Chandigarh ranks Best in UTs for AMRUT implementation
Chandigarh, June 25:- The Union Territory of Chandigarh ranked best in UTs and 2nd in all State and UTs after Orisa ranked 1st for effective implementation of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) in the country.
In the National rankings released by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Chandigarh is placed second during an online event organized today to commemorate 6 years of the three transformative urban missions vis. Smart Cities Mission (SCM), AMRUT and PMAY-U, which were launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, on 25th June, 2015.
The event was presided by Shri Hardeep S. Puri, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Housing and Urban Affairs and was attended by key urban stakeholders from Central and State Governments including Principal Secretaries of States/UTs, Municipal Commissioners of Cities, and MDs/CEOs of Smart Cities.
Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner and Sh. Shailender Singh, Chief Engineer, MCC attended the online event and received the awards.
While sharing this achievement, the Commissioner said that Atal Mission for Rejuvenation & Urban Transformation (AMRUT) is the first focused national water Mission and was launched on 25th June, 2015 in 500 cities covering 60% of the urban population. All cities having population above 1 lakh are covered under Mission. Providing piped water supply and sewerage & septage management in Mission cities is the major focus of the Mission. Storm water drainage, non-motorized urban transport and green spaces & parks are minor components of Mission.
He said that in Chandigarh, 12 projects costing Rs. 54.09 crores were approved. 100% funding for these projects was provided by MOHUA, GOI. The works such as Laying of new water supply lines in uncovered areas of Deep Complex, Hallomajra, Replacement of PVC water supply lines with DI water supply pipes in Madrasi & Rehabilitation Colony Maloya, Providing water supply lines in Rehabilitation Colony, Dadumajra, Shifting of water supply lines in Indira Colony, Manimajra, Laying of additional sewerage system in Ram Darbar Colony, Development of Green Belt in Sector 48 C&D, Providing rising main from Jandpur to Sector 39, Establishment of water supply testing laboratory. Through these projects, we are able to provide clean and safe drinking water, good sewerage network system to avoid contamination especially in Rehabilitation Colonies and increase number of children friendly green parks in the city.
The Commissioner further said that with all efforts, MC Chandigarh has completed 10 out of 12 works and balance 2 works are likely to be completed by 31.09.2021. About 20000 new sewer and water supply connections have been released so far under AMRUT projects. MC Chandigarh has achieved all the reforms required to be carried out under AMRUT every year since 2015 and has also been given cash incentive of Rs. 195.00 lacs for achieving the milestones with respect to reforms.
