DGHS, GoI releases Pictorial Booklet on COVID-19 Prevention for Schools

Chandigarh November 1, 2021

Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Kumar, Director General of Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, released a pictorial booklet ‘COVID-19 Prevention Guidebook for Schools’ to restrict the spread of COVID-19.  The pictorial booklet is written and designed by Dr. Suman Mor from Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh.

During the release event, Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Kumar, Director General of Health Services, highlighted that school plays a vital role in nation-building. During the initial days of COVID-19, very little was known about this disease and coupled with concern around the security of children, schools remained closed in the country. He added that schools are reopening due to a sharp decline in COVID-19 cases, availability of vaccines, and realizing that continued school closure could have a significant adverse impact on children’s education. He stressed that it is crucial to ensure the safety of children’s and all others associated with providing this necessary service of quality education. Prof. Kumar mentioned pictorial booklet ‘COVID-19 Prevention Guidebook for Schools’ by thePost Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh and Panjab University, Chandigarh, will be a valuable tool for the effective implementation of the COVID-19 mitigation strategies by active engagement of school’s authorities, parents, teachers and students.

The event was also graced by Dr. Kaushalya, Director, Central Health Education Bureau, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. She mentioned that underprivileged students were deprived of online education because it heavily relied on family support and resources available at home and school. Hence, the reopening of physical classes will ensure equitable opportunities for all students.

Dr. Suman Mor, Chairperson and Associate Professor, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, mentioned that parents are worried about the safety of children. Hence, we have developed this guidebook to ensure their safety, including and all others engaged in education.

Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Additional Professor, Department of Community Medicine & School of Public Health, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh, highlighted that this booklet provides essential information about COVID-19, its mode of transmission, symptoms including the step by step measures which could be taken by the students, parents, teachers and school authorities to ensure the safety of all.

The authors mentioned that an expert panel including Dr. Kanwar Sen, Dr Sushma Dureja, Dr. AK Yadav, Dr. Giridhar Babu, Dr. Anuj Sharma, Dr mala Chhabra, Dr. Rathi Balachandran, Dr. GS Chhatwal and Dr. Amarjeet Singh, provided valuable feedback to enhance the impact of the pictorial booklet. Further, Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, PU and Prof. Jagat Ram, Ex-Director, PGIMER, appreciated the author’s continuous initiatives to create awareness to contact the COVID-19 pandemic.

चंडीगढ़, 28 अक्तूबर (): अल्केमिस्ट तथा ओजस अस्पताल पंचकूला के डाक्टरों की टीम ने विश्व स्ट्रोक दिवस के अवसर पर ब्रेन स्ट्रोक (दिमागी दौरे) तथा जीवन शैली संबंधी जागरूकता पैदा करने के लिए मीडिया को संबोधित किया। इस अवसर पर न्यूरोलॉजी के कंस्लटेंट डा. गौरव जैन, इंटरवेंशनल रेडियोलॉजी के सीनियर कंस्लटेंट डा. अमनदीप सिंह, न्यूरो सर्जरी के कंस्लटेंट डा. मुनीष बुद्धिराजा, न्यूरोलॉजी के कंस्लटेंट डा. राहुल महाजन तथा न्यूरो सर्जरी कंस्लटेंट डा. प्रशांत मसकारा मौजूद थे।


डा. गौरव जैन ने पत्रकारों को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि भारत स्ट्रोक एक नई महामारी के रूप में उभर रहा है, क्योंकि देश भर में हर वर्ष 15 से 20 लाख लोग इस बीमारी से पीडि़त होते हैं। असल गिनती इससे कहीं अधिक है, क्योंकि अधिकांश मरीज अस्पतालों या क्लीनिकों तक पहुंचते ही नहीं। उन्होंने बताया कि भारत में स्ट्रोक के रोजाना 3000-4000 केस सामने आते हैं, जिनमें से मुश्किल से 2-3 प्रतिशत का इलाज होता है। पूरे विश्व में एक लाख की आबादी के पीछे हर वर्ष 60-100 केस सामने आते हैं, जबकि भारत में एक लाख की आबादी के पीछे 140-145 केस सामने आते हैं। भारत में स्ट्रोक के मामलों के बढऩे का कारण जागरूकता की कमी है। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि देश में हर वर्ष जितनी मौतें स्ट्रोक से होती हैं, इतनी एडज, तपदिक व मलेरिया से भी नहीं होती।

डा. गौरव ने यह भी बताया कि पूरी दुनिया में 60 प्रतिशत स्ट्रोक के मरीज सिर्फ भारत में है। बीते 4-5 दशकों दौरान इन केसों में 100 प्रतिशत इजाफा हुआ है।


डा. राहुल महाजन ने इस अवसर पर बोलते हुए कहा कि दिमाग का दौरा उस समय पड़ता है, जब दिमाग की किसी नाड़ी में खून का थक्का (कलॉट) आने या नाड़ी फटने के कारण दिमाग को रक्त की सप्लाई कम हो जाती है। उन्होंने बताया कि 87 प्रतिशत केस नाड़ी में कलॉट आने पर होते हैं, जिनका इलाज किया जा सकता है। उन्होंने बताया कि स्ट्रोक के मामले में समय की बहुत ज्यादा अहमियत है। उन्होंने बताया कि दौरा पडऩे के बाद हर मिनट में दिमाग के 19 लाख सैल नकारा हो जाते हैं, इसलिए मरीज को तुरंत निकटवर्ती अस्पताल ले जाना चाहिए। उन्होंने बताया कि 5 प्रतिशत स्ट्रोक डायबिटिज (शुगर), उच्च रक्तचाप तथा अधिक कैलेस्ट्रोल के कारण होते हैं।

डा. कर्नल अमनदीप सिंह ने पत्रकारों के साथ बातचीत करते हुए कहा कि खून के थक्के (कलॉट) के कारण पड़े दौरे का एक टीका लगाकर उस समय इलाज किया जा सकता है। यह दवाई कलॉट को खत्म कर देती है। यह तभी संभव है, जो कलॉट छोटा हो तथा मरीज को दौरा पडऩे पर साढ़े चार घंटों के अंदर-अंदर माहिर डाक्टरों के पास ले जाया जाए। उन्होंने बताया कि अब नई तकनीक मैकेनिकल थ्रोम्बैक्टॉमी आने से 24 घंटे के अंदर मरीज का इलाज किया जा सकता है। यह नई आधुनिक तकनीक अल्कैमिस्ट तथा ओजस अस्पताल पंचकूला में उपलब्ध है। इस तकनीक द्वारा बिना चीरफाड़ किए सफल इलाज संभव है। उन्होंने बताया कि मरीज को अस्पताल पहुंचाना ही अहम नहीं, बल्कि अस्पताल भी ‘स्ट्रोक रेडी अस्पताल’ होना चाहिए।

डा. मनीष बुद्धिराजा ने कहा कि भारत संक्रमण व बिना संक्रमण वाली बीमारियों के दोहरे बोझ का सामना कर रहा है। उन्होंने बताया कि भारत में हर वर्ष ब्रेन स्ट्रोक के 15-20 लाख मरीज अस्पतालों में आते हैं तथा यह अचानक मौत तथा अधरंग का सबसे बड़ा कारण है। मुंह में से लार बहना या किसी अंग हाथ-पैर में कमजोरी महसूस होना या सुन्न हो जाना स्ट्रोक के मुख्य लक्ष्ण है। डा. प्रशांत मसकारा ने कहा कि भारत जैसे देश में मुश्किल से 3 प्रतिशत मरीजों को ही थ्रोम्बैक्टॉमी विधि से इलाज मिलता है।

Vigilance Awareness Week celebrations at CEDS, PU

Vigilance Awareness Week celebrations were organized by the Department of Community Education and Disability Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh from October 26th – 29th,  2021. Different events were organized starting with” Integrity Pledge” on 26th October, 2021;  A signature campaign on 27th October, 2021; A Virtual Quiz Competition on 28th October, 2021 and culminated with a Webinar on 29th October, 2021.  The Webinar was organized on the theme “ How to get Unique Disability Identification(UDID) Card for person with disability”. 

            The Resource Person was Dr. H.P.S. Kang, Professor in the Department of University Centre for Instrumentation and Micro-electronics, Panjab University, Chandigarh.  He highlighted the importance of the UDID Card and gave hands on training on the process of making the UDID card.  This generated lot of interest among the participants. Around 100 participants attended the Webinar. This Webinar was organized under the patronage of our honorable Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar.  He has always been a source of great inspiration and motivation.  This Webinar was organized in collaboration with Equal Opportunity Cell-Persons with Disability, Panjab University, Chandigarh and SAKSHAM Chandigarh.

3 Day 41st INCA International Conference commences at PU

            3 Day International Conference by Indian National Cartographic Association (INCA) commences today on the theme Cartography for Self Relient India which is being hosted by Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

            The Chief Guest, Hon’ble Governor of Haryana, Shri Bandaru Dattatraya in his address said that the geo-spatial field has tremendous potential for generating employment in the country. He also mentioned that in the management of COVID-19 pandemic crisis, COVID maps proved beneficial. He further added that application of Geographic Information Sciences(GIS) has become a crucial part of how NASA gets to know the feature of other worlds, develops broader understanding of Geophysics and gathers valuable information about our own planet. He added that India will have a coherent national location data framework by 2030 which will assist the country to move towards E-Economics, E-Service and E-Commerce and will help improve services to the citizens. He highlighted the SVAMITVA , flagship scheme of Centre is reformative step towards establishing clear ownership of property in rural inhabited areas by mapping of land parcels using drone technology.

            Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU, while referring the conference to be prestigious platform, emphasised on the need to come up with an action plan to make cartography multi-disciplinary so that its knowledge can be shared with other domains.

            The Surveyor General of India, Mr. Naveen Tomar, in his keynote address,  focussed on the requirement of data collection on a large scale to make India a self-reliant nation. Also, he stressed upon the need of fresh blood to be injected into the system and also talked about public-private partnership in this regard.

            The Guest of Honour, Vice Admiral Adhir Arora, Chief Hydrographer, Govt. of India stressed on the sphere of marine cartography and spoke on the complexities of ocean mapping particularly in terms of huge funding and man power being needed for this task.

            Prof. Krishna Mohan, President of INCA, introduced the theme of the Conference, which he said aligned with the vison of The Government of India of “Reform, Perform and Transform”. It was followed by an inaugural address by Director of National Institute of Advanced Study, Bengaluru and Former Secretary, MoES, India, Dr. Shailesh Nayak. He emphasised on Maps to be a mainstay in the transformation of process of India under the vision of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.

Online Workshop at HRDC, PU

A 3-days online workshop began in the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh on “Competency Development in Critical Thinking” for research scholars who are registered for their Ph.D. programme.

PU Scientists of Single-year impact(2020) in Stanford University Report

As many as 32 faculty scientists from various disciplines from Panjab University are included in the elite list of world top 2% scientists as per the Stanford University, Stanford, California, USA which is based upon a Single-year impact (year 2020). All the 17 scientists from the first list have made it to the second list also.

Data include all scientists who are among the top 100,000 across all fields according to the composite citation index. Composite citation index was calculated with a validated formula and machine learning approach was used to extract the data from Scopus programmed with a specific set of rules like citations, h-index, authorship status etc.On the basis of citations and papers, the scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields. Selection of the scientists in the list is based on the c-score criteria or a percentile rank of 2% or above, based upon the various publication metrics, including, Scopus H-index, co-authorship adjusted HM-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator.

17 Scientists from PU among World Top 2% Scientists

 As many as 17 faculty scientists from various disciplines from Panjab University out of 2042 Indian Scientists are included in that elite list of world top 2% scientists as per the Stanford University, Stanford, California, USA  which provided an updated analysis that uses citations from Scopus with data freeze as of  Dec 31, 2020, assessing scientists for citation impact during the calendar year 2020 that was published on October 19, 2021 in PLOS Biology, a peer reviewed high impact international journal available at https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/3. . There was great interest in the databases of standardized citation metrics across all scientists and scientific disciplines, and many scientists urged the authors to provide updates of the databases.

Research Scholars and non-teaching staff also play key roles in attaining various research and academic goals.

Two lists have been created for the top 2% scientists. The first list which is based upon the Career-long data contains PU’s 17 scientists. Six out of these scientists belong to University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), three each are from Departments of Chemistry and Physics, while one each is from departments of Anthropology, Botany, Environmental Studies, Mathematics and UICET.

The second list which is based upon a Single-year impact (year 2020) has 30 scientists from PU. Almost all the scientists from the first list have made it to the second list also.

Police Commemoration Day at PU

 Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized ‘Shaheedon Ko Naman’ to mark the Police Commemoration Day today with Prof. Anju Suri, Dean International Students, as guest of honor.

            Prof. Suri lauded the role of police in maintaining peace and order in the society. According to her the members of the society specially the youth should be thankful to them and draw inspiration from the dedication and devotion shown by the police towards their duty. Later, she led faculty, students, and staff of the centre in paying homage to police martyrs by offering flowers.

            Prof. Anil Monga, Chairperson, Centre for Police Administration while welcoming the guests traced the history of Police Commemoration Day and said that on 21st October, 1959, a patrol party of CRPF was ambushed by the Chinese Army in Hot Springs, Ladakh, in which 10 police personnel were martyred. Since then this day is commemorated to pay homage to the police martyrs. He highlighted that the purpose is to create awareness and sensitize the students towards the sacrifices being made by the Police force.

            A documentary film “Wall of Valour” A Tribute to Martyrs was screened on the occasion. The Producer/Director of the documentary film Ms. Beenu Rajput while interacting with the students shared her experiences of making this film. She said that meeting with the families of police martyrs were a life time experience and their sacrifices are invaluable. She made an appeal that people should come forward and provide help to the families and children’s of the police martyrs.

            The event was attended by faculty, research scholars and students of Centre for Police Administration. Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Assistant Professor, Centre for Police Administration proposed vote of thanks to everyone present on the occasion.

Mayor inaugurates toilet block at sector 22

Chandigarh, October 20:- Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh today inaugurated renovated toilet block at Sector 22-D in the presence of prominent persons of the area.

While speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that this toilet block has been renovated under the area based development of sectors by the Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. He said that there is provision of Separate toilet for differently able person and transgender. The sanitary napkin machine along with incinerator has been provided in the ladies toilet for their convenience.
