*Chandigarh, June 7:-* The Municipal Corporation celebrated its foundation day at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18, on Friday. Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, City Mayor, was the chief guest, while Ms. Anindita Mitra, Commissioner, was the Guest of Honour at a cultural programme organised by employees of the Corporation.

Addressing the audience, the Mayor said the role and responsibilities of the MC Chandigarh had increased manifold since its inception on May 24, 1994. He appreciated the officers and all employees of MC Chandigarh for their remarkable contribution towards rendering service to provide basic amenities to the citizens of city beautiful besides spreading cultural values among masses through these type of cultural programmes.

The employees performed Rang Rangeela Bharat, Giddha & Bhangra, Jhoomer, shammi and fashion show during the event.

The Commissioner, meanwhile, thanked the Mayor, councilors, officers and MCC employees for organizing the event, which saw employees perform Bhangra, Giddha and skit on ‘Swachhata ke Chaar Rang’. She congratulated all the employees for the conducting successful cultural bonanza.

*Chandigarh, June 6:-* Aiming to provide affordable items to those in need while promoting the concept of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR), the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) has opened its eighth ‘One Rupee Store’ at the Community Centre, Daddumajra colony. This new store inauguration celebrates the successful completion of one year of the permanent RRR Centre in Sector 17 and the Rupee Store initiative, which together promote sustainability and inclusivity under the ‘Swachhata Ki Mohar’ program.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar in the presence of Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, inaugurated the new store in the presence of area councilors, senior MCC officials, and prominent members of the ward.

Speaking on the occasion, City Mayor Kuldeep Kumar said that the MCC’s permanent RRR Center in Sector 17 has received an overwhelming response from citizens over the past year, enabling the establishment of this new Rupee Store. The aim of the Rupee Store is to provide affordable access to a variety of items, such as books, electronics, clothing, crockery, kitchenware, toys, and bed sheets, all priced at just Rs. 1 per item, while promoting the RRR concept.

He further shared that the Sector 17 RRR Center collected a total of 54,398 donated items from June 2023 to May 2024, including 43,739 clothes, 6,277 books, 1,782 footwear, and 2,600 other items like crockery, toys, electronics, bags, home décor, and furniture. After cleaning, repairing, and refurbishing these donated items, the MCC is committed to organizing more such one-rupee stores in different areas and wards of the city.

Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS expressed gratitude to the citizens of the Tricity for their overwhelming response and support. She noted that this is the eighth successful one-rupee store, and the MCC is committed to establishing more such stores throughout the city to serve the community. The establishment of this store is a testament to the MCC’s efforts towards creating sustainable and inclusive practices that benefit citizens from all walks of life.

Since 2023, the MCC has embarked on a journey to promote sustainable behavior and practices among its citizens. As part of this initiative, seven one-rupee stores have already been successfully organized in Dhanas, Manimajra, Maloya, Sunder Nagar, Ramdarbar, a special store for Safaimitras, and Sector-56. These stores have collectively sold approximately more than 15,000 items.

The Commissioner emphasized that this initiative aims to protect and preserve the environment, instilling a pro-planet behavioral change through individual action in daily life. The MCC is reaffirming its dedication to sustainability and working towards a future where emphasis is placed on resourceful utilization, mindful consumption, and waste reduction. By embracing the principles of RRR, the Corporation is on a mission to create a Garbage Free City that is more resilient, equitable, and sustainable for generations to come.

*Chandigarh, June 5:-* To encourage the community to keep their surroundings green, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) launched a new initiative by distributing Tulsi (Basil) plants at the Rose Horticulture Nursery in Sector 23. This initiative aims to encourage citizens to purchase and plant trees from the MCC nursery at subsidized prices.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar and Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS distributed Tulsi plants to the citizens of the city beautiful to mark World Environment Day under the “Swachhata Ki Mohar” initiative.

The Mayor said that the Municipal Corporation has demonstrated its strong commitment to enhancing the city’s green cover by successfully exceeding its tree and shrub plantation targets for the financial year 2023-24. The MCC had set a target of planting 54,398 plants, including 6,025 trees and 48,370 shrubs, but exceeded this target by planting a total of 72,864 plants, including 6,784 trees and 66,080 shrubs across the city.

He further added that for the upcoming financial year 2024-25, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has set an even more ambitious target of planting 60,460 plants citywide, including both trees and shrubs. The plantation drive will span various sectors, parks, green belts, community centers, rehabilitation colonies, and other key locations around Chandigarh.

Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS emphasized that it is high time we take proactive measures to save our environment and land for the future. She said that each citizen must take ownership of attaining a zero-waste lifestyle by segregating waste properly, conserving water, adopting home composting, eliminating single-use plastics, and encouraging the entire community to do the same.

Earlier, the Mayor and Commissioner also planted saplings of trees and shrubs at Sector 23 Park, motivating citizens to participate in the greening efforts.

*Chandigarh, June 4:-* Aiming to keep the  Choe’s (natural water channel) clean and ensure uninterrupted water flow, thus protecting against floods and preserving the environment, the Municipal Corporation conducted an awareness drive for the citizens residing near the Sukhna Choe.

Under  “Swachhata ki Mohar” intitaive , and marking the upcoming World Environment Day on June 5th, the Municipal Corporation today conducted a door-to-door awareness drive at EWS Flats, Bapu Dham, and Shastri Nagar, located near the Sukhna Choe. The citizens were educated about solid waste management, including the importance of waste segregation, and the menace of single-use plastics, as well as the harmful effects of littering near the Choe by the MC team.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Municipal Commissioner said that Keeping the natural water channels clean and protecting the environment is of utmost importance. Through this awareness drive and the upcoming mega cleaning drive conciding on World Environment Day on June 5 at the Sukhna Choe, we aim to engage the citizens and foster a sense of collective responsibility towards maintaining the ecological balance of the city. She urged all residents to participate in these efforts and contribute to making Chandigarh cleaner, greener, and happier.

*Municipal Corporation achieves record-breaking Property Tax collection ever, in history of Chandigarh*

*Chandigarh, June 3:-* The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has achieved a remarkable milestone, recording its highest-ever annual property tax collection, in the fiscal year 2024-25.

The total property tax collected during this period stands at ₹52.24 crore, a 21% increase compared to the previous year’s collection of ₹43.21 crore (2023-24), and significantly higher than the collections in the preceding years: ₹46.57 crore (2022-23), ₹24.84 crore (2021-22), ₹0.23 crore (2020-21), and ₹31.55 crore (2019-20). This achievement underscores the MCC’s unwavering commitment to efficient revenue generation and effective tax administration.

The increased tax collection can be attributed to several strategic initiatives undertaken by the MCC, including:

1. Enhanced taxpayer outreach and awareness campaigns to encourage prompt tax payments and avail the statutory rebate offered.

2. Streamlining of the tax assessment and collection processes for improved efficiency.

3. Improved coordination with relevant government agencies and departments.

While sharing about this achievement, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, the Municipal Commissioner said that this is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the tax collection team, as well as the civic responsibility demonstrated by the residents and businesses of the city.

The record-breaking property tax collection will enable the Municipal Corporation to further strengthen the city’s infrastructure, improve public services, and invest in the overall development of Chandigarh, added the Commissioner. She said that the MCC is committed to using these resources judiciously and transparently to benefit the citizens of city beautiful.

*Municipal Corporation takes another step to improve Sanitary Waste Management with new initiatives*

*Chandigarh, May 27:-* In a bid to improve civic services and improve sanitary waste management, MC Chandigarh has equipped its garbage collection vehicles with large, bright red bags for the collection of segregated sanitary waste. The bags were distributed to the staff today to be attached to the garbage collection vans. This initiative will be rolled out citywide on International Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed on May 28, 2024.

The MC team will also raise awareness among citizens about the importance of waste segregation through specially created pamphlets on sanitary waste management. Garbage collectors have received training to educate citizens about proper waste disposal practices. In addition to the red bags for sanitary waste, the garbage collection vans will soon be equipped with black bags for hazardous household waste.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, the MC Commissioner said “As the Municipal Corporation aims for 100% waste segregation at the source, this new system will make it easier for citizens to dispose of sanitary and hazardous waste properly. The red and black bags will be clearly visible on the garbage collection vehicles, serving as a visual cue to segregate waste effectively. This ensures the safety and health of sanitation workers and helps them process the waste with care.”

The Commissioner also stated that distributing awareness pamphlets on sanitary waste management will ensure that citizens are properly informed. The pamphlets include information on types of sanitary waste, proper disposal methods, and how to segregate it from dry and wet waste. They also outline the penalties for not following the segregation norms.

She further emphasized, “Segregation of waste is crucial for the efficient functioning of the city’s solid waste processing units. We believe that this new initiative, along with our outreach to citizens, will significantly contribute to achieving our goal of 100% waste segregation in Chandigarh.”

With the collaborative efforts and hard work of citizens, Safaimitras, and garbage collectors, dry and wet waste is being collected accurately and processed properly at the Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).

MC Chandigarh provides mist sprinklers at Gaushala sector 25 protecting cattle from summer heat*

*Chandigarh, May 26:-* As daily temperatures begin to increase, foreshadowing the prolonged hot weather and heat stress events of the summer, the MC Chandigarh with a helping hand of city beautiful has provided facilities at Gaushalas to protect cattle from the summer heat.

The city resident of sector 15, Mrs. Neera Thapar has come forward to get the mist sprinklers installed at 200 sq.ft. area at Gaushala, sector 25.

Appriciating this help to the Gauwansh at Gaushala, the MC Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra said that the incoming heat can negatively affect animal growth and animal welfare, but taking these management precautions can help to reduce the impacts of anticipated and extreme weather conditions.

She said that Cool, clean drinking water has been provided to help cattle thermoregulate in severe temperatures.

*Municipal Corporation urges citizens to pay property tax on or before 31st May, to avail statutory rebate*

*Gives option of paying garbage cess along with property tax and avail two month rebate by depositing  bill in advance, by 31st May*

*Chandigarh, May 26:-* The Municipal Corporation urged citizens to pay their property tax within the rebate period which ends on May 31, after which, a 25% penalty and interest at 12% per annum will be levied on the due tax from the date of issue of the tax bill to the date of actual payment.

MC Commissioner, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS appealed to all the citizens of city beautiful that though payment of garbage cess with property tax, is optional, if citizens pay both, by 31.05.2024, they can avail the benefits of statutory rebates.  She also clarified that after 31st May, the rebate is not applicable and additional 25% penalty is imposed on the annual property tax along with 12% interest on the whole pending dues.

She further said that property tax bills may also be downloaded from the following links:

She said that the MCC has distributed total 108372 property tax bills through post office and through special messenger to the residential properties and non residential properties.

The Commissioner clarified that  Statutory rebate of 20% rebate on annual property tax for residential properties and 10% on the rest of the properties can be availed if whole amount is paid by 31st May.

Wrt Garbage cess, She further clarified that if advance payment for whole year is deposited, user fee for only 10 months is charged instead of 12 months. Similarly for advance payment of 6 months user fee is charged for 5 and a half month.

The Commissioner said that a user also has an option to deposit only the property tax dues and not the garbage fee as per his/her own will to avail the benefit of statutory rebate of property tax only. In such a case rebate of user fee won’t be granted however appropriate rebate on property tax shall be granted. In case of any other clarification or issue, office of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, New Deluxe Building, Sector 17 E, Chandigarh may be visited on working days from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM or may reach the authorities for clarity and resolution of grievance if any.
