World Hypertension Day

To commemorate the World Hypertension Day (WHD) Mehr Chand Mahajan, Boys Hostel no.1, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a free blood pressure checking camp and awareness program on May 17, 2022. Health camp was inaugurated by Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Warden, Boys Hostel No. 1. Prof. Jagtar Singh, DSW(M) graced the occasion. Dr. Manoj Kumar, Ph.D (Public Health) was resource person on this occasion. Screening was done by a team from the Public Health Department, Panjab University which included Dr. Ashwani Kumar Rana, Dr. Gursimran Kaur, Dr. Kunal Singh and Dr. Vidhi.
Around 65 residents, staff members and mess workers within the age bracket of 25-60 years were screened for their blood pressure on this occasion. Around 16 candidates were diagnosed with high blood pressure. They were counselled and guided by the team regarding the healthy eating habits, lifestyle changes, stress and anger management etc. They also recommended details health examination to these candidates.
Orientation regarding gender-based discriminations organised

Department of Sociology, Post Graduate Govt College for Girls sector 42, Chandigarh. The session started with the brief discussion on Gender and sex, she explained that gender which is not male and female but man, woman, and transgender. Gender discrimination is faced by mostly women and transgender’s. This discrimination is because of patriarchy that is prevalent in India from roots and to remove this discrimination not only women have to speak about their right but also men have to change their views. Individual and group activities were performed which made students made to think about various topics (dowry, domestic violence, sayings about men and women, against birth of girl child etc.) which are main factors leading to discrimination. The session was interactive and group activity further refined the learning process of the students. The masters in social work students and research scholars participated in the workshop.
Dr. Gaurav Gaur, Chairperson alongwith Prof. Jyoti Seth answered the queries related to the theme asked by the students. The students asked questions from live-in-relationship, marriage, divorce and cultural practices prevalent in our society. The token of gratitude was presented to the resource person by the faculty and the students. It was very interactive and enlightening session for the students.
Kirron Kher inaugurates automatic block making machine at C&D waste plant

Kirron Kher, Member Parliament, UT, Chandigarh today inaugurated fully automatic block making machine, hydro-vibro compaction type with batch mix plant at the C&D waste plant site, industrial area Phase-I, here today in the presence of Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Sh. Dharam Pal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Chandigarh, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.
Speaking on the occasion Smt. Kher said that having a capacity of approximate 12000-15000 paver block per day, the automatic block making machine will be boon for not only the Municipal Corporation but for the city as well. She said that the demand for the efficient and fast production line of automatic block making machines adds to reducing the per-unit cost of the blocks, offers high quality, less damaged and dimensionally accurate concrete products.
She said that using a block making machine in construction has been increasing over the years but this is not a coincidence as concrete blocks offer multiple advantages economically, in terms of constructive performance, as well as in build quality and versatility.
While sharing information about the plant, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh said that keeping in view ease of citizens, an exclusive system has been set in place for transportation of construction and demolition waste from their door steps the MCC vehicle will lift 250 cubic foot C&D waste for its scientific disposal including loading and unloading @ Rs. 800 per trip upto 5 kilometer distance from the C&D waste plant situated at industrial area Phase-I and Rs. 100 extra per kilometer beyond 5 kilometer from the plant site. She said that people may also transport their C&D waste to the 23 designated C&D waste collection centers located throughout the city.
She said that any type of concrete blocks can be produced with consistent quality by fixing different types of moulds and ram in the automatic machine and designed to deliver unparalleled performance and cost-effective solution. She said that the scope of work for establishment of the automatic machine involves approximately 1.62 crores including maintenance for next 5 years including all the maintenance and wear & tear of all machinery at casting unit of C&D waste processing plant.
The Commissioner said that various concrete products will be produced in this automatic block making machine including big and small size kerbs, channel, paver block 60mm and 80mm and PCC bricks.
Others present during the inauguration were Sh. Dalip Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor, Smt. Vimla Dubey, area councilor, other councilors and officers of MCC.
Panjab University Coffee Table book Released

The book is unique in its effort of capturing the essence of Panjab University campus during the 2020 nationwide lockdown. Prof. Renu Vig (Dean University Instructions, Panjab University) and Prof. Y P Verma (Registrar, Panjab University) also graced the occasion.
Prof. Raj Kumar congratulated the authors and appreciated the exemplary efforts of Dr Gaurav Gaur in capturing the unprecedented visuals clicked through a simple mobile phone camera. He further advised that the book be made as a Panjab University Souvenir that can be presented to delegations at various Panjab University events.
Dr Gaurav Gaur (Chairperson, Centre for Social Work, Panjab University) shared his experience of bringing together the coffee table book. He said that, ‘The book is an effort in capturing the different emotions and expressions of nature in PU campus during the nationwide lockdown’. He further said that when people could not step out of their homes, he took this as a challenge and opportunity to document the different flavours of life at PU campus especially the tranquility and solitude of the blossoming undisturbed natureß.
Dr Prabdip Brar, University Institute of Fashion Technology and Vocational Studies, a renowned artist of the city, who contributed by aptly captioning the pictures in the book said that this coffee table book would prove to be breakthrough and help in promoting the beauty of the campus.

Delegation from Telangana praise Chandigarh’s beauty

40 members delegation led by CH. Malla Reddy, Minister of Labour and Employment in Telangana accompanied by Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Commissioners, Chairpersons and vice chairpersons of various disticricts of Telangana visited the city beautiful, Chandigarh today.
The delegation was on its one day study tour regarding “Exposure visit”. The delegation reached Chandigarh last evening and received by Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner and Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.
Today morning their day long sight visit schedule was started from MRF station, industrial area Phase-I through two electric buses of CTU. The delegation also visited Sewerage Treatment Plant, Maloya, C&D Waste Plant, Ind. area, Ph-I and Integrated Command & Control Centre, Sector 17, Chandigarh.
During their sight visits, different teams headed by nodal officers of MCC briefed about the projects at their respective sites. The delegation also visited for sightseeing including Bird Aviary near Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden and Capitol Complex.
The State Minister, Mayors, Chairpersons and Commissioners of Telangana praised the beauty of Chandigarh including best roads in the country, neat and clean parks, planned markets and no encroachments in the road sides. They also appreciated the cleanliness of the city and solid waste management system including management of STPs and running of MRF stations in city.
They said Chandigarh is very beautiful city and we were fascinated by the clean roads and parks including management of waste generated in the city by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. They thanked the Mayor and Commissioner of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for being welcomed very warmly.
PU Central Placement Cell organises Distribution of Scholarships by Sarbat Da Bhala Charitable Trust

These scholarships were granted to the students by the “Sarbat Da Bhala” charitable trust.
Dr. Amandeep Singh Marwaha, Associate Director, (CPC) and Training cum Placement Officer , UIAMS, enlightened about the various activities of the trust and about the event to the beneficiary students and participants in his introductory remarks.
Prof Meena Sharma, Director Central Placement Cell, Panjab University Chandigarh welcomed the Chief Guest Prof. Renu Vig, Dean University Instructions and Guest of Honour Mr. Sukhjeev Singh Bajaj, CEO – IFM FinCoach and the student beneficiaries and participants. . Prof Sharma briefly enlightened the students about the help provided by the trust in past and how helpful it has been to students looking at the current state of economy. She also advised the students that they should also work hard and succeed in their career and give back to the society in similar fashion.
Prof. Renu Vig expressed gratitude towards trust. She also highlighted that there is no shortcuts to success and students should not be disheartened by the failures as these are stepping stones for future success.
Mr. Sukhjeev Singh Bajaj and his team members also interacted with the students and had a special career guidance session in the BFSI(Banking Finance Service & Insurance) sector .
This year in 2022, 12 students from various departments like Evening Studies, Chemistry, Math, UICET, UIPS, Economics, Education, Zoology, and IETVE have been provided with the scholarships totalling of Rs. 80,000. Sarbat da Bhala is a charitable trust which was started by Prof (Dr) S.P. Singh Oberoi. This philanthropic body is dedicated to the cause of extending economic benefits to the underprivileged and hitherto neglected sections of the society. Rules have been framed for the purpose and a scholarship holder will be one whose parents’ annual income is less than 5 Lac rupees, has 50% marks in the qualifying examination and fulfils the mandatory class attendance conditions.
The event ended with a formal vote of thanks by Professor Anupreet Kaur Mavi Officiating Director, UIAMS who highlighted that this event gave the students an insight into the career in BFSI Sector and she also thanked the Sarbat Da Bhala trust for providing scholarships to the meritorious and needy students.
Water Supply Shut Down at Manimajra on 11th May

Accordingly the water supply from pump house-2 will affect the areas i.e. Modern Housing Complex, Gobindpura, some part of old abbadi Manimajra, Mariwala Town, Pipli wala Town, Aadarsh Nagar and Bank Colony.
The schedule for water supply for these areas will be as under:-

Delegation from Raipur (Chhattisgarh) visits Chandigarh; praises MCC projects

Aijaz Dhebar, Mayor, Sh. Parmod Dubey, ‘Sabhapati’ (Chairman) and Smt. Minal Chgan Chaube, Leader of Opposition from Raipur Municipal Corporation (Chhattisgarh) alongwith delegation of 81 councillors & officers visited the city beautiful, Chandigarh today.
The delegation was on its 2 days study tour regarding “Solid Waste Management & Best Practices of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh”. The delegation reached Chandigarh last evening and received by senior officers of MCC.
Today morning their day long sight visit schedule was started with the presentation on Best practices of Municipal Corporation at hotel Homtel, industrial area, Phase-I, Chandigarh. Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh welcomed the delegation followed by brief introduction of the projects and best practices and functions of the MCC by Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.
The Commissioner gave a brief presentation on Solid Waste Management system, Roads, Water Supply, Garden and Green belts, Street Lights, Tertiary Treated Water Supply, processing of C&D Waste, Property tax, management of Gaushalas, Vendor rehabilitation system and other projects of MCC.
The Mayor Raipur, Mayor Chandigarh and Commissioner, MCC released a booklet on Swachhata during the presentation meeting, which was highly appreciated by the delegation.
After the presentation meeting, the delegation were visited various best projects of MCC through 5 different electric buses of CTU. The visited projects including MRF Station, industrial area, Ph-I, Aerobic compost pits at fragrance garden, Sector 36 and Rose Garden, Sewerage Treatment Plant, Maloya, C&D Waste Plant, Ind. area, Ph-I and Integrated Command & Control Centre, Sector 17, Chandigarh.
During their sight visits, different teams headed by nodal officers of MCC briefed about the projects at their respective sites. The delegation also visited for sightseeing including Bird Aviary near Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden and Capitol Complex.
The Mayor and the councilors of Raipur praised the beauty of Chandigarh including best roads in the country, neat and clean parks, planned markets and no encroachments in the road sides. They appreciated the horticulture wing especially for maintaining more than 1800 neighborhood parks in the city. He also appreciated the cleanliness of the city and solid waste management system including management of STPs and running of MRF stations in city.
INDIA-UK INTERNATIONAL VIRTUAL CONFERENCE ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

While welcoming around one hundred delegates and expert speakers from India and UK, Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University talked about IP verticals in the context of Panjab University’s collaborative MoU with Nottingham Trent University. The conference was hosted jointly by Nottingham Trent University and the Panjab University. The two universities have been working in collaboration on several projects such as Student Summer School Exchange and joint research in Science and Technology. On the first day of the conference, Prof. Rupinder Tiwari (DPIIT-IPR Chair, PU) Dr. Jatinder K Arora (Exec. Director, Punjab State Council for Science & Tech) Prof. Raman Mittal (Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, UK) , Dr. Janice Denoncourt (Ass. Professor of Law, NTU, UK), Prof. Cillian Ryan (pro- VC (international), NTU,UK), Dr. Parvinder Maini (Scientific Secretary, Office of Principal Scientific Advisor, GoI.) and Dr. Yogesh Pai (DPIIT-IPR Chair Professor, National Law University,Delhi) presented their views. Mr Huw Watkins, Head , Asia Policy, UK Intellectual property Office, UK was the Guest of Honour.
Prof. Rupinder Tewari, the IPR Conference Chair said, “The conference has been organised with the motive of spreading knowledge on IPR, its importance and protection. This conference will provide an opportunity for young minds to learn of systematic development through intellectual property”.
On the second day of the IPR Conference, Dr W. M. Dhumane (DPIIT-IPR Chair Professor, Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai), Dr. Sarasija Padmanaban (]Distance Learning Tutor, WIPO Academy, Bangaluru), Dr. H Purushotham (DPIIT-IPR Chair Professor, Andhra University, Vishakhapatnam), Alex Riechel (Head, TISC Development Section, IP for innovators Department, World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and Alex Riechel (Head, TISC Development Section, IP for innovators Department, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ) addressed the delegates.
The Second session on the second day was moderated by Dr. Janice Denoncourt (Assoc. Professor, NTU, Nottingham, UK) and Prof. Devinder Singh (Chairperson, Dept. of Laws, PU, Chandigarh). It was made up of presentations by PHD students and young researchers in IP from India and UK and the discussion was lively and constructive.
The conference concluded on May 6 with presentations by Dr. V.Sattigeri (Head, CSIR-Traditional Knowledge Digtal Library ) Prof. Rupak Chakravarty (PU). A Discussion on ‘From Class Room to Court Room: Lessons from an Integrated Approach to Ip education’ was moderated by Prof. Rupinder Tewari with the contribution of Prof. Jane Jarman and Mr Peter Vaughan form NTU, UK. The conference concluded with a Roundtable Meet on’ Stimulation of IP Ecosystem in the Academic Sector.’ The participants were eminent scientists and researchers from UK and India. Views from both countries were presented, it is hoped that future plans and collaborations will emanate from this conference.
