*Chandigarh, February 29:-* Taking a significant step towards effective waste management and environmental conservation with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art compost plant and the rejuvenated Amrit Sarovar at Dadu Majra, Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh inaugurated the plant and Amrit Sarovar in the presence of City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, Adviser to Administrator Sh. Rajeev Verma, IAS, Secretary Local Government Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, and Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, along with other councillors, senior officers of the civic body, and prominent residents of Chandigarh.

Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh, commended the team of MC Chandigarh for the swift establishment of the compost plant within a span of five months. He further directed to expedite the clearing of legacy waste, demonstrating the commitment to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment.

He said that the inauguration of the compost plant and the Amrit Sarovar marks significant milestones in the city’s journey towards sustainable waste management and environmental conservation.

The Governor said that in addition to the compost plant, MC Chandigarh is dedicated to constructing a state-of-the-art Integrated Solid Waste Management Plant, designed by the prestigious research institute NEERI. He asked the Commissioner MCC to process the tender for the plant at the earliest so that the construction will commence soon, further enhancing waste management capabilities.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar emphasized the commitment to development in the Dadu Majra area. He said that it is a happy moment for not only the residents of Dadumajra but also for the citizens of city beautiful that no further dumping of waste will take place in this area as all the waste will be processed scientifically. He said that the compost plant has been constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 7 crore. He announced upcoming projects, including the recarpeting of 10 kilometers of roads and the upgradation of Dadu Majra Stadium.

Recognizing the pressing issue of waste management on a national level, the Mayor said that the MC Chandigarh has actively worked to address the problem. In collaboration with the Central Pollution Control Board, the corporation commenced the bioremediation of legacy waste in October 2022, successfully clearing 11 LMT (Lakh Metric Tonnes) of legacy waste. The remaining 2 LMT is set to be cleared by 31st March 2024. However, MC Chandigarh acknowledges the need to cease waste dumping to prevent the continuation of the vicious cycle of legacy waste clearance.

The Mayor, Sh Kuldeep Dhalor further said that addressing the issue of leachate and ensuring the well-being of the community, MC Chandigarh is constructing a 400-meter wall around the dumping ground, accompanied by a continuous drain to prevent leachate from flowing onto the streets. The tender for the drain has been received, and work is expected to commence shortly. Additionally, a sanitary landfill site and a 15-feet wall have been constructed around the dumping ground in the past two years.

Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS said that the compost plant spread over an area of 7,200 square meters, equipped with a 300 TPD windrow, is designed to handle the increasing waste generation in the city. With a commitment to providing effective waste management services and maintaining a clean and garbage-free city, MC Chandigarh has invested in this much-awaited project. The plant will cater to the processing needs of wet waste until the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plant, designed for wet waste through Bio-methanation, becomes operational, she added.

With Swachh Survekshan 2024 on the horizon, the training and capacity experts at MC Chandigarh delivered informative sessions covering six major subject areas: Solid Waste Management, Domestic Hazardous Waste Management, Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act, Disaster Management & Epidemic Response, Government Scheme Linkages, and Mental Health and Well-being.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Municipal Commissioner, said that MC Chandigarh remains dedicated to the professional growth and development of its employees. The organization has dedicated the entire month of February to conducting the Capacity Building and Training Workshop, ensuring comprehensive coverage of essential topics.

She further added that by organizing this capacity building and training workshop, the organization strives to equip its workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality services to the citizens of Chandigarh.

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from approximately 1500 attendees over the course of one week, had the opportunity to interact with the experts and clarify their doubts on each segment. NSS, Panjab University, Chandigarh  Celebrates “Maiden Cleanliness Drive” with Innovative Leaf Collector Machine at P.L Anand Auditorium

Panjab University’s NSS organized a remarkable event, titled “Maiden Cleanliness Drive with Our In-House Developed Leaf Collector Machine,” on February 15, 2024, commemorating the Random Act of Kindness Week. The event unfolded at the P.L Anand Auditorium, Panjab University with Professor Renu Vig, the Honourable Vice Chancellor, presiding over the ceremony as the Chief Guest. Professor Sanjeev Puri, Director of UIET, and Professor Mohsen Rahmani from the School of Science and Technology, Nottingham Trent University, UK, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honours.

The primary objective of the event was to acknowledge and honour the students from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering departments who successfully developed a leaf collector machine. This innovative project was made possible through a grant received from the Department of Science and Technology and Renewable Energy. The dedicated students, Ankit, Mohit, Narayan, Saket, and Saurabh from UIET, were felicitated during the ceremony for their outstanding contribution.

Under the able guidance of Dr. Rajesh Kumar (Mechanical Engineering, UIET), Dr. Gaurav Sapra (Electrical and Electronics Engineering, UIET), and Dr. Preetika Sharma (Electrical and Electronics Engineering, UIET), the students’ efforts resulted in the creation of a cutting-edge leaf collector machine.

Dr. Praveen Goyal, NSS Coordinator at Panjab University, extended a gracious welcome to the dignitaries present. Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig lauded the initiative spearheaded by Dr. Parveen Goyal, NSS Coordinator, PU, applauding the conceptualization of using the developed machine to foster a cleaner and greener campus. Prof. Vig also warmly welcomed Prof. Rahmani, an esteemed guest currently visiting Panjab University, India, expressing anticipation for collaboration on a project with PU and PGIMER under the esteemed Royal Society Yusuf Hamied Fellowship.

Professor Sanjeev Puri, Director UIET, applauded the remarkable achievement of UIET students and acknowledged the efforts of the NSS team for putting up an excellent show.

Dr. Gaurav Sapra shared illuminating insights into the origin of the leaf collector machine, inspired by the observation of leaves accumulating on roadsides, particularly during autumn. The objective was twofold: to design a machine that not only automated the leaf collection process but also included a mechanism for transforming the collected leaves into compost. Dr. Sapra provided detailed information, encouraging and motivating students to tackle real-world problems through innovative solutions. The event concluded on a vibrant note with cultural dance performances featuring Haryanvi, Himachali, and Punjabi dances by the NSS team, adding a celebratory touch to the memorable evening.

Nottingham Trent University (NTU), UK to strengthen collaborations with PU- Signed MoUs

An international delegation comprising Professor Edward Peck, Vice-Chancellor and President, ⁠Professor Cillian Ryan, Pro Vice-Chancellor International, Professor Neil Mansfield -Executive Dean-Research and International Reputation, Mr Stephen Williams, Director, NTU Global, Professor Mohsen Rahmani, Department of Engineering, School of Science and Technology, Ms.VidhiSahae, Senior Global Partnerships Manager, from Nottingham Trent University (NTU) United Kingdom (UK) visited Panjab University (PU) on February 13, 2024.  The delegation met with the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Professor RenuVigto discuss current and future collaborative initiatives under the partnership between PU and NTU.

After formal introduction, the existing MoU between PU and NTU was renewedfor a term of another five years.  The focus of this MoU shall be on the mutual exchange of information on course development and teaching methods, development of collaborative courses leading to awards of NTU, exchange and mobility of staff and students, development of joint research projects, organizing joint lectures and seminars etc.

AProgression Agreement with University Institute of Legal Studieswas also signed. Under this Agreement, PU students who have successfully completed the PU course, be eligible to apply to Progress onto the start of the relevant NTU course on the terms set out in the Progression Agreement.All students who progress directly from the PU Course to the NTU Course at Nottingham Law Schoolwill receive a flat rate discount of 3000/- Pounds off the published Tuition Fees for the first year of study at NTU.

Professor Sanjeev Puri, Director, University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) highlighted the outcomes of sponsored research projects, and future plans to be achieved under the collaboration between PU and NTU. He shared that 13 papers were published, two bilateral visits were arranged and four collaborative events were organized under collaborative projects.

Professor Edward Peck said ‘It was a pleasure to be back at Panjab University again to celebrate the depth and impact of our partnership over the last eight years and to renew our collaboration which will take us to an even more exciting future.’ Professor Neil Mansfield confirmed that NTU would be delighted to support 6 dual PhD students where research will be conducted on both the institutions.

Professor Renu Vig emphasized the need for international collaborations and their impact on university ranking at the international level. The possibilities of dual Ph.D. degree and postgraduate degrees in various disciplines and collaboration in relevant areas of research and development were also discussed.

A special symbolic kite dedicated to the pride of the city, Safaimitras, was also part of the event. It was hand-painted by the SHGs. This gesture recognized the invaluable contribution of Safaimitras in keeping the city clean and highlighted their role in maintaining the cleanliness of Chandigarh.

MX Kajal Mangalmukhi, Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission, also graced the occasion and celebrated Swachh Basant Utsav while spreading the message of Swachhata.

The use of eco-friendly kite strings further highlighted the event’s focus on sustainable practices and the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ (RRR) principle.

Employing a zero-waste approach, the event underscored the crucial importance of sustainability. It aimed to inspire citizens to embrace cleanliness and environmentally conscious practices for the betterment of the community and the environment as a whole. The event also featured kite-shaped floral topiaries, adding to its visual appeal.

Incorporating the spirit of peace, prosperity, and positive energy, the event radiated the ‘yellow color’ element throughout the decor and attire, setting a vibrant and cheerful ambiance. The yellow color symbolizes hope, optimism, and the desire for a brighter and cleaner future.

*MCC conducts Income Tax-TDS awareness seminar*

Chandigarh, February 09:- The Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, TDS range, Chandigarh in coordination with Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has conducted an Income Tax-TDS/TCS awareness programme including introduction of new provisions. The seminar was carried out at the conference hall, 6th floor, MCC building, Sector 17, Chandigarh.

Sh. Surinder Meena, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, TDS range Chandigarh addressed the seminar, which was attended by all DDOs and officers/officials of responsible for TDS/TCS in MCC. Sh. Jasvir Singh Saini, Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS),  Smt. Saroj Bala, Income Tax Officer were also present during the seminar.

The seminar was very informative and advisable in respect of new provisions of TDS/TCS.

Enlightening Discourse on Fundamental Rights at UILS

Renowned senior advocate, Mr. Saurabh Kirpal, graced the occasion with his erudition on the theme, “Role of Courts in Interpreting Fundamental Rights.” The vibrant session unfolded into an interactive symphony between Mr. Kirpal and the eager students, who hung on to every word with rapt attention. Prof Shruti Bedi, Director UILS and Prof. Rattan Singh spearheaded the session which was moderated by Swastik Singh and Agastya. Adding a delightful dimension to the event, a book signing session ensued, allowing students to engage directly with Mr. Kirpal and witness firsthand the embodiment of legal wisdom. UILS takes pride in fostering such dialogues that elevate the understanding of law amongst the legal fraternity.
