Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh addressed  around 100 Assistant Professors of the University today in a virtual meeting. He stressed that the faculty  are the pillars of the University who can play a great role in the enhancement of the perception of PU . PU VC urged all to join hands in taking a leap in next three years for the University.

In his address, he said that the need of the hour for the  University is to bring in a professional attitude by changing the mindset and involving more corporate’s perspective into teaching . He further stressed to  create a niche for PU not only on national level but also on international level. He urged on giving research orientation to students right from the beginning of their career. It is important for the faculty to tap the potential of the students. He also urged them to take multi-disciplinary projects and focus on patents and citations. He informed that a nodal officer has been appointed by PU for filing of patents. They were also asked to explore collaborations with a focus on commercial deliverables. He brought the point of contributing in social initiatives for the society in order to provide holistic development to the students. PU VC asked them to focus on getting their research published in High Impact Journals.

Various suggestions were taken from Dean International Students, Dean Alumni Relations, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Director, CIL/SAIF, Director, Computer Centre and other Assistant Professors present, for enhancing the visibility of PU in the coming times. चंडीगढ़, 16 जून: अप्वाइंटमेंट कमेटी ऑफ दि कैबिनेट भारत सरकार द्वारा मंजूरी के उपरांत केंद्रीय आयूष मंत्रालय ने प्रोफैसर (वैद्य) राकेश शर्मा को बोर्ड ऑफ एथिक्स एंड रजिस्ट्रेशन फॉर इंडियन सिस्टम ऑफ मेडीसन के अध्यक्ष के रूप में नियुक्त कर दिया है। यह बोर्ड नेशनल कमीशन फार इंडियन सिस्टम ऑफ मेडीसन के अधीन आता है।

प्रोफैसर राकेश शर्मा 12 वर्ष पंजाब सरकार में आयुर्वेद के डायरेक्टर रहे हैं तथा वह आयुर्वेद के क्षेत्र में पीएचडी हैं, जिनका 22 वर्ष अध्यापन तथा 36 वर्ष वैद्यगी का तजुर्बा है। वह पंजाब हेल्थ सिस्टम कार्पोरेशन के डायरेक्टर, मैंबर सैक्टरी स्टेट मैडीसनल प्लांटस बोर्ड, पंजाब के आयुर्वेद तथा यूनानी मेडीसन बोर्ड के चेयरमैन तथा स्टेट ड्रग लाइसैंस अथारिटी भी रह चुके हैं।

चंडीगढ़, 15 जून- हरियाणा के उपमुख्यमंत्री श्री दुष्यंत चौटाला ने कहा कि हरियाणा देश का पहला राज्य बन गया है जहां भवन एवं अन्य निर्माण कार्यों से जुड़े पंजीकृत मजदूरों को उनकी योजनाओं का लाभ ‘फर्स्ट-इन,फर्स्ट-आऊट’ (प्रथम आवेदन का समाधान पहले) के आधार पर मिलेगा। ‘हरियाणा भवन एवं अन्य सन्निर्माण कर्मकार कल्याण बोर्ड’ द्वारा तैयार किया गया ‘सैंट्रल प्रोसेसिंग सिस्टम’ का सॉफ्टवेयर मजदूरों के कल्याण में मील का पत्थर साबित होगा।

         डिप्टी सीएम, जिनके पास श्रम एवं रोजगार का प्रभार भी है, आज यहां ‘हरियाणा भवन एवं अन्य सन्निर्माण कर्मकार कल्याण बोर्ड’ के ‘सैंट्रल प्रोसेसिंग सिस्टम’ को लांच करने के बाद श्रम विभाग तथा बोर्ड के अधिकारियों को संबोधित कर रहे थे। इस अवसर पर श्रम एवं रोजगार विभाग के राज्य मंत्री श्री अनूप धानक भी उपस्थित थे।

         श्री दुष्यंत चौटाला, जो ‘हरियाणा भवन एवं अन्य सन्निर्माण कर्मकार कल्याण बोर्ड’ के चेयरमैन भी हैं, ने कहा कि इस ‘सैंट्रल प्रोसेसिंग सिस्टम’ से जहां कार्य में पारदर्शिता आएगी वहीं भ्रष्टाचार पर भी नकेल कसी जा सकेगी। उन्होंने नए सिस्टम को एक ऐतिहासिक कदम बताते हुए कहा कि हरियाणा देश का पहला राज्य है जहां अपने पंजीकृत श्रमिकों को दी जाने वाली कल्याणकारी योजनाओं के लिए ऑनलाइन आवेदन किया जाएगा। जो श्रमिक पहले आवेदन करेगा उसके आवेदन पर पहले कार्रवाई की जाएगी। अधिकारियों में काम का ऑटोमैटिक समान बंटवारा होगा, ‘पिक एंड चूज’ की नीति पर अंकुश लगेगा। अगर कोई अधिकारी एक माह तक उस आवेदन पर कार्रवाई नहीं करता है तो जांच में लापरवाही मिलने पर आरोपी अधिकारी के खिलाफ कड़ा संज्ञान लिया जाएगा।

         उपमुख्यमंत्री ने नए सिस्टम को विभाग का ट्रांसफोरमेशन बताते हुए कहा कि उन्हें उम्मीद है कि ‘हरियाणा भवन एवं अन्य सन्निर्माण कर्मकार कल्याण बोर्ड’ द्वारा तैयार किए गए साफ्टवेयर का देश में उसी तरह अनुकरण किया जाएगा जिस प्रकार ‘लाल-डोरा मुक्त गांव’ अभियान को अपनाया गया है।

         श्रम एवं रोजगार विभाग के राज्य मंत्री श्री अनूप धानक ने बोर्ड द्वारा तैयार किए गए ऑनलाइन सिस्टम के लिए उपमुख्यमंत्री की सोच को मजदूरों के हित में बताया और कहा कि पंजीकृत श्रमिक एक गरीब तबके से होते हैं, इस सॉफ्टवेयर से उनको योजनाओं का लाभ मिलने में आसानी होगी। कोविड-19 के दौरान श्रम विभाग द्वारा श्रमिकों के लिए किए गए कार्य की सराहना भी की।

         श्रम विभाग के अतिरिक्त मुख्य सचिव श्री वी.एस कुंडु ने विभाग के बारे में विस्तार से जानकारी देते हुए बताया कि ‘सैंट्रल प्रोसेसिंग सिस्टम’ शुरू होने से श्रमिकों के मुद्दों को सुलझाने में काफी मदद मिलेगी। इस अवसर पर श्रम विभाग के आयुक्त श्री पंकज अग्रवाल, बोर्ड के संयुक्त सचिव श्री अनुराग गहलावत, बोर्ड-चेयरमैन के सलाहकार श्री प्रहलाद गोदारा के अलावा विभाग के अन्य अधिकारी भी उपस्थित थे।

First meeting of Interdisciplinary Task Force Held

The first meeting of the newly constituted Interdisciplinary Task Force was held today under the Chairmanship of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. While addressing, PU VC strongly expressed that the thrust areas in the interest of PU be listed out with the interest of society, global perspective and government priority in mind. He informed that he will be integrating all the lab facilities available in PU and urged all to focus on industry oriented research, patents and citations. He further added that the task force  has been constituted  mainly to enhance the global image of PU and to increase outputs for research/teaching for enhancing PU rankings. 

 He urged for enhanced interdepartmental communication to fill the gaps for the research going on in various labs of PU. The need of the hour is to collaborate and work out modalities where Centre for Industry Institute Partnership Programme (CIIPP),Management and Industrial links come to the help of departments.

During discussions, it was also felt that the industry be involved in the Board of Studies and Board of Controls for making of the syllabi and teaching to prioritize the research areas which will enable students to be industry ready.

It was strongly felt that more and more scientists should be encouraged for patenting their research work. For this, PU VC informed that a nodal officer has been appointed for encouraging the writing for getting the patents. For this, hiring a professional patent agent  was also suggested apart from exploring options of  Govt agencies who give free services for filing the patents.

There was a suggestion that under the Corporate Social Responsibility programme, the industry be tapped for funding the research projects. For this, CIIPP and Management can help the departments.

PU VC urged for more and more collaborations with the industry for the visibility of PU. It was  to have interdisciplinary research on environment, health,disaster management, public health and public policy. The industrial feedback will be taken for good research work . There was also a suggestion to have a Science & Technology hub on PU website with thrust areas mentioned therein under which, the links for the faculty to be provided for better coordination.

Webinar on Gender Manthan at Social Work, PU

Centre for Social Work and Department of Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology, Panjab University organized a webinar under the Series titled “Gender Manthan” today.

The idea behind Gender Manthan is  to sensitize students about Gender related issues. The distinguished speaker of the webinar was Professor Chander Shekhar from the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, under the Ministry of Health and Family welfare, Government of India.

Professor Chander Shekhar spoke on “ Declining Fertility Desire and Changing Sex Preference for Children in Punjab: Demographic and Gender Role Implications”.

The welcome address was delivered by Professor Paru Bal Sidhu, Chairperson, Department of Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology, Panjab University.

UIPS organized a popular talk on “COVID-19 Prevention and Control”

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, Chandigarh  organized a popular talk under UIPS Expert Talk Series on “COVID-19 Prevention and Control” .

The event was spearheaded by Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson, UIPS and Professor Poonam Piplani, Convener, Lecture Organising Team of UIPS.

The Chief Guest of the occasion Dr Gurinder Bir Singh, Director Health Services (DHS) Punjab shared his views on the down trending graph of the 2nd wave and the number of lives lost, but he appreciated the strength shown by everyone during these tough times and urged people to keep following COVID protocols to prevent the third and consecutive waves.

Professor Mini P Singh,Department of Virology, PGIMER gave an explicit overview of COVID 19, covering key points like, when and how to mask; proper ways of wearing masks; prone exercise; home care for people with suspected and confirmed infections, busting myths about vaccination. She said that masks with exhalable valves are not good whereas cloth plus surgical masks provide 85% protection. She also covered public dealing during pandemic and protocols to be followed when entering house.

 Professor Mini P Singh is the part of the rapid response team of the UT administration and coronavirus committee of the PGIMER, Chandigarh.

elaborated disease course of COVID 19, high risk factors and pre-emptive strategies to be followed during infection. E-YUVA centre at Panjab University Gets Rs. 2.36 crore

An amount of Rs. 2.36 crore has been sanctioned for three years with Dr. Rohit Sharma, Microbial Biotechnology, Panjab University Chandigarh ,designated as the Project Investigator for Empowering Youth for Undertaking Value Added Innovative Translational Research (E-YUVA) scheme.

This aims to inculcate and promote research and society oriented entrepreneurial innovation among young students and researchers. Under this scheme the E-YUVA Centres (EYCs) provides pre-incubation to innovators along with financial support. The pre-incubation (UIC) has been upgraded to E-YUVA centre.

This centre will provide pre-incubation/incubation, financial and mentoring support to innovators and inculcate entrepreneurial culture. 

Incubation centre EYC has been in alliance with the vision of the  Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar. He has been focusing on the importance of entrepreneurial set up that is going to shape a new India and that we will have to move ahead, taking young and the old together in this initiative. His vison is to integrate and consolidate different verticals of science under an umbrella of research and innovation. He emphasizes on the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship in the ever-dynamic global scenario.

Dr. Rohit Sharma considers this as a key step in empowering and nurturing young entrepreneurs in multidisciplinary areas of work in the northern region of the country. This centre will not only focus on the Entrepreneurs from the University and R &D institutions but also bring on board teams of Innovators from colleges or other graduation institutions. He successfully led the pre-incubation and incubation that was established in the year 2016 with generous funding support received from BIRAC. The pre-incubation has which now has been upgraded to E-YUVA Centre.

Since its inception, the pre-incubation and incubation, has been successful in having more than a score of Innovators on board as resident startups and/or entrepreneurs. It has multiple other success stories with respect to patents, awards and honors, funding, publications, a number of Proof of Concept (POCs), prototypes, products and large number of Innovators transforming to successful start ups, tie ups with industry and multiple follow up funding. Governor inaugurates 1st MRF-cum-Garbage Transfer Station at Chandigarh

Chandigarh, June 11:- Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh today inaugurated the first Material Recovery Facility – cum – Garbage Transfer Station at 3BRD STP site, Industrial Area, Phase II, Chandigarh in the presence of Sh. Manoj Kumar Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh and other senior officers of Administration and MCC.

While addressing the gathering after inauguration of the Station, the Governor said that the centre is first one out of three facilities which are being constructed in the city, the other being under construction at Industrial Area, Phase- I and Sector -25 (West), Chandigarh.

He said that the project is one of the component of the comprehensive Solid Waste Management System as per SWM Rules, 2016, which aims at reducing the time and cost involved in collection and transfer of waste two besides generating income by recovering the reusable and recyclable waste.

The Governor said that Smart City Ltd. has done remarkable job by procuring nearly 425 small vehicles for door to door collection of segregated city waste and the same will be tracked using GPS devices and citizens can know timing of arrival through app being developed under a separate project for tracking of vehicles.

Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma said on the occasion that door to door waste collection vehicles will bring segregated waste i.e. dry & wet waste in different compartments at the Material Recovery Facility which is having dedicated space for sorting of recoverable dry waste into different categories like paper, card, recyclable plastics, glass bottles, metal etc, Dry waste left after recovery of recyclable materials will be compacted in huge compactors to compost plant located in Sector 25, Daddumajra, Chandigarh. Weigh bridges have been provided for measurement of dry and wet waste within the Material Recovery Facility.

He said that MRF facility is equipped with hopper- tippers and compactor capsules for transfer of waste from smaller (3.2 cum) vehicles to 20 cum capsules where the waste will be compacted to one fifth of the original volume. The volume reduction will save cost of transportation of waste and space required for disposal of waste.

Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC-cum-CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. said that waste from Sector 31, 32, 33,34, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, part 63, Industrial Area Ph-I, Ramdarbar, Hallomajra, Makhan Majra, Behlana is proposed to be brought at 3BRD facility. MRF cum GTS at west of sec 25 will cater to Sector 1, 2, 3,4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 25, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, Part 61. Maloya, Dhanas, Sarangpur, Khuda Lahora, Khuda Ali Sher and remaining sectors waste will be brought to Industrial area Phase I, Chandigarh.

He further said that the MRF stations will further be equipped with parking facilities and vehicle washing facilities. These will be monitored through 20 CCTV cameras. Each transfer station will have Material Recovery Facility cum Transfer Stations with 2 Conveyer Belts for each station, Industrial Shed, 3 Weigh Bridge, one Wash System, CCTV, Mechanical equipment for volume reduction of waste to one fifth of original volumes and 9 truck loaded capsules to carry compacted waste to Processing Plant / Composting plant site. The total project is being implement through two contract packages one for civil and one for Mechanical works.

Earlier the Governor and other senior officers planted saplings of various medicinal plants in the compound area of MRF Station.

A Roadmap to the Career Options In Biophysics Discussed at PU

The Placement Cell of the Department of Biophysics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized today a virtual outreach program, ‘A Roadmap to the Career Options In Biophysics’  to spread awareness and generate interest in the field of Biophysics. 

The virtual meet was convened by Dr. Avneet Saini ,Chairperson and Dr. Naveen Kaushal ,Assistant Professor; Placement and Outreach Incharge of the Biophysics Department. Over 110 students from different colleges attended the Outreach Program. 

Prof. Meena Sharma, Honorary Director, Central Placement Cell, PU presided over the virtual meet . In her opening remarks, she appreciated the time and efforts invested by the organizers in making this outreach program a reality. She emphasized the need of organizing such programs to guide students in making informed decisions about their future.

Dr. Avneet Saini introduced the students to biophysics as an interdisciplinary arena that bridges the gap between biological and physical sciences. 

Dr. Naveen Kaushal gave a presentation on the topic ‘Outreach and Placement’ and made the students aware of the scope and various career opportunities that the students can pursue after doing a course in Biophysics. Highly distinguished alumni of the Department gave their testimonials to the students about how Biophysics helped shape their careers. 

Dr. Pooja Khanna shared her journey of becoming a Data Scientist at Green Shield, Canada, and how she chose her passion for the same stemming from Biophysics. Ms. Sonika Sharma, Senior Manager, Medical Writer, Paraxel, Mohali shared her learning and experiences on her path from Biophysics to Parexel. Dr. Preeti Bhardwaj, Scientific Officer B, NCBS, TIFR, Bangalore, and Dr. Rishi Bhardwaj, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Yale University, USA, narrated their stories from being a Ph.D. student at the Department to follow their dreams in their respective careers.

Delegation of grain market association met with Mayor

Chandigarh, June 10:- A delegation of Grain Market Association, Chandigarh met with Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh today to discuss the grievances of traders.

The representatives of Association raised their demand to the Mayor for timely uplifting of collected garbage, regular sweeping of the roads and auction platrorm, removing encroachments of vendors on roads, maintaining sanitation at the Market.

They further demanded that the roads needs to be repaired immediately before the onset of monsoons and re carpeting of roads to be undertaken at the earliest. They also requested to get the faulty street lights repaired to avoid untoward incidents.
