*Focus on Rainwater Harvesting System Maintenance*

Focussing on rainwater harvesting system maintenance, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh will launch week long Cleanliness drive of rainwater harvesting systems throughout city from 1st to 7th May, 2025.

While sharing about the initiative, the MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS said that this dedicated week aims to spread awareness and ensure public participation in maintaining cleanliness, with a special focus this year on the cleaning and upkeep of Rainwater Harvesting Systems across the city.

He said that the campaign will be launched under the theme *Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidaari* under Jal Shakti Abhiyaan ‘Catch the rain’.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of sustainable water management, stating, “Maintaining rainwater harvesting systems is not just about water conservation, it’s a civic responsibility. With proper cleaning and regular maintenance, these systems can significantly reduce water wastage and support eco-friendly practices.”

He further said that key Steps for Rainwater Harvesting System Maintenance Include:

• Regular inspection of gutters, downspouts, filters, and storage tanks.

• Removal of debris like leaves and twigs to ensure smooth water flow.

• Draining and scrubbing the storage tank interiors with mild detergent.

• Flushing the system and checking for any leaks or blockages.

• Cleaning all filters and screens, and scheduling maintenance every 2-3 months.

The Commissioner urged citizens of city beautiful to take part in this initiative by inspecting and cleaning their own rainwater harvesting systems. The campaign is a part of the broader goal to make Chandigarh a cleaner and greener city.

In a significant step towards sustainable water management, Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, MC, Chandigarh has called for intensified community participation in water conservation efforts across the city.

Emphasizing the urgent need to tackle water security challenges in the face of climate change during a review meeting held here today, he highlighted the importance of rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and collective responsibility.

The Commissioner underscored the critical role of local governance, particularly involving women and youth, in preserving and managing water resources effectively. He urged citizens to actively engage in conservation practices, reinforcing that community action is essential for building water resilience in urban areas like Chandigarh.

He said that the initiative aligns with the Government of India’s broader commitment to the principle of “Har Boond Anmol – Every Drop Counts”, reaffirming the resolve to ensure a secure and sustainable water future for all. Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, decisive reforms and awareness campaigns are being implemented to empower citizens and strengthen water infrastructure at the grassroots level.

The Municipal Corporation also reiterated its commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices, supporting rainwater harvesting systems in residential and commercial spaces, and encouraging educational institutions to integrate water sustainability programs.

With community support, strong local governance, and policy-backed reforms, Chandigarh aims to set an example in responsible and future-ready water conservation, he added.

The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has taken firm action to reinforce cleanliness and sanitation standards across the city.

Following the orders of MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, in line with the ongoing drive to prevent open burning of waste and dry leaves, the sanitation wing has issued five challans, each amounting to ₹6,701, to offenders at different locations, including:

• PGI Club, Sector-24

• SCO No. 2453, Sector-22/C

• ISBT, Sector-17

• Shed No. 01, HB-232, Sarangpur

• H.No. 3118, Sector-15/D

A total penalty of ₹33,505 has been collected as part of this enforcement activity, carried out strictly as per the directions and orders of the Commissioner, MCC.

*Safaikarmacharis found absent from duty terminated:*

Furthermore, MCC has also terminated the services of six outsourced safaikaramcharis. This step was taken based on reports from field supervisory staff citing prolonged unauthorized absence, indiscipline, and unsatisfactory work performance. Such behavior negatively impacts the overall sanitation work and cannot be tolerated.

The Municipal Corporation remains committed to ensuring a clean and healthy environment for the citizens of Chandigarh. Residents are urged to cooperate with authorities and refrain from practices such as burning waste, which pose a serious threat to public health and the environment.

Strict monitoring and regular drives will continue to be conducted across the city to uphold the highest standards of cleanliness, efficiency, and accountability.

Chandigarh, April 11:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh is going to lay of 800mm i/d M.S. Pipe line from Sector 39 to M.E.S. Chandimandir is in progress to connect the pipeline. Due to this work, road towards Chandigarh Panchkula Highway near Peer Baba Dargah within the boundary of UT Chandigarh will be closed on 12.04.2025 (10.00 a.m.) to 13.04.2025 (10.00 p.m.).General public is requested to take alternate routes and bear with Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.
