Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University today conducted a visit to the School of Communication Studies (SCS), PU. The visit also included a tour to PU Radio Station and the upcoming TV Studio housed in the premises of SCS. Dr. Bhavneet Bhatti, Chairperson, School of Communication Studies, apprised Prof. Raj Kumar of the various events and activities being conducted at SCS and shared the new initiative of the monthly newsletter being brought out by the Department. Prof. Raj Kumar further discussed the plans and preparations to bring up the TV Studio which will be utilized for production of in-house educational and instructional programmes from Panjab University. Dr.Bhatti also shared with Prof. Raj Kumar the plans to revive the community radio station of Panjab University and the upcoming programmes being disseminated in digital modes. Prof. Raj Kumar assured support in improving the infrastructure and equipment to improve the functioning of the TV and Radio Studios. 

Prof. Raj Kumar was accompanied by Prof. Kashmir Singh, SVC ; Mr. R.K. Rai, XEN; Mr. Anil Thakur from Dept of Horticulture and other officials.

Panjab University signs Memorandum of Understanding with MGNCRE

Panjab University today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education (MGNCRE), Ministry of Education, Government of India. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University; Prof. Renu Vig, Dean University Instruction; Prof. Y.P.Verma, Registrar Panjab University; Prof. Yojna Rawat, Director, Research and Development Cell; Prof. Anju Suri, Dean College Development Council, Panjab University and Prof. Kashmir Singh, SVC, Panjab University graced the event. Mr. Samrath Sharma, Consultant, MGNCRE represented the MGNCRE and explained the various objectives of the MoU.

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, addressing the principles of the affiliated colleges, said that the present MoU is in line with the mandate of National Education Policy 2020. The focus has to be on skill enhancement, practical training and development of entrepreneurial skills. He also assured that the Panjab University will provide all support required to undertake the various objectives of the program. Mr. Samrath Sharma, MGNCRE shared the objectives of the MoU primarily to improve employability of students pursuing Under Graduate programmes and to focus on outcome based learning. The event also had an interactive session where the principles from various affiliated colleges were explained the key aspects of the MoU and how the same can be implemented at the college level.

Mayor honours change leaders at the ‘Swachh Award’ ceremony

*Chandigarh, December 13:-* Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, while honouring the ‘Change leaders’ during Swachh Award ceremony at the Open Air Theater, Sector 48, Chandigarh said that this year, the Swachh Survekshan has been redesigned innovatively, to ensure that the process becomes more robust, with focus on sustaining the behavior change and role of local change leaders.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Rajinder Sharma, Area Councillor, Sh. Kanhayia Mittal, Brand Ambassador, SBM, Chandigarh, other councilors, officers of MCC and the awardees from different categories of awards and competitions were present during the occasion.

While addressing the awardees, the Mayor also touched upon how Swachh Survekshan has become a tool for citizen engagement in the spirit of a true ‘Jan Andolan’. She said that this year, the focus on citizen participation has been moved a notch higher by introducing indicators that encourage innovations led by citizens, start-ups, entrepreneurs and Swachhata champions amongst others.

The Mayor said that the scope of the survey has now been expanded to cover 100% wards for sampling, as compared to 40% in previous years. In order to seamlessly carry out this ambitious exercise, SS 2023 will see more than twice the number of assessors deployed last year for the on-field assessment. She said that moving towards the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of a Digital India, the upcoming edition of Survekshan shall usher in improved technological interventions such as digital tracking of documents, geo-tagging of sanitation and waste management of facilities for better efficiency, and QR code-based citizens’ feedback for increased people outreach. Through these multi-faceted initiatives, the SS 2023 framework will propel the Mission towards a circular economy approach through optimum resource recovery.

She further said that Swachh Bharat Mission is an important and transformative programme which has achieved success due to involvement of all stakeholders at the grassroot level. The Hon’ble Prime Minister is the catalyst for converting the vision of the Mahatma Gandhi into reality by leading from front and converting it into a peoples’ movement. The road to this success was not easy but today we have not only achieved Water ++ but also succeeded in improved Solid Waste Management which led Chandigarh to achieve 12th rank during survekshan 2022 from 66 in 2021. Thousands of citizens are getting associated with movement and is gaining strength.

Earlier, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC welcomed the chief guest and all the awardees. She said that the campaign has been designed with ‘People First’ as its driving philosophy. Swachh Survekshan 2023 has been curated towards capturing the initiatives of cities for the overall welfare and well-being of frontline sanitation workers. The survey, flavoured with the Azaadi@75 spirit, will also give priority to the voices of senior citizens and young adults alike and reinforce their participation towards upholding the cleanliness of their city.

She further said that in order to recognize and honour the contributions made towards not only maintaining swachhata in and around their surroundings but also strengthening the MCC for achieving the goal.

Dept of Hindi, Panjab University celebrates Bhartiye Bhasha Utsav with a unique signature campaign.

Dept of Hindi, Panjab University today celebrated the Bhartiye Bhasha Utsav with a unique signature campaign where visitors were inspired to sign in their mother tongue. The event commemorates the birth anniversary of freedom fighter and great Tamil Poet Subramania Bharti.

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University also graced the occasion and participated in the signature campaign. Prof. Y.P. Verma, Registrar, Panjab University, Dr. Ali Abbas, Chairperson, Dept of Urdu also participated in the event.

Dr. Gurmeet Singh from Dept of Hindi and Convener  of the event shared that the event was a success as more than 250 visitors signed the display board in their mother tongue including Hindi, English, Punjabi, Urdu, Telgu, Kannad, Ladakhi, Marathi, to name a few. He also shared that the students had prepared display boards depicting the portraits of poets from various langauges. Along with the Department of Hindi, faculty and students from various other Departments of the University also joined the event and participated in the signature campaign.

The award is founded on the name of  Rai Bahadur, Prof. Shiv Ram Kashyap, who was the First Professor of Botany at the Honours School of Botany, Panjab University. The Chairperson ,Department of Botany, Prof. Promila Pathak delivered the welcome address and Honourable, DUI ,Panjab University, Prof. Renu Vig inaugurated the event as the Chief Guest and appreciated the Department’s efforts in conducting such programs meticulously, she also congratulated the students and mentioned that they were lucky to be a part of such a prestigious institute,. The awardees for the 7th, 8th and 9th Shiv Ram Kashyap Oration Award were conferred on; Dr. S.C. Verma, Professor  Emeritus, Dr.A.N. Purohit, Former Vice Chancellor, H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar, Uttarakhand ,and Prof. P.K. Khosla, Honourable Chancellor, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences. Further, a lecture on the topic, Changing Climate, Climatism and CO2 was delivered by Prof. A.N. Purohit. The lecture laid emphasis on how the various factors in the environment that maintain the homeostasis have dynamically changed over a long time period and how directly or inversely these affect one another. The valuable insights on the topic set the tone for the entire function. Another lecture on the topic Himalayan Biodiversity: An Overview was presented by Prof. P.K. Khosla who in his presentation very well illustrated the amalgamation of sustainability with plant science with context to Himalayan Life; he accentuated the significance of forests as one of the key prerequisites for a secure future. Zero Waste Weddings trending in Chandigarh . MCC organises second zero waste wedding under Mission ‘Garbage Free City’

Chandigarh, November 26:- Moving towards Garbage Free City through conduct of Zero Waste Events, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh supported a Zero Waste Wedding held last night at Sector 35.


Adopting the 3R principles and principles of circular economy for reducing, reusing, and recycling of waste to ensure maximum resource recovery, the event was conducted aiming at elimination of single-use plastic products under the SBM-U 2.0 to make the city “Garbage Free”.
Spearheading the mission of making Chandigarh No.1 in the country in terms of waste minimization at source, reuse and recycle of waste, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh also conducted a ‘Zero Waste Wedding’ of Ms. Pooja D/o Mr. Ram Kumar and Mr. Mukesh s/o Sh. Sarnam Singh both residents of village Attawa, where 100% scientific processing of waste was done.
While sharing information about the initiative of conducting ‘Zero Waste Events’, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh said that public events pose a challenge for the MCC in terms of generating substantial quantities of waste and their subsequent disposal, there is a need to ensure that going forward, all public events be conducted on “zero-waste” principles. She said that to minimize the amount of waste generation and need for their safe disposal are the major components of the zero waste events. This would be possible through use of environment friendly products/ items, easy access to toilets and waste disposal facilities at such events, she added.
She said that besides conducting all the events and functions of the Municipal Corporation, the MCC supported Zero Waste Weddings and other celebrations of the citizens.
She said that sufficient Safaikarmacharies were deployed alongwith one waste collection vehicle at the venues while water sprinkler deployed to curb dust pollution at outdoor events besides providing twin litter bins and providing gender segregated toilets/mobile toilet vans.
She said that the parameters were followed during conducting the zero waste events including:
No plastic / Flex posters was used for displaying information regarding the event. Event details was printed on eco-friendly paper material
The welcome board at the gate clearly mentioned about the Zero Waste Swachh Event
Natural flowers were used for decoration purposes which were later composted.
Access to the venue was divyang Friendly
No plastic water bottles of any size, plastic Cups was used
Water and food were served at stainless steel glasses procured from MCC bartan bhandar at the ‘Zero Waste Wedding’
No plastic cups / glasses were used anywhere in the venue. Only bio-degradable environment friendly cups were used for coffee and soft drinks were used
Hand sanitizers at the snacks counter and eating tables were placed
Reusable cutlery/ plates were used which were rented from bartan bhandar arranged by MCC at the ‘Zero Waste Wedding’.
Near food counter and throughout the venue key message “Do not Litter – Use blue dustbin for Dry waste and Green dustbin for wet Waste” was displayed

Green Bins (for Wet Waste) & Blue Bin (for Dry Waste) were placed at easily accessible location throughout the venue
Gender segregated toilet placed at the entrance and all toilet seats were clean and odour free at all times alongwith availability of Water and sanitizer
She further said that robust mechanism was adopted to handle waste generated at event site. All the waste collected were periodically emptied and transported in waste collection vehicle in segregated manner.

University Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management (UIHTM) organised two day national conference on Sustainability Challenges in Tourism and Hospitality Sector from 23-11-2022 to 24-11-2022. Prof Prashant Gautam welcomed all the delegates and explained the significance of the theme of the conference. Prof. Meenakshi Malhotra former Director UIHTM talked about issues of sustainability and suggested remedies for emerging challenges. Prof. Sandeep Kulshreshtha talked about going back to our knowledge of Vedas to tackle the issues of sustainability. Prof. R.K Gupta focussed on use of technology and innovations for tackling the challenges of sustainability in tourism. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor Panjab University in is presidential address emphasised about significance of our rich cultural heritage that needs to be preserved and promoted for sustainable development. He emphasised the need of students in capacity building for sustainable tourism development. ENACTUS SSBUICET TEAM OF PANJAB UNIVERSITY VISITS PINGALWARA, AMRITSAR

Enactus SSBUICET team went on a 2 day trip to Ludhiana and Amritsar for outreach of Uday project. The first day comprised of an industrial visit to Versatile Enterprises Pvt Ltd., Ludhiana, followed by visit to Pingalwara, Amritsar, told Anoop and Madhur, Event Heads of Enactus team. Pingalwara which has been established for the sick, disabled and abandoned forlorn people is truly a nucleus of a great humanitarian movement, said Tarun Dhiman, Social Media head. The visit to Pingalwara was coordinated with the help of Col.Darshan Singh Bawa, Administrator Pingalwara, conveyed Prof. Seema Kapoor, Faculty Advisor of Enactus team.

The purpose of the visit was to create awareness about safe sanitary practices amongst the resident girls and ladies, averred Samarth and Mridul, Project Heads. The Enactus team was mesmerized with the wonderful free service being provided to poor people and the facilities available at Pingalwara, said Chetan & Aditya.

The team also visited Golden Temple, Amritsar, for the blessings. It was an exhilarating experience for the team members, who visited this sacred house of worship with serene environsfor the first time, said Raj Mishra.

The team searched communities for project outreach and talked to many impoverished women in Amritsar, telling them about the importance of menstrual hygiene and how cloth pads are better for them as compared to the conventional plastic based sanitary napkins conveyed Preet, president, Enactus team. The event remained another feather in the cap for the Enactus team who has been working day and night tirelessly for the betterment of the society, said Aftab.
