Holiday Declared in PU Regional Centres/Affiliated Colleges Located in Punjab

It is hereby notified that the Offices/Institutions/Regional Centres/ Rural Centres/Affiliated Colleges of Panjab University located in the State of Punjab will remain closed on Saturday, 1st May 2021 on account of 400th Birthday of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji in terms of Punjab Govt. Notification No. 1/175013/2021 dated 29.04.2021. However, all meetings and examinations will be held as per schedule announced earlier.

MCC uploads details of vehicles and staff for collection of garbage from quarantine houses & containment zones

Chandigarh, April 29:- The citizens of Chandigarh are hereby informed that the details of vehicles and staff deployed in different areas of Chandigarh for garbage collection from quarantine houses and containment zones is uploaded on the official website of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh under public notices section i.e. http://mcchandigarh.gov.in .

As per the orders of Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC in case, if garbage is not lifted from quarantine houses/containment zones, citizens can contact the officials directly as per list. However for further information following officials may be contacted.

Water Supply & Sewerage Disposal Committee meeting held

Chandigarh, April 29:- A meeting of Water Supply & Sewerage disposal committee, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Shakti Parkash Devshali, councilor and attended other members of committee namely Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Sh. Jagtar Singh, Smt. Ravinder Kaur Gujral, Sh. Vijay Premy, Executive Engineer, MCPH and other concerned officers of Public Health wing.

          During the meeting the committee members discussed various important agenda items and decided that a policy be drafted to make the system for getting new water supply connection easy, especially in villages and colonies.

          The committee members also decided that all the properties under the Water supply department shall be covered with boundary wall for safety and security purposes.

          The members accorded approval to rough cost estimate for providing leakproof arrangements for overhead tank for avoiding wastage of potable water and providing drainage system beneath OHSR (over head storage reservoir) at sector 4, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 24.52 lacs.

          The committee also approved rough cost estimate for repair and renovation of tubewell chamber and construction of boundary wall at tubewell/booster part-13, village kaimbwala, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 10.87 lacs.

Mayor & Commissioner visits Garbage Processing Plant, inspects Legacy mining at dumping ground

Chandigarh, April 29:- City Mayor Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma and Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh today visited garbage processing plant to take stock of the ongoing work, compost plant and progress of legacy mining at dumping site at Dadumajra.

During the visit, they were accompanied by Joint Commissioner Sh. Sorabh Arora, Chief Engineer Sh. Shailender Singh, Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Amrit Warring and other concerned Executive Engineers and SDEs of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

The Mayor and Commissioner asked the Executive Engineer, Solid Waste Management (SWM) to take necessary steps for proper disposal of compost generated at the plant. The team also visited legacy mining project at dumping site and the Mayor appreciated the enhancement of conveyer belts from 3 to 5 over there at the project site to mine the waste. He asked the concerned officials to complete this project within stipulated time period.

The SWM officials briefed the team about various scientific steps being taken for improvisation of garbage management at the site and scientific process of compost plant.

Chandigarh Streets for People Challenge: Design competition

Chandigarh, April 29:- Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh-cum-CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. distributed awards here today at CSCL office to the winners of Street design competition organized as part of the ongoing national Streets for People Challenge, launched by the Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. Sh. N.P. Sharma, Chief General Manager, CSCL was also present during the award ceremony.

Team CHA6024 was awarded the first prize for coming up with innovative ideas to revamp Chandigarh’s Sector 17 – Rose garden Underpass and Team CHA1058 was awarded the first prize for its plans to transform the Sector-15 V4 road as part of the competition.

While sharing about the competition, the CEO, CSCL said that with an aim to facilitate India’s green recovery from COVID-19, the Streets for People Challenge seeks to inspire Indian cities to reimagine streets as safe, healthy, and happy public spaces for all. The ITDP India Programme is supporting the Smart Cities Mission in the successful implementation of the Streets for People Challenge. The Challenge will develop flagship walking initiatives across Indian cities with a focus on placemaking and liveability.

He further said that an essential component of the Challenge’s TEST-LEARN-SCALE approach, the design competition has been conceptualised to encourage quick, innovative, and easy-to-test economical solutions from India’s dynamic urban designers, professionals, and students. The competition sought to inspire designers to come up with design solutions that prioritise core principles such as fair distribution of space, safety and security, comfort, sensitivity to the local context, liveability, and environmental sustainability.

Sh. Yadav said that Chandigarh has pioneered a series of initiatives to improve streets and public spaces for its citizens. With its continued focus on this transformative path, the city launched the design competition to reimagine its streets on 1st December, 2020. The competition provided an opportunity for top urban designers, young professionals, and students from across the country to create pedestrian-friendly streets through innovative, inclusive, and quick solutions. The jury for the competition consisted of City officials, RWA members and academic experts.

Chandigarh selected the following teams as its top three design solutions for each site:

USOL organizes Webinar on Dr. B.R. AMBEDKAR

University School of Open Learning, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a webinar on the topic “DR. B.R. AMBEDKAR: CONTRIBUTION AND IDEA FOR NATION BUILDING ”, on the occasion of 130th Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratan, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar through Google Meet to deliberate upon the philosophy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

            Prof. B.B. Malik, Dean and Professor of Sociology, Ambedkar School of Social Science, Babasahib Bhimrao Ambedkar University, focused upon the significant ideas related to Ambekrite ideology such as “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” and also Social Justice. He emphasised that for Ambedkarite liberty of thought was of utmost importance and he has vouched for the same in the constitution as well.

            Prof. Emanuel Nahar, Professor in Political Science, Chairperson, Punjab State Commission for Minorities, Government of Punjab also deliberated upon the various aspects of the Ambedkarite philosophy. He was of the view that Ambedkar’s ideas are being used to attain political mileage by the political leaders in contemporary times. That is why it is important to make students aware of his philosophy, he added.

            Prof. Madhurima Verma, Chairperson, USOL, welcomed the resource persons and talked about the rationale and significance of the event while the theme of the webinar was introduced by Dr. Anil, the organising secretary of the event and Astt. Prof. in the Dept. of Public Admin, USOL.

            Prof. Devinder Singh, Secretary to the Vice Chancellor and co-ordinator Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh discussed the contribution of Dr. Ambedkar in making the Indian Constitution. He emphasized that it was the role only an intellectual and learned man like him could perform.

            Dr. Ravinder Kaur, Astt. Prof., Dept. of English, USOL proposed a vote of thanks by appreciating one and all who contributed and participated in the discussion.         The programme was concluded by comments of Dr. Rajni the Convenor, SC/ST cell, USOL who also acted as a mediator of the event. Around 100 students and faculty members joined the webinar which concluded by questions answer sessions from the students.

Mayor inaugurates green belt at Mauli Jagran

While sharing information about the green belt, the Mayor said that this green belt having 1 acre of area has been rejuvenated at a cost of Rs. 10 lacs. Iron railing, footpath, landscaping by providing grass, decorative plants and flowering shrubs etc. have been provided in this green belt.

Surinder Mohan Nayyar father of CA Vikram Nayyar, officiating Registrar, and father-in-law of Professor Chanchal Narang, University Institute of Legal Studies, left for his heavenly abode due to Covid 19 on 25.4.2021. He was 77 years of age, resident of Khanna and survived by his wife, two sons- CA Vikram Nayyar and Nitin Nayyar, daughter in Laws, Daughter, Son in Law and Grand Children. The cremation is held today at Khanna under strict Covid protocols.

PANJAB UNIVERISTY CELEBRATES WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY BY LAUNCHING TWO BOOKS BY ITS ALUMNI

On the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA) organised an online event to launch two books named, “12 sweet & sour years in China” and “Destiny of an Alien Life” written by PU alumni Sh. Alok Joshi and Dr. Jadab Sharma, respectively.

Highlighting the importance and the genesis of World Book and Copyright day, Prof. Anupama Sharma, Dean Alumni Relations in her welcome address, 

expressed that during the last year when most countries have seen periods of confinement and people have had to limit their time spent outside, books have proved to be powerful tools to combat isolation, reinforce ties between people, and expand their horizons, while stimulating the minds and creativity.

Prof. VR Sinha,Dean of University Instructions paid tribute to all the authors who contributed to cultural development and welcomed both the authors of the day. He highlighted that we can remove loneliness from our life by reading books during such a tough time of pandemic. He thanked the esteemed authors for choosing the platform of PUAA to showcase their talent. He beckoned other authors, artists, creative persons to use this platform liberally for mutually synergistic gains as PUAA offers a wide canvas to give wings to their imaginations. He also congratulated PUAA for organising the event and advised to separately hold discussion on issues of infringement, piracy, policy, ethics, and data pertaining to the use of copyright. Prof. Sinha said that today when electronic gadgets affect our minds to the extent that we get bored in a matter of minutes, a good book, which can capture and sustain our interest for a few hours is invaluable. We read and then we grow our minds, our thinking not only becomes critical, we also become open to other viewpoints.

Mr. Alok Joshi, a PU alumnus of Department of English and author of the book, 12 sweet & sour years in China informed the audience about his book. He expressed that in this book he has shared the good and strange experience of his life in China which spans over 12 years, starting near Bejing Olympics and ending just before COVID19. The 9 Chapters book is a non-fiction work and quite relatable for the common people. He also talked about the mindset of Chinese people about Indians in his book. Mr. Joshi took queries from the audience and shared his motivation behind writing this book.

Then, Dr. Jadab Sharma, Faculty, Centre for nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Panjab University who writes with his pen name, Weeping Rose, made the audience aware of his book, Destiny of an Alien Life. He shared his life experiences and informed that this book is a mixture of Science fiction and spirituality. How a group of people met at a strange place and how they survived in those conditions. He expressed that in the initial 3-4 chapters he has tried to build up the plot and in the later chapters, he has given his experiences. He urged the audience to  read the book and give their honest opinion. It was followed by some enthusiastic comments and questions from the audience.

Chief guest Prof. VR Sinha released both the books and thanked both the authors.  Prof. Anupama Sharma, presented the vote of thanks and concluded the meeting.
