PU lost one of its iconic scientists

Chandigarh October 6, 2019

 Panjab University is sad with the demise of one of its iconic and world renowned scientist Prof.Dharam Vir Singh Jain in the early hours of Sunday, 6th October 2019 in PGI.
       

Prof. Jain was born in Hansi, in erstwhile Punjab on 16th June 1933. He obtained B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. in Chemistry from University of Delhi, M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics (1954-58) from University of Southern California, USA. Prof. D V S Jain and Prof. S. V. Kessar were Ph.D. scholars at University of Southern California at the same time. He returned to India in 1958 and joined as Lecturer, University of Delhi, moved to PU as Reader (1963), subsequently became Professor in Department of Chemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh. He served as Director, Regional sophisticated Instrumentation Centre (1985-87 & 1992-95) and INSA senior scientist (1996-2001). He was serving as Professor Emeritus and INSA Honorary Scientist at Chemistry Department, Panjab University.


        Prof.D.V.S. Jain worked in several areas of physical and theoretical chemistry. His major scientific contributions included understanding the thermodynamic and transport properties of binary mixtures of short chain n-alkanes. He published over 150 research papers in international journals, written 7 books and edited 2 books. He was member of Editorial boards of number of journals and publication committee of the IUPAC. He supervised 24 Ph.D. scholars and over 50 M.Sc./M.Phil.


        Prof. Jain was recipient of S.R.Patil Award, J.C.Ghosh Award, K.S.G. Doss Award, R. P.Mitra Award, Silver medal of CRSI, Platinum Jubilee Lecture of ISCA and Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary lecture of INSA. He was Fellow of all the three
national  Science Academies of India.  As Fellow of Indian National Science Academy , he served as its Editor of Publications (1987-90), and its Secretary-1994-96.


        Prof. Jain donated a sum of Rs. 50 lakhs to set up Smt. PremLata Jain and Prof. D.V.S. Jain Research Foundation at Department of Chemistry, Panjab University. This foundation has been created for the promotion of scientific research in Panjab University. Prof. Jain was an able administrator and served as a nominated member of the  Panjab University Senate  from 2012-2019. He also co-authored (with Dr V K Anand) the biography of the Panjab University titled ‘The Flight of Phoenix’ in the commemorative 125th Birth year of the University.
       

With the passing away of Prof. D V S Jain, the nation has lost an eminent scientist.

MCC organises Kirtan Samagam at Khudda Ali Sher

Chandigarh, October 6:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has organised 1st Kirtan Samagam to commemorate 550th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji at stadium, Khudda Ali Sher last evening.

The Kirtan was started at 7pm and concluded at 11 pm with Guru Ka Langar. Sh. Hardeep Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the implementation committee welcomed the prominent Kirtan Jathas including Bhai Kamaljit Singh ji and Bhai Gurjinder Singh ji from Sri Darbar Sahib, Golden Temple, Amritsar and Bhai Darshan Singh ji from village Khudda Ali Sher who graced the occasion as special kirtniye.

After Kirtan Samagam the MCC distributed cloth bags to the devotees requesting them to avoid plastic bags and single use plastic items. In addition to that saplings of medicinal and fruit bearing trees were also distributed among devotees. The MCC has decided to distribute 550 saplings to commemorate the 550th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji during the Kirtan Darbars being organised throughout city.

PU VC met PUCSC

Chandigarh:

The Office Bearers i.e. Mr. Chetan Chaudhary, President, Mr. Rahul Kumar, Vice- President, Mr. Tegbir Singh, Secretary and Mr. Manpreet Singh Mahal, Joint Secretary of the newly elected Panjab University Campus Students Council along with Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare and Prof. Neena Capalash, Deans Student Welfare (W) today met the Vice-Chancellor in his Office.  The Vice-Chancellor welcomed the newly elected members.  He gave his best wishes to the Council for successful tenure i.e 2019-20. The Vice-Chancellor also suggested some programmes for the betterment of students’ community as well as Panjab University, Chandigarh.


        The Vice-Chancellor suggested that in the coming days Students’ Council to celebrate 550th Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji at the University level with enthusiasm and with full involvement.  He also added said that Council and authority should work together for Swachh Bharat Mission. Council should help to bring the University at position no.1 in terms of cleanliness.


The Vice-Chancellor also appreciated the efforts of last year’s Wardens, Students, University Security who did lot of efforts to make Panjab University ‘No Vehicle Zone’ and also suggested Students Council to focus on the use of bicycle in the University and try to implement vehicle ban in the Campus. Regarding plantation in the University, the Vice-Chancellor said that our University aimed to increase green belt in the University by planting trees and each of the Council members should take responsibility for more plantation especially in the South Campus.


During this meeting he discussed a programme ‘Earn While Learn’ and also suggested to organize job fair and technical events to increase placement alongwith culture fests. The Vice-Chancellor also explained that NAAC rating will be declared after sometimes.  They will have to focus to improve rating of the University.


        The members of the Students Council discussed the various problems of the students and hostels.  The Council promised to cooperate and support the authority from time to time on the various issues.  They assured full cooperation to the Deans Student Welfare and Vice-Chancellor.

Fresher’s night 2019 celebrated at Psychology Department, PU

Chandigarh:

The fresher’s night was held to welcome the fresh batch of students of Department of Psychology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. It was a lively, entertaining and organized event which saw the active participation of the Post Graduate students, diploma students, research scholars and faculty members. The Department representatives and class representatives welcomed the audience. The format of the fresher’s was interactive which included dances, games and talent hunt. The main attraction of the event was ramp walk which saw the freshers walk the ramp and showcase their talent followed by a quiz round. Mr. Kushagr Kaushik and Ms. Riya were crowned as Mr. Fresher and Ms.Fresher while Mr. Shubham Singh Bhardwaj and Ms. Mansi Srivastava were crowned Mr. Vivacious and Ms. Vivacious. Prof. Seema Vinayak, the Chairperson of the Department congratulated and thanked students for successful organization of the event. The
fresher’s night concluded with dance.

MCC to organize Kirtan Samagam at Khudda Ali Sher on 5th October

Chandigarh, October 4:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh is going to organize 1st Kirtan Samagam to commemorate 550th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji at Stadium, Khudda Ali Sher on 5th October from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm.

While sharing this information, Sh. Applications for Shiv Nath Rai Kohli Memorial Mid-Career Best Scientist Award

 Panjab University has sought Nominations/Applications for the prestigious Shiv Nath Rai Kohli Memorial Mid-career Best Scientist Award for 2019.  The award comprises of Rs. 1 lakh and citation. The award will be presented during the Annual Convocation of the University in 2020.

The annual award was instituted by Prof. R.K.         A number and quality of published research papers in indexed journals and patents in any field (sciences, humanities, medical science, dentistry, microbial science, commerce, business management, languages, sports science, library science, computers, engineering any stream, and others) based on work done in India, independently or in a team or in collaboration with other Indian institutions will be considered.

MCC Enforcement panel hold meeting

Chandigarh, October 3:- A meeting of the Enforcement Committee, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Rajesh Kumar Gupta and attended by other members of committee namely Sh. Sachin Lohtiya, Sh. Arun Sood, Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh, Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Smt. Gurbax Rawat, Sh. Ajay Dutta and concerned officers of MCC.

During the meeting the committee members discussed the issue of permission for putting stalls in the markets during festival season and resolved that the MCC should allow temporary stalls in market areas during festival season as per past practice.

The committee also decided to inspect the market areas to check the status of authorized venders and essential service providers. The committee asked the concerned officers of enforcement wing to remove generator sets from back lanes of markets, which are being used for commercial purposes and creates hindrance to the public for free movement in the back lanes.

The committee resolved that awareness should be created through pamphlets among public regarding the whatsup number of MCC to report complaint about encroachments and unauthorized vending in the markets. The members asked the enforcement staff to remove tourist buses from NAC market and arrange permanent solution to this encroachment. The committee also discussed the issue of Ice crème vendors, which come during night time and asked the concerned officials to come out with permanent solution in this regard.
