PU NSS UNIT & PU Hostels HOLD “CLEANLINESS DRIVE”

A drive for cleanliness was organised by NSS,Panjab University in collaboration with Girls Hostel No. 1 and 2, International Hostel, Boys Hostel-1 & 2 as a part of celebration of the diamond jubilee i.e 75 years of independence. The event was organised by  Dr. Simran Preet, PO, NSS, Dr. Vivek Kumar, PO, NSS and Dr. Smita Sharma (Warden, GH-1) and Dr. Harjit Kaur (Warden, GH. -2). Dr. Nidhi from UICET also participated in the event. A large footfall of NSS volunteers and non-teaching staff was observed. The purpose of the drive was to dispose off biodegradable and non-biodegradable objects littering around in the vicinity of the hostels to avoid the siring/generation/foundation of  breeding beds for mosquitos. This activity has created awareness among NSS participants about the importance of waste segregation and  make students socially responsible and be more proactive in tackling environmental concerns. NSS team and hostel wardens motivated the participants to protect the environment from the plastic waste and to make these kinds of cleanliness activities a routine to keep their surroundings clean and green. The activity also encouraged students to be comfortable in cleaning public places as well. It was an inspiring event for all as everybody from teaching staff to non-teaching staff to students actively and enthusiastically participated in the drive making it a huge success.

Iconic Week Celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav concludes at Panjab University

NSS, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with UIET  organized a Cycle Rally to conclude the Iconic Week Celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. He purpose of the cycle rally was to stay healthy, stay happy shared Shankar Sehgal, NSS Programme Officer.  The cycle rally was attended by 40 participants alongwith Naveen Kumar,  Vivek Kumar, Lokesh Kumar, and Atul Kumar, Faculty members. Naveen Kumar, Programme Officer while delivering vote of thanks appreciated the efforts of  Rakesh Mohindra, Assistant Librarian, UBS  in smooth conduct of the event.

Providing deep insights to the NSS volunteers on the theme of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, Dr. Bharat quoted various verses from Upanishads, Vedas, Smritis and also related examples from the Mahabharata. Further, he underlined on the need of integrity, honesty, patience, confidence, discipline and dedication in life by the youth to sustain a bright future of our society in particular and humankind in general.

The meet was attended by more than 100 alumni who shared their experiences and cherished memories of the Department of Laws. Our alumni have established themselves as successful individuals in different fields of their lives. The alumnus pitched for an offline meet in future. This event was a success due to the coordination of Prof. Dr. Supinder Kaur who made it possible at the eleventh hour.

ENACTUS TEAM OF PANJAB UNIVERSITY ORGANIZES “NUTRITION & HEALTH” WORKSHOP FOR POTTERS OF MALOYA

Nutrients are the building blocks of our body allowing us to grow, repair, protect against pathogens and create energy and they must be obtained from diet, since the human body does not synthesize them in large amounts enough for human health. Good health is like the morning sun, mellow and pleasing but the underprivileged communities often lack the knowledge about its paramount importance. At this time of pandemic when health care is a necessity, Enactus team conducted a workshop on Nutrition & Health at Maloya for potter community working under project “Dhra, conveyed Prof. Seema Kapoor, Faculty Advisor of the Enactus team.

Dr. Ekta Bajaj, dietitian, Panjab University delivered an expert talk on the importance of eating a balanced and nutrient-rich diet to more than 100 community members present during the workshop. Dr. Bajaj raised awareness on the dynamic interdependency of health and nutrition at various stages of life and emphasized the management of nutritional disorders. She engaged the workshop in a very simple and organized way. Dr. Bajaj told the importance of few affordable and low-cost food items viz. vegetables like loci, carrots, leafy greens including spinach, fenugreek; fruits like bananas, grapes; whole grains; lentils, soyabeen, etc. to the potter community.

The potter community appreciated the efforts put in by Enactus team from time to time since last 2 years and helping in their upliftment by bagging orders from many food outlets of tricity for earthen products like handis, cups, glasses, plates, etc. They conveyed that they are very thankful to the team for helping them even during COVID-19 pandemic by distributing face masks, face shields and also bagging regular orders from the food joints.

Akshit Kalra, President of ENACTUS team along with Meesha and Sonali, Vice Presidents, Project Head Amanpreet, Chetan and Nandini, Finance Head, Yash Tripathi and Content Head, Dea gave prominence to the essentiality of instructing people about the paramount significance of health. Capacity Building Program for Security Guards of Panjab University

A five days Capacity Building Program for Security Guards of Panjab University was concluded in the seminar hall of Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University on 12th March 2022. The program was organized by Centre for Police Administration in collaboration with Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC), Panjab University, Chandigarh. Sh. K.B. Singh, IG (Retd.) Punjab Police and Former ADC of Governor Punjab Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Prof. Anil Monga, Chairperson, Centre for Police Administration and Coordinator of the program, read the report of the program and shared with the guests and participants that during these five days, the sessions on techniques of public dealing, role and responsibilities of security guards, first aid, traffic management, dharna/strike/crowd management, fire management, usage of communication instruments, patrolling and surveillance, yoga and meditation, etiquettes, healthy lifestyle and drill were conducted by inviting experts from Haryana Police, Chandigarh Police, Max Hospital, Mohali, Chandigarh Fire Brigade and distinguished faculty from Panjab University. Dr. Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, HRDC and fellow, Panjab University and Prof. Promila Pathak, Professor and Chairperson, Department of Botany and Chairperson, PU Security Committee were the Guest of Honors on the occasion. The capacity building program was attended by 40 security guards of Panjab University and concluded by distribution of certificates to all the participants by the Chief Guest. Mr. Vikram Singh, Chief Security Officer, Panjab University proposed the vote of thanks.

PUAA and UICET Celebrate Azadi Ka Mahotsav

Panjab University has been enthusiastically participating in the initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture, and achievements. Panjab University Alumni Association in association with Dr.SSBUICET, Panjab University, Chandigarh as a part of the celebrations  organised a variety of competitions, including presentations, monologues, and vlogs on March 11, 2022. Over 100 students participated in the event which is part of the  Chandigarh administration’s iconic week of the grand celebrations from March 6 to March 13, 2022. PU has been organising various social and cultural programs along with demonstrations of technical and scientific achievements. PU is aiming to make it a ‘Jan-Utsav’ in the spirit of ‘Jan-Bhagidari’ wherein various stakeholders including alumni, faculty, staff, and students are enthusiastically participating.

Dean Alumni Relations, PU Prof Anupama Sharmain her welcome address highlighted the objective of the event and stressed upon the five pillars of the celebrations:  Freedom Struggle, Ideas at 75, Achievements at 75, Actions at 75 and Resolves at 75. Amrit” means elixir, ambrosia, or nectar while “utsav” means celebrations, festival or jubilee and in more literal sense is elevation, rising, height, enterprise, undertaking, beginning, or blossoming.

Prof. Amrit Pal Toor, Chairperson, Dr. SSBUICET welcomed the students in the event and wished them good luck. She highlighted that this is the fist offline event after COVID 19 Pandemic and the institute is really happy to welcome their students back to their campus. 

The judges for the presentation round were Prof. Monical Munjial (Ex-Chairperson, Centre for Social Welfare, P.U.) and Prof. Ritu Gupta. Teams competed against each other in the competition and presented their views on the pillars of Atam Nirbhar Bharat and the historical importance of self-reliance. Kuldeep Kumar, Rachna Chaudhary and Manider kaur emerged victorious in the presentation competition.

Dr Twinkle Bedi judged the monologue competition on the theme “Atam Nirbhar Bharat”. This was an intense competition filled with dramatics, recitations, and speeches. The winners of the monologue competition were Pappu Kumar and Shivani.

Prof. Sonia Sharma and Prof. Harjit Kaur were the judges for vlogs. Having shown an incredible video of Dr. SSBUICET, Sahil Kamboj, Ravnoor kaur, and Aman singh emerged as the winners for the vlog contest.

National Professional Standards for Teachers: open house discussion on draft.

An open house discussion on National Professional standards for Teachers (NPST), NEP-2020 was organized by Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with NCTE, New Delhi on 10th March 2022 in hybrid mode at the SAIF/ CIL conference hall of PU.

Mr. S.S. Gill, IAS, Secretary Education, UT-Chandigarh, the guest of honour, Prof. Raj kumar, vice-chancellor, Panjab University, Ms. Kesang Sherpa, member secretary, NCTE, graced the inaugural session. Prof. J. N. Baliya, head, DoE, Central University, Jammu had graced the programme.

The programme was started with the university Anthem followed by lightening of lamp by dignitaries and coordinators of the programme. Prof. Kirandeep Singh read out brief profile of the Department and informed the guests about the achievements and contributions of the department in the field of education.

Ms. Kesang Sherpa (IRS) Member Secretary, NCTE joined the discussion through online mode. She  briefed about how NPST has been launched initially and its development through different phases. Expert committee was formed and feedback from various stakeholders of education sector was collected to launch the 1st draft of NPST. According to her the final draft will be launched by March 2023.

Mr. Gill the Guest of honour highlighted the role of teachers in 21st century. He emphasized on E2 formula which implies the two important bases of growth of society, Education and Entrepreneurship. He said education sector has to respond to the changing needs of society and must undergo transformation to be more relevant.

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor appreciated NCTE decision for collaboration  with Panjab University for taking inputs for further improvement and changes in NPST. He highlighted that teachers need to blend their conventional knowledge and skills with new trends in education at a fast pace to catch up wherever they have been lagging.

Prof. J N Baliya, Head, Deptt. Of Educational Studies, Central University, jammu introduced the bluebook on NPST through online power point presentation. He briefly talked about the three chapters of NPST. He also emphasized on 3Ps, Teacher Preparation, Practice and Performance.

 Mr. Rishab Khanna  presented the NSPT draft by taking up each component of the draft in detail with reference to school aducation. He elaborated on core pillars of NSPT which are education and training, support in practice and career progression.

Prof Sharad Sinha  joined online from NCERT to inform and to provoke critical thinking about teaching and training among the participants.

Inputs were given by invited panelists Dr. Hemant Dy Director Higher Education Haryana, Dr Ashwani Bhalla Dy Dir Punjab and Dr. Manpreet Brar Coordinator Smagra Shikha Abhiyan.

After the main speakers  the penalists had a thorough and comprehensive discussion on NPST followed by questions from participants.

The dignitaries and speakers were thanked by offering momentos. Prof Nandita and Prof Latika highlighted suggestions which emerged from the open house discussion and Prof Chaturvedi from NCTE gave concluding remarks.

The programme ended with national anthem and lunch for all the participants.
