*Chandigarh, March 12:-* In an effort to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly space for non-motorized traffic, promote healthy food options and reduce waste, Smart City initiated the project of Zero Waste Modern Food Street in sector 15, Chandigarh.

CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, formally started the construction work of the Zero Waste Modern Food Street in Sector 15, Chandigarh in the presence of Anisha Shrivastav IAS, ACEO Smart City, Sh. Saurabh Joshi, area councilor and prominent persons of the local area.

While addressing the gathering, Ms Mitra said that the Zero Waste Modern Food Street in Sector 15 will serve as a model for sustainable urban development. It will not only provide a vibrant and appealing space for residents and visitors but also promote eco-friendly practices and healthy food choices.

She further highlighted that the Zero Waste Modern Food Street will enhance the overall aesthetics of Sector 15 and contributes to the well-being of the community. She urged residents and visitors to support this initiative and help maintain a zero-waste environment. She added that some of the highlights of the rejuvenated food street will be zero plastic, differently abled friendly and only for non motorized transport.

Ms Mitra added that the project, funded by the National Health Mission of the Government of India with a budget provisions of Rs. 117.35 Lacs includes various notable features such as reconstructed flooring, benches with sheds, display boards with specific signages, a dedicated cycle track, ornamental lights, landscaping work, enhanced security with CCTV cameras, aesthetically pleasing bollards, twin dustbins for efficient waste management, and a Water ATM for public convenience.

Area Councillor Sh Saurabh Joshi emphasized on the importance of collaboration and community engagement in the project’s success. He said that the Smart City works closely  with residents, local businesses, and government agencies to ensure that the Zero Waste Modern Food Street meets the needs and aspirations of the community.

ACEO Smart City Ms Shrivastav said that construction of the Zero Waste Modern Food Street will be completed within the next six months. Once finished, it will stand as a shining example of sustainable urban development, showcasing Chandigarh’s dedication to creating a greener future, she added.

*Mayor launches “Mayor Aapke Dwar” programme to hear people’s grievances*

*Chandigarh, March 12:-* Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, Mayor, Chandigarh today launched “ Mayor Aapke Dwar” programme to reach out to the local residents to hear MC Chandigarh related grievances.

The programme was launched at Indra Colony, Manimajra here today evening in the presence of Smt. Suman Sharma, area councilor, other councilors and senior officers of MC, Chandigarh. Representatives from various area level federations, resident welfare associations and local residents were present during the programme.

While addressing the local residents at the Community Centre, Indra Colony, the Mayor said that the MC Chandigarh would make proper arrangement to ensure that benefits of schemes and programmes to reach at the right beneficiaries including providing and upgradation of basic amenities to the citizens of City Beautiful.

He said that the MC Chandigarh would make necessary changes in order to make the services more beneficial for the people. He said that the MCC will organize such type of “Mayor Aapke Dwar” programmes to hear the people’s grievances and redress them at the local level and noted down the grievances, which requires time and budget to be processed.

He said that now people will not have to run after the offices for getting their work done but the officials will themselves reach to them and solve their complaints. He said that works which can not be solved on time for them a timeline should be fixed and the concerned person should be informed on the phone.

The Mayor said that information regarding the presence of the officials in the respective areas will be shared by different mediums of communications so that a maximum number of people can take its advantage. He said that apart from solving the complaints of the people, the officials will also apprise the citizens regarding various schemes and new developments of the MC Chandigarh and also tell them the ways as to how they can take its benefits.

Local residents raised their grievances during the programme including drinking water problem, door to door waste collection, pruning of trees, providing of paver blocks, maintenance of parks, recarpeting of internal roads and problem of haphazard parking of vehicles in the colony. The concerned officers noted down the complaints and assured the citizens for their early solution.

During this work there will be no water supply in evening time in the sector 1 to 12 through Sector 4, Sector 19, Sector 20 A and B, Sector 21-B, Sector 26 to 30, Bapudham Colony, Indl Area Ph-I, and whole area of Manimajra will be as under:-

*Delegation of IAS officers visits best projects of MCC*

*Chandigarh, March 8:-* A delegation of 16 IAS Officers, led by Mr.D.Varma, IAS, visited Chandigarh to study Municipal Corporation’s best practices in waste management. 

The team toured the Pink MRF, observed waste segregation, and visited the newly constructed state-of-the-art Composting Plant with a capacity of 300 TPD at Dadumajra. They explored the pre-sorting area, trommels for sifting dry waste from wet, and sheds for windrow composting.

Additionally, the delegates visited  Horticulture Waste Plant to learn about the mechanism that transforms waste into valuable resources. Insights were gained into the C&D waste plant producing tiles, bricks, and pavers.

The Municipal Corporation was honored to have hosted the delegates and shared valuable insights.

*MCC organizes hands-on training session on home composting for college students*

*Chandigarh, March 7:-* Emphasizing the foundational importance of education and its growth within the community, the Municipal Corporation has organized a special hands-on training session on home composting for college students at DAV College, Sector-10, in collaboration with trained Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

With a dedication towards sustainable development, the MCC actively participates in initiatives that promote education, environmental awareness, and community empowerment. Additionally, students shared their experiences on composting with their fellow students. This interactive session equipped students with practical knowledge and skills to incorporate composting practices into their daily lives, fostering environmental responsibility from an early age. Also, the students of the Botany Department, DAV10 College, participated enthusiastically in the session and also shared their insights and queries with the MC team and fellow students.

This initiative aims to raise awareness about composting among citizens, empowering individuals and communities to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to the overall well-being of the environment. The SHG team also raises awareness about four types of Waste Segregation and the negative consequences of Single-Use plastic, as well as the adoption of RRR.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, the MC Commissioner, said that education is the key to empowering individuals and communities towards sustainable development. MC Chandigarh takes pride in prioritizing environmental awareness and community engagement. Through initiatives like the hands-on training session on home composting, the goal is to equip young students with practical knowledge and skills that foster a sense of environmental responsibility from an early age. The SHG-trained team also creates awareness of Waste Segregation, the adoption of RRR, and the ill effects of Single-use plastic.

She further stated that by collaborating with trained Self-Help Groups under expert supervision, the MCC is creating a greener and more prosperous future for the community. MC Chandigarh remains committed to promoting education at all levels and will continue to collaborate with various stakeholders to create a sustainable and inclusive learning environment.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar honored all women with an appreciation certificate in the presence of area councillor Smt. Prem Lata and other councillors, along with senior officials of MC Chandigarh. The event served as a platform to acknowledge their relentless efforts and outstanding commitment to the betterment of the community.

She highlighted the significant progress made, moving from the 66th position in Swacch Sarvekshan 2021 to the 11th position in Swacch Sarvekshan 2023 and receiving the ‘Safaimitra Surakshit’ title from Her Excellency, the Honorable President of India, Smt. Draupadi Murmu. This project is expected to further improve the city’s ranking in the coming years.

Mayor starts renovation work of Janj Ghar Sector 23*

*Chandigarh, March 5:-* Aiming to enhance the infrastructure and facilities of the Janj Ghar at Sector 23, City Mayor Kuldeep Kumar has started the renovation work at a cost of Rs. 2 crores in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Municipal Commissioner, Sh. Daman Preet Singh, area councilor, other councilors, officers of MCC and prominent persons of the area.

While addressing the gathering, the Mayor said that the civil work will focus on revamping the flooring in the main dining hall, corridors, rooms, and kitchen area. Additionally, attached washrooms will be constructed in consultation with Architect to improve convenience for the general public. Water-proofing treatment will be applied to the roof and toilet block, and the main hall will be made echo-proof with improved aesthetics. An open kitchen will also be constructed for the use of the general public and the existing toilets will undergo renovation.

He said that new plumbing fixtures will be provided, as well as constructing inspection chambers and manholes to ensure proper disposal of grey water. The electrical work will include rewiring, installation of light fixtures, ceiling fans, and split AC units to enhance the overall electrical infrastructure and functionality of Janj Ghar.

The Mayor further said that the Janj Ghar holds immense importance as a community center, and it is the duty of MCC to ensure that it offers the best facilities and amenities to residents. This renovation project will not only improve the infrastructure but also enhance the overall experience for visitors.

Earlier, the area councilor Sh. Daman Preet Singh welcomed the Mayor and other dignitaries in the programme. He said that the MCC has carefully planned the renovation work to address the needs of the public. The aim of this project is to create a modern and accessible space for everyone to enjoy. This project shall be completed by January 2025, he added.

MCC to speed up ABC programme in city*

*City Mayor visits ABC Centre Raipur Kalan; takes stock of progress*

*Chandigarh, March 5:-* Having capacity of 310 kennels at Animal Birth Control Centre, Raipur Kalan, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has planned to speed up the sterilization of dogs in city.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar accompanied by Mrs. Isha Kamboj, Joint Commissioner and Medical Officer of Health alongwith concerned Health Supervisor visited the ABC centre at Raipur Kalan today evening to take stock of progress work.

The concerned officers apprised the Mayor that the kennel capacity is 310 and centre has a dog care unit also where injured canines are treated. It has a laboratory, a hospital and an operation theatre. Besides sterilization, vaccination of feral dogs is also carried out. 

While speaking on the occasion, the city Mayor said that the residents of Chandigarh will soon get relief from the stray dog menace as the concerned staff has been asked to speed up the ABC programme, which will help in controlling the population of stray dogs. He said that the Municipal Corporation has sufficient vehicles to pick up stray dogs and sterilize them in the ABC centres. Also, another centre may be built having capacity of 1000 dogs.

The Mayor also visited the Gaushala alongwith the team and took stock of the cattle, feed and their wellbeing.

Rajeev Verma, IAS, Secretary Local Government Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, and Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Ms. Purva Garg, IAS, Secretary, Education, Padamshri Dr. Rajendra Badwe, former Director, Tata Memorial centre, Mumbai, Dr. Ashish Gulia, Director, Homi Bhabha cancer hospital and research centre, Punjab, Sh. The Governor commended the effort of MC Chandigarh for organizing an awareness and screening camp for its employees and families. He said that I got to know that the hospital has not only screening the employees of Municipal Corporation but also screening the employees of Chandigarh Administration.

He said that MC Chandigarh is doing highly appreciable work towards well-being of its employees. He said that the objective of the Cancer Screening Camp is to determine the screening of preventable cancers, including oral, breast, and cervix cancer, as well as Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and respiratory diseases among employees.

The Governor further said that in the modern era, chronic diseases, particularly NCDs, pose significant global health challenges. The epidemic of NCDs has severe health consequences for individuals, families, and communities. Preventing and controlling these diseases are crucial development imperatives for the 21st century.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar said that the camp aims to identify risk factors and devise strategies to bring about a healthy change in lifestyle. During the camp, male employees will undergo screenings such as height/weight measurement, BMI calculation, blood pressure measurement, oral cavity screening, and random blood sugar (RBS) testing using a glucometer. Female employees will also receive breast and cervix cancer screenings in addition to the aforementioned tests.

He said that an awareness session on screening and early diagnosis of common cancers has been conducted for all the employees. The session aimd to increase awareness of risk factors, methods of early detection, and cancer prevention etc. Participants who were diagnosed with precancerous or cancerous conditions will be referred to the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre for further diagnostic evaluation and treatment.

Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, said that the Corporation is committed to the well-being of its employees and families. With this screening health camp, MC Chandigarh aims to foster a culture of healthy living and health promotion within the larger society.

She further said that the objectives of the Cancer Screening Camp are early detection, preventive education, disease-specific awareness, promotion of healthy behaviors, screening for high-risk groups, and health promotion. MC Chandigarh is dedicated to creating a culture of health and well-being within the community, encouraging individuals to take an active role in managing their health, she added.

The Cancer Screening Camp accommodated a team of healthcare professionals to conduct screenings for approximately 200 individuals per camp. Additionally, a comprehensive health education program has been provided, focusing on the hazards of tobacco, prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases, and awareness about cancers of the oral cavity, cervix, breast, and prostate for all MCC employees and family members.
