Rahul Ahlawat, a fourth year B.E. student of UIET-PU, has secured All India Rank-25 in Mechanical Engineering stream of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examinations, the results of which were declared by IIT Delhi on Friday. Rahul scored 81.93 marks out of 100.
Rahul was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 3000/- for achieving best GATE score in Mechanical Department of UIET. The award was given by the Director Prof. Savita Gupta in the presence of Mechanical Coordinator Prof. Manu Sharma and GATE Committee Incharge Dr. Shankar Sehgal.
Rahul, 20, who secured such a good rank in the first attempt, said that it was truly a proud moment for his family and university. Discussing his future strategy, he said “I want to prepare for the UPSC exam in future, however, my immediate next goal is to join in a Public Sector Unit (PSU) for serving the nation.”
In the wake of the notifications issued by the Governments of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and U.T. Administration, Delhi regarding closure of educational institutions as a measure to prevent the pandemic conditions arising out of Covid-19, the Panjab University authority has taken the view of all the stakeholders of the University and after due deliberations, it has been decided that till 31st March, 2020:
1. The teaching including personal contact programmes in the teaching departments, regional centres, institutes, constituent colleges, affiliated colleges in the State of Punjab as well as U.T. Chandigarh shall remain suspended.
2. The students and research scholars of Panjab University are advised to vacate the hostels and they may remain stationed in their respective home towns and avoid any travel.
3. All internal examinations including mid semester test, evaluation/assessment stand postponed.
4. All functions such as seminars, conferences, symposia, workshops, any group activity and gatherings by whatever name called shall also stand postponed.

Dr. Deepak Sharma, Assistant Professor, Guest Faculty, Department of Public Administration, Panjab University is the only Indian who has been selected to attend an International staff training programme on Animal Welfare, importance of education and fund raising for better management of NGOs to be held at London from 16th to 20th March, United Kingdom The training will be sponsored by Dogs Trust International,UK.
The training programme will be of great importance for development of animal welfare standards and reduction of human animal conflict at community level. Dr. Deepak Sharma is associated with Animal Lovers Association (Regd since 2002) which is self funded organization working for welfare of community animals. The managing committee comprises of Academicians, PU Alumni and members of varies professions. The organization runs an animal shelter in village Soonak, Mohali Punjab. The shelter houses sick and injured small and large animals that includes cows, bulls, donkeys,horses,dogs and birds. Recently Animal Lovers Association is adjudged as one of the best shelters across India by Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations and Felicitated by Mayor of Local Government, Chandigarh. The workshop will to understand how more effectively projects can be undertaken to promote harmonious and peaceful coexistence between humans and animals which is the need of hour.

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh constituted a committee under the Chairmanship of Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions regarding the case of PU Student, here today.
The said case was discussed in detail and it was informed that the said student who returned from Italy was sent immediately to PGIMER on 9th March, 2020 for the relevant check up. The above student came back and informed that due to lack of evident symptoms, PGIMER sent him back without any check up. Prof. Deepak Kapur, Chairperson of UBS immediately sent the student to Dr. D Dhawan, CMO, PU for granting him leave for two weeks. The said student applied leave to CMO who advised him to be immediately quarantined for 14 days w.e.f. 9.3.2020 as per WHO guidelines. He informed that said student was thoroughly checked at Delhi International Airport on his landing and also a team has checked him at his home and has been found without any symptoms.
Thereafter, the CMO, PU immediately contacted Dr. Varinder Nagpal, Medical Superintendent-cum-Joint Director, Health Services, UT and informed him about the suspected case from Italy in PU. Later on, a letter in this regard was written to the Medical Superintendent-cum-Joint Director. The MS in his reply asked to monitor the patient for any clinical sign and symptoms and advised that the student be home quarantined for 14 days. He further asked to advice the students to report, in case, he develops any symptoms of sore throat, running nose, fever and difficulty in breathing, in which case, the student can contact the emergency services being run in Sector-16 General Hospital.
Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, PU informed that PU has taken precautionary measure in this regard and other students have also been advised to stay alert about any such symptom and inform immediately to the authorities.

Chandigarh, March 9:- Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, Chandigarh today started work for re-carpeting of V-5 road in sector 42 infront of Govt. College of Girls having total length of 1.5 Kilometer.
She was accompanied by area councilor Sh. Hardeep Singh Butrela, Sh. Ajay Garg, Executive Engineer (B&R) and other concerned officers of MCC. She said that this road is being re-carpeted after 5 years. The condition of this road was very poor and now this road will be re-carpeted with a layer of 30mm thick bituminous concrete at an approximate amount of Rs. 12 lacs, she added. She instructed the concerned engineers and contractor to complete this work within one week positively.

Panjab University in its Syndicate meeting, here today, deliberated on all the issues. At the outset, the Syndicate unanimously conveyed their appreciation for the commendable performance of the students of Sports Department of PU and its affiliated Colleges for bringing laurels by winning the First Khelo India University Games 2020 under the able leadership of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Dr. Parminder Singh, Director, Department of Sports, Dr. Rakesh Malik, Deputy Director and all coaches. It was also resolved to extend all possible support to the sports persons.
The Syndicate applauded Sh. Ashok Goyal, PU Fellow for donating blood more than 100 times at Rotary and Blood Bank Society Resource Center, Sector-37, Chandigarh. He was recently honoured as a Star Donor for donating 4 times in a year
The Syndicate approved the recommendation of nomination of 2 Eminent Jurists namely Justice Jasbir Singh and Justice B.S. Walia on the Research Degree Committee in Law for 2 Years w.e.f. 1.1.2020.
The Syndicate authorised the Vice Chancellor to nominate 2 senior most Associate Professors and 2 senior most Assistant Professor on the Academic Council for the term 1.2.2020 to 31.1.2022.
The Syndicate approved the increase of a unit in BA LLB(Hons.) at Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana from the Session 2020-21. However, starting LLM, BA LLB(Hons.) in Panjab University Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Centre (PUSSGRC), Hoshiarpur was kept pending for re-examining.
The Syndicate approved the revision of treatment charges of various types of treatment being provided at Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital.
The Syndicate approved the amendment in existing policy for grant of Basic Pay+DA+GP to extend the benefit of 9 Library Assistants working on fixed emoluments on contract basis.
The Syndicate approved the minutes of the committee to look into the leave cases of teaching staff.
The Syndicate also approved the minutes to examine the cases for appointment on Compassionate Ground.
Chandigarh, March 7:- Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh announced to release special grant of Rs. 132 crores to the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh here today.
In a meeting held in the Punjab Raj Bhavan, here today the Governor expressed his concern over to complete the ongoing projects of Municipal Corporation and announced release of Rs. 75 crores (including Rs. 63 crores for road re carpeting), Rs. 19.60 crores for increasing of storage capacity of water tanks, Rs. 9.50 crores for removal of Dark spots, Rs. 14.95 crores for operation and maintenance of villages and Rs. 13.03 crores under village development fund.
The meeting was attended by Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Sh. Ajoy Kumar Sinha, IAS, Finance Secretary, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Jagtar Singh Jagga, Deputy Mayor and other councilors of MCC.
