The Department of Library and Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised an International webinar on Disaster Management: an integrated approach. Ms. Heather Brown, Assistant Director, Artlab Australia was the resource person.
In the beginning of the webinar, Professor Preeti Mahajan, Chairperson of the department welcomed the speaker and the participants. She also introduced the theme of the webinar.
Ms. Brown emphasized on risk management and prevention so that institutions can prepare to respond with a proper plan of action to salvage both electronic as well as physical resources. Live examples from day to day situations and recovery from natural or manmade calamities were discussed to provide the participants with ideas about collection care during pandemic.
The session was followed by a question and answer session and vote of thanks.

Chandigarh, September 29:- A meeting of Water Supply & Sewerage Disposal Committee, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Anil Kumar Dubey and attended by other members of committee namely Sh. Jagtar Singh Jagga, Sh. Hardeep Singh, Sh. Rajesh Gupta, Sh. Dalip Sharma and concerned officers of MCC.
The committee members discussed and decided following important issues related to water supply and sewerage disposal:
1. The Committee discussed and decided that an agenda regarding reviewing the water tariff may be placed in the next general house meeting of MCC. The members observed that the water tariff has been increased and put extra load on the city residents.
Chandigarh, September 28: – The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh is going to start Scarifying and re-carpeting of V-3 road sector 18/19, V-5 road Sector 36 and parking infront of SCO’s Sector 22 C&D, Chandigarh. Due to this re-carpeting work during the period from 29.09.2020 to 15.10.2020, the roads would be diverted on single road and general public is requested to take alternate route and bear with Municipal Corporation.
The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies in collaboration with the Panjab University Alumni Association and Social Substance organized Online Painting Art Workshop (Live Demonstration of Wall Painting of Gandhi ji) by Mr. Rohan Riaou via Cisco WebEx online portal in celebrating Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on 28th September, 2020.
While welcoming the audience and other invited members of PU Alumni Association, the Chairperson of the Department Dr. Manish Sharma while remembered and paid respect to Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh and other freedom fighters. And he also introduced the artist Mr. Rohan who has left his marks at various places like Chattbir Zoo where his wall paintings were very much appreciated and loved by many visitors.
The theme selected by Mr. Rohan was Gandhi with his Charkha from which positive vibrations of self-sufficiency and self-reliant was emerging. The workshop was attended by many participants and Mr. Rohan explained in details about the different formations of the art and other details relating to the art piece.
In the end, Dr Manish Sharma proposed vote of thanks to all the participants and other invited members of PU Alumni Association for attending and appreciating the hard work and talent of Mr. Rohan. Dr Sharma also informed the members that tomorrow at 10 am onwards the on the spot Slogan Writing Competition will be organized via Cisco WebEx again in collaboration with the PU Alumni Association.

The University institute of Hotel and Tourism Management, Panjab university organised a webinar in collaboration with TIGR2ESS project on the theme of United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) “Tourism and Rural development”. Vice Chancellor, Panjab University Prof. Raj Kumar in his inaugural Address spoke about the importance of tourism. He insisted the participants to focus on the opportunity during this period of time i.e to use the virtual platform in order to reach the masses to promote tourism and to increase the diameter of Atam Nirbar Bharat. The prevailing tourism was mostly focused around mass tourism and main ingredients of this tourism were Sun, Sand, Sea, Culture & Heritage, MICE, Business and Events. The nature of tourists was holidaying, participation and business. But all these aspects are now seriously affected by the havoc created by COVID19. “As a large number of people are working from home only, I have experienced that due to more time spent on social media, people have started sharing more about their local heritage resources. In one way or another they have now started to understand the importance of the local heritage and rural tourism” added Prof. Rajkumar
Sh. Jeevan Lal Verma was the lead speaker of the webinar, where he shared his onsite experiences of promoting Rural Tourism at Kanda Village in Uttarakhand. “I got the idea of volunteer tourism while I was attending a workshop in 1988, where few foreign tourists were looking for volunteer services”. Mr. Verma every year invites various volunteers to the Kanda and nearby villages in Uttarakhand to stay and work for the society. “Generally tourists want to interact with local people and stay with them. We have to just provide some basic facilities to them. This can act as additional income for the rural population. In this way tourism can enrich lives of local people”
Another speaker Mr.Ankit Sood, Eco Tourism planner emphasized on the role and importance of rural tourism and how it stood by the pandemic in the recent past. He also insisted on the promotion of eco tourism for sustainable development. He has also shared the efforts being undertaken by the Himachal Government in promoting community based tourism activities.
Prof. Ramanjeet Johal, Principal Investigator of TIGR2ESS project shared the details of the project which is transforming India’s green Revolution by research and empowerment for sustainable food supplies in collaboration with Cambridge university. She shared the details as well as the importance of the project. At this occasion the department launched an online business idea competition ‘Imaging Tomorrow’. This competition will invite ideas in the field of tourism and hospitality. This competition is being organised in collaboration with Indian Tourism and Hospitality Congress. Prof. Prashant Gautam shared the details of this event.
Earlier Dr. Anish, Director UIHTM presented a formal welcome address. Dr. Lipika shared the details of activities, which the department organised to commemorate world tourism day. In the end Dr. Arun Singh presented a vote of thanks.

As a part of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) series, a webinar entitled, ‘Patent Protection in India and Abroad’was organized today by IPR Chair, Panjab University in association with DST-Centre for Policy Research,PU and Association of Microbiologists of India ,Chandigarh unit.
The keynote speaker,Dr. K.S. Kardam, Former Sr. Joint Controller of Patents & Designs, Government of India, presented a holistic and comprehensive insight into the relevance of the intellectual property (IP) and exemplified the detailed process of applying for patents in India and abroad through the Indian Patent Office and the Patent Cooperation Treaty respectively. Dr. Kardam also apprised the audience about the recent efforts of the central government to shorten patent-grant period and introduction of novel schemes to stimulate IP ecosystem in India. He particularly dwelled upon,‘Scheme for Facilitating Startups Intellectual Property Protection’ (SIPP) to boost start-up culture in India. This scheme is being highly appreciated by the budding entrepreneurs.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor Panjab University (PU), chaired the webinar and emphasized the importance of patents for the young minds and researchers.He was of the opinion that a single patent is worth more than a dozen of research publications. He also highlighted the need for strengthening IPR regime in Indian higher education institutions.
Dr Sanjeev Khosla, Director, Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh and distinguished guest of the event apprised the audience of the patent regime of CSIR laboratories and also stressed upon the generation of wealth via the patent commercialization.
The webinar was attended by nearly 100 participants comprising of young researchers, students, professors and scientists belonging to many Higher Education Institutes as well as Research Laboratories situated in and around Chandigarh.

A webinar on ‘National Education Policy 2020: Introducing coding at young age’ was organized by the Department of Computer Science and Applications, Panjab University and Vidya Bharti today.
The webinar started with the welcome address by Dr. Rohini Sharma, Chairperson where she discussed that Coding is a basic literacy in this digital age and this idea of introducing coding at young age can be achieved by joint efforts of all the stakeholders.
PU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar, in his address stressed upon the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders to implement the ideas proposed in NEP. He added that the reforms will open many doors of opportunities not only for students but also for the country as a whole to become a global knowledge superpower. It will change the perception of the Indian education system from the school level onwards by allowing every student to pursue their interests and excel in the field they desire.
PU VC opined that Introducing coding and increasing exposure to technology at a young age will go a long way in helping future generations lead the way to a new world of innovation and creativity, thus, giving children the opportunity to set their own goals and reach new heights debarred of old teaching systems to pull them down. The secret of success for a student lies in making the best use of his capability and capacity to think. Previously the student used to think through the mind of the teacher and follow their thought process. Coding helps to blossom every single unit of the child’s brain whether being logical thinking or through art integration, mechanics, or analytical thinking. It enables children to enter the world of new-age technology by giving them an arena to develop apps and games or work in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence.
Sh. Vijay Nadda, Organizing Secretary North Zone, Vidya Bharti was the chief guest who talked on the role of a good teacher in shaping the future of students, as it is the teacher whose hand the student holds in his journey to success. . He shared his thoughts on the new ‘Shiksha Neeti’ and how it marks an important step by the government to help brighten the future of the nation.

The keynote speaker Prof. Sanjeev Sofat from PEC, Chandigarh talked on the benefits of learning coding at a young age like development of analytical and computational thinking and problem solving skills. It will lead to algorithmic and structural thinking in kids, that is, they will get the ability to define clear steps to solve a problem and learn how problems can be divided into smaller modules for efficient solutions. Coding concepts inculcate the habit of curiosity and will push the students to ask questions.

Dr. Parminder Duggal, Principal Ankur School also expressed her views on the topic and Prof. Anu Gupta concluded the webinar by proposing a vote of thanks. The webinar concluded on a positive note that introducing coding in schools will bring positive change in the way kids think about problems.

Dr. SSBUICET, Panjab University, Chandigarh, in collaboration with DUIET, Assam is organizing a Two days International Online Conference on Sustainable Research Technology and Development (IOCSRT-2020) on September 24- 25,2020 under the aegis of TEQIP-III, a World Bank project offered by MHRD, GOI.
The inaugural session today included briefing about the Conference, TEQIP-III project, Dr. SSBUICET and DUIET.
The Conference was formally inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar, He opined that Science plays a crucial role for sustainable development and is key to answering many of the questions facing countries across the world today –food security and water management, ocean sustainability, eradicating poverty, ensuring health, and forging new paths to inclusive, sustainable development.
Building a sustainable world requires overcoming disciplinary boundaries. Interdisciplinary cooperation, on the basis of disciplinary excellence, can contribute to developing an integrated scientific approach aimed at supporting sustainable development. It should be based on a broad understanding of science, covering the whole range of disciplines from natural sciences to engineering to social sciences and the humanities, and address the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. Panjab University recognizes that research, especially cross-disciplinary research, is the key success factor to the achievement of a sustainable future for society and communities. Research can help to make ongoing improvements in sustainability measures, products and policies. It can also help to encourage and induce societal efforts and opportunities in bringing about sustainability changes to our natural and human systems. Such research inevitably crosses the traditional divide between the sciences and engineering, humanities and law, and education, to produce new and refreshing possibilities in research and its outcomes. The divisions into traditional disciplines as well as the distinct separation of science from society have to be overcome. Also, global scientific cooperation – on a level playing field – needs to be increased.
That is why PU has created various verticals for interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary approach to societal problems. All seminars and workshops are designed by involving multiple Departments and Centres, he added.
The Vice Chancellor, BHU Varanasi Prof. Rakesh Bhatnagar in his address congratulated on the theme of the conference. In the message sent from BHU, he emphasized on the need of sustainable technologies in the present scenario.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. G.D. Yadav, Emeritus Professor of Eminence and Excellence, Former Vice Chancellor, ICT Mumbai. He clearly mentioned the energy intensive issues raised by the present Industry. Citing a large number of applications, he talked about the alternatives which are actually sustainable and offer a cyclical phenomenon of life and death.
Over a span of two days, the conference will include a number of plenary lectures, invited talks and oral/poster presentations in various parallel sessions. The thrust areas of the event include Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology, Green and Sustainable energy, Waste Management, Biochemical Engineering, Process Modeling, Simulation & Optimization and Advanced Separation Technologies, Catalysis & Reaction Engineering, Process Intensification, Food & Nutrition, Polymers & Composites, Petroleum Refining & Petrochemicals, Process Engineering Control & Automation.
