Chandigarh, December 4: – The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh is going to organize declamation contest among school students to commemorate 550th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji during mid of January, 2020.
This was decided during a meeting of the implementation committee constituted for conducting activities of 550th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Hardeep Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor and attended by other members of the committee namely Smt. Ravinder Kaur Gujral, Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Siddhu, Sh. Jagtar Singh, Sh. Gurpreet Singh Dhillon, Maj. Gen. M.S. Kandal and concerned officers of MCC.
The committee decided to organize declamation contest among school students based on life & teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji during the month of January, 2020. The Committee decided that cash prizes will also be given to the winners besides certificates and mementoes. The committee led by Sh. Hardeep Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor will meet DPI (Schools) tomorrow at 12.00 pm in his office to chalk out the plan of contest, scheduled to be organized during January.

Chandigarh, December 4:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today conducted final draw of lot for street vendors under Non Essential Service Providers (NESP) category successfully.
The draw of lot was conducted under the supervision of Sh. Anil Kumar Garg, Additional Commissioner, Sh. Tejdeep Singh Saini, PCS as Judicial Megistrate, Sh. Vivek Trivedi, Social Development Officer, NULM, Sh. Sunil Dutt, Incharge, Enforcement wing of MCC, Smt. Sangeeta Vardhan, Town Vending Committee member and other concerned officials of MCC. Approximate 500 street vendors took part in the draw of lot held in the MCC office premises, here today.
The draw of lot held in three categories i.e. Re-draw for those 349 vendors, whose sites have been cancelled due to non feasibility of sites. 417 street vendors, who were lost during phase-3 draw of lot and 263 street vendors, who have cleared their dues upto 30th November, 2019.
Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh said here today that all the NESP street vendors, who failed to clear their dues upto 30th November, 2019, the MCC has cancelled their license of vending in Chandigarh.
He also appealed to all the Non Essential Service Providers (NESP) Street Vendors to shift to their allotted sites on or before 5th December failing which, the MCC will remove unauthorized vendors and confiscate their products besides initiating legal action against them.
Meanwhile, a meeting of precautionary measures to be taken from 6th December to remove the unauthorized vendors from non-vending zones was held in the conference room of MCC under the chairmanship of Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC and attended by Sh. Mandeep Singh Brar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, Mrs. Nilambari Jagdale, Senior Superintendent of Police, Chandigarh and other senior officers of UT Police and MCC were present during the meeting.

Chandigarh, December 3:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has signed a memorandum of understanding with NITTTR, Sector 26, Chandigarh for technical and condition survey of roads and development of their renewal plan.
The MoU has been signed and exchanged between MCC and NITTTR in the MCC office here today which was signed by Sh. Shailender Singh, Chief Engineer on behalf of MCC and Dr. S.S. Pattnaik, Director, NITTTR, Chandigarh in presence of Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Mayor, Chandigarh and other officers of MCC and NITTTR.
M.C. Chandigarh intends to sign up the services of NITTTR, Chandigarh to provide technical guidance in ascertaining the maintenance needs, thickness of overlays and also quality control with broad objective to provide technically sound and economical solutions. This MoU will allow M.C. Chandigarh to have a complete data on pavement composition which otherwise is nearly impossible to construe from file records since inception, to enable make more logical solutions in future and ease of access to data at any time. In order that long term objectives are achieved, this MoU shall be done for a period of 30 years. Thereafter, the same can be extended for an agreeable tenure on the same terms and conditions. Ravi Kant Sharma, area councillor, Sh. Shailender Singh, Chief Engineer, other councillors and officers of MCC, prominent persons of the market & area.The Mayor informed that the 250 mm Sewerage Water pipeline will be laid in 3 Kilometer area to avoid frequent blocakages of sewer line on backside of market area in sector A,B,C & D at approximate cost of Rs. 76.31 lacs.

The two week refresher course for language teachers organized by UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC) and Department of Hindi, on the theme ‘ Challenges of Reclaiming Folk in Literature’ concluded today. The chief guest at the closing ceremony of the refresher course was Prof. Rajbir Singh, who is the Vice Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana and State University of Performing Arts, Rohtak. Addressing the participants of refresher course he said that language teachers have an important role to play in the era of communication, provided they update their knowledge as per the needs of the times.
He appreciated the theme of the refresher course and said that it was important to document the folk traditions to preserve the culture of the country. In his presidential address, UGC HRDC Honorary Director, Prof. S.K. Tomar emphasized the need of teachers to constantly have an urge to learn and be a student of the discipline. He also said that refresher courses of UGC provide this opportunity to be a student and update our knowledge and skills. Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Chairperson, Dept of Hindi, said that 27 teachers from seven states and teaching different languages participated in the course. He further informed that a total of 29 sessions were held in which 24 resource persons from different fields addressed the participants. Dr. Pratibha Kaushik, Dr. Ravinder Kaur and Dr. Chander Praksah while sharing their experiences said that besides being a knowledge enriching experience, the course has also been a memorable experience as the staff and students of Dept of Hindi also made them feel at home. Prof Rajbir and Prof. Tomar distributed the certificates to all the participants. On this occasion they also distributed cheques to the research scholars of Dept of Hindi who are working in the Earn While You Learn Scheme of the Dept.
The Symposium & Alumni Meet “Frontiers in Biochemistry”, 2019 was organized by the Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh on 29th -30th November, 2019 sponsored by UGC-SAP, UGC, New Delhi with Dr. Dipti Sareen and Dr. Nirmal Prabhakar as the Organizing Secretaries.
The symposium started with the inaugural session having Prof. H.M. Dani an alumnus and Former Dean (Faculty of Sciences) & Head, Department of Biochemistry, P.U. , Chd as the guest of honour and Prof. Sarit K Das, Director IIT Ropar as the keynote speaker. The address entitled as “Micro fluidics devices in Chemical Biology” was exciting, thought-provoking and stressed upon the need of interdisciplinary marriage of all kinds of Medical and Engineering Sciences. This was followed by the Young Scientists session comprising of six oral presentations and fourteen poster presentations judged by our eminent alumni from PGI and other CRICK institutes. The alumni interacted with the students and faculty of the department in the evening with musical games and dinner.
The talks on next day were on the mesmerizing work being carried out by the eminent scientists, Dr. J. Agrewala (IIT- Ropar), Dr. Charu Sharma (IMTECH, Chd) , Dr. P. Guptasarma ( IISER,Mohali) and Dr. Monika Garg (NABI, Mohali). A special session on “Innovative Practices & Patents” was the highlight of the symposium with three talks delivered by faculty , Prof. Bishwajit Kundu ( IIT-Delhi), Dr. Divya Kaush (PSCST ), Dr. Indrani Ghosh (Intellectual Protective Unit, CSIR). The Symposium concluded with prize distribution and vote of thanks in the Valedictory Session.

Chandigarh, November 29:- Keeping in mind the goals towards sustainable development and to do away with single use plastics from our homes, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh planned to honour the schools, which collect plastic waste through school students generated at their households and incentivize the kids for this type of initiatives.
While sharing this development, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh said that the local residents used to throw their plastic waste into dustbins, which further generates toxic fumes in surroundings and would waft into environment and loom over the city.
He was addressing school students in Strawberry Field School, sector 26 here today during Friday programme. He appreciated the efforts of student’s team for initiating attempt to curb plastic pollution and create awareness about the harmful effects of plastic waste. He said that this will also instill a sense of being eco-friendly in school students.
These students have kick started the campaign recently that is being followed religiously, every Friday. Single use plastic items, such as bags, bottles, jars and the like are brought to school and collected by the team. The items are then packed on the premises and the Municipal Corporation Authorities transported to the MCC storage at industrial area, Phase-I.
The Commissioner also distributed certificates to the team of students including Vaanya Gilhotra, Khushi Kapoor, Tishya Gupta, Arjun Mohunta and Jaiveer Bhlhaya.

Dr. Anil Kumar Dimri, Regional Director, IGNOU, Regional Center, Chandigarh informed that students are advised to be in possession of the valid Identity Card issued by the University at the time of admission during the examination. Under Regional Centre Chandigarh 7,697 eligible students have been issued Hall Tickets for this examination who will be appearing in 29,959 courses of different Programmes. IGNOU RC Chandigarh has deputed Observers for monitoring examination activities and monitoring team has also been deputed by IGNOU headquarter, New Delhi for the smooth conduct of Term End Examination in the region. IGNOU Regional Center Chandigarh has established 08 Examination Centers for TEE December, 2019 including 03 Exam Centers in Jail at Chandigarh, Patiala and Ambalal for jail inmates.
Separate Hall tickets shall be issued to the students of BCA & MCA for Term End Practical Examinations. Students are advised to contact the Regional Centre in the last week of December, 2019 for their practical examinations. For BLISc. (Library Science) all theory Examination Centres are not activated for the conduct of Term End Practical Examination. Under Regional Centre Chandigarh the Term End Practical Examination of BLISc. Programme will be held at Examination Centre 0601 at Chandigarh only. Students are advised to contact Centre Superintendent of Examination Centre 0601 and Regional Centre for Practical Examination Schedule.
The mobile phones are not permitted inside the examination hall.

‘Coming to Alma Mater is like a pilgrimage’, said Mr. Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner of India(CEC) and also Alumnus of Panjab University while addressing at the Annual Global Alumni Meet hosted by Panjab University Alumni Association(PUAA), here today at PU. While sharing the transition of Panjab University from Lahore to the present location at Chandigarh, he shared his personal and professional links to the different institutes of PU.
He urged the youth to be disrupters by becoming innovators and initiating start ups which is the need of the nation. He urged all to individually and collectively be part of the change to take the country to greater heights.
While appreciating PU in organizing this Alumni Meet and also simultaneously commemorating 3 events namely 550 years of the Guru Nanak Dev Ji, 150 Years of Mahatma Gandhi and 100 years of PU Honours School, said that all these events fill the gap between the vision and its practice. The leanings from each of these metamorphosed into movements led by these individuals who talked of things that were much ahead of times. In their own way, each of them transcended time and left an impact that is felt even today. He highlighted that the PU has had the good fortune of having been nurtured by teachers and administrators who were nothing short of Legends.
He further added that by virtue of its history, achievements, the character of its institutions and the thread that binds it to the past, PU has both a national stature as well as international acclaim. Over the years, the University has emerged as an institution that is at the frontier of innovative teaching practices, academic research, and interdisciplinary approach.

Mia Yen, Counsul General of Canada in Chandigarh discussed India Canada relations and emphasised the significant contribution of Indian students to the economy of Canada. She also shared her views on women empowerment, gender equality and dynamic bilateral relations. She shared that in last one year, there is an increase of trade between the two countries by 60%.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his welcome address said that this event is being organized to create a strong bond with the Alumni. This will also help to revive all Alumni Chapters spread all over India and the ones established overseas. Mr. Sunil Arora, CEC visited Boys Hostel No. 1, PU where he stayed for few months with his brother for the preparation of administrative services. He said that visit to his hostel filled him with nostalgia which has taken him back to his student life. He inaugurated Wall of Alumni in the Common Room of BH-1 which had pictures of ex-residents who achieved distinguished position in their life like Lt. Captain Vikram Batra (Martyr), Naunihal Singh (Inspector General of Police, Punjab), Lt. Vikas Kundu (Indian Army), Pawan Kumar (Crime Branch, Chandigarh Police), Malwinder Kang (B.J.P Spokesperson, Punjab State), Dr. Manoj Kumar Teotia (CRRID, Chandigarh), Kuljeet Singh Nagra (M.L.A. from Fatehgarh Assembly, Punjab), Anmol Rattan Sidhu ( Addl. Solicitor General of India). A first ever Hostel Magazine of Boys Hostel No. 3, connecting residents and the Hostel Alumni, was launched during the event. There was a ‘Fire Side Chat on Brand Building for Higher Education Institutes’ by Dr. Sandeep Goyal, an advertising Veteran and Mr. Harit Nagpal, CEO, Tata Sky.
The day 1 of the event concluded with a Light, Sound and Sight show on Guru Nanak Devji and the lighting of lanterns and lamps marking 100 years of the Panjab University Honours School.
