengthens and accentuates minimization of  gap between students and teachers but also fosters a sense of equality and inclusiveness and also  induces  free flow of communication and interaction which are the institution’s biggest asset.

Sh. Ashwani Pahuja, ED & Chief Sustainability officer, Dalmia Cement explained how PU is his 2nd home. He cherished those days as best days of his life and time he spent at student centre having coffee. He said this nostalgia could  make us laugh and cry which is happening today. He also highlighted how such meets provide an opportunity to reflect on the learnings and achievements they have adored so far and also described this platform as a stepping stone for starting a conversation regarding the climate change and sustainability crisis that the whole world is facing and how compatriots can come together to initiate a change. He also made it prominent that how it is the time to become a part of the solution. Then he talked his experience in cement sector and how he utilized his learnings from the university. He also focused on making India carbon based economy by changing to renewable energy, green hydrogen, green methane and advanced biofuels. For this to happen, students and universities have to rethink , reinnovate which can be done by doing more research, changing curriculum to today’s time.

Mr. Vikas Kaushal, Global Head, A T Kearney, divulged a lot of information regarding his college days especially  hostel no 3 and 6 and reminisced that wonderful time How getting basic education form great faculty and environment played a big role and how it prepared him for the future. Then he elucidated his journey of 20 years of working in global firms and his experiences in the changing world where stakes are much higher, diversity of views, and explosion of information and skills are coming in at a much faster pace and how trends are changing from globalization to nationalism, Business decision cycles have  shortened at the same time due to uncertainty, consumer behavior is changing. So students need to increase their exposure, learn what is  happening globally and look for options which were not present earlier. And for university he urged to provide conducive environment for learning, adopt new ideas, bring in industry and overall enriching environment which helped him in anchoring whatever he has become today.

Ms.Lalita Sachdeva, UNICEF, India also pointed out how delighted and humbled she was  to be a part of the PU family and the gist of it that drives her to be the change and work for it. She feels forever indebted for the multi disciplinary skills manifested by PU in students which endeavours them to take up society’s interest also in addition to there personal accomplishments. Development of empathy towards environment and engagement with communities to stand and deliver has been the stand out contribution that PU has been successful to make is the biggest achievement she felt.

Concluding the first day of the global alumni meet organised by PUAA, Professor V.R Sinha, Dean Research proposed a formal vote of thanks to the ones attending the meet and also to the ones who took  excruciating efforts and worked doggedly and meticulously  to make it happen and contributing to make it a resounding success. He also appreciated the time such esteemed stalwarts devoted towards this event and also felicitated for all that they have done, have been doing and will continue to do so. Dr. Monika Aggarwal, Associate Professor, UIAMS moderated the session. Lastly the event was concluded after Punjabi folk presented by Dr. Tejinder Gill, Assistant Director, Department of Youth Welfare, Panjab University. WEBINAR- “SUSTAINABLE LIFE STYLE AND ENTREPRENUERSHIP”

Dr Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights & Duties welcomed the speaker Ms. Ritika Sadana, founder of Eco Karma, Uttarakhand, Dehradun.

Introducing the resource person Dr Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson of UIFT & VD, spoke about the accomplishments of Ms Ritika Sadana, a young social entrepreneur, a strong team player with outstanding team building, communication and interpersonal skills, analytical bent of mind and thorough problem-solving skills, qualities that are important for any start-up or business.

Ms. Ritika Sadana, elaborated different facets of sustainability. She said that we are directly and indirectly involved in activities that contribute to a rise in greenhouse gases on this planet and thus lead to Carbon Foot Printing. She stressed that though in all operations, we cannot have zero waste but we can all strive to produce low waste at an individual level. For this, efforts or initiatives have to be taken up on daily basis. It is important to have ‘conscious thinking’. The focus should be on reduction, reuse, recycle and recycling. The participants were shown products such as curtain tie ups, toothbrushes, door mats, etc. These are produced by different self-help groups in various areas. She also voiced for local production. She discussed how her team works on Waste Management- a Nagar Nigam project where new is created out of the waste.

They make and sell only the biodegradable and more sustainable products like, Bamboo Toothbrushes, Recycled paper pens, Bamboo & wheat straws, coconut shell products, Organic Body Butter, Balms & Soaps etc., in-house and with help of Women self-help groups. Their motive is to move towards sustainability, encourage women to stabilise and make this place more liveable.
