PU Extends Measures to Curb Corona till 9th June

The Committee constituted for  reviewing the status of COVID-19 cases in Panjab University,  met today and on the basis of recommendations, the competent authority has approved following measures to contain the spread of ongoing Corona pandemic, to be observed by all the offices of the Panjab University from 01.06.2021 to 09.06.2021.: – 

1.    The Office timings of the University shall be observed from 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. up to 09.06.2021 with 50% staff strength. However, the Controlling Officers/Heads of the Branches/Departments may call the staff beyond 2.00 p.m., depending upon the exigency of the work, by staggering the timings, while ensuring that the attendance of staff at any time should not exceed the stipulated limit of 50% of strength.  Officers of the level of Office Superintendent and above shall attend the office on daily basis.

2.    The remaining non-attending 50% staff shall work from home under the instructions of their Controlling Officers and they shall remain available through e-modes, i.e., telephone, e-mail, video conference, etc.

3.    No staff shall leave the station without the prior sanction of the Controlling Officer.

4.    There shall not be any public dealing up to 09.06.2021 except with the prior appointment of the concerned HOD that too for urgent issues only.

5.    With respect to Field Workers, the concerned Heads of the Department/Office may take a decision to stagger their timings/strength, if required, keeping in view the COVID-19 protocols.

Session on the ‘Significance of E resources in Research’ by PU

An online session on the ‘significance of E resources in Research’ was organized by the Department of Political Science which was open for the researchers of Panjab University departments. Dr Neeraj K Singh, Deputy Librarian of the AC Joshi Library, Panjab University as the resource person made a presentation enabling the researchers, many of them in their hometowns due to Covid situation, to have an introduction to the facilities available in the university library . He made them aware of the library automation and RFID system developed by the university library.

 More importantly, he also gave them hands-on instruction as to how to avail these very useful e-resources available through the university which Panjab university has got access to by paying huge user fees. These include the UGC-CARE journals including the international Journals published by SAGE, Cambridge University Press, among others.  He referred to the significance of online database in getting access to the research materials available on the Panjab University platforms.

Besides, Neeraj Singh gave the researchers a live demonstration of several login platforms logging which they can have open access to the thousands of research articles and reference books without paying any user charges on their own.

Biogas Plant at BH 3 Inaugurated

Chandigarh May 31, 2021

A Biogas Plant was today inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Raj Kumar at Boys’ Hostel No. 3, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

It was built at the cost of around 30 lakhs by a company accredited with BARC, Mumbai. Prof. SK Tomar, Prof. Sukhbir Kaur, Deans Student Welfare, Prof. Manu Sharma, UIET, Prof. Ganga Ram, Director CIL and Warden of the hostel Dr. JS Sehrawat graced the occasion which was held by following proper COVID-19 protocol.

 This biogas plant has a capacity to process about one ton of food-waste and other biological materials for generation of biogas through the process of bimethenation. The food-waste for this plant is to be arranged by Horticulture Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh, mainly collected as food-waste from different hostels of PU itself. The plant will be run by the firm for next few years which will cater to the gas requirements of Mess and Canteen of Boys’ Hostel No. 3, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

 Prof. Raj Kumar congratulated the team for generating such ideas of innovative work for generation of green energy which is the need of hour these days. He stressed that such projects should be extended soon to meet the energy requirements of other university hostels too. Prof. Raj Kumar interacted with the experts, XEN office engineers, the Dean Student Welfare and warden BH-3 to explore the possibilities of utilizing solar energy too in the university. The worthy Vice-Chancellor ignited the gas stove, run on the gas generated from the Biogas plant itself from the food waste arranged by the firm from different hotels of Chandigarh and through repeated requests to the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh by the Warden Dr. JS Sehrawat.

MASTER TRAINER ON MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MANAGEMENT (MHM)  FROM GERMANY ADDRESSED PANJAB UNIVERSITY STUDENTS 

To mark the World Menstrual Hygiene Care Day, the students were imparted with the basic information on Menstrual Hygiene Management by Komal Ramday from Germany during a special webinar organized by Centre for Social Work and NSS, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Komal before leaving for Germany,  served as a Master trainer for MHM training programs with Water Supply Sanitation Collaborative Council, New Delhi for three years. She had acted as a resource person for more than hundreds of training sessions in different parts of our country.  In her interaction, she focused on Breaking the silence about Menstruation in our country, as it is still considered as a taboo here. She tried to explain this by citing various examples from different states of the country.  She shared that communication is the key to break the iceť on Menstruation. She also focused on the importance of info graphic materials available to facilitate our work.

She appealed to the educational institutions to come forward and start talking about all such issues and put them into the mainstream agenda.

She also shared about the environmental friendly options available in the market which can be used as an absorbent. She also highlighted the role of Social Work students to demystify the myths associated with it in the society. She said that with correct information only, the social worker’s can ignite the light of awareness among the masses.

A basic orientation session prior to this interaction was also organised by Namrata Sharma, Megha Mittal, Lagan Wadhwa, Sunaina Nain, Lakshya  Verma, Tasveer Kaur, Muskan Soni and others from MSW 2nd year students.  They also shared the prevalent myths and clarified the misconceptions about Menstruation. Babita Sharma, Robin, Arpna Rattu, Jashanjot and Aashima Kajla, PhD scholars at Centre for Social Work  also shared their experiences among the audiences.

The students were screened with informative videos also by the trainers for their better understanding. The other aspects related to Menstruation were also discussed which included how to respond to health issues during menstruation, what options are available in the market other than sanitary pads like silicon she- cups, tampons and how to properly dispose off the used material etc.

This programme was organised as a part of the MHM campaign being run by the Centre for Social Work with the mentorship of Dr Gaurav Gaur since January 2018. He shared that till today, we have touched more than 9000+ school, college and University students in this campaign.

TEC PU  organises webinar to Develop Technology while Studying 

Technology Enabling Centre (TEC) of Panjab University organized a webinar titled “Develop a Technology while doing your degree” through online mode. 

The Vice Chancellor of Panjab University Prof Rajkumar in his address, emphasized on requirement to do innovation on domestic needs of our local ecosystem and assured participants that Panjab University will give full support. 

Coordinator of first year Dr Kalpana Dahiya apprised students that soon they will be undergoing a training titled “Innovative Product Design” in which students will have to make “proof-of-the-concept” projects.

 Dr Shankar Sehgal, incharge of Btech projects (mechanical), urged students to carry same project from initial semesters to their final semester. This will bring continuity in the project work and quality of projects will appreciably improve.

Professor Manu Sharma, coordinator of TEC shared several cases in which innovation by common men has brought positive change. Keynote speaker of the event, Er Sudhir Dua stressed upon need to develop scientific temperament while doing engineering degree. He further exhorted students to extensively visit industry and assess requirements of industry on which innovation is required.

 About 400 students from several branches of engineering attended this webinar.

Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Panjab Branch in association with University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences & DST funded Technology Enabling Centre (TEC) Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a webinar on “Pharmaceutical Production Excellence in Regulatory Scenario” by Mr. Sanjay Kumar Sinha, President-Formulations, IPCA Laboratories Ltd. under the aegis of UIPS Expert Talk Series,today. 

Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson,UIPS; Secretary, IPA Panjab Branch and President IIC-IPS extended a cordial welcome to the audience and introduced the distinguished speaker.

Professor O. P. Katare, President, IPA, Punjab Branch emphasized upon the need for quality production of drugs under high pressure global regulations.

Professor V R Sinha, Dean of University Instruction,  Panjab University,  highlighted the  India’s  contribution by value (20 %)  to the global generics, with Indian products contributing to 40 % by volume of US drugs. He stressed upon the immense opportunity for India to take a leapfrog using the impetus provided by Covid-19 and to truly play the role of “pharmacy of the world”. 

Mr. Sanjay Kumar Sinha shared his expert knowledge and views on how process understanding and streamlining; risk based thinking; decision making and establishment of a continuous improvement culture can enhance production excellence. Further it encompasses the need to serve patients by providing safe and effective medicines without an interruption in supply. He emphasized upon the fact that digital transformation, focused equipment and process improvement is going to provide a huge boost to process excellence in pharmaceutical industry. At the end he sensitized that it is high time to revisit the role of Pharmacists in healthcare.  

Dr Vandana Patrawale, Professor ICT Mumbai; Professor Sanjay Jain, Head of the Department, Sagar University, M.P. and Dr Rajinder Harna Ex Assistant Drug Controller were among the distinguished guests, who steered the discussion to several relevant points of future scope of pharmacy professionals and environment control in pharma industry. 

Professor Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, Ex President, IPA, Punjab Branch  concluded the session by sharing his prudent thoughts. 

Over 100 participants attended the webinar. The session evoked excellent response among participants witnessed by an interactive Q/A session.

Online Workshop on “Improving Psychosocial skills during Covid-19 Pandemic”

Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education(MGNCRE), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, GOI in collaboration with National Service Scheme, Panjab University organised an Online workshop entitled “Guidance on Psychosocial skills to Helpers Workshop” ,today.

The workshop was hosted by NSS Programme Coordinator, Prof. Ashwani Koul along with subject expert Dr. Ranbir Singh Battan from MGNCRE as a keynote speaker.

Dr. Ranbir stressed upon the idea of motivating the NSS volunteers for their voluntary participation in the areas around them for helping the corona victims as covid helpers. Workshop focused on the creation of teams of volunteers who will work with the support of hospitals and NGOs to help covid-19 patients by providing them different services.

NSS Unit of Dr. Sucha Singh and NSS Open Unit, UT Chandigarh offered their services to disseminate right information about covid-19, helping covid patients with food and other services and helping people to get the covid vaccine to minimize the risk of covid-19. Dr. Battan also briefed volunteers about how to identify social problems in the post COVID-19 scenario and then how to work in teams to tackle the problems faced by different people.

Sanitation Committee meeting held

Chandigarh, May 28:- A meeting of Sanitation Committee, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Bharat Kumar and attended by Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor and other members of committee namely Sh. Jagtar Singh, Sh. Shakti Parkash Devshali, Smt. Asha Jaswal, Ms. Shipra Bansal, Smt. Sunita Dhawan, Sh. Charanjiv Singh, Smt. Sheela Devi, Smt. Farmila, Dr. Amrit Warring, MOH and concerned Chief Sanitary Inspectors of MCC.

During the meeting the committee members discussed various important issues besides according approval to agenda items.

·        The committee members asked the concerned officers to remove dry leaves from the road berms/road sides. The MOH apprised the committee members that the MCC has ordered to hire sufficient tractor trollys to be engaged for lifting of dry leaves and horticulture waste throughout city and the backlog will be cleared within 15 days.

·        The committee asked the MOH to prepare proper plan to lift horticulture waste from households and road berms from city.

·        The Mayor requested all the councilors to participate in the month long Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched on 20th May and get their areas waste free and malba free till June 19th.

·        The committee members said that balance of manpower deputed throughout city for sanitation purpose be maintained area wise and asked all the Chief Sanitary Inspectors to submit specified requirement of manpower and deployed present strength at their respective areas for cleaning of roads and other areas.

·        The committee members discussed the door to door waste collection of garbage issue of sector 21 and asked the MOH to bring agenda about this after seeking legal opinion into this matter. The committee decided that Chairman of Sanitation Committee and Medical Officer of Health will hold meeting with the representatives of door to door waste collectors of Sector 21 and sort out the issue at the earliest.

·        The committee members pointed out that the Sub Inspectors of sanitation department will ensure waste collection from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors of households by the waste collectors to avoid complaints of citizens.

·        The committee asked the concerned CSIs to ensure proper feedback from the citizens/households in regard to door to door waste collection system.

·        The members were of the view that percentage of death cases be fixed in new appointments to avoid any kind of discrimination with the other categories.

·        The committee also recommended enhancement of 1 liter mustered oil, 2 big bathing soaps and 1 kg Gur in addition to already fixed quota to the Safaikarmacharis.

Road Committee meeting held

Chandigarh, May 28:- A meeting of Road Committee, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Dalip Sharma and attended by other members of committee namely Smt. Heera Negi, Smt. Gurbax Rawat, Sh. Bharat Kumar, Haji Mohd. Khurshid Ali and concerned officers of MCC.

During the meeting the committee members discussed various important issues besides according approval to agenda items.

·        The committee members asked the concerned officers to check feasibility of parking at green belt sector 51.

·        The members asked the concerned officers to repair the left out works of footpath/road berms after laying of pipes/fiber etc. throughout city.

·        The committee asked the concerned officers to get the dug up roads repaired, where public health work have been completed.

·        The members said that special drive be carried out to remove malba from the road sides.

·        The committee asked to prepare a list of due roads to be re-carpetted during winter session/this financial year.

·        The members asked the officers to bring an agenda item regarding sound proofing of halls in all community centres to avoid noice pollution during the weddings/functions.

·        The committee asked the concerned officers to bring an agenda item regarding shortage of Junior Engineers and other officials required in field level.

·        Rough Cost Estimate for construction of approach roads for plot No. 779-796 for type-V accommodation and plot No. 159 & 168 type-III accommodation sector 29-A, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 7.32 lacs.

·        Rough Cost Estimate for providing and fixing GI guard railing infront of Market adjoining V-4 road, sector 40 C&D, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 5.74 lacs.
