Governor laid foundation stone for augmentation of Water Storage capacity at water works sector 39
Chandigarh, December 4:- Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh today laid the foundation stone for augmentation of water storage capacity at Water Works, Sector 39, Chandigarh virtually from Punjab Raj Bhawan in presence of Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator while Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Jagtar Singh, Deputy Mayor, Smt. Gurbax Rawat, area councilor and other councilors and officers were present at the venue, water works, sector 39, Chandigarh.
While addressing the gathering, the Governor said that the Municipal Corporation has supported the improvement of water supply in the city not only putting in place the basic infrastructure necessary for water supply, also it supports capacity building through technical assistance.
He said that the project of enhancing storage capacity of clear water tanks from 15 MG to 17 MG alongwith provision of pumping machinery, recycling pump house and laying of required lines, the Corporation enables the citizens of Chandigarh to get access to safe and clean water 3 times a day.
The Governor said that in order to make full advantage of these new facilities and to utilize them for a long time period, both the authorities and people of Chandigarh will have to put jointly more efforts for the good maintenance of the facilities. He appealed the citizens of Chandigarh to develop a habit of saving water and do not waste it any cost.
While appreciating the devoted work to initiate this project, Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator said that the Municipal Corporation is improving the ease of living in the city which includes better water supply, road connectivity, street lights, parks and sanitation facilities. He said that the facilities constructed under the project will be made best use of and improve and enrich the lives of people of Chandigarh.
Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor thanked the Governor and Adviser for extending their regular support to the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. She said that, when needed, the Governor allotted sufficient budget for the projects of MCC. She also thanked the Member Parliament, Smt. Kirron Kher for her contribution for water supply augmentation and upgradation of water storage capacity in the water works, sector 39.
While briefing about the project, the Commissioner said that at present the available raw water storage capacity at Water Works, Sector 39 is 48 MGD and clear water capacity is 15 MG. This available storage capacity is sufficient to cater only half day city’s water requirement and in case of any breakdown/damage to any of the 4 rising mains (pipes) from Kajauli or any electricity shutdown at Kajauli, it takes approximately one day to get the repairs done resulting in water crises in the city. But with the proposal to create additional raw water storage capacity by remodeling/redesigning of the existing storage tanks and the capacity of seven tanks will be increased, he added.
He said that the height of the tanks will also be increased so as to enhance the existing capacity of raw water tanks from 48 MG to 92 MG. He said that the total cost of the project will be Rs. 39 Crores for which the Chandigarh Administration has provided Rs. 28 Crores and Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. has provided Rs. 11 Crore and the work has been completed in a period of 2 years.
He said that after the completion of this project, the total water storage capacity at Water Works, sector 39 will be 109 MG, which is sufficient to meet the city’s peak daily requirement. He said that the CREST has also made a proposal to install floating solar panels on the raw water tanks which will have a proposed capacity of 12 Mega Watts.
