The Institutions Innovation Council (IIC) of Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, in association with various university departments, including SAIF/CIL, Environmental Studies, Geology, and the Central Placement Cell, celebrated National Entrepreneurship Day, today.

Director (Technology) of the Indian Semiconductor Mission, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, Dr. Manish Kumar Hooda was the Chief Guest.

The event was held to inspire students, researchers and faculty members to embrace entrepreneurship as a pathway to innovation and success. The event featured a series of motivational talks by successful entrepreneurs and experts from various sectors.

In his address, Dr. Manish Kumar Hooda spoke about the critical role of innovative ideas in shaping his entrepreneurial journey. He emphasised that the most important is ideation as the success of any start-up venture is based on the originality of the idea of a budding entrepreneur. He stressed the need for creativity and strategic thinking to turn ideas into reality. He spoke about his latest project of Semicon India and his conviction to produce semiconductor chips in India.

PU Registrar Prof. Y. P. Verma, in his inaugural address, highlighted the importance of the “Three P’s” – Passion, Perseverance and Patience, as the key qualities for the success of any entrepreneurial venture. He encouraged the audience to adopt these principles for long-term success.

Global Senior Director at Jaguar Land Rover, North America, Dr. Amandeep S. Bhullar shared 10 essential points that aspiring entrepreneurs should keep in mind when starting a business or a startup.

Founder of Vardhman Chemtech and Chief Strategist at Kinvan Pvt. Ltd. Mr. Suyog Jain shared his entrepreneurial journey, detailing the challenges he faced and how he overcame them to successfully execute high-profile projects, including one recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr. Gautam Madhok, Managing Director of Higgs Healthcare Ltd., narrated his experience of manufacturing the Form Fill Seal (FFS) machine in India. He shared how he was able to reduce the cost of manufacturing to one-tenth of that of the German suppliers and, eventually, became the largest exporter of FFS machines in India.

Mr. Deepak Bagai, owner of the Asiatic Centre of Gemological Services, spoke about the fascinating world of gemstones and the opportunities in the field of gemology, urging students to explore careers in this unique industry. 

Prof. Narinder Singh, of the Department of Chemistry, IIT, Ropar spoke on the crucial skills required for successful lab-to-industry research transitions, urging students and researchers to develop skills that make them industry-ready.

Earlier, the proceedings began with welcome remarks and an introduction to the theme of the event by Prof Ganga Ram Chaudhary, President of the IIC. He emphasised the importance of entrepreneurship in today’s rapidly evolving world.

The event was attended by over 100 participants, including students, faculty and professionals from industries, all of whom found the lectures motivating and inspiring.

The speakers’ experiences and insights provided valuable knowledge on the path to becoming a successful entrepreneur, offering guidance on overcoming obstacles, fostering innovation, and scaling businesses.

The National Entrepreneurship Day celebration successfully provided a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs to connect with industry leaders, gain valuable insights, and be motivated to embark on their own entrepreneurial journeys. IIC, through this meaningful celebration of the “National Entrepreneurship day’ under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Ganga Ram Choudhary jointly convened by Prof. Gurmeet Kaur (Covenor IIC), Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Chairperson (Environment Studies), Dr Mahesh Thakur (Geology), Dr Bunty Sharma (SAIF/CII). In addition to students, the event witnessed the vibrant presence of many faculty members, researchers and staff members.

Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University commemorated National Legal Services Day by organizing an Interactive Cum Awareness Session on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights: Breaking Myths and Stereotypes on 8 November 2024.

Sh. Sunil Kumar Panghal, Red Ribbon Coordinator at Chandigarh, State AIDS Control Society along with Mrs. Teenu Chopra, Deputy Director at the Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society and Health Department of U.T. Chandigarh gave a detailed informative presentation to the students busting myths and dogmas that led to stigma and taboos around the disease affected victims which further led to a deeper societal boycott. He explained the difference between HIV and AIDS and busted beliefs where both conceptual terms were confused and not understood by the common man which led to an unreasonable paranoia. AIDS in this context assumed more of a behavioural problem which had only a single solution which was to talk about the ways of how the virus spread and led to the manifestation of disease. In India, the first case was detected in 1986 at Vellore in Tamil Nadu and the highest statistics of HIV stood in Northeast, where consequently the most effective awareness campaign was initiated, namely the needle exchange program to combating spread of HIV. Further, the helpline number of 1097 was endorsed which is 24/7 accessible to the public.Vibrant discussions between the research, scholars and the resource person took place. In the beginning of the programme Dr. Upneet Kaur Mangat, Co-ordinator of the Centre’s Legal Aid Clinic introduced the pertinent theme of the session of sensitization of the youth towards a more ‘responsible living’.

Prof. Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh precisely concluded the academic-session insights while also affirming organizing such sensitization workshops with the students in the future too.

Panjab University, Chandigarh Makes Significant Improvement in QS University Asia 2025 Rankings

Panjab University has made significant progress by achieving rank 269 in the QS Asia Rankings this year. The university has surpassed 72.7% Asian institutions in terms of rank. Last year, PU was ranked in the 301-350 bracket. This rank of Panjab University is its highest since QS Asia Ranking 2018 edition.

Furthermore, in the QS Southern Asia Rankings 2025, Panjab University has advanced from 73rd rank to 59th position this year, marking a notable achievement.

The overall ranking has published data from 984 institutions spread across all over Asia. 

Universities have been ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted 11 indicators grouped under parameters: Research & Discovery, Learning Experience, Employability, Global Engagement, Sustainability.

Panjab University has made noteworthy improvements in most of the indicators. 

Responding to the significant improvement in PU’s QS University Asia 2025 Rankings, the PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig has congratulated the faculty and the staff of the university for the achievement. She has attributed the consistent improvements in rankings to the focussed approach of identifying areas needing attention, especially global engagements, perception as well as improving quality of research output.

*Chandigarh Fire Dept records 20 emergency calls on Diwali; lowest in last three years*

*Chandigarh, November 1:-* The Fire & Rescue Services Department, MC, Chandigarh has received 20 emergency calls on Diwali night, marking the lowest number of incidents in the last 3 years. 4 minor injuries were reported .

 As of November 1, a total of 20 distress calls related to fire accidents and emergencies were reported from across the city, a significant decrease from previous years as last year reported 22 emergency calls on Diwali.

Speaking about the decrease in fire related incidents, MC Commissioner, Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, said that there was no major fire incident reported as the MC had meticulously devised a comprehensive plan to ensure the safety and security of the city. 

He further said that the entire city was strategically divided into 07 Fire Zones, each under the jurisdiction of the respective Station Fire Officer. This mobilization plan ensured efficient coverage and quick response times across all areas.

The Commissioner said that specialized fire vehicles were strategically deployed for standby duties at venues experiencing heavy footfall and in vulnerable areas. These locations were including Patel Market Sec-15, Plaza Sector-17, Sadar/Palika Bazar Sector-19, Aroma Light Point (also covering Shashtri Market Sector-22), Grain Market Sector-26, Main Bazar Manimajra, and Solid Waste Processing Plant, Sec. 25, Chandigarh.

The Fire vehicles were also stationed at 12 cracker sites as earmarked by the District Magistrate, UT Chandigarh to ensure the safety of festivities at these locations. To maximize deployment, the leave/rest of operational staff was restricted from 30th October to 1st November 2024, ensuring a robust workforce during the crucial period.

He urged citizens to cooperate with the department and follow safety guidelines for a secure and enjoyable festive season ahead also.

*Chandigarh, October 30:-* Extending Diwali gift to 42 Safai karmacharis, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh promoted them as Sanitary Jamadar in the existing pay level-1 as per 7th CPC as per notification dated 29.03.2023.

Issuing the promotional orders, Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, MC, Chandigarh said that the promotions were due and as per the recommendation of the departmental promotion committee, these 42 Safaikarmcharis have been promoted. He extended Diwali wishes to all the Safaikarmcharis, the city’s unsung heroes-the ones who tirelessly keep the streets clean and hygienic.

The Commissioner also distributed Jaggery, Oil and Soap to the Safaikarmacharis. He also extended Diwali wishes to all the citizens of city beautiful with an appeal to celebrate this year Green Diwali to keep the environment clean and avoid fire crackers as much as possible.

The promotees were among Smt. Laxmi, Biram Pal, Bishan, Babu, Roshan Lal, Prithvi, Prem Singh, Jagbir, Joginder, Rajkumar , Ranbir, Partap, Kabul, Ramesh, Jai Bhawan, Rishi Pal, Rajbir, Meher Chand, Ramesh, Pappu, Rakesh, Jangi, Pardeep, Neena, Raghbir, Mangat, Raj pal, Karam Singh, Yudhbir, Chander pal, Lal chand, Ram Parkash, Raj Kumar, Ram Kumar, Madan kumar, Sunil, Narinder, Rajbir, Dhanpat, Kuldeep, Leela and Siri Pal.

*F&CC approves construction of jogging track in park at sector 24*

*Chandigarh, October 28:-* The Finance and Contract committee of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has accorded approval for various developmental agenda items including construction of jogging track in a park at sector 24, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 10.31 lacs.

The meeting of F&CC was held here today under the Chairmanship of Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, Mayor and attended by Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner and other members of committee namely Smt. Jaswinder Kaur, Sh. Maheshinder Singh Siddhu,  Sh. Lakhbir Singh, Smt. Taruna Mehta and other senior officers of MCC.

The members of committee discussed other various important agenda items in detail and accorded approval for the following:

·        Construction of RCC toe wall along the windrow pad area at 300 TPD composting plant Dadumajra, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 15.40 lacs.

·        Arrangement of programme for Chhat Puja at Indra Colony, Manimajra at an estimated cost of Rs. 7 lacs.

·        Proposal for the landscaping and construction of toe wall under MS flat railing for enclosing area after demolishing abandoned Sulabh Sauchalyas at sector 25, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 17.33 lacs.

·        Construction of three public toilet blocks in three different green belts located at Palm park, four story houses village Dadumajra at an estimated cost of Rs. 49.77 lacs.

·        The committee members also enhanced the fee of advocates empanelled by the MC Chandigarh in District Courts, Labour Court, Permanent Lok Adalat, Consumer Forum and other lower courts from Rs. 7000 to Rs. 10,000 per case including clerkage plus expenses.

*Celebrates “Swachh DEEPOTSAV” at Sector-17, Promoting Sustainability and Cleanliness*

*Chandigarh, October 28:-* With the aim of invoking the cultural significance of Diwali in alignment with the Swachh Bharat Mission and the convergence of DAY-NULM, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh celebrated “Swachh DEEPOTSAV” today at Sector-17 Plaza. This event marked the city launch of the “Swachh Diwali – Shubh Diwali” campaign (October 28 to November 3, 2024), emphasizing the principles of ‘Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskaar Swachhata’ following the national launch by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, along with councilors, MCC officials, Safaimitras, SBM Brand Ambassador Sh. Praveen Duggal, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and citizens, initiated the campaign by lighting 600 Govardhan diyas, spreading the message of celebrating a green and sustainable Diwali.

Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) created vibrant rangolis with symbolic representations of the Swachh Bharat Mission. The “Swachh Diwali – Shubh Diwali” theme conveyed messages of cleanliness, community engagement, and empowerment while promoting the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR).

The Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar stated, “This Diwali, let us not only celebrate the festival of lights but also commit ourselves to the principles of cleanliness and sustainability. Together, we can ensure a cleaner and greener Chandigarh for future generations.”

MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar emphasized that a massive citywide cleanliness drive, led by Safaimitras and citizens, is already underway to celebrate the festival, spreading the message of cleanliness and leading by example.

Additionally, stalls have been set up by SHGs at the carnival and exhibitions to promote community empowerment and encourage the adoption of eco-friendly products. RRR collection points have also been established in all 35 wards at community centres, encouraging citizens to donate items such as clothes, toys, books, and electronics. The Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with RWAs and MWAs, will ensure that all donated items reach the permanent RRR centre in Sector 17. In the coming weeks, a ‘Rupee Store’ will be organized, aligning stock after necessary refurbishments.

Citizens are urged to celebrate Swachh DEEPOTSAV this Diwali by keeping the city clean and moving toward a zero-waste lifestyle, promoting a clean and green mission for all.

*MCC Intensifies Vigilance on Vendors Operating Beyond Permissible Hours*

*Chandigarh, October 27:-* To maintain order and ensure compliance with city regulations, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) has intensified its vigilance and enforcement efforts to curb unauthorized vending activities. This initiative aims to provide citizens and visitors with a safe, organized environment.

Vendors are permitted to operate from 6 AM to 10 PM. However, during recent enforcement drives, the team observed that some vendors were operating beyond these hours. In response, a joint operation by the MCC enforcement team and Chandigarh Police was conducted today in Sector 22, successfully removing vendors operating outside the authorized hours.

Municipal Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, emphasized that these joint drives will continue across the city to ensure compliance with guidelines and prevent encroachments. “We are committed to maintaining public safety and convenience, and we urge all vendors to comply with legal regulations,” he stated.

The Municipal Corporation warns that strict action will be taken against violators to uphold the integrity of public spaces.

In addition to removing vendors, the enforcement team also seized materials left at vending sites after hours. Temporary coverings, such as tarpaulins, have been removed to further ensure compliance.

*Mayor inaugurates Sensory Park in Sector 22*

*Chandigarh, October 26:-* Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, Mayor, Chandigarh today inaugurated Sensory Prak in sector 22, here in presence of Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, MC Commissioner, Sh. Damanpreet Singh, area councillor and other councillors & prominent persons of city.

While addressing the audience, the Mayor said that the idea of sensory park focuses on engaging and enhancing multiple senses and abilities of individual like sight, taste, smell, touch, hearing, mobility and motor skills and intellectual skill etc.

He said that the park also offers variety of ways of meeting, play and leisure needs of children with and without disabilities. The project titled “Sensory Park” has been developed in the park near House No.3901 to 3905, Sector 22-D, Chandigarh opposite Gurudwara Sahib having area 0.65 acre at a cost of approximately Rs.124.54 Lacs.

The Mayor further said that the play area have rubber flooring which enhances the safety of children. For visually impaired individual, tactile cement concrete tactile pavers are used which serves as directional indictors. Play equipments such as shoulder builder, spring rider, see saw, merry-go-around, swing, leg roller and wheel chair accessible basketball court, all help children work on their big and small muscles, orienting their body in shape and sense of body balance. Various musical equipments such as congo track, drum track, musical panel and polls are also installed, said the Mayor.

He said that interactive railings with steps at various level have been installed in the park. A hedge maze having labyrinth of pathways with flooring as a reflexology path has also forms the centre of attraction. Various kinds of herbs, shrubs and trees are planted.

He said that children are encouraged to touch, smell, taste and generally attract with the environment around them. Different feature walls also exist along the pathway which helps activate children’s observing and learning ability. Wall having surfaces with illusion art, blackboard where they can scribble with chalk and walls having cut-outs of different shapes entice them to explore different aspects.

The Mayor said that Sensory Park is a wonderful way for children to explore their senses and learn about the environment around them.
