*Chandigarh, May 21:-* Aiming to make a lasting impact on Chandigarh’s cleanliness journey, the MC Chandigarh conducted a capacity-building and training workshop for Sanitary Inspectors and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to raise awareness and improve sanitary waste management as an ongoing exercise under the ‘Swachhata Ki Mohar’ initiative led by an expert team over a two-week-long period.

The exercise coincides with International Menstrual Hygiene Day and aims to educate and empower both municipal staff and citizens on effective sanitary waste management.

The training session for the Sanitary Inspectors and SHGs underscored the importance of segregating sanitary waste from other waste streams, with the goal of leaving an indelible mark on the path towards a cleaner and greener India.

Over the course of this week, the exercise will cover SHG teams, field staff, and door-to-door waste collectors. They will be trained on the significance of proper sanitary waste management. Additionally, the team/staff will visit households across the city to educate citizens about the types of waste considered “sanitary” and provide information on proper sanitary waste management.

Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, said that this two-week ‘Swachhata Ki Mohar’ initiative aims to build on the progress made in waste segregation and management by focusing on raising awareness and encouraging citizens to effectively segregate their sanitary waste.

She further added that as the Municipal Corporation moves towards 100% collection of segregated waste, this exercise will help the Corporation further improve the management of sanitary waste in the city.

She also stated that the Municipal Corporation’s efforts have already yielded tangible results. Initially, the daily collection of sanitary waste was only 12-15 kilograms. However, over the last two years, the daily collection has increased to 650-700 kilograms. As per the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, sanitary waste must be processed through incineration, and the Municipal Corporation has been doing so through the authorized biomedical waste processing agency, Alliance Care.

The Municipal Commissioner appealed to all citizens to segregate their sanitary waste and hand it over to the Municipal Garbage Collector.

The Municipal Corporation ensures cleanliness and personal and public hygiene in the public conveniences. The city’s public conveniences have sanitary facilities and hygiene amenities available. Sanitary vending machines are provided for users’ convenience, and red bins are placed in the public conveniences for the proper disposal of sanitary waste, supporting effective sanitary waste management.
