Webinar on Yoga: A Holistic Approach to Health and Wellness

A webinar was organised on “Yoga: A Holistic Approach to Health and Wellness”

 by Panjab University Alumni Association in collaboration with Interdisciplinary Centre for Swami Vivekanand Studies and Dr. SSB University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology to commemorate International Day for Yoga on June 21. 

 Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University while presiding over the webinar  expressed that Yoga is believed to have started with the very dawn of civilization and derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘‘to unite’. Thus, the practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with that of the Universal Consciousness, indicating a synergistic harmony. He shared that PU is in a missionary mode to promote and popularise this ancient practise of ensuring wellness on the clarion call by our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Sh Narendra Modi and the directions of the University Grants Commission. He made an impassioned plea to all the attendees to popularise and practise Yoga.

Sh Rajiv Mishra, celebrated Master trainer from Project Life, Rajkot highlighted the cardinal principles and protocols of Yoga. He highlighted that modern Yoga focuses more on physical poses, breathing techniques, and meditation. He enumerated the ways and means of reducing stress and anxiety, tips of living a healthy life style and ensuring work-life balance through Yogic approach. He emphasised that in the contemporary times, everybody has conviction about yoga practices towards the preservation, maintenance and promotion of health. With the help of his team of instructors, he exhibited simple Yoga Asanas, enumerating their benefits and purposes, which was much appreciated by the audience.

Prof VR Sinha, Dean of University Instructions opined that scientific research has proven that yoga can help reduce stress levels, increase awareness, build immunity and strong physical and mental health along with helping regularize the systems of the body over all. Few simple yet effective yogic exercises can ensure good health and overall wellness in one’s life, thereby enhancing one’s productivity and efficiency. He highlighted the two-pronged approach through Yoga. Short term goal is to ensure physical fitness. In the long term, it aims at developing attitudinal changes that prevent the build up of toxins through various practices and meditative techniques. Thus, Yoga ensures purification of the body and mind.  

Prof Sanjeev Sharma, Coordinator, ICSVS informed that this webinar is being dedicated in the memory of Sh. Milkha Singh ji, the legendary and iconic sports persona who will always remain a role model due to his profound impact on all of us and commitment towards healthy lifestyle.

Prof Anupama Sharma, Dean Alumni Relations, PU highlighted the objective of the webinar in the form of the lecture cum demonstration for the benefit of the participants. She also highlighted various initiatives by Panjab University Alumni Association for showcasing the talent and achievements of its alumni

Prof. Amrit Pal Toor, Chairperson, Dr. SSBUICET proposed a vote of thanks and highlighted the philosophy of Yoga is being imbibed at Panjab University and the youngsters have developed favourable inclination towards Yoga as a means of holistic development.

Prof. Monica Aggarwal, University Institute of Applied and Management Sciences moderated the session and initiated the questions from the audience and concluded the session. The webinar was enthusiastically attended by a faculty, students, alumni members as well as leading health and wellness experts.

PU VC Interacts with Associate Professors

Prof Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University held an online interaction today with Associate Professors of PU. At the outset, he encouraged all by citing examples of success from his own experiences like facilitating the young person who wanted to start a start-up with the idea of generating power from discharged battery cells who later become  an employer of approx. 200 employees and getting soil samples tested for approx. 200 farmers. Appreciating the stature of Panjab University ,he urged all to work collectively towards achieving top rating of NAAC and sought cooperation of all in this endeavour by updating databases, informing achievements, keeping documentary evidence for evaluation etc. 

PU VC also advised faculty members to work towards interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary research, write new projects, new start-ups, start a PhD in a completely new research area, think on innovative ideas and get patents. He also motivated faculty members to send PhD panels for their research scholars across the Nation or few International examiners rather than limiting it to 3-4 nearby States. 

PU VC urged all to create a bond with their students and  strengthen decision making for the smooth working of the system . The suggestions were taken from the  senior officials and the faculty members present in the meeting. 

Prof Ashish Jain, Director IQAC informed that NAAC visit is due in July next year and we should be ready for getting the highest rating of the NAAC. He requested that all faculty members should report their achievements, lectures delivered, public lectures, projects, patents etc. to their respective departmental IQAC cells for updating the same on the IRB portal. He requested sharing of all information which can help in getting  PU a better NAAC score. 

Prof. Anuradha Sharma-Associate Director, IQAC requested to report all the non-academic activities, if happened, between Mentee-Mentor institutes as well as to inform all the programs organised or attended under IIC.

Prof Anupama Sharma- Dean Panjab University Alumni Association shared the information regarding the activities initiated under PUAA like awarding small research projects or providing seed money to initiate the project. She also informed that they are planning to honour faculty members for their outstanding achievements in the field of research & innovations. 

Prof. Anju Suri, Dean International Students informed about the activities taken up by their cell like conducting webinars, short term courses. She also informed that faculty members can send their proposal for conducting Short Term Courses, Exchange Programs etc.

 Prof. G. R. Chaudhary, Director-CIL informed that their Lab is continuously testing samples received by their lab and helping the researchers in this tough time. More than 70 Associate Professors participated in the meeting and also gave suggestions on various aspects of improvement in the university.

उपकुलपति पंजाब विश्वविधालय, प्रो राज कुमार ने कार्यक्रम का शुभारंभ करते हुए प्रो° अशोक सिंह का वेबिनार ‘महाराणा प्रताप के जीवन पर एक नजर और हल्दीघाटी के युद्ध की सच्चाई’ में स्वागत किया। महाराणा प्रताप के व्यक्तित्व के बारे में बताते प्रो राज कुमार ने बताया की हल्दी घाटी युद्ध की कहानियों से हर व्यक्ति में एक अलग सी ऊर्जा का संचार होता है । त्याग की मूरत महाराणा प्रताप ने सृष्टि मात्र के लिए सबसे महत्वपूर्ण उदहारण पेश की है। वे कष्ट की जिंदगी जीते हुए भी मातृ भूमि की रक्षा करते रहे। आज के विद्यार्थियों को भी महाराणा प्रताप से प्रेरणा लेनी चाहिए, मात्र भूमि से प्रेम करना चाहिए। वाणी को विराम देते हुए उन्होंने प्रो अशोक जी का पुनः स्वागत किया। 

कार्यक्रम को आगे बढ़ाते हुए प्रो एस. के. तोमर जी , डीन छात्र कल्याण पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय ने बताया कि हल्दी घाटी की गाथा और महाराणा प्रताप की जीवनी समाज को भविष्य का रास्ता दिखाता है। महाराणा प्रताप जी ने प्रजा और मातृ भूमि की रक्षा के लिए अपना बलिदान दीया। उनका यह बलिदान आगे आने वाली पीढ़ियां याद रखेगी। किताबो में लिखी बातें पूर्णतः सच नही है, महाराणा प्रताप ने हल्दी घाटी युद्ध जीता है।

महाराणा प्रताप जी के जीवन पर प्रकाश डालते हुए प्रो दिवेंदर जी, सेक्रेटरी कुलपति पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय ने कई कथाकथित बहुत सी बाते बताई और प्रो अशोक का स्वागत भी किया। 

कार्यक्रम के मुख्य वक्ता प्रो अशोक सिंह जी ने विषय पर प्रकाश डालते हुए बताया कि महाराणा प्रताप जी के जीवन के बारे में शोध संकलन के लिए यूनिटाइड नेशन और भारत सरकार ने एक के कार्य शुरू किया जिसने उन्हें काम करने का सौभाग्य प्राप्त हुआ। इतिहास में बताया गया है की मुगलों को धूल खिलाने में महाराणा प्रताप ने कोई कमी नही छोड़ी। हल्दी घाटी का युद्ध उदयपुर के पास राजसमद नमक जगह पर लड़ा गया। अकबर और महाराणा प्रताप के बीच में लड़ा गया युद्ध इतिहास में एक बड़ा हिस्सा रखता है। प्रताप को मेवाड़ का राज सिंहासन बचपन में ही मिल गया थी। भारत के लोगो ने मुगलों की हिंसा को देखते हुए जोहर शुरू किया। महाराणा ने अपने शासन को मजबूत किया और सम्पूर्ण मेवाड़ पर जीत प्राप्त की।

महाराणा ने कभी भी अधीनता स्वीकार न की। मान सिंह ने अकबर की सेना छोड़ कर प्रताप का साथ दिया।

 मानसिंह ने मित्रता को बढ़ने के लिए प्रताप को एक ही थाली में खाना खाने का आग्रह किया पर महाराणा ने इंकार कर बोला कि अपने अपने घर की बेटी किसी ओर के घर ब्याही है राजपूतों को यह बात शोभा नही देती इसलिए हम मित्र नही हो सकते।

Online Book launch event at PU

Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA) organised an event to launch a book named “Kavita to kahi nahi” written by Prof. Archana Singh, Professor, School of Communication Studies on June 18, 2021. This event was in continuation with the events organized by PUAA to celebrate the success and accomplishments of illustrious alumni of Panjab University.

 Prof. VR Sinha, Dean University Instruction presided over the event. He described the majesty of Hindi literature and said that literary persons are different from other persons. Poetry is the most versatile form of literary works and writing poetry is the strongest form of art. He gave numerous examples of popular poets like Kabir Das, Mahadevi Verma, Sumitranandan Pant, Suryakant Tripathi ‘Nirala’ and celebrated novelists like Munshi Prem Chand who had uncanny ability to potray Indian ethos and human behaviour. He admired Prof. Archana for her maiden venture and said that she is a possessor of unusual sensitivity and insight. She is able to express things in a attractive way with an astounding capacity.Prof Archana as a poet, idealizes reality and represents the things, rouses our admiration and feeling of nostalgia as we can empathise with most of her expressions. Prof. Sinha congratulated Prof. Archana and unveiled the book.

Special guests of the evening RJ Mehak, Dr. Anu Dua Sehgal, Ms. Soumya Joshi and Ms. Renuka Salwan, Director Public Relations, PU recited selected verses from the book.

Prof. Anupama Sharma, Dean, Alumni Relations welcomed the Chief Guest, special guests and alumni of PU, senior faculty members from Panjab University and participants. Speaking about the book, Prof. Sharma highlighted that the book is a beautiful compilation of poems and is true reflection of multifarious personality of Prof. Archana. It not only give the participants a window into the heart of the poet, but they also compel us to explore our own inner worlds and longings. Rave reviews by learned persons bear testimony to high literary content. 

Prof. Archana recited some verses of her book and said that compilation of this book was not easy but lockdown gave her time to assemble it. The poems were written over a span of few decades which were compiled in form of this book. She exquisitely described the logic for the title of the book “Kavita to kahi nahi”. She said that she has poured forth her life experiences in the form of poetry over the years. The collection contains 58 poems of varying lengths put together under 6 chapter headings. Each chapter caters to one type of mood such as Life, Family, Politics, Mother tongue and Womanhood.

Ms. Renuka Salwan recited a poem “Betiyan” from the book and specified that she can well relate to the poem beautifully penned down by Prof. Archana as she is herself mother of two daugheres who are staying away from her now. Dr. Anu Dua Sehgal, Ms. Soumya Joshi and RJ Mehak also to recited poems of their choice from Prof. Archana’s book, specifically choosing the theme which is close to their hearts.

Earlier, highlighting the importance of book reading, Dr. Monika Aggarwal, UIAMS introduced the theme of the event to all the participants. She also read the reviews of book by Bollywood actor Ayushman Khurana and Jyoti Kapoor on the book and invited Prof. Archana Singh to highlight about the book and her journey from academician to a poet. 

The audience found the session engrossing, splendid, and enthralling. At the last, Prof. Monika Aggarwal presented the vote of thanks and concluded the meeting.

More than 200 attended a Webinar on “Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Business” organized by UIAMS

A Webinar on “Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Business” was hosted by UIAMS department in collaboration with UBS, Chandigarh, UBS-Ludhiana and UIHTM management departments of Panjab University.

Dr. Naveen  kumar  in his opening remarks talked that World is facing enormous challenges including ecological challenges, such as climate disruption caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions, and societal challenges like Increasing Population and various forms of social injustice like social inequality etc. Businesses are resorting to these challenges in several ways from managing through the decline by adapting to limitations to more proactive, positive responses, including ones that champion business as a force for positive societal change. Sustainable businesses by way of addressing ecological and social concerns can foster numerous business opportunities that will benefit both the economy and society. Concept of 3Ps (Profit, People and Planet) has become all times more important in present scenario, and corporate house needs to embrace this concept holistically. Entrepreneurship and innovation are fundamental for the success of start-up companies that are providing innovative solutions to meet environmental or social challenges. Lastly he apprised that Companies undertake sustainable entrepreneurship for a variety of reasons ranging from profitability to enhancing brand reputation.

Prof.Meenakshi Malhotra, former DUI and CVO and guest of honour of event , in her address said that  the Entrepreneurship is the most relevant topic in today’s times when everything is falling apart. She talked about the major environmental and social concerns that world is grappling with. Prof. Malhotra stressed that Entrepreneurs are innovators who can help in the holistic transformation and reform patterns in a meticulous manner. They can lead to influx of new products or services through plethora of models concomitantly bolstering the experience of large stakeholders. She made faculty realized that we have to train and develop competency, resilience, persistence and infuse these qualities into the minds of young people. Teachers are the ones who can aid in etching these in the minds of young people consequently leaving an indelible mark invariably in their minds. This is the way India would progress; we have to be job creators and not just job seekers. We have to inculcate unflinching spirit and unwavering attitude of entrepreneurship in these young people intertwined with how innovation can transform and create sustainable business. Prof. Malhotra emphasised the immense role of entrepreneurship and innovation in success of sustainable entrepreneurship. Lastly, she gave insight of the great entrepreneurs like Azim Premji, and motivated the students to take a lead in the direction of entrepreneurship as a career.

Sh. Harjinder Singh Cheema , MD Cheema Boilers, was keynote speaker of the event. He talked about several important factors that are required to progress in life. He made audience to recognize and appreciate that human beings are the luckiest creatures on this earth if we decide, we can reach moon also owing to the capabilities and perseverance we have. He shared his important formula of life that we do not need to stay far ahead from others in life but milliseconds ahead than other person. Then he furthered his discussion about what entrepreneurship is and how we require having all four qualities of Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra.

Mr. Cheema enlightened the participants about the concept of 5 Cs i.e. Confidence, Courage, Commitment, Consistency and Communication related to innovation. He asked the audience not to be just a follower in life rather try to be a leader. In India, where 60% of population is below 35 years we should try to be job creators and not just job seekers and that requires power and positive attitude in life and that is within everyone we all just need to identify it. He has shared his own personal insights like how he showed confidence in front of his Ship Captain, how he has shown courage to quit his job, how he showed commitment when his father said not to come home without a job, how he joined Thermax and continued there for 12 years and then started his own company by bringing together all his brothers and started this company whose revenue increased from 2 crore to 200 crore in a span of just 7 years. His discussion unfolded about how at different phases of life people around him motivated him and helped him see things differently. At the same time, he also talked about the importance of innovation. How he always continued on the path of innovation. He substantiated his claim by letting audience know that first time in the world, he along with his team has invented a technology for burning Distillery waste after concentrating it into a boiler, how they converted sugar mills to power plant during non-sugar season, how they are producing ethanol from rice straw to solve problem of straw burning and there latest innovation of making hi-tech crematoria to check air pollution and at the end, he apprised that to be an entrepreneur you have to be constantly search for innovations.

Dr. Naveen Kumar handled the questions and queries from participants. Webinar on “Covid-19 and Comorbidities” at PU

The Centre for Medical Physics, Panjab University and Deptt. of Biotechnology, GGDSD College has organized the webinar on “Covid-19 and Comorbidities” by distinguished speaker Prof. Sanjay K. Badada, Deptt. of Endocrinology, PGIMER. This talk is being organized under the aegis of Indian Science Congress Association (Chandigarh Chapter) and Chandigarh Forum for Science and Technology Communication.

Prof. Badada explained how patients with obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, cancer, COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at risk of mortality of COVID-19. He has also described the latest research studies done by his group. Comorbidities lead to severe outcomes and increased morality in COVID-19. Patients with underlying Comorbidities must be extra-vigilant amid the pandemic. They should strictly adhere to COVID-19 appropriate behaviour.

Prof. Badada answered all the  questions of the students. Prof. R.C. Sobti, Former Vice Chancellor, Panjab University and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow and Prof. V.P Kamboj, Former Director, CDRI, Lucknow  Co-Chaired the session.

Online Lecture by Art History, PU

The Department of Art History and Visual Arts, Panjab University organised a special online lecture by the art historian Professor R H Kulkarni from Karnataka Chitrakala Parishatha, Bengaluru. The talk was entitled “Mural Traditions of Karnataka: Vijayanagara and After”.  The scholar spoke of the patronage of architecture, sculpture and painting in the Vijayanagara empire and highlighted how sculptural forms and pictorial renderings show a conjunction. He also highlighted how literature was a great influence on the themes of the mural paintings and that Vijayanagara period paintings with their new mode of depiction serve as precursors to the succeeding period in Karnataka. The learned lecture was attended by faculty and students from the university and colleges.

Collaborations To Be Done with a focus on Commercial Deliverables- Raj Kumar

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh addressed  around 100 Assistant Professors of the University today in a virtual meeting. He stressed that the faculty  are the pillars of the University who can play a great role in the enhancement of the perception of PU . PU VC urged all to join hands in taking a leap in next three years for the University.

In his address, he said that the need of the hour for the  University is to bring in a professional attitude by changing the mindset and involving more corporate’s perspective into teaching . He further stressed to  create a niche for PU not only on national level but also on international level. He urged on giving research orientation to students right from the beginning of their career. It is important for the faculty to tap the potential of the students. He also urged them to take multi-disciplinary projects and focus on patents and citations. He informed that a nodal officer has been appointed by PU for filing of patents. They were also asked to explore collaborations with a focus on commercial deliverables. He brought the point of contributing in social initiatives for the society in order to provide holistic development to the students. PU VC asked them to focus on getting their research published in High Impact Journals.

Various suggestions were taken from Dean International Students, Dean Alumni Relations, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Director, CIL/SAIF, Director, Computer Centre and other Assistant Professors present, for enhancing the visibility of PU in the coming times. First meeting of Interdisciplinary Task Force Held

The first meeting of the newly constituted Interdisciplinary Task Force was held today under the Chairmanship of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. While addressing, PU VC strongly expressed that the thrust areas in the interest of PU be listed out with the interest of society, global perspective and government priority in mind. He informed that he will be integrating all the lab facilities available in PU and urged all to focus on industry oriented research, patents and citations. He further added that the task force  has been constituted  mainly to enhance the global image of PU and to increase outputs for research/teaching for enhancing PU rankings. 

 He urged for enhanced interdepartmental communication to fill the gaps for the research going on in various labs of PU. The need of the hour is to collaborate and work out modalities where Centre for Industry Institute Partnership Programme (CIIPP),Management and Industrial links come to the help of departments.

During discussions, it was also felt that the industry be involved in the Board of Studies and Board of Controls for making of the syllabi and teaching to prioritize the research areas which will enable students to be industry ready.

It was strongly felt that more and more scientists should be encouraged for patenting their research work. For this, PU VC informed that a nodal officer has been appointed for encouraging the writing for getting the patents. For this, hiring a professional patent agent  was also suggested apart from exploring options of  Govt agencies who give free services for filing the patents.

There was a suggestion that under the Corporate Social Responsibility programme, the industry be tapped for funding the research projects. For this, CIIPP and Management can help the departments.

PU VC urged for more and more collaborations with the industry for the visibility of PU. It was  to have interdisciplinary research on environment, health,disaster management, public health and public policy. The industrial feedback will be taken for good research work . There was also a suggestion to have a Science & Technology hub on PU website with thrust areas mentioned therein under which, the links for the faculty to be provided for better coordination.

Prof. Prince Sharma, Microbiology coordinated the meeting. Webinar on Gender Manthan at Social Work, PU

Centre for Social Work and Department of Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology, Panjab University organized a webinar under the Series titled “Gender Manthan” today.

The idea behind Gender Manthan is  to sensitize students about Gender related issues. The distinguished speaker of the webinar was Professor Chander Shekhar from the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, under the Ministry of Health and Family welfare, Government of India.

Professor Chander Shekhar spoke on “ Declining Fertility Desire and Changing Sex Preference for Children in Punjab: Demographic and Gender Role Implications”.

The welcome address was delivered by Professor Paru Bal Sidhu, Chairperson, Department of Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology, Panjab University.
