Governor launches phase-I of Public Bicycle Sharing Project in Chandigarh

Also launches SCADA system for TT Water, GPS on door to door waste collection vehicles & OBPAS for commercial units

Chandigarh, August 12:- Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh today inaugurated four projects under the Smart Cities Mission in Chandigarh including SCADA System for Tertiary Treated Water Distribution System, SCADA for monitoring of Door to Door Waste Collection Vehicles and Online Building Plan Approval System (OBPAS) for Commercial Units was held at the Rose Club Sector-16, along with Phase-1 of the Public Bicycle Sharing project which was launched at the Shanti Kunj Parking area, Sector-16.

The occasion was graced by Sh. Dharam Pal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor of the city, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC-cum-CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd., Sh. Mandeep Singh Brar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Siddhu, Senior Deputy Mayor, other councilors and officers of MCC and other dignitaries.

On the occasion, the Governor said that the SCADA system for monitoring of Door to Door Waste Collection Vehicles is an integral part of the Pan-City – Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based solutions under the Smart Cities Mission. The project aims to improve the efficiency of collection, transportation and disposal of municipal solid waste from Chandigarh in a cost effective and environmentally friendly manner. It will help to monitor, track and manage various SWM tasks related to Door to Door collection through GPS enabled devices mounted on 642 vehicles. The movement of the vehicles will be monitored by the team at the Command & Control center to ensure assigned routes are followed.

He said that Citizens can register on Clean Chandigarh App to get a notification on their mobile when the vehicle is about to reach their vicinity. They can also see the route of the waste collection vehicle assigned to their area. In the event of vehicle breakdown, the Command center will get an alert and replacement vehicle will be assigned to complete the work.

He expressed happiness over the decision of Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. for allocating a dedicated team at the Help Desk (0172-2787200) which will resolve the grievance related to door to door waste collection. He said that citizens will also be able to log their complaints through the Mobile application. The system will enable officials to check the amount of total dry and wet waste generated in the city.

Speaking on the project of Public Bike Sharing System, the Governor said that Chandigarh is the only city to launch the project on pan-city basis and was proud to announce the deployment of pedal assisted hybrid e-bicycles also. The project will ultimately be extended to 5000 bicycles & 617 stations in a year’s time, making it India’s densest and largest PBS system. The residents can now undertake their daily chores on bicycles and leave their worry of parking their vehicles aside. The advantage of this system is its nominal user charges and ease of locating nearest docking station through the SmartBike mobile app.

Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh said that city with the launch of Public Bicycle Sharing project with 1250 bicycles and 155 docking stations has entered into elite category of Indian cities to have their own Public Bicycle Sharing system. The much awaited project started off last year has borne the fruit.

He said that the facilities include Bicycle, Network of Docking Station; GPS based tracking of bicycles, Central Control System with Call Centre, Workshop, User Registration &Fare Collection System through Mobile app, Advertisement space. The project will be maintained by the concessionaire for 10 years and provide array of services. Notably, Chandigarh is the only North Indian city in the Top-11 cities to be rewarded under India Cycles4Change Challenge with a sum of Rs. 1 Cr and technical assistance from national & international experts to scale-up cycling infrastructure.

While speaking on the online projects, the Mayor said that SCADA for Tertiary Treated Water Recycled Water Distribution system is to monitor daily supply and requisite parameter for better management of O&M of Tertiary Treated Water distribution system. Started last year, the project saw establishment of SCADA Centre, installation of flow meters, level transmitter, pressure transmitter, Remote Terminal Unit (RTU’s), Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).

He said that for this project, a mobile app has also been developed to fetch real time data by the city officials. With this, monitoring and data collection related to Tertiary Treated Water will help in analysis of flow of TT water along with quantity and quality parameters which will help in future use of TT water for various usages.

Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC-cum-CEO, CSCL informed about the another important citizen service launched is the Online Building Plan Approval System (OBPAS) for Commercial units through which the citizens will be able to apply for the approval of commercial building plans.

He said that through OBPAS, building plans can be submitted online i.e. faceless interface for granting approvals. SMS & Email Notifications will be sent to citizens related to their application status and further to pay the fee online. The project will ensure timely approval of the building plans and maintain transparency with well-defined roles for each department/employees. Citizens / Architects can also avail support of 24 X 7 Help Desk (0172-2787200) for any enquiries.

He said that the registration form for the architects is available on MCC and CSCL web portal (http://mcchandigarh.gov.in & https://www.chandigarhsmartcity.in).  Registration form will be approved by the Department of Urban Planning (Architecture Wing) and Username and password will be shared with the Architects through Email. The centralised dashboard will help track applications status and also grievances of Citizens / Architects.

Physical Efficiency Test for Bachelor and Master Courses

Workshop on “Mental Health and Well being”

The Centre for Human Rights and Duties in collaboration with National Cadet Corps of Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a one day workshop for NCC Cadets on the topic of  “Mental Health and Well Being” at University Institute of Emerging Areas  in Social Sciences, (UIEASS)Panjab University, Chandigarh on 11 August, 2021.

Dr. Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties introduced the resource person. She stated that everyone has faced one or other kind of mental health problems in the Corona pandemic. People have faced difficulties in coping with mental health problems. Therefore it is the need of the hour to inform people what they should do in such situations and how they can maintain their well being.

Dr. Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University in her presentation explained that mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. To become healthy, every person needs to think clearly and originally, feel active and behave properly in society. She also defined the concept of success. Success is basically having self-satisfaction and to achieve one’s Goals. She stated that parameters of success differ with individuals and it changes with times as persons keep evolving. Everyone needs to think before sleeping whether what they are doing is good for them or not.

She further added that human Beings should live a slow, simple and uncomplicated life. Nowadays, people don’t think actively. They only do what society teaches them. Hence, there is a need to think actively, originally and positively and to understand what is right or wrong. She also said that our body and mind is our life partner so we have to take care of our body and health, and should exercise daily. We should not adopt bad habits, and don’t abuse our body through consuming substance abuse. We should be aware of our abilities, weaknesses and emotions. We should have a balanced life so that we cannot regret our decisions later. Everyone should work on their skills, attitude and competency besides having a professionalized degree. Everyone needs to learn how to speak up or express their thoughts, ideas and emotions on public platforms.

Zoology, PU Organises Distinguished Lectures

The Department of Zoology, Panjab University Chandigarh hosted today, virtual distinguished lectures under the aegis of Indian Sciences Congress Association and Zoological Society of India in collaboration with Chandigarh forum for Sciences and Technology Communication.

The session was chaired by Prof. R. C. Sobti former Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University Chandigarh, and Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar Central University, Lucknow. Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Chairperson of, Department of Zoology welcomed the distinguished guests and eminent speakers.

The first distinguished lecture entitled “Small stories big impact DNA in life science research” was delivered by Prof. Gulab Khedkar Director, Paul Hebert Centre for DNA Barcoding and Biodiversity Studies, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad India. He discussed DNA barcoding and International Barcode of Life (iBOL) initiatives. He elaborated upon the applications of DNA barcoding in taxonomic studies on fishes, food forensic and wildlife monitoring, exploration and impact of exotic species. Further, he also highlighted the importance of beta-actin markers in microsatellite genotyping and metagenomic profile of uterine samples to improve the in-vitro fertilization success ratio.

The second lecture entitled “Protein-based Biomarkers methods of discovery and clinical application” was delivered by Dr. Sudarshan Kumar, Sr. ScientistAnimal Biotechnology Center, ICAR-NDRI Karnal. He discussed bovine proteomics using mass spectrometry. He emphasized the working and methodologies of various techniques in isolating protein and the importance of proteomic research. He provided an insight into the various high throughput data analyses pipelines and various protein sequences databases. He also discussed the apoptosis pathways in different organs and different biomarkers for pregnancy discoveries using protein content in cow urine.

The session ended with vote of thanks form Dr. Archana Chauhan, coordinator of the event.

The session was attended by more than 100 participants.

Poster Making and Slogan Writing Competition on the Theme “Say No to Drugs”

Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh and University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development organized an online poster making and slogan writing competition on the theme “Say No to Drugs” on July 30, 2021. The students from various colleges of Panjab as well as students of Panjab University participated in the event enthusiastically. The students were instructed that the poster/slogan must be handmade along with stepwise pictures to ensure originality of the work.

The result of the competition was announced on August 10, 2021. The first prize in the poster making was bagged by Ms Gaurika, Department of Education, Panjab University. Second prize was won by Ms Tanya from MCM DAV College and third prize was shared by Ms Yukta from UIFT&VD and Ms Chetanpreet Kaur. In slogan writing competition, the first prize was won by Ms Ramanjot Kaur, second prize by Ms Tara Sehgal and third prize was shared by Ms Kriti Bhardwaj, IETVE and Ms Manshita Goyal.

Celebrations of Amrut Mahotsav at PU

The office of Dean international Students, Department of Sociology, Department of Social Work and Department of History celebrated Amrut Mahotsav 75 years of India’s Independence by special lecture of Professor Rajendra Khimani , Vice Chancellor, Gujarat Vidyapith University, Ahmedabad, who spoke about the lifestyle during Pandemic.

Prof.  Khimani follows the path of Gandhiji and highlighted to the participants that they should eat homemade food with less quantity, do regular physical activity and follow naturopathy in order to fight the woes of the pandemic. He focused on simplicity and use of natural resources to combat pandemics. He also elaborated on policy of reduce ,reuse and recycle for the benefit of all . He also mentioned about the focus on Indian culture and its various languages to make education more viable and vibrant with maximum participation by all including those belonging to rural areas. These are also part of the NEP 2020 which gives encouragement to teaching in local languages, dignity of labour etc. for which he has himself made efforts in his university.

Prof. Anju Suri, Dean International Students, highlighted various achievements of India over the years be it Olympics, mission to Mars, nuclear power plants etc.
