*Director NEERI interacts with councillors. Briefs about the Integrated Solid waste management plant to be set up in Chandigarh*
Chandigarh, June 26:- Dr. Atul Narayan Vaidya, Director, NEERI, Nagpur briefed the councillors of all parties about the technology of ISWM Plant to be established at Dadumajra.
The Director, NEERI briefed the councillors that Bio CNG is the technology best suited for Chandigarh City as per its climate and characteristics of municipal solid waste.
Dr. Atul further stated the Plant will be set up after getting environmental clearance which is a very rigorous process. Environment Clearance addresses issues of water pollution, odour and soil pollution. He responded to queries regarding establishment of other technologies and why they were not suitable for Chandigarh. He added that moisture content which is on higher side, the quantum of wet waste, projections of waste in future, have to be kept in mind. He also explained that some technologies are investment intensive and also high maintenance.
He further informed that the CNG produced in Plant may be used to produce electricity, hydrogen or ethanol in future. However, some of these technologies are yet to stabilise. He said that there will be no issue of odour as bio filters are provided to check the same. He assured the Councillors that after installation of the Plant , NEERI would also be supervising the performance of working of the Plant .
Dr. Atul further said that Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh has done significant progress in segregation of waste from source level which will be beneficial for the processing of solid waste at different levels.
