*MCC organizes special workshop for students on World Paper Bag Day*
*Chandigarh, July 12:-* In a bid to raise awareness about the harmful impacts of single-use plastic bags and promote environmentally friendly alternatives, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, under the “Safai Apnao Bimaari Bhagao” campaign, organized a special workshop on making paper bags in collaboration with the Prasanchetas Foundation by recycling newspapers/papers for students on World Paper Bag Day at GMSSS, Sector 37 B.
The MC team motivated students to join the initiative to reduce plastic bag usage and promote sustainable practices in the city. The MCC also distributed appreciation certificates to the participants and encouraged them to be a Swachhata Champion and urge their friends and family to embrace sustainable options such as cloth, jute, or paper bags while shopping.
While speaking about the initiative, MC Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, highlighted the public interest in using paper bags, as they are eco-friendly, budget-friendly, and reusable, decomposing naturally without harming the environment. She emphasized that Municipal Corporation is making all efforts by organizing such workshops and various other activities citywide to raise awareness about the pollution caused by plastic and the threat it poses to the environment.
She further said that the MCC has been implementing various initiatives to reduce plastic waste, including providing E-carts for compostable bags at subsidized prices at Mandi, Sector 26, and Apni Mandi, as part of the “Safai Apnao Bimaari Bhagao” campaign. She also mentioned that extensive challans have been issued, and substantial fines have been imposed on violators using single-use plastic bags since July 1st. A total of 525 challans have been issued, and 108 kgs of single-use plastic have been confiscated from July 1st to 12th.
