PU Office Timings to be from 9am to 2pm Till 31st May

For Detailed News-

In order to review the status of COVID-19 cases in Panjab University, on the basis of information received through Online Portal launched for the purpose, from different departments/branches/offices of the University and to suggest measures to contain the further spread of corona cases, it has been decided after a threadbare discussion in an online meeting, on the matter, held today, to implement the following measures with effect from 21.05.2021: –

       1.   The Office timings of the University may be observed from 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. with 50% staff strength. The roster for the same shall be prepared by the concerned Controlling Officer. However, Officers of the level of Office Superintendent and above shall attend the office on a daily basis.

2.     The remaining non-attending 50% staff shall work from home under the instructions of their Controlling Officers.

3.     No staff shall leave the station without the prior sanction of the Controlling Officer.

4.     In order to attend to the urgent and time-bound assignments and also to the matters concerning students/research scholars requiring immediate intervention, the concerned Controlling Officers shall attend the office with concerned subordinate staff, if required, beyond 2.00 p.m. also.

5.     There shall not be any public dealing up to 31.05.2021 except with the prior appointment of the concerned HOD that too for urgent issues only.

6.     With respect to Field Workers, the concerned Heads of the Department/Office may take a decision to stagger their timings/strength, if required, keeping in view the COVID-19 protocols.

PU VC holds meeting of Covid Task Force

A meeting  of the Covid Task Force constituted by Prof Raj Kumar,Vice Chancellor, Panjab University as per the UGC guidelines was held today .  PU VC expressed his concern towards Panjab University fraternity for COVID-19.  He urged all to strictly follow the SOPs issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and now to be followed at a war footing level.  He also advised the DUI and the Registrar to monitor  adherence of the same through various committees under their direct supervision . 

The Vice Chancellor also suggested exploring the possibility  of establishing COVID care Centre at the University level for the welfare and wellbeing of the PU employees. Also, isolation centre for Home quarantined patients was discussed to be set up on priority basis.

The Registrar suggested that a certain number of beds in the University COVID Care Centre which exists in the  International Hostel being used by the UT Administration should be earmarked for the University fraternity in case of emergency. The  Vice Chancellor assured to  have a personal word with the concerned authorities and asked the Registrar and DUI to follow it up officially too.

He also urged the CMO and Principle of Dental College to look for different ways and talk to the authorities for early vaccination for PU employees and their faculty.  Various members of the Committee were asked to train volunteers with the help of NSS, NCC for extending help for mental counseling, mental health, psychosocial support and wellbeing of the stakeholders.

PU Library Science celebrates International Museum Day

The Department of Library & Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated International Museum Day 2021 today through online mode .

The Theme of the event was “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine”. The event commenced with a brief introduction, history and significance about this day. It is coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) since 1977 to raise awareness about the significance of Museums with respect to culture exchange, enrichment of cultures and fostering creativity, imagination & respect for diversity. ICOM is based at Paris.

All the faculty members of the department presented their views on the relevance of museums in the society. They emphasized that museums are not just repositories of objects and artefacts but they hold up a mirror to society about tangible and intangible heritage of humanity.

Students took part in various activities like showcasing the 3-D virtual tour of the eminent museums of the world and shared their viewpoints regarding sustaining the museums in the future through innovative solutions.

PU HOLDS 23rd SELF-DEVELOPMENT VIRTUAL INTERACTIVE SESSION ON, MAGIC OF MORNING MEDITATION.

In the weekly lecture series  as a part of 7th International Online SDP, Panjab University organised the 23rd session, ‘Magic Of Meditation’, on Sunday, 16th May, 2021 at 4:00 PM IST. The evening was once again rocked by the scintillating  speech of honourable speaker for the day, Ms Manjula Verma , who is a Science teacher by profession and a Heartfulness Meditation Trainer, from Amritsar.

The session began with a meditative relaxation by Ms Tanya Gupta from Department of Zoology, Panjab University. This was followed by Ms Akanksha Mahajan, PhD scholar from University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, PU who welcomed Ms Manjula and introduced her with the aspiring attendees.

Ms Manjula addressed the gathering by introducing the practical aspects of meditation. She stressed on the importance of doing meditation in the early hours of morning- ‘The Amrit Vela’ by quoting the “Ten Maxims of Sahaj Marg.” She beautifully described the process of creation of the Universe through the well accepted scientific theory of Big Bang followed by the creation of life on Earth, as described in Vedas, from the vibrating entity, Om Rashmi, thus aligning Modern Science with Vedic Philosophy .

Ms Manjula explained about the type of atmosphere prevailed before creation and told that meditating in early hours of morning help us to attain the same state of contraction (Mahapralaya)She then proceeded to shed light on how the early morning hours are at par with the suitable environment of our surroundings that stands in harmony with our inner Higher self. They are neither hot as in daytime, nor as cold as in nights, but a perfect amalgamation of both. Also at this point of time, the Sushumna Nadi between lunar energy channel ( chandra nadi connected to left nostril)and Solar energy channel (Surya nadi connected to right nostril) one, is functional, and the cosmic energy flow towards our body is maximum. This time there is complete  balance in our peripheral nervous system, sympathetic and para sympathetic.She asked everyone to check their breathing pattern while explaining about Suraya Nadi and Chandra Nadi.

The speaker also unfolded the mystery around the benefits of a cleaning technique to wash out all the accumulated, unwanted things so impressed on the mindset of oneself during the day’s time. This complementary, cleansing half an hour process can refresh the being, amazingly. She also sensitised about daily diary writing, especially after meditation to judge the inner condition while allowing one to “introspect and correct” . She concluded her talk by focusing on how the right time, place and posture is necessary to experience meditation in all its glory with maximum energy. 

Prof O.P. Katare, SDP Coordinator and Professor from University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, PU invited the participants to take training in meditation from the Heartfulness trainers who are spread all over the globe in around 160 countries. The lecture was a perfect mix of Science and Spirituality and witnessed a gathering of more than 50 participants including post-graduate students and research scholars of various disciplines, teachers and principals as well as members from the corporate  sector. Notably, the session was graced by the high level dignitaries from different places like Prof Archna Pandey, Dean Faculty, Central University, Sagar MP, Prof Gautam Singhavi, BITS Pilani, Rajasthan, Ms Harpreet Gill, HR Director, Venus Remedies, Baddi, and Prof Nandita Singh Shukla and Latika Sharma of Education Department of Panjab University.  The session came to an end with a Vote of Thanks by Ms Akanksha Mahajan.

4th UILS Intra- Institute Mediation and Negotiation Competition 2021 Concluded at PU

The 4th Intra Institute Mediation and Negotiation Competition organized by University Institute of Legal Studies Alternative Dispute Resolution Client counselling(ADR CCL) BOARD, Panjab University from 13-16 May, concluded today.

UILS ADR CCL Board is steadily conducting events at department and national level to promote mediation and negotiation as alternative means of dispute resolution.

The final rounds were today presided over by the sitting High Court Judge Hon’ble Mr. Justice Jitendra Chauhan, alongwith Hon’ble Mr. Justice Rameshwar Singh Malik and Ms. Poonam Verma partner from J. Sagar & Associates, New Delhi. This was followed by Valedictory session in which Hon’ble Mr. Justice Jitender Chauhan, Judge Punjab & Haryana High Court declared the results. 

The closing ceremony began by the welcome address of Prof Rajinder Kaur, director UILS followed by the event report which was read by Dr. Jasmeet Gulati. There were total 300 participants in this event. 

Ms. Fiza Chaudhary and Ms. Mannat Sharma (1st Year Students) were adjudged as BEST NEGOTIATING PAIR and were awarded a cash prize of Rs. 4000 followed by Mr. Shivain Arora and Mr. Nandish Munjal (5th year Students) being declared the SECOND BEST NEGOTIATING PAIR and a cash prize of Rs. 2000. Ms Arushi Lamba was declared the BEST MEDIATOR and Ms. Saumya Singh the SECOND BEST MEDIATOR.

International webinar on the Culture of Learning and Teaching

 Prof Anju Suri, Dean International Students , welcomed the guests and highlighted the significance of education and learning in an independent India and how good learning can bring a positive change in our society. 

Prof Rani Mehta, Chairperson, Department of Sociology , introduced the Vice Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar and the key speaker Prof Janos Gyori who has an illustrious career in formal education, multi and intercultural education and knowledge management .

 Prof Raj Kumar in his inaugural address focused on the significance of culture of learning through cultural values and how cultural uniqueness of each country can strengthen humanity especially during these critical pandemic times  by solving the psychological issues of the academic fraternity. 

Professor Janos Gyori elaborated on the importance of culture in understanding the outside physical, social environment as well as the inner cognitive psychological environment. He emphasized that the customs, behaviour, ideas and beliefs are able to shape the cultural teaching of individuals and illustrated the concept of cultural acquisition by giving examples of countries like Japan and Canada. He also mentioned the differences in educational set up between India and Hungary such as India being multicultural in nature while Hungary having more western traditions and comparatively being less traditional in approach. India is also a multi Linguistic society with influence of various languages on the culture of education while Hungary has one common language spoken by everybody. He also elaborated on the system of education given by Tagore and Gandhi in India which is based on the spirit of freedom in choice of subjects and teachers .

 The vote of Thanks was given by Prof Rani Mehta, Chairperson, Sociology Department in which she mentioned in concluding remarks  about the sayings of Swami Vivekananda and Swami Sivananda on true education which emphasized on character building ,morality and expanded intellect.

271 Molekule Air Purifiers received at PU from Molekule USA

USA in partnership with the Panjab University to get Molekule air purifiers to COVID wards and ICUs at various hospitals in Chandigarh and Punjab, including makeshift COVID hospital at the Panjab University. Today,  Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Director SAIF/CIL and Dr. Rajeev Kumar from Environment Studies received 271 Molekule Air purifier units at SAIF/CIL, Panjab University.

Dr. Jaspreet Singh Dhau Panjab University’s distinguished Alumni and Head of R&D at Molekule Inc. USA demonstrated assembling Air Purifier to the technical staff members of SAIF/CIL through online mode.

Workshop on “Brush Strokes” at UIFT & VD, PU

Chandigarh May 13, 2021

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT & VD), Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a two days online workshop on fabric painting titled ‘Brush Strokes’. Around 60 students from M.Sc. and B.Sc. Fashion and Lifestyle Technology participated in this workshop.

This workshop involved ornamentation of fabric surface with colours. At the onset of the workshop, Resource person Mrs. Santosh Verma,an artist and a freelancer, elaborated  about fabric painting on different surfaces and products. She gave an online live demonstration on numerous techniques. Beautiful outcomes with the effect of shibori;  tape masking creating different shapes on the surface was practiced by students on a variety of products. Not only fabric painting but bangle making utilising left over fabrics was another added feature of this workshop.  Ms Kirti, Faculty with UIFT, coordinated this workshop.

Dr Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson UIFT & VD remarked that these skills can help participants in future to create their own products/label and market these on a digital platform. The participants actively participated in the workshop, experimented with techniques and prepared samples as well as products like T-shirts, head bands, bandana, bangles etc. Shivani Singh, one of the participants said, “It was a really fantastic and informative workshop. I have really loved the way it has been conducted. This workshop will help us a lot in our professional and personal life. MCC extends the date of depositing water bills till May 31

Chandigarh, May 12:- The Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh has decided to extend the date of depositing water bills till 31st May, 2021.

This was decided in a meeting held today between Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor and Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.

The Mayor said that due to the COVID-19 lockdown period, the MCC has earlier extended the deposit date of water bills till 17th May but keeping in mind the present situation and ease to the citizens the deadline has been extended till 31st May, 2021.

3 Main Blocks of PU closed due to increase in number of cases

Keeping in mind the surge in number of cases in past few days in Administrative Block, University School of Open Learning, Aruna Ranjit Hall, of Panjab University, Chandigarh, a committee under the Chairmanship of Sh. Vikram Nayyar, officiating Registrar, held threadbare discussion on the matter in the presence of Prof. Sanjay Kaushik, Dean College Development Council, Prof. Devinder Singh, Secretary to Vice Chancellor, Dr. Jagat Bhushan, Controller of Examination,  Sh. Vikram Singh, Chief of University Security, Ms. Renuka B. Salwan, Director, Public Relations, Deputy Registrar(General) and Assistant Registrar(General Branch).

The following decisions were taken as a measure to contain further spread of this highly infectious Corona virus:-

·         The Administrative Block, Aruna Ranjit Chandra Hall and USOL shall remain closed on 12th and 13th May, 2021.  However, the staff of these buildings shall work from home under the instructions of their Controlling Officers.  No staff of these buildings shall leave the station without the prior approval of their concerned Controlling Officers.  In order to attend to the urgent time-bound assignments and also to the matters concerning Students’/Research Scholars requiring immediate intervention, the concerned Assistant Registrar shall attend the office with concerned subordinate staff, if required.

·         All these three buildings will be sanitized.

·         In order to capture the information regarding COVID cases in employees or their immediate family members, possibility of creation of an online portal be explored, for which a separate meeting shall be convened by inviting Director, Computer Center and Chief Medical Officer of P.U. Health Centre for their inputs.

·         The situation shall be reviewed on Monday, i.e. 17.05.2021, to suggest other measures, if required.
