PU Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz celebrates its 10th Birth Anniversary & World Radio Day

World Radio Day was celebrated at School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, today. The Community Radio Station of Panjab University, Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz, also completed its ten years, today.

On this special occasion, SCS organised an online event to mark the celebration of the two occasions. This day will be remembered as another special day as Dr. Sumedha Singh, Coordinator, Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz, Vice-president, Community Radio Association of India (North), and Chairperson, School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, signed a virtual MoU with CIET NCERT for broadcasting their education based content. Prof. (Dr.) Amarendra Behera, Joint Director, CIET NCERT, was present during the event as Guest of Honour to execute the virtual MoU. He shared his experience and memories related to radio broadcasting.

Based on the MoU, Dr. Sumedha Singh also announced the launch of a new program – Qitaabee Navaab – that will broadcast the educational content shared by CIET NCERT. Qitaabee Navaab will be a part of an ongoing program, Shiksha Ke Anek Aayaam, being broadcast thrice a day: 11:00 am, 03:00 pm, and 07:00 pm. The content to be broadcast through Qitaabee Navaab is curriculum based (including audio books & audio lessons), as well as enrichment programs (including drama, music, rhyme, radio games, quiz, stories, talks etc. based on educational concepts).

Other guest speakers present during the event were Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Mishra, Dean, Academics, Chitkara International University, and Dr. Pankaj Garg, Programming Head, Radio Chitkara. Prof. Mishra talked about the contribution of radio in uplifting the society. He also re-emphasized on the need of private radio stations airing news content as well as patenting their content. Dr. Garg talked about how the present technology has made radio more accessible to the public. Dr. Suresh Gaur who has worked for many years on this medium shared his experience of working on radio stations. Two people from the participants, Mr. Rajesh and Adv. Mahima Singh who have also been long associated with the world of radio shared their experiences. Adv. Mahima Singh who worked as a child artist on radio remembered those days at All India Radio when the anchors were called didi and children used to have that sense of belongingness with the programs.

Other faculty members of the School of Communication Studies, Prof. (Dr) Archana Singh, Jayanth Narayanpethkar and Dr. Bhavneet Bhatti shared their own experiences of establishing and running Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz housed in the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The event concluded with the cake cutting ceremony in the studios of Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz where most of the Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz and SCS family members were present. Dr. Sumedha Singh presented her special vote of thanks to Mr. Sunil Sharma for his extraordinary contribution to the functioning of Jyotirgamaya 91.2 MHz.

Prof (Dr) VK Paul, Member Niti Aayog, Releases Booklet on ‘COVID-19 Prevention- Role of Residential Welfare Association

Prof (Dr) VK Paul, Member NITI Aayog, released the infographic booklet – ‘COVID-19 Prevention- Role of Residential Welfare Association’. Professor Vinod K. Paul is a well-known medical professional and has been a faculty member at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, for over three decades.

Prof (Dr) VK Paul commended the efforts of Dr. Suman Mor, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh; Dr. Suneela Garg, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi and Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Department of Community Medicine & School of Public Health, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh for bringing out the booklet on ‘COVID-19 Prevention: Role of Residential Welfare Association’.

Prof Paul mentioned that Residential Welfare Associations play a significant role in restricting the spread of COVID-19. This booklet emphasizes how they can further elaborate on their role in disease prevention, including their role in addressing the stigma and discrimination of COVID-19 patients and corona warriors. He added that Residential Welfare Association could provide counseling and support to COVID-19 affected families and specifically to the vulnerable members.

Prof Paul specifically stressed that Residential Welfare Association have a major role to play to address the issue of vaccine hesitancy, providing the correct information about vaccine & clearing the myths

Dr. Suneela Garg, Director Professor HAG, Maulana Azad Medical College and President-Elect- Indian Association of Public Health and Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine mentioned that gated community are the pillar of societies and they have a crucial role in promoting the COVID appropriate behavior to prevent the spread of diseases.

Dr. Suman Mor said that Residential Welfare Association played a significant role during the covid crisis’s peak by supporting the vulnerable population and now they can help them by providing all necessary support for the COVID vaccine.

Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal mentioned that the infographic booklet provides guidelines in simple pictorial languages about their responsibilities, including dos and don’ts, to restrict the emergence of coronavirus disease.

The authors mentioned that this infographic booklet aimed to guide the RWAs to promote COVID-appropriate behavior as scientists believe that new strain could even be worse and we need to be vigilant. The infographic is developed in partnership with Indian Public Health (IPHA) and the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM).

Youth Welfare, PU and RGC organized Musical Programme to Celebrate 400th Birth Anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji

As a part of series of programs of Punjab Government and Panjab University, Chandigarh  to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur ji , students musical program: ‘Manukhta da Rehbar Guru Teg Bahadur ‘ was organised in online as well as offline mode at Ramgarhia Girls College (RGC).

Dr. V.R. Sinha, Dean University Instructions, in his inaugural address praised the efforts of RGC by saying that these kinds of programs are very relieving in such tough times because remembering the great Gurus and their efforts for the welfare of mankind surely soothe every soul.

Prof. Sanjay Kaushik, Dean College Development Council was the Chief Guest and he expressed his views by saying that  the history of mankind is the witness of the fact that the martyrdom of the 9th Guru was so great that it shielded not only the humanity  in those times but paved the way for the  foundation of the Sikh Panth by his son Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

Dr. Tejinder Kaur, Director Education, S.G.P.C, while praising the participants said that these kind of programs inspire young generation to follow the teachings of the great Gurus and these efforts must be appreciated.

S. Ranjodh Singh, President Ramgarhia Educational Council said that the world today needs to seek inspiration from the Sikh religion as this is the treasure house of divine knowledge and Guru Teg Bahadur ji sacrificed his life for the welfare of mankind, this is the greatest of all religions where Gurus themselves gave away their lives to bring peace and to teach the lesson of equality to the people.

Dr. Nirmal Jaura, Director Youth Welfare Department said that 12 colleges participated in this programme and students were highly enthusiastic and the contribution of Ramgarhia Girls College in organizing this programme is remarkable.

Earlier, Principal Dr.Inderjit Kaur welcomed all the guests and said that this is a great effort by Youth Welfare Department  of Panjab University  that provided a platform to these 12 colleges to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji in a musical way.

Cleanliness Drive at PU

Chandigarh February 11, 2021

A cleanliness drive was conducted today in the Children Park near Teachers’ Flats, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

            The wardens, students and employees of Girls Hostel No. 1 and Boys Hostel no. 3 along with NSS volunteers carried out the cleanliness of this park.

            Those who participated included Dr. Anju Goyal, Dr. JS Sehrawat, Dr. Amit Chauhan, Dr. Simran, Dr. Gagandeep Singh, Program Officer NSS from UIET and motivated the students and employees for keeping the University premises clean. The park was cleaned, trees and grass were pruned, public utilities were sanitized and waste was disposed of during the collective efforts of all those participated in the cleanliness drive.

6th Pharmaceutical Sciences Virtual Convocation held today at PU

Chandigarh organized the 6th Pharmaceutical Sciences Convocation virtually.

        The main highlight of the Convocation was the video compilation of the whole
program, which was played during the event. The nicely compiled video depicting
events ranging from academic procession to Panjab University Anthem to the award of
degrees to the graduands, was very well appreciated by one and all who attended.


        The event began with the Panjab University anthem followed by a peek into
the illustrious 76 years of the Institute starting from its pre-independence humble
beginning in the year 1944 at Lahore. The Chairperson, UIPS Professor Indu Pal Kaur
welcomed and introduced the Chief Guest of the occasion Mr Rabbur Reza, a proud
alumnus of UIPS and the Chief Operating Officer, Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited,
Bangladesh.

        Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Professor Raj Kumar sensitized the young
graduating students to keep thriving to achieve higher echelons and strive hard to
keep this hard-earned legacy of their alma mater alive as they are the future of the
nation. He instigated them to keep their spirits high and continue their march
forward in the profession with utmost sincerity and with brighter innovative ideas.”


        Mr Rabbur Reza, in his convocation address cheered the audience by sharing
his personal, beautifully cherished moments spent at UIPS, some 28 years ago.
Sharing his roadmap of professional journey, he highlighted how UIPS shaped his
career and emphasized on the role of India as ‘Pharmacy of the world’ in the current
unprecedented times. He motivated the students to keep expanding their horizons, get
exposure to different environments and be comfortable with the uncertainties of
life. He congratulated and gave blessings to all the upcoming young graduates.


        Professor Ranju Bansal, Dean (2020), Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences,
addressed the students and administered the “Pharmacist’s Oath for Code of
Pharmaceutical Ethics” to the graduands. Around 90 students including B.Pharm.
M.Pharm. and Ph.D. graduands were conferred their degrees where alongwith the
degrees, recorded video clips of some were played too.


        The valedictorians, Miss Palak Jhamb and Miss Pariksha Oberoi from B. Pharm.
and Miss Riya Jain from M.Pharm presented their salutations for the Institute
describing how the UIPS nurtured and shaped them and their future both personally
and professionally. The event concluded with the National Anthem.

P.U. Sanskrit workshop

A seven-day National Workshop on the Use of Chcandas and Alankaras was organized by the Sanskrit Department on 3-9 February 2021, sponsored by the Central Sanskrit University (Rashtriya SanskritSansthan), Janakpuri, New Delhi. About 50 participants took part in this workshop, including college, university teachers, research scholars and P.G. students. Nearly 35 participants joined Online and nearly 20  participants of the department of Sanskrit, who had a hindrance in the online class especially due to network problem in Haryana also participated offline, following the corona rules. On the first day President awardee,Padmashri Prof. AbhirajRajendra Mishra gave a detailed account of the rich poetry of Sanskrit and modern poetry in his two lectures.

After this, Dr. NareshBatra (Ambala), Dr. Vikram Kumar (Chandigarh), Prof. Satish Kumar Kapoor (Jammu), Prof. Rabindra Kumar Panda (Baroda, Gujarat) and Prof. Jagdish Prasad Semwal (Hoshiarpur) delivered their special lectures on the topic.The Chairperson, Prof. V.K. Alankar took AbhyaasSatra (Practical Session) daily and gave six Lectures on Sanskrit Translation, Sanskrit Meter and Alankaras and made students write rhyme and verse in practice session with daily lectures.

Mayor calls a meeting of UNDP for implementing sustainable development goals

Chandigarh, February 9:- Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh today called a meeting of region head of UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) to support all state and UT Governments in implementing sustainable development goals (SDGs) through cutting edge technical expertise and global best practices.

During the meeting Mr. Vikas Verma, North region head of UNDP proposed to conduct visioning exercise to make Chandigarh SDG ready for 2030. UNDP offered to support Municipal Corporation Chandigarh to position Chandigarh as ‘SDG Smart City’ which will be a model city in the world and a destination of choice for the new innovators and younger generation working towards a sustainable future.

The UNDP is working on ground in more than 170 countries and focuses on providing technical assistance, policy advice and development support services in the areas of inclusive growth, system and institutional strengthening and sustainable energy, environment and resilience.

Admission to M.Phil, Punjabi Studies, PU made open

The process for admission to M.Phil. (Guru Granth Sahib Studies) academic session 2020-2021 has been started by the School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Willing students may submit their application/request for admission by 26.2.2021 (5.00 p.m.) in the office of the Department.  The format of the request is prescribed on the 2nd page of this pdf file/notice.  Student, having master’s degree in any faculty/stream, with minimum 55% marks are eligible for admission. Reservation of seats will be as per PU rules.

               The admission to M.Phil. (GGSS) is made on the basis on the Entrance Test conducted by the Department of Punjabi at its own level. Duration of Entrance Test will be two hour and the test will be held on 2.3.2021 (10.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m.) in Department of Punjabi (Arts Block-I). The medium of test will be in both Punjabi and English languages. The candidate may choose to attempt his paper either in Punjabi or in English.  Result will be declared on 10.3.2021.   It is pertinent to mention here that this test will not be treated as eligibility test for admission to Ph.D.

               The syllabi for the test will be Historical, Philosophical, Linguistic and Poetical aspects of Guru Granth Sahib Studies, and Comparative Studies of Religions.
