*Chandigarh, January 25:-* The employees of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today pledged to vote in every election fearlessly and without being influenced to mark 14th National Voters’ Day under the theme of – ‘Nothing Like Voting, I Vote For sure’ is a continuation from last year’s theme.

          Sh. Gurinder Singh Sodhi, Joint Commissioner, MCC administered oath to the employees of MCC. They pledged that they citizens of India, having abiding faith in democracy, hereby pledged to uphold the democratic traditions of our country and the dignity of free, fair and peaceful election, and to vote in every election fearlessly and without being influenced by considerations of religion, race, caste, community, language or any inducement.

*MCC reaches out to residents for community participation in it’s journey towards Swachh Chandigarh*

*MCC to honor 6 best MWAs at Republic Day 2024 Celebrations under Swachh Bazaar Pratiyogita*

*Chandigarh, January 25:-* The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh will felicitate six Market Welfare Associations (MWAs) during the Republic Day function for their exceptional performance in the Swachh Bazaar Pratiyogita.

In its mission of Swachh Chandigarh, a Swachh Bazaar Pratiyogita was conducted by Municipal Corporation which aimed to further Swachhta (cleanliness) by encouraging clean and eco-friendly celebrations during the Swachh Diwali Shubh Diwali campaign held from November 6th to 12th, 2023. The competition sought to assess the level of Swachhta in various markets and acknowledge the efforts of MWAs in promoting cleanliness and sustainable practices.

A team of assessors evaluated the participating markets on several parameters, including general cleanliness, cleanliness of public toilets, availability and cleanliness of Twin Bins, enforcement of a ban on single-use plastic, presence of key awareness messages, beautification of the market, initiatives to minimize the use of single-use plastic, and the presence of shops selling eco-friendly and local materials/products.

Out of the 19 registered Market Welfare Associations, the following six MWAs demonstrated exemplary commitment to Swachhta and emerged as winners in the Swachh Bazaar Pratiyogita:

*1. First position:*

   – Market Dealers Association Sector 18 D, represented by Sanjay Puri

   – Bright Traders Welfare Association Sector 23 C, represented by Manoj Bajaj

   – Shopkeeper Association Kiran Block Sector 22 D, represented by Parveen Duggal Vishu

*2. Second Position:*

   – Market Welfare Association Sector 46 C, represented by Balwinder Singh

*3. Third Position:*

   – Market Welfare Association Sector 24 D, represented by Avnish Bansal

   – Traders Welfare Association of Sector 21, represented by RL Bajaj

Municipal Commissioner Ms.Anindita Mitra, IAS said that these MWAs have set a shining example of dedication and innovation in creating clean and sustainable marketplaces. Their initiatives have made significant contributions to waste management, plastic waste reduction, community awareness, and the promotion of local and eco-friendly products.

She further added that , 

In recognition of their outstanding efforts, the first-place MWA has also been nominated and selected for State Awards on January 26th, 2024. The second and third-place holders, along with the honorable mentions, will be felicitated during the Republic Day celebrations at the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

She added that the Municipal Corporation  expresses gratitude to all the participants for their active involvement in the Swachh Bazaar Pratiyogita. These collective efforts reinforce the commitment to achieve a cleaner, greener, and sustainable Chandigarh.

*MCC honors Chandigarhian girls for their exceptional contribution towards Swachhata on National Girl Child Day*

*Chandigarh, January 24:-* On the occasion of National Girl Child Day, the MC Chandigarh recognized and honored  girls from the city for their exceptional contribution towards promoting Swachhata practices like RRR, Home Composting, Segregation of Waste and refusing to use banned plastics and fostering community growth. MC Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS acknowledged their outstanding efforts and achievements by felicitating them with a gesture of appreciation –  certificates and a handmade gift crafted made by Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

The Commissioner said that the remarkable dedication and commitment shown by these young girls in promoting cleanliness and sustainability in their communities is truly inspiring. Their efforts are invaluable in creating a cleaner and greener future for Chandigarh, and they serve as role models for others to actively participate in the Swachhata movement.

With the unwavering support of MC Chandigarh, they have taken charge of disposing plastic waste in their respective areas, effectively ensuring a pristine and untainted environment for their communities. These visionary individuals have spearheaded pioneering waste segregation initiatives, paving the way for a future that is both cleaner and greener, while their tireless efforts in organizing cleanliness awareness drives near school campuses, engaging in captivating wall beautification projects, and actively participating in the creation of cloth bags as sustainable alternatives to plastic have collectively contributed to visually stunning and environmentally conscious surroundings.

In their pivotal roles as advocates for waste segregation, they have instigated a significant shift in behaviour, influencing others to shun single-use plastics and embrace the practice of waste categorization.

By actively engaging in home composting, they have made substantial strides in reducing waste and promoting practices that are ecologically sustainable. Through their well-executed awareness campaigns on the significance of cleanliness and sanitation, their participation in slogan writing activities aimed at conserving paper and safeguarding the environment, and their skillful choreography of street plays to raise awareness among their neighbors, they have effectively nurtured a heightened sense of consciousness within their communities. 

Additionally, their involvement in home composting and leadership in plantation drives have played an instrumental role in creating a more verdant and sustainable environment.

*MCC organizes hands-on-training session on home composting for school students*

*Chandigarh, January 24:-* To mark the international day of education, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has organized a special hands-on training session on home composting to school students at GMSSS-23 in collaboration with trained Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under expert supervision. On the occasion the MCC emphasizes the foundational importance of education and its growth within the community.

With a dedication towards sustainable development, the MCC actively participated in initiatives promoting education, environmental awareness, and community empowerment. Brand Amabsaasor SBM 2.0 Arryan Madhu Chitkara also shared his experience of home composting with the students. Also, students from other eminent schools shared their experience on composting with their fellow students citywide. This interactive session equipped students with practical knowledge and skills to incorporate composting practices into their daily lives, fostering environmental responsibility from an early age.

Earlier the MCC has organized a training session on home composting for SHGs and MC staff, led by field experts. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about composting among citizens, empowering individuals and communities to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to the environment’s overall well-being.

MCC takes serious note of incident took place during anti encroachment drive at Krishna Market sector 41*

*Chandigarh, January 24:-* Taking serious note of the illegal encroachments in Krishna market, sector 41 and the incident between the shopkeepers/vendors and enforcement officials on duty, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has warned the violators and shopkeepers to avoid creating any kind of hurdle while performing official duty or else criminal action/FIR shall be registered against him/her.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh directed the concerned officers of enforcement wing to act tough against the encroachments and register FIRs against  violators, who create hurdles in performance of official duty.

She also warned the violators to follow the norms of vending in future or else face the legal action as per law.

*MCC Commits to Empowering Communities and Developing Sustainabile practices*

This collection is carried out by the dedicated collection vehicle – Visar Vahan – which collects floral waste that is then skillfully transformed into fragrant incense cones and sticks by the ARPAN SHGs. This initiative aims to ensure a cleaner and more environmentally friendly city.

She highlighted that this collaboration creates sustainable livelihood opportunities for women and promotes the adoption of sustainable practices. Through the recycling of floral waste and the promotion of eco-friendly products, MCC aims to not only preserve the environment but also generate livelihood opportunities for women. This drive, which includes activities such as sweeping, washing, repairing, litter picking, cleaning dustbins, and collecting floral waste, will continue until January 22, coinciding with the Pran Pratishtha Ceremony at Ram Janmabhoomi. These proactive measures exemplify MCC’s unwavering commitment to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in public spaces.

*Distributes compostable bags to vendors near places of worship under ‘Swachh Teerath Campaign’*

*Chandigarh, January 15:-* To reduce use of banned plastic and to promote sustainability Municipal Corporation Chandigarh distributed compostable bags to vendors near prominent places of worship as part of the Swachh Teerath Campaign,today. The campaign seeks to encourage vendors to adopt eco-friendly practices. Aryan, the Swachh Bharat Mission Brand Ambassador, handed over the compostable bags to vendors at Iscon Temple, Sector-36, and Sai Temple, Sector 29. The MC team also briefed vendors about the harmful effects of single-use plastic and highlighted the advantages of using compostable bags.

Alongwith the distribution of compostable bags, a deep cleansing drive is currently underway at worship places in the city which will continue till January 22, coinciding with the Pran Pratishtha Ceremony at Ram Janmabhoomi. The drive  includes sweeping, litter picking, cleaning dustbins, and collecting floral waste. These proactive measures,  demonstrate  unwavering commitment to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in public spaces.

*National Youth Day: MC CHANDIGARH HIGHLIGHTS YOUTH’S ROLE IN CREATING A SUSTAINABLE, GARBAGE-FREE CITY*

*Chandigarh, January 12:-* Aiming in creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city, On National Youth Day, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh emphasized the pivotal role of youth in building a sustainable and garbage-free city. The MC Chandigarh organized a special visit to provide college students with hands-on experience, enabling them to understand the functions of solid waste management beyond the classroom.

Municipal Commissioner, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS said that MC Chandigarh believes engaging the youth in such experiential learning opportunities will foster a sense of ownership and responsibility towards waste management. By providing them with practical exposure, the MC aims to inspire the younger generation to actively participate in building a greener and more sustainable future.

Under the expert guidance of MC officials, a group of 50 college students participated in a field visit to various waste management facilities. This visit aimed to enhance their practical knowledge and create awareness about sustainable waste management practices. The students gained insights into landfilling operations and witnessed the ongoing dumpsite remediation process at the Daddumajra landfill site.

Furthermore, the students learned about mechanical segregation techniques for recyclable recovery during their visit to the Pink Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and Garbage Transfer Station. They also observed the transition from Primary Door-to-Door Collection and Transportation (C&T) to Secondary C&T, including the compaction of fluffy waste in compacted capsules for cost-saving purposes.

To broaden their understanding of waste management, the students visited the Solid Waste Processing Plant. Here, they learned about the processing of both wet and dry waste to produce compost and Refused Derived Fuel (RDF), respectively. This hands-on experience provided the students with valuable insights into the waste management process and the importance of resource recovery.

In addition, the students visited the Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste management plant located in Industrial Area Phase 1. They received education on the process of converting C&D waste into construction raw materials such as fine sand, coarse aggregates, bricks, and Paver Blocks. This visit aimed to instill a sense of responsibility among the youth towards the proper disposal and recycling of construction waste.

*Chandigarh horticulture waste processing plant completes one year of operations*

*Chandigarh, January 10:-* Playing a pivotal role in effectively managing the substantial amount of horticulture waste generated within the city, the Chandigarh’s state-of-the-art Horticulture Waste Management Plant completed one year of successful operations today.

Inaugurated by Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh on 10th January, 2023, this plant represents a significant step towards Chandigarh’s mission to become a garbage-free city. The concerted efforts of the Municipal Corporation have propelled Chandigarh from the 66th rank in the Swachhata Sarvekshan of 2020 to the 12th rank in 2021 among cities with a population of over one lakh. This year, Chandigarh has been selected as a National Awardee at the Swacch Survekshan 2023 awards, which will be held on January 11th at Bharat Mandapam, Delhi. Her Excellency, the President of India, will present the award to the city.

With over 1.65 lakh trees, more than 1900 parks and gardens, Chandigarh has always been committed to preserving its natural beauty. To efficiently handle the increasing volume of horticulture waste, the Municipal Corporation took the initiative to establish an advanced Horticulture Waste Management Plant with a daily capacity of 30 TPD. This plant has been designed to convert horticulture waste into high-calorific-value briquettes, which are subsequently sold as industrial fuel, contributing to the circular economy of Horticulture Waste Management.

City Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta expressed his satisfaction, stating that the successful completion of one year of the Horticulture Waste Processing Plant is a remarkable achievement for Chandigarh. It showcases our commitment to sustainable waste management practices and reinforces the vision of a garbage-free city.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh congratulated the entire staff and manpower of the Horticulture processing plant, emphasizing the Horticulture Waste Processing Plant has revolutionized the way MCC manages horticulture waste. By converting it into valuable briquettes, the MCC not only contribute to the circular economy but also reduce our reliance on traditional fuelwood and landfill disposal. She said that the MCC has proud of this accomplishment and look forward to achieving ISO certification for the plant in the coming year.

She further said that the MCC remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving 100 percent waste processing within the city. With a daily processing capacity of 30-40 tons, the horticulture waste processing plant converts raw horticulture waste into valuable briquettes.

She added that the successful completion of one year of the Horticulture Waste Processing Plant in Chandigarh is a testament to the MCC’s unwavering dedication to sustainable waste management practices. By transforming horticulture waste into a valuable resource, Chandigarh aims to set an exemplary standard for other cities in India and beyond. Furthermore, MC Chandigarh is actively working towards achieving ISO certification for the plant by the coming year.

In the past year, MC Chandigarh has left no opportunity to make the citizens aware of Horticulture Waste processing by arranging student visits to the plant. Guided by MC experts, these bright minds have learned innovative techniques to create a cleaner, greener environment and have set up stalls at Annual Cultural Events like the Rose Festival, Teej, and Chrysanthemum Show. The citizens witnessed the remarkable transformation of horticulture waste into high-calorific-value briquettes, which are then sold as fuel. Embracing waste management, this initiative not only reduces environmental impact but also provides an eco-friendly alternative for fuel consumption.
