Two day conference on Ramanujan concludes at PU

The Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, in association with the Chandigarh Chapter of the National Academy of Sciences, India and the Society for Promotion of Science of Science & Technology in India (SPSTI)organized a two day online conference,“Life, Work and Legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan”, to commemorate his 100th death anniversary. 

Two sessions were organized, on November 20 and 21. They were attended by 100 participants on the zoom and around 5900 reached on Facebook page of SPSTI. Former Vice Chancellors of PU Prof. Arun Grover and Prof K.N. Pathak along with Prof. I. B. S. Passi,well known Mathematician from the Department, graced the occasion.

The session on November 20, 2020 started with welcome address by Prof. Gurmeet Kaur Bakshi, Chairperson, Dept. of Mathematics, PU. Shri DharmVir, President, SPSTI gave a brief introduction of the work and initiatives of SPSTI for promotion of science and technology among young minds.

The first lecture, “the tragedy and triumph of life of the genius”, was delivered by Padma Shri Prof. Dinesh Singh, Chancellor, K. R. Mangalam University, Gurugram and former VC, Delhi University. He dwelled on the life of Ramanujan and presented the achievements and challenges he faced in a very lucid manner. He mentioned how inspite of facing many difficulties throughout his life he pursued his grand passion for till his last breath. 

Ramanujan was the first to show the British that Indians not only can match them but can also be better. During his short life span, the great Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887 – 1920) independently compiled nearly 3900 results (mostly identities and equations).

The next speaker, Prof. George Andrews, Evan Pugh Professor of Mathematics at Pennsylvania State University, Prof. Andrews deliberated on how Ramanujan may have thought of the mock theta functions. He engaged the participants with a detailed derivation of mock theta functions and also mentioned that there are three more functions which Ramanujan mentioned in his last letter to Prof. G.H. Hardy which are higher order series, not related to each other, and remain mysteries till today. Both the lectures followed with questions which were answered in detail by both the speakers.

The last session of the conference was on November 21 in which Prof. A.K. Agarwal, Dept. of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, delivered a very insightful and critical lecture, “The Legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan”. The Mathematician talked on various aspects of his life and research considering his family, his struggle and also his spirituality. His practical approach to the life of Ramanujan made the audience on Zoom and facebook page of SPSTI connected with both the Speaker and the great Ramanujan. The talk ended with a discussion on inclusion of Ramanujan’s work at junior classes as well.

59TH NATIONAL PHARMACY WEEK CELEBRATIONS CONCLUDES AT UIPS, PANJAB UNIVERSITY

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences under the aegis of MHRD Institution’s Innovation Council and IPA, Panjab Branch celebrated 59th National Pharmacy Week with the theme Pharmacists: Frontline Health Professionals from 17th -21st

The week began with e-poster competition with 30 entries from the institutes across the nation. Event was held under the vigilance of Dr Anurag Kuhad. Dr Vandita Kakkar and Dr Amita Sarwal organized the quiz and interactive debate competition in collaboration with Dr Eswar Rao from MyBO group on 18th & 19th November respectively. More than 100 candidates from institutes like NIPER Mohali, NIPER Hyderabad, Jamia Hamdard, and Lovely Professional University registered and events observed exemplary performance by all the students.

Webinar on the “Skills, Values and Sustainability in the face of COVID 19 Crises by Prof. Nandita Singh Dean, International Students, Panjab University was held on 20th November. Prof. V. R. Sinha, Dean Research, Panjab University, Chief Guest of the day, emphasized on the role of pharmacists not only as frontline warrior, but also as a fabricator and manufacturer of the vaccines and medicines. He acknowledged the importance of pharmacists in the society as ‘if no pharmacists, then no medicines’; ‘and if no medicines, then no Swasth Bharat’.” Dr Nandita Singh emphasized on the importance of developing social, ethical and emotional capacities in the youth to conquer the future challenges and pandemics.

The week ended with a valedictory function on 21 November, with an expert talk on National Innovation & StartUp Policy (NISP) & Healthcare StartUp Opportunities by Mr Sachin Rajaram Kumbhoje, CEO and & Co-Founder, OpEx Accelerator Pvt. Ltd. He highlighted the need and objectives of the National Innovation and Startup Policy. He encouraged that Pharma Professional Students should choose the path of entrepreneurship by innovating solutions for existing healthcare pain points by exploring the different opportunities in healthcare sector, encapsulating StartUp Ecosystem in India, Current Healthcare Startup Landscape, Sectors and Sub Sectors of Healthcare Innovations. Felicitation of the winners of various competitions was done with certificates and cash prizes during the event.

PU VC Releases Book on Domestic Violence Against Women

            Department of Community Education and Disability Studies, Panjab University organized a webinar on ‘National Education Policy 2020 and Neuro – Developmental Disabilities’ which was inaugurated by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor.

            PU VC motivated the faculty and the students of the Department to be engaged in innovative activities. He said that the Government unveiled the new Education Policy on July 30th, 2020 with the objective of bringing in wide transformation in higher education sectors and make India a vibrant knowledge society.

            The key speaker of the Webinar, Dr. Renu Malaviya, Head of Department, Department of Education, Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi and very renowned educationist in disability field, talked about NEP – 2020 and related to disability sector especially Neuro – Developmental Disabilities meaning (Specific Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disabilities). NEP – 2020 has paved the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education system. The policy recommendations bring a sea change in the Indian education system and make restructuring the curriculum  and pedagogy of schools and higher education more skill-oriented. She also promoted the Divyang Friendly institution. Every higher education institution (HEI) should open the Disability Centre or Equal Opportunity Centre so every disabled student will be  given rights to education. Dr. Malaviya encouraged the Indian Sign language and e-support for the neuro-developmental students in NEP – 2020.

·        Renewal of license of Chandigarh washerman workshop cooperative (Regd.) industrial society Ltd., sector 15-D, Chandigarh from 1-10-2020 to 30-09-2021 with an increase of 10% in the license fee.

·        Rough cost estimate for re-carpeting of phirni road and Gaushala approach road, village Maloya at an estimate cost of Rs. 44.85 lacs.

·        Extension of contract for supply of 16 security guards and 3 supervisor at dumping ground, garbage processing plant and motor garage.

·        Revised rough cost estimate for construction of boundary wall, providing and fixing shed and paver blocks in shamshan ghat village Maloya at an estimated cost of Rs. 46.13 lacs.

·        The committee approved proposal for Multi level parking at Manimajra near Rana Ki Haveli through calling expression of Interest.

·        The F&CC approved agenda regarding signing MoU with school of public health, PGIMER Chandigarh for Phase-II project on capacity building training of street vendors on Health and Hygiene at an estimated cost of Rs. 49.40 lacs.

·        The committee approved transportation of legacy waste from garbage processing plant to dumping ground, Dadumajra at an estimated cost of Rs. 48 lacs.

·        Rough cost estimate for the work of rejuvenation of the existing village ponds at 3 villages Kaimbala, Sarangpur and Khuda Ali Sher at an estimated cost of Rs. 48.94 lacs.

·        The committee approved agenda for renting out vacant kiosk No1 and 2 at Japnese Garden sector 31 through inviting verka/vita or Amul etc.

·        The committee also accorded approval for amendment in terms and conditions of kiosks at shivalik garden, Manimajra, to be rented out through open auction.

MCC joins Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge competition

Chandigarh, November 19:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh joined the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge competition to be held between 243 cities throughout the country from November 19, 2020 and May, 2021. The competition launched by Sh. Hardeep Singh Puri, MoS, I/C, Housing and Urban Affairs, Govt. of India through webinar from New Delhi, has been joined by Sh. K.K. The Challenge, aptly launched on the occasion of World Toilet Day, is aimed at preventing ‘hazardous cleaning’ of sewers and septic tanks and promote their mechanized cleaning.

Explaining the contours of the Challenge, the Commissioner said that the challenge will focus extensively on creating citizen awareness on this critical issue along with infrastructure creation for mechanized cleaning and capacity building of workforce.

He said that the actual on-ground assessment of participating cities will be conducted in May 2021 by an independent agency and results of the same will be declared on 15 August 2021. Cities will be awarded in three sub-categories – with population of more than 10 lakhs, 3-10 lakhs and upto 3 lakhs, with a total prize money of Rs 52 crores to be given to winning cities across all categories.

सांस संबंधी बीमारियां भारत में छुपी हुई महामारी

चंडीगढ़, 19 नवंबर ( ): फेफड़ों के खराब होने से संंबंधित करोनिक आब्सट्रक्टिव पलमोनेरी डिजीज (सीओपीडी) के बारे जागरूकता पैदा करने के लिए पारस अस्पताल पंचकूला के डाक्टरों की एक टीम ने इस रोग से संबंधित कई तथ्यों तथा काल्पनिक बातों के बारे जानकारी दी। इस अवसर पर फेफड़ों संबंधी सीनियर सलहाकार डा. एस.गुप्ता व सीनियर मेडीसन कंस्लटेंट डा. सुमित जैन मौजूद थे।  उन्होंने बताया कि पूरी दुनिया में लाखों लोग सी.ओ.पी.डी. रोगों से पीडि़त हैं, जिनमें एमफिसिमा, सोजिश, ना ठीक होने वाला दमा तथा सोजिश के कुछ अन्य लक्ष्ण शामिल हैं। करोनिक आब्सट्रक्टिव पलमोनेरी डिजीज (सीओपीडी ) फेफड़ों संबंधी सभी बीमारियों के लिए प्रयोग किया जाने वाला आम नाम है। इस बीमारी की पहचान सांस लेने में तकलीफ से होती है।

करोनिक आब्सट्रक्टिव पलमोनेरी डिजीज (सीओपीडी) रोग तथा इसके इलाज पर प्रकाश डालते हुए अस्पताल पंचकूला के फेफड़ों संबंधी सीनियर सलहाकार डा. एस.के. गुप्ता ने कहा कि दिल की बीमारियां तथा कैंसर के बाद सीओपीडी दुनिया में सबसे ज्यादा लोगों की मौत का कारण बनता है। ज्यादातर लोग सांस लेने में तकलीफ व खांसी को अपनी बढ़ती उम्र से जोड़ लेते हैं। हो सकता है कि इस बीमारी के शुरूआती दौर में आपको इसके लक्षणों के बारे पता न लगे। सी.ओ.पी.डी. रोग कई वर्षों तक बगैर लक्ष्णों से भी रह सकता है। जब यह रोग बहुत ज्यादा बढ़ जाता है, उस समय आपको इसके लक्ष्ण देखने को मिलते हैं। इसकी पहचान फेफड़ों के अंदर तथा बाहर हवा के दौरे में रूकावट से होती है, जिससे सांस लेना मुश्किल हो जाता है।


पारस अस्पताल पंचकूला में इनटरनल मेडीसन के सीनियर सलाहकार डा. सुमित जैन ने अपने अनुभव सांझे करते हुए कहा कि सी.ओ.पी.डी. आम तौर पर 40 साल से ज्यादा उम्र के लोगों में देखने को मिलता है। इस रोग से पीडि़त हर कोई नही, पर ज्यादातर (90 प्रतिशत) लोग ऐसे होते हैं, जो कि धूम्रपान करते हैं। सीओपीडी ऐसे लोगों को भी हो सकता है, जो लंबे समय तक फेफड़ों के लिए खतरनाक हालात जैसे रसायनों, धूल या धुएं में तथा चूल्हे के सामने काम करते रहे हैं। ऐसे लोगों को भी यह रोग हो सकता है, जिन्होंने कभी धूम्रपान नहीं किया या वह कभी लंबे समय तक प्रदूषण भरे वातावरण में नहीं रहे। भारत में सी.ओ.पी.डी. की दर 5.5 से 7.55 प्रतिशत है। बीते समय दौरान हुए सर्वेक्षण में बताया गया है कि पुरुषों में सी.ओ.पी.डी. की अधिक से अधिक दर 22 प्रतिशत है, जबकि महिलाओं ये यह 19 प्रतिशत है।


इस अवसर पर डा. सुमित जैन ने कहा कि इस रोग से पीडि़त लोगों को थोड़ा दूर चलने-फिरने में सांस चढ़ जाता है तथा यह बहुत जल्द बीमारियों तथा निमोनिया का शिकार हो जाते हैं। अकसर, पीडि़तों को रोजाना 24 घटें तक आक्सीजन की जरूरत रहती है। यदि आप में एफीसिमा या सोजिश की समस्या है तो आप सी.ओ.पी.डी. से पीडि़त हैं। सी.ओ.पी.डी. के लंबे समय रहने से दिल का बायां तरफ का हिस्सा बड़ा हो जाता है, जिससे अंत में व्यक्ति की मौत हो जाती है। उन्होंने कहा कि सी.ओ.पी.डी. का कोई स्थाई इलाज नहीं है, पर रोग से शरीर का ज्यादा नुकसान होने से बचाने तथा जीवन का स्तर बेहतर करने के तरीके मौजूद हैं।

डा. एस.के. गुप्ता ने यह भी कहा कि जब सर्दी आती है तो सी.ओ.पी.डी. से पीडि़त लोगों का स्वास्थ्य खराब हो जाता है। उनको ज्यादा  ठंड, जुकाम तथा अन्य सांस संबंधी बीमारियां होती हैं। इस रोग के लक्ष्ण सॢदयों दौरान ज्यादा बढ़ जाते हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि फेफड़े खून में आक्सीजन मिलाने का काम करते हैं तथा दिल खून का दौरा चलाता हैं, जिससे आक्सीजन शरीर के अलग-अलग हिस्सों में पहुंचती हैं। तापमान घटने से सांस नली सिकुड़ जाती है, जिससे खून का दौरा रूकता है तथा दिल को आक्सीजन नहीं मिलती। दिल का ज्यादा तेजी से धडक़ता है तथा ब्लड प्रैशर बढ़ जाता है। इसलिए ठंड के मौसम में सांस प्रणाली से ज्यादा भार पड़ता है। इसलिए यह जरूरी है कि जब भी आपको इस तरह के लक्षण दिखें आप डाक्टर को जल्द से जल्द संपर्क करें।

Seniors of English Deptt,PU Interact with The Freshers Online in the Ice Breaking Session

Chandigarh November 19, 2020

The Department of English and Cultural Studies has become the first department in Panjab University to organize an online “Ice Breaking Session”  under the guidance of Prof. Deepti Gupta, Chairperson. This event was an effort by the students of MA English Final Year to welcome the new batch.

Prakhar Sinha, Class Representative, MA Final Year welcomed everyone and introduced his classmates who were serving as the speakers and mentors, to their juniors.

The new students introduced themselves with their respective career aspirations and academic backgrounds. They were high on energy and posed several questions about the department and its academics. Senior students enthusiastically resolved their queries and briefed them about various highlights of the department. COVID-19 had put students through challenging times but the Ice Breaker and a hearty conversation cheered everyone up. Marking pattern, Hostel admission procedure, Optional subject choice related questions were the most frequent ones. Many of them were anxious about the new syllabus introduced in 2019, but final year students reassured them with the promise of thorough guidance. The pandemic didn’t allow the senior students to meet and greet the new batch, but technology allowed them to connect which left everyone ecstatic. Senior students spoke about the kinds of challenges they faced when preparing for exams and provided juniors with study strategy and tips to score well. Inspiring examples of the class toppers were given to motivate juniors for meritorious academic performance.

The boarding students spoke about plenty of student accommodations available for students who don’t qualify for a hostel. Senior students discussed the major attractions of Punjab University like Annual Fests, Departmental events, Campus life and the liberal hostel life. New students were reassured about the University’s institutional support, gender inclusive space, innumerous platforms for talent and an equal environment for all. Regular initiatives taken by the senior students to bond with junior students were also discussed in detail. Seniors concluded by saying that all students should support each other.

Chandigarh, November 18:- Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, Chandigarh today launched the facility of issuing clearance certificate in respect of residential property tax paid by the residents of Chandigarh without making any request.

Chandigarh, November 18:- Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, Chandigarh today launched eAwas scheme for government houses of MC pool at command and control centre, MCC office premises in presence of Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Anil Garg, Additional Commissioner and other concerned officers of MCC.

While speaking on the occasion the Mayor said that the employees of Municipal Corporation can now submit their Online application for allotment/change/mutual exchange of MC Pool Houses through website www.eawas.mcchandigarh.gov.in/ of duly filled in and forwarded by the Head of Department/Head of Office. The applications received under this Rule on or before 20th day of a Calendar Month will be considered for allotment in the succeeding month. The applications received on 21st day to the last Month will be considered for allotment in the succeeding month. The applications received on 21st day to the last date of a calendar month will be entertained/considered for allotment after the succeeding month.

Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that the application form will be examined by the House Allotment Committee, MCC. In case of incomplete application form or the application form of ineligible applicants the case will be rejected straight way by the House Allotment Committee and the applicant will require to submit afresh Online application on the official website. After considering the eligible applications, the seniority lists shall be updated every month, on the website. The eligible applicant will be able check the status of his/her seniority list of type of house for which he/she has submitted the online application. Henceforth, the manual allotment will not be done and existing manual application pending in HAC, MCC is hereby quashed, he added.

                   Online update report of vacant Government houses fit for allotment/fit for occupation, belonging to MC Pool will be updated to enable the eligible applicants to ascertain the vacancy report of Government houses. The procedure for allotment is as under:-

1.    The allotment of vacant Government houses will be made through the “bidding system” every month.

2.    The eligible applicants existing in the current seniority list will submit maximum three options/bids for allotment of a Govt. house of the type applied for from 1st to 8th of every month.

3.    The allotment of Government houses shall be made to the senior most applicant keeping in view their bids as per seniority list. The applicants, who are not allotted Govt. houses after bidding, shall have the option to submit/exercise their bid from 1st to 8th of the succeeding month of the calendar year.

4.    No allotment will be made to the eligible applicants who have not participated in the “bid” for allotment of Government house and no written request for allotment of particular houses shall be entertained/ considered by the House Allotment Committee, Chandigarh, in future.

5.    The intimation with regard to the allotment of Government houses to the successful applicant by way of bidding system will be given through SMS.

6.     After getting the allotment order of the Government house, the applicant shall contact the Work Inspector, Occupation/Vacation of the area concerned for taking over the possession of the allotted house within 14 days from the date of issue of the allotment order.

The Mayor and Commissioner also declared result for the online applications received from all employees during the period of 1st to 8th November, 2020 and today on dated 18.11.2020 at 12.00 noon.
