Panjab University Alumni Association in collaboration with Institute of Educational Technology and Vocational Education organized a webinar “ Transforming Indian Education Through NEP 2020: A Roadmap” by Prof. Sanjay Deshmukh,Professor of Life Sciences at Mumbai University.

Prof. Deshmukh discussed the role of Universities in 1960’s which was Creation, Preservation and Dissemination of knowledge. He compared it to role of Universities as viewed today, i.e, Creation of research and innovation, Preservation of academic infrastructure, Dissemination of Knowledge: perception of students on teaching and learning. He said that Universities should not prepare for the future rather they should mould the future.

He discussed different types of Intelligence and approaches to learning. Speaking about IQ he said that an individual’s intelligence cannot be a fixed quantity that cannot be increased, to which a lot of participants agreed. Then he discussed the seven steps that led to NEP 2020 and the challenges in contemporary times in education, assessment, transformation of agenda etc. Prof Deshmukh discussed the key elements and features of NEP 2020 in detail. He explained every aspect of the policy and said it is the policy for the next generation. He discussed the vision for schools, success indicator of the policy, multidisciplinary approach, ODL for all institutions etc.

Prof. Deshmukh discussed many other key features of the policy and concluded by explaining the last lines of the Gayatri Mantra and quoting from the Rigveda ‘ May all thoughts be inspired by that divine light and dispel the darkness’.

Earlier, Dr. Kanwalpreet Kaur, Chairperson, Institute of Educational Technology and Vocational Education Panjab University welcomed and introduced Prof. Deshmukh.She informed that 

Prof. Sanjay Deshmukh is an internationally acclaimed Life Scientist who holds vast experience of all shades of the academic and education administration paradigm. Prof. Deshmukh is PhD (Mumbai University), DSc (Honoris Causa, RML Avadh Univ., UP) – India; FNESA [LEAD Fellow (INDIA) – Cohort 11] Professor of Life Sciences; Formerly, Vice-Chancellor University of Mumbai. He was the youngest Vice Chancellor of University of Mumbai. He holds extensive field level research experience- spanning over 50 countries. He is also the r ecipient of DSc (honoris causa) from Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, Uttar Pradesh, in recognition of monumental research and academic contributions to Higher Education.

“UIAMS launches Project CICERONE- The mentorship program”

Placement Cell, UIAMS successfully launched its mentorship program “CICERONE 1.0” in an online mode which was convened by Rashi Vats (student). The occasion was graced by the presence of Prof. Upasna Joshi Sethi, Director, UIAMS and Dr. Amandeep Singh Marwaha, Training and Placement Officer, the faculty members, and several alumni members from the passed out batches.

“CICERONE 1.0” is a mentorship program designed to bridge the gap between student life and the corporate world. The aim of the program is to clear the fear in students’ minds and to give a first-hand experience of the corporate world. The project is an initiative of students from the college’s placement cell and the team consists of – Saloni (Project co-ordinator), Rashi Vats (Content Creator), Rohit (Creative head), Sushmita Aggarwal (Digital Marketing Head), and Dr. Amandeep Singh Marwaha (Public Relations).

Prof. Upasna declared the Project CICERONE open. She appreciated the initiative and was elated by the efforts shown by the team to officially launch this project. She advised the students to exploit this opportunity to its fullest.

CICERONE began as a pilot project with a batch of 6 students and a 4 session mentorship was provided to them by ArpitUppal (2011-2013), Harsimran Kaur (2010-2012), DhruvVashisht (2014-2016), and Kautaq Singh Cheema (2017-2019). The pilot project was successful which lead the team to launch the project officially. The mentor in this program will be the college alumni who are industry experts, educational gurus, specific domain experts, and entrepreneurs, all from different walks of life.

Dr Amandeep Singh Marwaha told that UIAMS has a history of 10 glorious passed out batches. The students will be divided into different batches of six students each. Each batch will be provided with a mentor. It is a month-long program. Team CICERONE aims to carry out this project as an ongoing event in the future.

Nitish Chawla, an alumnus batch (2013-2015) said,” I, thank you all for this initiative. I am nostalgic about my college days, how the guidance of our teacher has helped us do better in life”. The occasion was further graced by Kautaq Cheema (2017-19), Shivam Kaisha (2017-2019), Nikhil Dhingra (2011-2013), Lovepreet Singh Sidhu (2016-2018), all alumni of the college.

The faculty members present during the event which included Dr. Nishi Sharma, Dr. Anupreet Kaur Mavi, Dr. Manjushri Sharma and Dr. Rachita Sambyal wished the team great success for the initiative. The students who were present thanked the Placement Cell and Team CICERONE for their efforts for this initiative.

Sh Gian Chand Gupta, Hon’ble Speaker, Haryana Vidhan Sabha graced the occasion as Chief Guest and informed the participants about the teachings of Maharaja Agarsen Ji. The keynote address of the event was given by Dr. Nand Kishore Garg , chancellor, Maharaja Agarsen University, Baddi. In his keynote address, he informed about his efforts of compilation of work done by Maharaja Agarsen Ji. 

The event was hosted by Prof. Harish Kumar and he explained the different tasks and events organized by ‘Agarsen Vichar Manch’ since its inception in 2015. 

Sh. Salil Kumar highlighted how Agarsen Vichar Manch is encouraging school students and the youth in the various communities of the Panjab University by supporting them financially and socially.

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT&VD), Panjab University, Chandigarh, conducted a Webinar titled – From Lakmé Fashion Week to London Fashion Platform on Friday 16th, 2020. It was attended by 100 participants including faculty members, research scholars and students of Fashion Technology. Chairperson of UIFT&VD, Dr. Prabhdip Brar, gave an introductory note, welcoming the speaker, Mr. Armaan Randhawa from United Kingdom, a creative and visionary fashion designer and fashion stylist with 8 successful years of producing exceptional minimal clothing lines for fashion house, buying house and Lakme fashion week. He believes that, to be a successful designer one has to have his/her own signature style. Highly versatile with in-depth knowledge of current trends, strong budgeting and marketing, the speaker explained how the garment presentation being sent to qualify for a Fashion Week carries only 20% weightage while the rest 80% includes story board, mood board, colour palette, styling, photoshoot among others

The importance of books for research over social media platforms in creating an original artwork and creating a story was discussed. Also, the designer advised the curious fashion students that they should make commercial merchandise rather than avant-garde. Also, the styling done by the designer is minimal with less make up and not much accessories. This session would definitely help the young, budding fashion designers, fashion photographers, fashion stylists, fashion editors in the making, to apply for various fashion weeks and establish themselves in the fashion industry.

PUAA organizes web lecture on Things to Know to keep your Heart Healthy

Panjab University Alumni Association organized a web lecture on “Things
to Know to keep your Heart Healthy” by Dr. Rajesh Vijayvergiya , MD, DM,
FSCAI, FACC, FISES, Department of Cardiology, PGIMER , a senior
interventional cardiologist performing coronary and peripheral
intervention at PGI for over 20 years.

Ms. Sonia Chandel from PUAA welcomed and introduced Dr. Vijayvergiya to
the participants.


He has published over 150 research papers in both national and
international journals, received many awards and is a member of many
professional bodies like Cardiology Society of India, Fellow of Society
of the Cardiac Angiography and Intervention, International Society of
Heart Research to name a few.

Dr. Vijayvergiya discussed about Major Cardiovascular Diseases like
Heart Attack, Stroke, Rhythm etc and the reasons for their increase. He
said smoking is the major reason for heart diseases and went on to
discuss hypertension, obesity etc. He then discussed how to manage these
problems. He discussed diet and exercise, stress and cardiovascular
risk, warnings for heart attacks. Dr. Vijayvergiya concluded by
describing what is angiography/ angioplasty and showed a video of the
treatment to dispel the fear about this procedure.


Next, the participants asked a lot of questions regarding Cardiovascular
Diseases and treatment which Dr. Vijayvergiya answered to their
satisfaction.


  Ms. Sonia Chandel gave a vote of thanks. Dr. Vijayvergia also thanked
PUAA for the interaction .

ASHWIN NAVRATRA MELA FROM 17.10.2020 to 25.10.2020

Panchkula’ 15 october– All the necessary arrangements for holding the Navratra Mela from 17.10.2020 to 25.10.2020 have been made for the safety, security and hastle free darshan of devotees keeping in view the pandemic situation and SOPs issued by the State Government and by the Ministry of Home Affairs Govt.of India from time to time in this regard. In pursuance of SOPs, adequate arrangements have been made for washing of hands and feet, thermal screening and proper sanitization at Panchkula, Kalka and Chandi Mandir. To maintain social distancing and to contain further spread of corona, the Shrine Board has already facilitated darshan through online registration w.e.f. 8.6.2020 and this method has become very successful during this period. During these Navratras also, devotees will have to obtain e-ticket from the website of Board www.mansadevi.org.in. Now this facility has been increased from 4500 devotees to 11000 devotees per day. Free Rapid Covid Test of devotees is also being conducted before entering the temple.

Besides this, another category i.e. “Preferential Darshan” has also been introduced this time on trial basis. For such devotees token with paid darshan @ Rs.50/- per devotee will be issued and they will be allowed preferential darshan from Gate No.3. Nearly 100 devotees will be allowed in one hour slot and total 1600 devotees in a day. Children below the age of 10 years and persons above the age of 65 years are advised to avoid in this pandemic situation.


Parsaadam Scheme is also being introduced for the first time to provide quality parsaad of packed dry fruits weighing 100 gram and 200 gram online as well as offline. The cost of online parsaad to be delivered through postal services weighing 100 gram and 200 gram will be Rs.101/- and Rs.151/- respectively, including postal charges and it will be sent throughout India. This quality parsaad will also be given to the devotees offline in Panchkula, Kalka and Chandi Mandir. The offline parsaad of 100 gram and 200 gram will cost Rs.50/- and Rs.100/- respectively. Deshi Ghee Halwa Parsaad will also be provided to all devotees free of cost.

Corona Mukti Hawan will also be performed whole day daily and dignitaries will also be invited in the Hawan. Dharamshala booking has also been started online and rooms will be allotted on production of Covid Test Report. Bhandaras have also been allowed to provide packed cooked parsaad to the devotees after darshan on their way back to home.


Arrangements have also been made for live darshan through Facebook channel, You-Tube Channel (maa mansa devi) & Application ivms-4500 and live arti for the facilitation of devotees who come to pay Obeisance to the Deity from their home. Besides this, live Aarti is also being telecasted through T.V.Chamnnel ‘Khabren Abhi Tak’.

Adequate arrangements of security, medical facilities, uninterrupted water and power supply , sanitation, protocol and liaison officers etc etc have been made for the facilitation of the devotees.

Official Website Launched for the International Conference to be held in March 2021 at Panjab University

Panjab University Chandigarh launched the website
www.icamse2021.weebly.com for the International Conference on Aspects of
Materials Science and Engineering to be held on 05th – 06th March 2021.
All accepted papers of the conference will be published in Elsevier’s
Scopus indexed journal: Materials Today: Proceedings. Conference
coordinator Dr. Shankar Sehgal who is also Managing Guest Editor of
Materials Today: Proceedings welcomed the guests and informed them that
more than 250 papers are expected to be presented during the conference.

Interactive Computing’ on October 15th, 2020.

The occasion was graced by Prof. V.R. Sinha, Dean Research and
officiating  Dean of University Instructions, Panjab University
Chandigarh.Hehighlighted upon the mandate of NEP 2020 which is to make
the education system holistic and multidisciplinary and encourage the
use of technology for effective teaching.


He dwelled upon the changes proposed by the policy which were :-
Multiple entry and Multiple exits, abolishment of M.Phil, autonomy which
could be given to private colleges, one regulator for higher education
and parity between the government and private colleges.

Prof. Maninder Singh, Head of Computer Science and Engineering
Department and Center of Information and Technology Management (CITM),
Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, highlighted the
importance of quality education which can only be achieved through a
strong framework and design.He also focused on 2009’s Right to Education
in the Constitution of India which provided free and compulsory
education for all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as
a Fundamental Right.He emphasised on quality education and virtual labs
and the change in the overall spending of the government from 3% of the
GDP to proposed 6% of the GDP on the national education, and the key
aspect of measurement such as international rankings and research
aspect.He vividly explained the importance of Google Colaboratory and
Project Jupyter(Project Jupyter exists to develop open-source software,
open-standards, and services for interactive computing across dozens of
programming languages) through interactive examples and great
explanation.

The programme was coordinated by Prof. Sonal Chawla, DCSA, Panjab
University, Chandigarh. The session was overwhelmingly attended by DCSA
students, research scholars, faculty from other departments and colleges
too
