*Chandigarh, October 2:-* In a heartfelt tribute to the unwavering dedication of Safaimitras and other key stakeholders of city working towards a cleaner Chandigarh, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh celebrated ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ with great fervor at Rani Laxmi Bai Mahila Bhawan, Sector 38. The event, titled Swachh Samman Samaroh, was organized to express gratitude to those who have worked tirelessly to uphold cleanliness and hygiene across the city.

Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He honoured the Safaimitras and various stakeholders including representatives from Resident Welfare Associations, Market Welfare Associations, Schools, Colleges, NGOs, and institutions, in the presence of Mayor Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla, Sh. Mandeep Singh Brar IAS, Chief Secretary, Sh. Amit Kumar IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Pardeep Kumar, Special Commissioner and other senior dignitaries, councillors, and officers of MCC.

In a significant announcement during the event, the Governor asked to launch a city-wide Swachhata Competition across all 35 municipal wards. He declared that the top three cleanest wards will be rewarded with special development grants of ₹50 lakh, ₹30 lakh, and ₹20 lakh, respectively. The initiative aims to foster a spirit of healthy competition and ensure sustained cleanliness at the grassroots level. The Governor emphasized that this effort would not only promote accountability among local communities but also pave the way for a permanently clean and garbage-free Chandigarh.

Lauding the honesty, perseverance, and tireless work of the Safaimitras, the Governor remarked that their efforts form the backbone of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Chandigarh. The event, themed Swachh Samman Samaroh, highlighted the vital role these individuals play in maintaining cleanliness and promoting a culture of sustainability. He noted that their contributions serve as an inspiration to all citizens and reiterated the need for collective efforts to achieve a healthier and more sustainable urban future.

City Mayor Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla extended her heartfelt appreciation to all Safaimitras and stakeholders, commending their continuous commitment to the Swachhata mission. “The dedication and hard work of Safaimitras and all stakeholders is truly commendable. They have been instrumental in keeping our city clean and ensuring a healthier environment for all. Today, we honour their invaluable service,” she said.

Extending thanks to all the guests, Municipal Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar stated that the Swachh Samman Samaroh is a reflection of the city’s deep appreciation for the champions of cleanliness. He elaborated on the activities carried out under the ‘Swachhotsav’ during the Swachhata Hi Seva Pakhwada, including the formation of a human chain for Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (RRR), mass Swachhata pledges, park cleanliness drives, exhibitions by SHGs, home composting campaigns, vendor sensitization camps, mega cleanliness drives, health screening camps for Safaimitras, cultural events, cyclothons, and plastic waste collection drives.

Earlier, the Chief guest and other dignitaries paid heartfelt homage to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri by offering floral tributes, fondly remembering their timeless contributions for country and people on their birth anniversaries.

The event concluded with resounding appreciation from all corners for the Safaimitras and MCC’s continued efforts towards a cleaner, greener, and healthier Chandigarh.
