International Earth Day Celebrations at Panjab University

The Technology Enabling Centre (DST-TEC) of Panjab University celebrated International Earth Day on 19th April, 2023 in the UICET-Auditorium, Panjab University. Students of Engineering, Sciences, Arts, Social Science and other streams attended the auspicious occasion. The theme of this Earth Day celebration was “Indian Philosophy on Environment”. Er. Gopal Arya, Renowned Environmentalist (All India Convener – Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi (PSG)) was the expert speaker.

Sh. Satpal Jain (Ex-MP, Chandigarh), Prof. Amrit Pal Toor (Chairperson, UICET), Prof. C R Suri (Chairman, DST-TEC), Prof. Rupinder Tewari (Mentor, DST-TEC), Prof. Manu Sharma (Coordinator, DST-TEC), Mr. Praveen (Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi, Punjab), Prof. Rakesh Sharda (PAU Ludhiana), Sh. Prabhu Nath (Rtd. Air force), Mr. Rajiv Gupta, Sh. Satyender Ji, Ms. Renu Gupta, Haryaval Panjab, and other dignitaries were also present for celebrating Earth Day. Prof. Manu Sharma, Coordinator DST-TEC welcomed all the guests and participants. He urged that we need to develop sustainable and environmental-friendly technologies for the betterment of our society.

During his talk, Er. Gopal Arya said, “Earth Day is an annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Mother Nature provides air, water, seeds, forests, food etc. to us and it’s our responsibility to save our nature”. He said that once our country was described as a “golden sparrow” where several God’s took birth during each Yuga and now due to eco-system imbalance our country have worst air quality index. Several cities are facing rise in temperature, extinction of flora and fauna, reduction in water level etc., so there is an urgent need of Ecosystem restoration which should be conceptualised efficiently during this decade by our youths. He added, “we need trees for our environment, breathe, and even after death for our funeral. During Lockdown, when everyone was at home, the Nature revives as there was no one to disturb the ecological balance”. He provided facts that if it rains 5000 litre, we get only 1 litre is the drinking water. He gave examples of Cherapunji and Jaisalmer to evaluate the value of natural water resource. Cherapunji receives maximum rainfall but have crisis for drinking water whereas Jaisalmer receives least rainfall but have better utilization. For the betterment of our environment, we need to change our attitude towards nature, empathises on betterment of nature, and change our lifestyle. He urged the youth to eliminate single-use plastic from our daily life and try to reduce our carbon footprints.

Er. Saksham Shukla, a student of UIET, Panjab University was highly impressed with the informative knowledge shared by Er. Gopal Arya. He said, “We all should adopt AEL (Attitude change, Empathetic, Lifestyle) technology for the betterment of our Mother Nature”. Dr. Pankaj Sharma, Manager (DST-TEC) said, “We have to change our attitude & lifestyle and use our traditional knowledge & wisdom to protect our environment.”

Prof. Rupinder Tewari shared that Panjab University and Chandigarh Administration have their vision to protect our environment. All the participants were enlightened with the vision of Er. Gopal Arya and made promise for the sustainable growth of mother India.

Chandigarh, April 18:- Due to replacement of 16” dia CI pipe line alongwith flow meter over 16” dia pipe line for supplying clear water to Sector 38 West and 39 A & B, Chandigarh. During this replacement the schedule of water supply will be as under:

19.04.2023 (Wednesday)

Morning: 3.30 am to 9.00 am (Normal Water Supply)

The Evening water supply from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm will be as under:-

·         There will be low water supply in Sector 1 to 11, 14 to 18, 21 A, 22 A & B, 25 and PGI, Chandigarh

·         There will be no evening water supply to Sector 38 (W), 39 A& B, Village Dadumajra and Colony Maloya. The supply of water this sectors through Water Tankers only in Evening

The residents are hereby requested to bear with the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

Dr. Naresh Kumar, coordinator ECE department, UIET along with Dr Sumit Budhiraja, Dr Neeraj Sharma, Dr. Pardeep Kaur, Dr. Harvinder Kaur, Mr. Jasveer Singh, & Ms. Rinki and 127 students of third year of ECE, UIET, Panjab University Chandigarh have visited lab facilities at Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Ramgarh on April 13, 2023. Students interacted with the scientists of TBRL & they felt motivated and asked the scientists their recruitment procedure. It was wonderful experience to visit the labs.

Chandigarh, April 14:- Celebrating the legacy of a visionary social reformer, Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has organized a function with door to door waste collectors and Safaikarmacharis at Rani Laxmi Bai Mahila Bhawan, Sector 38, here today.

Sh. Anup Gupta, city Mayor, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC and other officers paid homage to Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar for his splendid contribution in preparing the Constitution of India on his birth anniversary today and remembered his great thoughts and ideology.

While speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that the event is an opportunity to remember and celebrate Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s life and legacy, and to renew our commitment to the principles of social justice and equality that he championed throughout his career. He appealed to the public to take up the same initiatives and spread the light of education.

An award ceremony was also organized where door to door waste collectors and Safaikarmacharis were rewarded for their contribution and outstanding performances in their respective fields.

Chandigarh, April 14:- To mark the Fire Services Day, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh on Thursday organized a programme at Fire Station, Sector 17, Chandigarh. This year Fire Service Week will be organized from 14th to 20th April, 2023 under the theme “Awareness in Fire Safety for Growth of National Infrastructure (AGNI)”.

Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Chandigarh, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner and others officers laid wreaths at the Martyrs’ Column, in Fire Station, Sector 17 and paid homage to fire brigade jawans. A two-minute silence was also observed in memory of all those firemen in the country who lost their lives while on duty.

In his speech, the Mayor applauded the bravery of Fire personnel during the crisis. He appreciated the Fire department’s work during major fire incidents in the past. He applauded the firemen for distinguished and meritorious services for their work during their duties.

He said that a special campaign on fire safety would be organized in the city schools and to give more emphasis on fire safety mass awareness activities by conducting fire safety drills in the schools. The salient features like evacuation drills, implementation of fire safety order do & don’t in case of natural and manmade disaster and how to use fire extinguisher etc. would be incorporated in the Fire safety drills.

The Mayor appealed all the citizens of Chandigarh to join hands during the fire safety awareness programme to be conducted in various parts of the city from April 14th to 20th, 2023 (to mark fire service week). He said that every citizen should know about the operation of fire fighting extinguishers. He also appealed to the city residents to adopt safe housekeeping & approved electrical appliances in their houses and work places.

He said that the importance of organizing such functions to recognize the duties rendered by firemen during fire incidents and to create awareness among the masses regarding fire safety measures.

The Mayor said that we should not limited to one week’s awareness function but it should be regular exercise throughout the year to create awareness and mock drill programmes. He instructed the concerned staff for preparing proper inventory of items required throughout the year for maintenance purposes and got it approved once from the competent authority to avoid procedural delay.

The Mayor and Commissioner also distributed certificates and mementoes to the different teams of volleyball, badminton, ladder drill and hose drills:

The Fire Services Day has been observed throughout the country since 1944, the year when more than 500 persons including 66 Fire Brigade personnel lost their lives in a major fire in Mumbai. Fire brigade officials said that in 1944, a huge consignment of arms and ammunition kept at the Mumbai dockyard caught fire. The arms and ammunition was meant to be used against Japan by the British, who then ruled over India. Over 500 persons lost their lives in the fire. 66 Fire brigade personnel, who valiantly fought the fire, also lost their lives. Since then, April 14 has been observed as Fire Services Day.

Chandigarh, April 13:- Taking another initiative towards ‘Swachhata’ under ‘Garbage Free City’ mission, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today dedicated a ‘Waste to Wonder’ park to citizens of city beautiful at sector 48, Chandigarh.

Sh. Anup Gupta, city Mayor formally inaugurated the ‘waste to wonder’ park in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC, Sh. Kanwarjeet Rana, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Rajinder Sharma, area councilor, other councilors and local residents of city beautiful.

The park, spread across 1.75 acres, is a unique addition to Chandigarh’s list of amazing attractions. The structures in the park are all made of industrial and other waste products, such as iron sheets, rods, fans, automobile parts, and many more waste products.

The park includes various types of structures, including an 18-feet tall sculpture of Modulor Man by Le Corbusier, a sculpture of an outdoor metals lighting tower, a sculpture of a stone family, robotic sculptures, and much more. Even the entries, benches, and bricks in the edges of plant beds are made from the bricks procured from the C&D plant. A Ludo setup is also made from the C&D plant.

While sharing about the initiative, the Mayor said that this is a remarkable achievement towards sustainable development. The park will showcase the beauty of waste and inspire citizens to manage waste effectively. He said that this park will become a popular attraction in the city and encourage people to take an active interest in environmental conservation.

The Mayor said that the Waste to Wonder Park is a perfect example of how to use waste productively and creatively. It is not only a unique attraction but also helps in creating awareness about waste management and its positive impact on the environment.

He further said that this park will not only contribute to the environment but also serve as a recreational space for the citizens. It is an excellent example of how waste can be transformed into a beautiful space. With the inauguration of the Waste to Wonder Park, Chandigarh takes a significant step towards a sustainable and eco-friendly future, said the Mayor.

AICFB NATIONAL WOMEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE VISUALLY CHALLENGED, 2023

The AICFB National Women Chess Championship for the Visually Challenged, 2023, the premium National chess event for the visually impaired women chess players of the country, is to commence from 13th April, 2023 and continue till 16th April, 2023 in the city of Chandigarh. The tournament is being jointly organized by National Association for the Blind and All India Chess Federation for The Blind in association with Equal Opportunity Cell (PwDs) & Directorate of Sports, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The tournament features a number of players who have participated and won medals in various international events.

Selected women participants from more than 14 states across the country are competing over a period of 4 days to ascertain the winners. Ms Mrunali Pande, Ms Megha Chakravarthy and Tijan Gawar are some of the top international Para Olympians who have secured medals and were facilitated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi, are also participating in this tournament.

This tournament serves as a pathway for 2 very important international events. While 6 players (3 each from category totally blind and partially blind) will be selected for the 4th Asian Para games to be held in China later this year, the top 2 rankers of this tournament will get an opportunity to represent the country in the IBCA women chess championship to be held in Spain.

It is worth mentioning that the participants gained eligibility to this tournament after qualifying the selection tournaments in their own states followed by similar events in their respective zones. The inauguration ceremony will be held on 13th April, 2023 at 10 a.m. at the Gymnasium Hall, Panjab University, Chandigarh and will be Chaired by Shri Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India and Prof (Dr) Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor Panjab University.

UIET student bags ALL INDIA RANK 1 in GATE 2022 Engineering Science

Anshuman is a Final Year (BE) student of Mechanical Engineering of UIET, Panjab University, Chandigarh. In GATE 2023 he secured AIR-1 in Engineering Sciences and AIR-56 in Mechanical Engineering.

He started preparation for GATE in his 2nd year of engineering during 1st wave of COVID 19. He said ‘’faculties at UIET and my family were supportive, and always motivated and guided me during my preparation journey”.

He appeared for GATE 2022 when he was in 3rd year of Engineering and secured AIR-222 in Engineering Sciences (XE) and AIR-2091 in Mechanical Engineering (ME).

As a stress buster he watched movies, web series of sci-fi, educational and motivational themes and also played with his dog ‘Pochi’

‘’During the course of preparation of GATE exam, a student must focus more on concepts, derivation, quality problems and should give weekly quizzes that are relevant for GATE and use virtual calculator from starting’’ he said. He wants to peruse M-tech in Aerospace Engineering at IISc Bangalore or Thermal Engineering at IIT Bombay, to have a career in research in private sector.

The Board of Finance meeting of Panjab University, Chandigarh held today and members deliberated on all the agenda items, few of them are as follows:

The members of BoF approved the grant of handicapped allowance of Rs. 1000/- p.m. to disabled employees of Panjab University with effect from 1.1.2023.

The members of BoF approved the pay of directly recruited Professors (prior to 01.01.2006) as per UGC Regulations be fixed at a stage not below Rs. 43000/- in the Pay Band IV of Rs. 37400-67000+AGP 10000 in terms of Clause-4.0 of Schedule relating to main clause 6.8.0 of UGC Regulations 2010.

The members of BoF approved the position of Associate Dean Student Welfare be created to be filled in by giving an additional charge to a Teacher (as in case of DSW) with an Honorarium @ 3000/- pm to the teacher for holding the additional charge as Associate Dean of Student Welfare.

The members of BoF approved the enhancement of GST rate on construction works from 12% to 18%.

The members of BoF approved the enhancement of Honorarium to Guest Faculty w.e.f. 18.1.2023.

The members of BoF approved the Rate of Honorarium for selection/screening-cum-evaluation (CAS) of Chancellor/Vice-Chancellor’s nominee from Rs. 2500/- to Rs. 5000/- per day and the other terms and conditions regarding entitlement shall remain same.

The members of BoF approved the recommendations of the Vice Chancellor to enhance the fixed remuneration of Part time Assistant Professors (in subjects of law) of the Department of Laws, University Institute of Legal Studies, PU Regional Center, Muktsar, S.S.Giri, PU Regional Center, Hoshiarpur and PU Regional Center, Ludhiana from Rs. 22,800/- pm (fixed) to Rs. 43,275/- pm (fixed) for a working load of 12 hours a week, effective from academic session 2023-24 onwards.

Fire & Rescue Services department MCC celebrates Khelo India campaign

Chandigarh, April 10:- Aiming to encourage young people to take up sports and live a healthy lifestyle, the Fire & Rescue Services department of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has celebrated Khelo India campaign during which various sports activities were organized.

Following the directions of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, the Fire & Rescue Services department has started this unique initiative by organizing Fire Service Week with a series of exciting sports events. The event was inaugurated today by Sh. Gurinder Singh Sodhi, Joint Commissioner cum Chief Fire Officer, MCC. He expressed his appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the fire service personnel and their commitment to public safety.

Teams from seven different fire stations have come together to participate in a volleyball and badminton competition that will last for two days. The Khelo India Campaign is a national initiative that aims to encourage young people to take up sports and live a healthy lifestyle. The Fire Service Week, which will run from 14-20 April, is an annual event that honors the bravery and sacrifice of firefighters and their families.

The volleyball and badminton competition was an excellent opportunity for the fire service personnel to showcase their physical fitness and sports skills with team spirit. It has also provided a platform for the different fire stations to come together and work as a family.
