The Centre for Leadership & Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University Chandigarh under the aegis of (Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching) PMMMNMTT, MHRD, Govt of India is organizing 7 days’ national workshop from May 20-26, 2019 on Qualitative Research Methods in Social Sciences with the theme Equity and Social Justice at ICSSR Hall, Panjab University. The keynote speaker will be Prof. Padma M. Sarangapani from Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai and the inaugural session will be chaired by Prof. Krishna Kumar, Padma Shri and former Director NCERT, New Delhi. Prof. Devinder Singh, Secretary to Vice Chancellor, P.U. Chandigarh will be the Chief Guest for the inaugural session on May 20, 2019. The workshop will bring together the educationists, academicians and researchers from eminent institutions across the length and breadth of the country. The highlight of the workshop is to draw upon the traditions of qualitative research methods catering to the purpose of equity and social justice. The objective is to equip the researchers in developing a deep understanding about the epistemological and methodological framework of qualitative research designs along with providing participants a holistic perspective about current social issues.

Rasmeet Singh, 2nd year student of B.E (Chemical) at Dr. S. S. Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology Panjab University, Chandigarh (SSBUICET) has been appointed as a visiting fellow in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, Sydney, Australia for the period of two months to participate in an Australian research project w.e.f 2nd June, 2019. Its first such case of UICET.
Rasmeet is pursuing his research work along with his bachelor’s degree under the supervision of Dr. Sanjeev Gautam, Asst. Prof., Advanced Functional Materials Lab, Dr. SSBUICET, Panjab University. Generally, under graduate students in UICET starts working on some research projects, if they are interested for higher studies after their bachelor’s degree.
He has been appointed to conduct research on “Designing and Development of pretreatment Filtration System for Water and Wastewater” at University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, Australia.
Dr. Sanjeev Gautam has started a hydrogen based fuel cell and hydrogen storage research along with other energy harvesting resources like photovoltaics, perovskite solar cells and thermoelectric. Mr. Rasmeet is currently working on the development of hybrid graphene compounds for hydrogen storage properties and wastewater purification.

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics of Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital organized Creative Writing Competition’ to mark the occasion of World Orthodontic Health Day (WOHD) on 15th may. Every year 15th may is celebrated as WOHD to marks the signing of the World Federation of Orthodontist’s (WFO) charter in 1995 during the 4th International Orthodontic Congress® in San Francisco. World Orthodontic Health Day is designed to tie the WFO’s past and future together.
The winner and consolation prize winner of the Creative Writing Competition will now be provided free of Cost (No Hospital charges) and immediate orthodontic treatment respectively. The consolation prize winners will be provided immediate orthodontic treatment. It is pertinent to mention that for orthodontic treatment there is a long waiting list and the above prize winner will be immediately taken for treatment without waiting. The department of orthodontics has last year also conducted the Painting competition to mark the occasion of World Orthodontic Health Day (WOHD). The department plan to conduct this kind of competition every year on 15th May so as to make people aware about orthodontic Health.

Shiyana, a UGC – Research Fellowship in Sciences for meritorious students (RFSMS) fellow pursuing PhD under the supervision of Prof. Kanwaljit Chopra, Chairperson, University Institute Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), and Professor, Pharmacology Division, UIPS, Panjab University has brought laurels to the name of the University. She was awarded the prestigious European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Short Term Fellowship (€ 6252.00) for a period of 3 months from 15 January to 15 April 2019 to conduct circadian research at the Department of Neurohumoral Regulations, Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, Czech Republic. The fellowship included subsistence and travel allowance.
She studied the impact of constant artificial light and food intake in the night time on our biological clock in rat brain and ileum. Her research work elucidated the importance of minimizing the exposure to artificial light in the night time and restricting the food intake during the daytime for our good health.

IAS Centre, Panjab University conducted mock interviews for the candidates of PCS Executive and Assistant Commandant, Central Armed Police Forces on 15th May. The panellists for the mock interviews comprised of Lt. Gen. PK Grover, former Chief Western Command, Dr. Krishan Mohan, former Home Secretary, Haryana, Prof. Anil Monga, Prof. Parmjit Kaur, Director, IAS Centre and Dr. Shruti Bedi, Coordinator, IAS Centre.
The candidates were suitably interviewed and grilled for the upcoming interviews. The were asked questions on the situation existing in Punjab and the issues confronting the bureaucracy in the State. The candidates for the Police Forces were questioned about the role of police and on the reasons of the problems being faced by the police forces.
Each candidate was interviewed for at least half an hour. They were also give feedback as to how to improve their presentation and answers. The candidates greatly benefited from the session. These interviews being conducted by the IAS Centre, Panjab University is the second in the series.
