*Chandigarh, November 23:-* Aimed at strengthening the storm water drainage system at Sector 56, Chandigarh, the Municipal Corporation has started the work of augmentation of providing and laying pipeline for the disposal of storm water line at sector 56, Chandigarh.

City Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta today laid the foundation stone for the augmentation of providing and laying storm water drainage system in the presence of Sh. Manaur, area councilor, other councilors and other prominent persons of local area.

While speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that this work will not only improve the storm water drainage system in the area but also prevent rain water stagnation, ensuring smooth passage for commuters and local residents.

He said that the existing storm water drainage system in sector 56 is of smaller diameter and very old and broken at many places causing chocked with malba and silt etc. the lines underneath the roads were not serviceable. The road gullies are also inadequate and due to chockage of lines, the same do not function properly for disposal of rain water.

The Mayor said that this work will be completed within 6 months of time period at approximate cost of Rs. 7 crore. He said that the MCC will provide and lay 1200mm, 900mm, 700mm, 600mm, 450mm and 300mm RCC NP-2 pipe line having approximately length of 238 mtr., 822 mtr., 1227 mtr., 2549 mtr. & 4795 mtr respectively alongwith construction of machine hole chambers and road gully chambers and 300mm RCC pipe line having approximately length of 1785 mtr. for connection of road gullies with machine holes.

He further said that the aim of this project is to improve the SWD system and to prevent rainwater stagnation, ensuring smooth passage for commuters and local residents of the area.

Northern Zone Vice Chancellors’ Conference on Implementation of NEP 2020 Commences with Enthusiasm at Panjab University

Panjab University played host to a two-day Northern Zone Vice Chancellors Conference on the critical theme of “Implementation of NEP 2020,” which commenced on November 22, 2023, at the Law Auditorium. This event is being organized by Panjab University Chandigarh in collaboration with University Grants Commission (UGC) and Central University, Haryana. The conference aims to delve into strategies for effectively implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in HEIs.

The proceedings began with a warm welcome extended by Prof Renu Vig, the Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University who also informed that the university is taking all the necessary measures to implement NEP 2020 from the forthcoming session in full spirit. Following this, Professor Tankeshwar Kumar, the Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Haryana outlined the objectives of the workshop, setting the stage for insightful discussions. He informed the participants that the conference is attended by representatives from around 240 HEIs from North India.  

A highlight of the event was the opening remarks by Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), who emphasized the paramount importance of the NEP for students and underscored the urgent need for its swift implementation in universities. He highlighted that Higher Education (HE) system is passing through difficult times and NEP 2020 is like a light at the end of the tunnel. He said that the students are eagerly awaiting the benefits that implementation of the NEP bring for them such as multiple entry/exit system, multidisciplinary courses, skill based courses to name a few across the country. He argued that UGC is aware that there are some hurdles or roadblocks too in the swift and effective implementation of NEP such as lack of infrastructure, research ecosystem shortcomings and faculty shortage. He called upon the Vice-Chancellors (VCs) to take responsibility and motivate faculty members and students so that Higher Education system is transformed completely as was envisioned by NEP policy makers. He emphasized on the collective responsibility and effort of all the stakeholders to train the younger generation through NEP 2020 so that India can become a developed nation by 2047.

A short film showcasing UGC initiatives related to the NEP was also presented, providing attendees with a visual insight into the endeavors supporting the policy.

The inaugural address was delivered by Shri Bandaru Dattatraya, the Honorable Governor of Haryana, offering a comprehensive perspective on the significance of NEP 2020 in the broader educational landscape. He called upon all the stakeholders and intellectuals to come together to implement the NEP 2020 in its spirit. 

The event concluded with a vote of thanks extended by Professor Rumina Sethi, Dean of University Instruction at Panjab University.

Looking ahead to the second day of the conference, participants were informed that various sessions, designed to facilitate focused discussions, would take place in the first half. The announcement of groups for these sessions marked the conclusion of the first day’s proceedings.

Adding a touch of cultural vibrancy, Panjab University organized a captivating cultural program for the esteemed guests, providing a delightful conclusion to the first day of the conference. Over the next day, participants are set to engage in brainstorming sessions, exploring and deliberating on effective strategies for the implementation of NEP 2020. The conference stands as a significant platform for fostering dialogue and collaboration toward the advancement of education in the spirit of the National Education Policy.

An online international symposium on “India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor” organized by UIAMS, Panjab University attracted more than 300 participants, including students, researchers, and faculty members. Inauguration of the session was performed by Prof. Renu Vig, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Panjab University. Lord Diljit Rana, MBE, Baron of Malone, House of Lords, UK opened the Symposium as the Chief Guest. Prof. Monika Aggarwal, Director, UIAMS, welcomed the expert speakers from India and across the globe.

An array of experts participated in the symposium, including Dr. Sreejith Balasubramanian, Director of Middlesex University’s Centre for Supply Chain Excellence, Prof. Sanjeev Prashar, Professor, Indian Institute of Management, Raipur, India. Prof. Amrit Sagoo, Head of Department, School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, Nottingham Trent University. Prof. Sumantra Ray, NNEdPro Chair & Executive Director, St John’s Innovation Centre Cambridge, England. A special address was delivered by Dr Sandeep Kaura, Advisor, National Skill Development Corporation, Government of India. Each expert shared their valuable insights on how to strengthen economic ties between these regions and discussed investment opportunities that could help in achieving this goal.

The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor in her address mentioned that The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor represents a visionary effort to enhance connectivity and cooperation between India, the Middle East, and Europe. Spanning vast geographic expanses, this corridor envisions a seamless network of trade routes, infrastructure development, and technological integration, facilitating the movement of goods, services, and ideas.Dr.Balasubramanianhighlighted the significance and types of economic corridors, and its importance for promoting international trade. The current trade situation in various countries and the impact of the ongoing war on trade along with India’s stand to balance this situation was discussed by Prof. Prashar. Prof. Sagoo stressed on developing a skill-based university curriculum and conductingskill trainings for better employability in different countries for the Indian workforce. Prof. Ray gave important insights on developing a global knowledge economy and food nutrition security in strengthening the economic relations. Dr. Kaura in his special address focussed on the importance of developing skill based international workforce and the initiatives of the Indian Government for Skill Development.The symposium was a great platform for the exchange of ideas and knowledge, and it provided a constructive dialogue to further enhance the relationships between India, the Middle East, and Europe.

Providing a platform for constructive dialogue and knowledge exchange, the symposium was a great success.

*Chandigarh, 19 November: -* On World Toilet Day, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) acknowledges and celebrates the exceptional efforts of sanitation workers, as “स्वच्छता सेवी,” in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards in city’s public conveniences. In recognition of their selfless service, Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra  led a city-wide cleanliness drive with  a visit to  Community Toilet in Sanjay Colony, Industrial Area, Ph. 1, managed by the dedicated Pooja Self Help Group.

During her visit, Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra expressed her gratitude towards the “स्वच्छता सेवी” for their unwavering commitment to maintaining the facility to high standards, showcasing the spirit of inclusivity and accessibility for all.

In addition, a massive citizen-led cleaning campaign was organized across 146 toilets throughout the city, highlighting the power of community collaboration in promoting clean and hygienic facilities. Members of Market Welfare Associations (MWAs), Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and MC officers enthusiastically participated, demonstrating their dedication to the well-being of Chandigarh’s residents.

Chief Engineer Sh.N.P Singh joined MWA members in Sector 23 to acknowledge and support the remarkable work carried out by the “स्वच्छता सेवी” in maintaining the local Public Convenience. Their tireless efforts to make the facility inclusive and accessible to all deserve commendation, underscoring the significant contributions men are making towards cleanliness and hygiene in Chandigarh.

Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra shared that Chandigarh is home to 329 toilets, with an impressive 50% being diligently managed by MWAs, RWAs, SHGs, and NGOs. MC Chandigarh remains steadfast in its commitment to ensure these sanitation facilities meet the highest standards of hygiene and maintenance.

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Celebrates Chhath Puja with a Difference*

*Chandigarh, November 19:-* Chhath, the four-day festival that commenced with nahay khay (a ritual river bath) on November 17th and will conclude with arghaya (prayer and dedication) on November 20th, is being celebrated in a unique way this year in Chandigarh. The Municipal Corporation of the city has developed a beautiful sarovar (water body) for performing the ritual at Indra Colony, Manimajra, along with all the necessary materials through its self-help groups, all in one platform.

It was a zero waste programme organised by the MCC. After the programme all the decoration flowers will be used in Arpan project of MCC and other residue of ritual puja of Chhat will be collected by the Visar Vahan for recycling.

To make Chhath Puja a truly special occasion this year, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has provided a comprehensive platform for performing the ritual puja at a green belt in Indra Colony. This includes the development of a beautiful water body and an attractive landscape. Additionally, green rooms have been set up for changing clothes, and stalls have been organized to provide all the required items for the puja ceremony, prepared by women Self-Help Groups.

In order to cater to the needs of the general public participating in the puja, zero waste food stalls have been set up, displaying a variety of food items from registered vendors of the Municipal Corporation. Furthermore, various cultural programs and performances by renowned Bhojpuri singers have been organized to enhance the festive atmosphere.

“The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is delighted to provide a holistic platform for the celebration of Chhath Puja this year,” said City Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta. He said that the MCC has taken into consideration the needs and preferences of the residents and visitors alike, by offering a serene environment, necessary materials, and enjoyable cultural programs. The aim was to create a memorable and inclusive experience for everyone involved, he added.

He said that the MCC is committed to making Chandigarh a city that celebrates its diverse cultures and traditions. The provision of a dedicated space and necessary amenities for Chhath Puja exemplifies the dedication to ensuring that everyone can celebrate their festivals in a meaningful and joyful manner.”

The Mayor further said that in an effort to maintain cleanliness in and around the green belt, the Municipal Corporation has taken steps to collect the residue from the ritual puja site using its Visar Vahan on November 20th.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Municipal Commissioner said that this unique celebration of Chhath Puja exemplifies the commitment of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation to creating inclusive and delightful experiences for its citizens. She said that  the initiative not only provides a serene environment for the puja but also highlights the importance of sustainability and cleanliness.

End of an Era

Dr. B. N. Goswamy, founding Chairperson of the the Department of Fine Arts and Professor Emeritus in Art History, Panjab University breathed his last on 17.11.23, bringing to an end an era.

An icon for all art historians and scholars Dr. B. N. Goswamy strode like a colossus in the field of art history, to which he gave a new meaning and direction. Known not only all over the country but across the world as one of the most eminent scholars in the field, he will continue to inspire generations of art historians. His was the vision behind the setting up of the Museum of Fine Arts, Panjab University and its collection of priceless works of art.

A man who choose to give up a career in the IAS for academic pursuits and research, apart from being a stalwart in the field of art history his deep knowledge to poetry, specially Urdu poetry, upon which he held audiences spellbound, was part of the mystique that he weaved.

One of the leading lights of Panjab University, in service and after retirement, his contribution to the University as a whole and to the Department of Fine Arts (Art History and Visual Arts) and the Museum of Fine Arts will always be remembered. Professor Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor Panjab University while condoling his passing away talked about the irreparable loss to the University with the passing away of this leading legend.

IIC Regional Meet 2023

Ministry of Education (MoE), Govt. of India has taken initiative to establish MoE’s Innovation Cell (MIC) to encourage inculcating the culture that will foster innovation in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The MIC intends to nurture the entrepreneurial skills among young people helping and encouraging them to have innovative ideas and converting them to prototypes. MIC has envisioned to have Institution’s Innovation Council (IICs) across HEIs in India. To promote innovation, IICs of HEIs are formed for developing proper ecosystem.

Panjab University, Chandigarh is glad to announce that Ministry of Education has selected PU as the first host institution for organizing IIC (Institution’s Innovation Council) regional meets2023 on 21st November. This meet will be executed under the banner of Atma-nirbhar-Bharat, to inculcate the vision of Make-in-India campaign in start-ups, entrepreneurs, IIC institutes and innovators. Registration and signatory campaign for innovation & start-up will be done online through IIC registration portal. The institutes will be providing their nominations, displaying their posters at the meet.

An entrepreneur market “Udyami Bazaar” will be set-up for innovators to sell their innovative products and publicize their brand. KARTAVYABODH&Open interactive sessions are another new initiative to be executed which will be involving some extracurricular activities for engagement of innovators. Pitching session and One-on-One mentoring sessions will provide guidance to entrepreneurs of this region and few selected start-ups will be selected for national nominations for investment up to 10 Lakhs.

Innovation round table discussion with Angel investors, Incubators and resource agencies will be laying down seeds for leveling up of entrepreneurial ecosystem. Knowledge sharing sessions will be given by IIC institutions focusing on IP commercialization & Technology transfer. Some YUKTI Innovators will get a chance to demonstrate their technology/ product in front of panelists and the best innovators and IIC posters will be felicitated at the valedictory session.

All this will be setting a benchmark for the upcoming meets and ecosystem development initiatives. At the end of the day, everyone will have something to take away.

*Chandigarh, November 14:-* Aimed at strengthening the sewerage system & storm water drainage system at village Burail, Chandigarh, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has started the work of augmentation of providing and laying pipeline for the disposal of storm water and construction of streets with paver blocks in internal streets.

Member Parliament of Chandigarh Mrs. Kirron Kher today laid the foundation stone for the augmentation of providing and laying sewerage and storm water drainage system in the presence of Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Kanwarjeet Singh Rana, Senior Deputy Mayor & area councilor, other councilors and other prominent persons of local area.

While speaking on the occasion, the Member Parliament said that this work will not only improve the sewerage and storm water drainage system in the village but also prevent rain water stagnation, ensuring smooth passage for commuters and local residents.

She said that it was long pending demand of the Burail residents that rain water accumulates and causes inconvenience to local residents and commuters on some internal streets of village. After conducting a survey, it has been decided that laying of new sewerage and storm water drainage lines are necessary on these internal streets. Therefore, the Municipal Corporation has started this work.

The Mayor said that this work will be completed within 12 months of time period at approximate cost of Rs. 3 crore. He said that the MCC will provide and lay 150mm, 200mm, 250mm & 300mm i/d SW pipeline with an approximate length of 340mtr, 465mtr, 400mtr & 320mtr respectively along with the construction of machine holes for strengthening the sewerage system.

He said that regarding resolving the stagnation of storm water problem, a brick masonry channel will be constructed having approx. length of 780mtr, with average depth of 2 ft. channel covered with precast RCC gratings and slabs. The Mayor said that once the pipeline is laid, the streets will be reconstructed using paver blocks. The aim of this project is to improve the Sewerage & SWD system and to prevent rainwater stagnation, ensuring smooth passage for commuters and local residents, he added.

Chandigarh, November 7:- Aiming at empowering women in water governance, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has launched ‘Jal Diwali-Women for water, Water for women’ campaign, under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and DAY-NULM.

City Mayor, Sh. Anup Gupta and Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Municipal Commissioner today launched the campaign and flagged off an educational tour of 37 women SHG groups to water works sector 12 and sector 39 as ‘Amrut Mitra’.

While sharing about the campaign, Sh. Anup Gupta, the Mayor said that the primary objective of the Jal Diwali campaign is to empower and inspire women through the participation of SHGs as “Amrut Mitra” in the city beautiful. The visit to the water works aimed to provide these women with a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in supplying clean and safe drinking water to households.

He said that by offering this firsthand experience, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh aims to foster a sense of belongingness and ownership among women towards the water infrastructure. The campaign showcases the city’s unwavering commitment to ensuring clean water for all residents and strives to ignite a sense of empowerment among the visiting SHGs.

He expressed his enthusiasm for the campaign, stating, “Jal Diwali is an important step towards women’s active participation in water governance. By involving and empowering women, we can create a more inclusive and sustainable society. I am confident that this campaign will inspire these women to become catalysts for positive change in their own communities.”

MC Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS emphasized the significance of the campaign, saying, “Water is a precious resource, and it is crucial that we engage all members of society, including women, in its governance. The Jal Diwali campaign aims to educate and empower women, enabling them to contribute effectively towards the sustainable management of water resources. We hope that this experience will encourage the participating SHGs to take similar initiatives within their communities, thus building a more sustainable and healthier future for all.”

She said that the Jal Diwali – Women for Water, Water for Women campaign represents a remarkable collaboration between AMRUT and DAY-NULM, demonstrating the collective commitment to promoting gender equality and sustainable water management. This initiative serves as a stepping stone towards achieving the goal of providing clean and sustainable water resources for all residents of Chandigarh, she added.

UIFT organises various events to mark VIGILANCE AWARENESS WEEK 2023

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated Vigilance Week. Various activities like seminar and competitions like T-shirt painting, poetry recital and reel creation on the theme ‘Anti-Corruption’ and undertaking integrity pledge were conducted throughout the week to create awareness against corruption among the students.

The seminar was on the theme “Say no to corruption, commit to the nation”. The resource person for the session was advocate NavnikaTuteja. She addressed students and inspired them to combat corruption. She discussed the detrimental effects of corruption on various sectors, encouraging students to play an active role in the fight against it. Advocate Tuteja stressed the importance of awareness and individual commitment in this endeavour. Her real-world examples and relatable anecdotes resonated with the audience, fostering meaningful discussions. The event provided a platform for students to engage with an advocate dealing with such cases and left a lasting impact, empowering the future leaders of Panjab University.

Many students participated in a reel making competition. Smali, Yogita, Himanshi, Preet, Sapna and Ardas from  BSc Fashion &Lifestyle Technology Semester 3,  highlighted the issue of bribery by acting in their reel, which was awarded the first position. Anjali, Kali, Jashan and Mitanshali, from Semester 3, conveyed the message of anti-corruption through pictures and quotes in their reel, and were awarded the second position. Arun and Tushar, M.Sc. Semester 3, used drawing as a medium to convey the message of No Corruption in their reel which was awarded third position.

In the poetry recital competition Arsh and Pratigya of B.Sc. semester 3 were awarded with first and second position, respectively. Participants enthusiastically participated in T-Shirt Paintingwhere Kajal, Mandeep, and Raina of B.Sc. Semester 1 bagged first , second and third positions respectively.All faculty, research scholars, staff and students took an integrity pledge to be vigilant and corruption free. The participants pledged to follow the highest standard of integrity in all walks of life.Ms. Arushi, Ms. Ginni, Ms. Kulbir and Ms. Akanksha, Junior Research Fellows at UIFT conducted these events.
