Botany Department, Panjab University successfully organized 5th & 6th Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap Oration Award Lectures at 11.00 a.m. on April 24, 2019 at Auditorium of Botany Department. Chairperson of the Botany Department, Prof. (Dr.) Daizy R. Batish gave the welcome address.

Prof (Dr.) Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions, Panjab University, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest on the occasion. In his inaugural address, he enlightened the audience about Shiv Ram Kashyap Oration Award Lectures and also congratulated and appreciated the efforts of Botany department for organizing the event. He also said about Prof. Kashyap was conferred Doctorate Degree (honoris causa) during special convocation (December 4-6, 1933) in the golden jubilee celebrations of the University 
along with Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose. He was given the title of ‘Rai Sahib’ in 1920 and ‘Rai Bahadur’ in 1929 in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to academic services. Subsequently, the dignitaries were honoured and felicitations were offered.Prof. Promila Pathak, introduced both the awardees Prof. (Dr.) Imran Siddiqi, JC Bose Fellow, CCMB, Hyderabad &  Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir K. Sopory, SERB Distinguished Fellow, 
ICGEB, Delhi). She introduced the first awardee and mentioned his achievements stating that Prof. (Dr.) Imran Siddiqi, presently working as JC Bose Fellow (DST), CCMB, Hyderbad. He did his Master of Science from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and Ph.D. from University of Oregon, USA in 1989. He did his Ph.D. under the guidance of Prof. Franklin Stahl and the topic of his research was “Genetic Recombination in Bacteriophage”. After that, he did his Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Prof. Imran Siddiqi is a well-known geneticist. His research has shown a lot of promise and progress in the areas of apomixes, meiosis and gametogenesis in plants. Since 1992, he is a Scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad. He has established his own Siddiqi Lab at CCMB, Hyderabad. He has been a Visiting Professor in the Laboratory of Prof. V. Sunderasan, Institute of Molecular Agrobiology, Singapore as well as in the Laboratory of Prof. Ueli Grossniklaus, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York. He has a number of publications in highly esteemed journals like Science, Nature, Biotechnology Journal, BMC Molecular Biology and Genome. Prof. Imran has to his credit a number of fellowships and awards such as: Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIT Bombay, INFOSYS Prize in Life Sciences, Fellowship of The Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and The Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore. Prof. Siddiqi is a member of Editorial Board of The Journal of Biosciences, Genetics and BMC Plant Biology.

The speaker for the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Imran Siddiqi delivered his lecture on the topic “21st Century Economics GM Crops in the Indian Context: Will the Past Inform the Future?”.

The next awardee for the 6th Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap  Oration Award was Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Sopory who is currently working as SERB Distinguished Fellow of the Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, at ICGEB, New Delhi . He began his academic career in the year 1973 as a Faculty at the School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University and worked there till 1996. His teaching and research career spans over 45 years inclusive of that as Visiting Scientist at Max-Planck-Institute for Plant Breeding Research, Germany; visiting Fulbright fellow at the Department of Botany, University of Texas, USA and Plant Molecular Biology Lab of the 
U.S. Department of Agriculture, USA, and visiting Humboldt Professor at the University of Munich, Germany. He was the first one to work out in detail “the role of glyoxalase pathway in plant stress biology”. His researches have been documented in over 250 articles published in peer reviewed journals. He has been the editor of 13 books and has contributed more than 50 chapters in books. He has been the President of the Indian Society of Plant Physiology and the Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences, India, Allahabad; Indian Society for Plant Physiology and Biochemistry; Indian National Science Academy, Delhi; and the Society for Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology, New Delhi and is a former secretary of the Plant Tissue Culture Association of India. Prof. Sopory has been the recipient of many National and International honours for his pioneering contributions to Scientific Research and Teaching, including the 1987 Shanti Swarup Bhatangar Prize by CSIR, the highest Indian award in the Science and Technology categories. Some of the other notable awards include T. N. Khoshoo Memorial Award, B. M. Johri Memorial Award, NASI Prof. R. N. Tandon Memorial Award, and Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour by the Government of India. He is an elected Fellow of several major Indian science academies. He is the first Indian to receive Corresponding Membership Award of American Society for Plant Biology in 2010. He was the Eleventh Vice Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University from Jan. 2011 to Jan 2016.

The speaker for the occasion, Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Sopory delivered his lecture on the topic “Strategies towards Developing Plant Tolerance under Abiotic Stress”

Prof. (Dr.) Girish Sahni was the chair of the session during the occasion. In his  address, he thanked the Guest Speakers, Prof. (Dr.) Imran Siddiqi and Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Sopory for taking out time from their busy schedule to grace the University with their solicit presence and agreeing to enlighten the audience with their vast knowledge and experience.

Prof. Promila Pathak  presented a vote of thanks. She thanked DUI, Prof. Shankarji Jha for gracing the occasion as Chief Guest, despite his busy schedule, and Dr. Girish Sahni, for presiding over the session.  She on behalf of the department, also expressed deep regards and heartiest thanks to Honourable Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Prof (Dr.) Raj Kumar for his guidance, support and encouragement. Seminar on “Abiding legacy of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’ held at PU

Department of Defence and National Security Studies in collaboration with 
Gyan-Setu a Think Tank of Panjab University organized a one day seminar on “Abiding legacy of Maharaja Ranjit Singh” here today to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji.

Sh. VP Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh in his address, compared the reign of Sikhs with the reign of Bismark in the Germany, and talked about the history of Sikhs with the relations to the history of Rajputs in the Rajasthan and highlighted the key common points between them. He said that the Napoleon was the contemporary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the statecraft of the both 
were quite same and also said that Punjab being the Gateway to the Country had to bear the brunt of various invasions, as a result Punjab State produced warriors.He further added that Maharaja Ranjit Singh left an enduring legacy for successive generations. He was the first ruler to forge Punjabi identity across various faiths. As a secular and inclusive ruler, he combined principles of Meeri (Governance) with Peeri (Faith) in a commendable manner. 

 Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University in his address talked 
about the life sketch of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and particularly about his army and his patronage into the arts, history and literature. He also highlighted about his contribution in building gurudwaras and temples. He said that Maharaja Ranjit Singh was the most secular ruler.

Earlier, Lt. Gen. K.J. Singh while welcoming the guests, introduced the theme of the seminar and how that theme got developed. He elaborated that the theme was transition of Sikhs from Baba Nanak to Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He further added that Punjab of Maharaja Ranjit Singh included more than 50% of Muslims of Punjabi descent that shows the true secular way of his State, he talked about the sense of inclusion that Maharaja had that was inherited from the Sikh Gurus and other Sikh intellectuals 
as well.

Prof. Indu Banga, Prof. Emeritus, the keynote speaker of the day talked about Sikh history studies, as well as of the history of Punjab. She started from the beginning of Sikh religion and traced it to reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. She talked about the transition of Sikh religion, from Guru Nanak Dev to Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Starting from Guru Nanak she told about the spiritual dimension of the Sikh religion and the chief transition happened from the Guru Arjun Dev from which the Sikh Religion transformed into a religion of protectors. She told about the resistance of Sikhs against Mughals which made them a Martial Race and after the last guru Shri Guru
Gobind Singh, Maharaja Ranjit Singh continued that legacy, the Statecraft of Maharaja was based on the teachings of Sikh religion and it was the kind of Kingdom where people of all faiths lived in peace. He was the one who really cultivated Punjabi sentiments during his reign he never plundered wealth and ornaments of women. Guru Gobind Singh prepared a manual which shows what are do’s and don’ts for Sikh.

Lt. Gen. Surinder Singh called Maharaja Ranjit Singh as one of the foremost 
Sikh Emperor, he said that he (Ranjit Singh) had legacy of its own by constructing great infrastructure and encourage education and build a great empire. He became part of folklores in Punjab. He gave a few anecdotes and small stories about Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Dr Jaskaran Singh Waraich, Cchairperson, Department of Defence and National Security Studies, PU gave the vote of Thanks in the end of the Inaugural Session.There were speakers who discussed about the legacy which all Sikh gurus and Maharaja Ranjit Singh carried forward from Baba Nanak to the time period of Maharaj Ranjit Singh.

TECHNICAL SESSION I Transition of Sikh from Baba Nanak Dev to Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Guru Nanak Dev was greater admirer of Baba Farid and Sant Kabir. He believes that god is one. Communalism has no space in his thinking. Baba Nanak said that we should serve people to serve god and meditation is the key to peaceful living. He talked about his thinking on religious and social matters. He was popularly known as sher-e- Panjab. And also give beautiful interpretation of various life instances of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, also 
talked about the policy of Sikh misals. And much of the literature related to him was missed because it was all in Persian. His focus was on the human resource development. He also highlighted that Gurumukhi is the legacy of Guru Nanak Dev and with-it Guru Nanak empowered Punjabis. 

TECHNICAL SESSION II Lessons in security and military domains were discussed in seminar. Speakers talked about the military of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and what modernisation was there in his military.

International Workshop on Health Care for the Elderly

Chandigarh April 24, 2019

 The Four day international workshop on ”health care for older population; 
learning from IndoCanadian Experiences” was inaugurated today at ICSSR seminar hall, Panjab University Chandigarh. The workshop is collaborative venture between Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada and Department of Geography, PU Chandigarh. The grant has been awarded by SICI under the Shastri Development Programme Grant funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development jointly to Prof Smita Bhutani at Panjab University and Prof Rosenberg at Queen’s University. 

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, P.U, appreciated 
the timely initiative which he felt was socially a very relevant issue. He stressed the need to take the collaboration further and learn from each other to the mutual benefit of both societies and cultures. 

Prof Rosenberg, the Canadian collaborator while introducing the theme said ageing was one of the three major challenges being faced by a rapidly urbanising world. There was a requirement in this light to re-imagine health and social systems to make the elderly a happy and valued segment of our society.  

Prof Nayak from NEHU, Shillong delivered the keynote address and talked about India’s traditional regard for the elderly which was gradually dwindling as the elderly were perceived as a burden in the family as well as in society at large. He brought out the need to take steps against abuse of the elderly, create aged-friendly infrastructure and increase the number of Gerontology units. 

 The Workshop will see the participation of research scholars, senior citizens, health care professionals, care-givers, academicians and non-governmental organisations. It will include 4 technical sessions and three activity sessions along with field visits to old-age homes and hospitals. 

 The day concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Prof Simrit Kahlon, 
Chairperson, Department of Geography.

यदि आप भी रिलायंस जियो के ग्राहक हैं तो आपको जल्द ही झटका लग सकता है, क्योंकि खबर है कि जियो अपने टैरिफ प्लान की कीमत में इजाफा करने की तैयारी में है।

एक रिपोर्ट में कहा गया है कि रिलायंस जियो इन्फोकॉम इस वित्त वर्ष में टैरिफ की कीमतें बढ़ा सकती है।

दरअसल मामला कुछ ऐसा है कि जियो को फाइबर और टावर लगाने में काफी खर्च लग रहा है। इसके अलावा कई सारे प्रोजेक्ट्स पर भी कंपनी का करीब 9 हजार करोड़ का सालाना खर्च हो रहा है।

ऐसे में कंपनी अपनी सेवाओं की कीमतें बढ़ाने का फैसला ले सकती है। इन्वेस्टमेंट बैंक जेपी मॉर्गन की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार जापान की सॉफ्टबैंक जियो में 14-21 हजार करोड़ निवेश कर सकती है। 

गौरतलब है कि वोडाफोन-आइडिया और एयरटेल जैसी कंपनियां भी पूंजी जमा करने के लिए योजनाएं बना रही हैं।

ऐसे में जियो को भी अपनी प्लानिंग करनी होगी। कहा जा रहा है कि वोडाफोन-आइडिया व एयरटेल राइट इश्यू से कीरब 25-25 हजार करोड़ इकट्ठा करने में जुटी हैं।

अभी हाल ही में आई एक रिपोर्ट में सामने आया था कि जियो सिर्फ 600 रुपये में जियो गीगाफाइबर लॉन्च करेगा।

इस कीमत पर ग्राहकों को ब्रॉडबैंड, लैंडलाइन और टीवी की सुविधा मिलेगी। इस प्लान के तहत ग्राहकों को अनलिमिटेड कॉलिंग भी मिलेगी।

FIRST CONVOCATION OF PU ISSER

Chandigarh April 24, 2019

Panjab University Institute of Social Science Education and Research,  (ISSER) organised the first convocation on April 24, 2019 to award B. A. Hons. degrees to the first batch of its students. 

Professor Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor in his inspiring convocation address 
urged the graduating batch of 2018 to become good will ambassadors and carry forward its legacy. He deeply acknowledged the interdisciplinary nature of courses being taught at PU ISSER. While applauding the potential of ISSER to change the societal mindset, Professor Raj Kumar said that science can offer us relevant tools for change which can be effectively utilised by social sciences. Such a change he said would help reach out to the deprived sections of society in a globalizing world.

 Professor Swarnjit Kaur, Chairperson, PU ISSER welcomed the dignitaries, 
graduating batch of 2018 and their parents. She highlighted the innovative nature of the Five Years programme and shared with the audience the speculator accomplishments of graduating batch some of whom had come from Mumbai and Bangalore to attend the function. The batch of 36 students had 100% success rate with five distinctions securing more than 80% marks.  

The Convocation was followed by the first Alumni Meet of the Institute during which many of the fresh graduates became members of PU Alumni Association. They also had an informal experience sharing session with fruitful suggestions.

Registrar Panjab University Professor Professor Karamjeet Singh, Controller of Examination, Professor Parvinder Singh and Dean Faculty of Arts Professor Ronki Ram were the guests of honour. Emeritus Professors of social Sciences Professor Pam Rajput and Professor Bhupinder Brar also graced the occasion, apart from Deans Student Welfare Professor Emanual Nahar and Professor Neena Capalash, Dean Alumni Relations Professor Deepti Gupta and Hony. Director & Deputy Director Human Resource Development Centre, Founder Coordinator Professor Reeta Grewal along with Chairpersons and faculty members of different Social Science departments.

PU Post-Doctoral Fellow Bags Prestigious Research Grant for Spain Visit

Dr. Neha Miglani Post-Doctoral Fellow, at University Institute of Fashion 
Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT&VD) Panjab University Chandigarh has been selected for a prestigious grant of US$1500 which is awarded to South Asian Scholars attending the International Association of Media and Communication Researchers (IAMCR) 2019 conference at the Universidad Complutence de Madrid, Spain this year. She is among the 9 women selected worldwide to receive the grant from IAMCR which is a noted body of media researchers worldwide and is an authority in media research. 

21 travel grants at IAMCR 2019 have been offered to early-stage scholars to 
present their research work. The grants have been offered to 9 women and 12 men from 17 different countries including Argentina, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Cuba, India, Jamaica, Pakistan, South Africa, and Turkey.  A record number of total of 3500 papers were sent to IAMCR 2019 this year out of which these research grants were offered on the basis of quality of research work. 

Dr. Miglani is currently working on various facets of fashion and lifestyle 
journalism, the professionals and personal challenges and conflict of these 
journalists.

Assessors of the Zone of National Assessment Accreditation Council (NAAC) conducted one day Assessors Orientation Programme

Assessors of the Zone of National Assessment Accreditation Council (NAAC)  conducted one day Assessors Orientation Programme, here today wherein the assessors neighboring states  across varied specialties were trained for the day long Workshop. On behalf of Panjab University, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) hosted programme in collaboration with NAAC.  The programme was attended by the Vice-Chancellors, Deans, Senior Professors and Directors of the various Institutions.

The programme was inaugurated by Professor R.K. Singla, Dean Research 
Promotion Cell, Panjab University, Chandigarh. He welcomed the delegates and give brief view of the history and achievements of Panjab University.  He spoke about essence of quality of higher education institutions and emphasize that to stay globally competitive is a need in the quality enhancement in the processes and the stakeholders of higher education institutes.  

Professor B.S.Ghuman, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala while 
addressing the gathering said that the time for change in the outlook and perspective education delivery should be there and only those institutes shall be able to survive institutes in the competitive world who will stay verse with the latest global challenges.  He said  to all the assessors that during the visit for accreditation of the institutes, they should stay not only visual but also consider for the local situations and challenges with the institutes’ faces.

Delivering the 1st Orientation Course lecture, Dr B.S.Madhukar, Former 
Advisor, NAAC gave an overview and work flow of revise accreditation framework that NAAC has recently introduced in an interactive session. He also cleared all the queries of the assessors.

Dr Pratibha Singh, Deputy Advisor, NAAC gave the overview of ICT enabled 
validation and verification of NAAC accreditation.  She emphasized that 70% NAAC accreditation is based on quantitative criteria and 30% are based on qualitative metrics.  She made aware the attendees about the online portal which NAAC has created for all the possible interfaces with respect to assessment and accreditation process. 

Dr Rajiv Parihar, Consultant to NAAC later explained the process of group 
activities wherein the attendees were divided into seven NAAC criteria groups and each of the group was given a specific  problem  to discuss , which was then presented by each team leader.

Physics Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized 5th Prof. B.M. Anand memorial lecture which was delivered by Prof. Sandip P. Trivedi, Director, Tata Institute of fundamental research (TIFR) Mumbai, here today.

Prof. Sandip P. Trivedi started his lecture on “Quantum entanglement” starting with the basics of quantum mechanics and the theory of John Bell  with the idea that probability cannot be negative. He built up the quantum entanglement theory with the idea from the solid state physics and Quantum mechanics and gradually introduced the concept of quantum computers. He demonstrated the work on quantum computers in India 
and abroad and speculated that Quantum computer will be a reality in near future and the computer speed will increase many folds.

Prof. Navdeep Goyal, Chairperson, Department of Physics gave introduction about physics department and regarding Prof. B.M. Anand Lecture. Prof. Arun K. Grover, Ex- Vice Chancellor of PU explained the history of Prof. B.M. Anand  Lecture with  life and works of Prof. B.M. Anand. Prof. K.N. Pathak, Ex-Vice Chancellor of Panjab University introduced Prof. Sandip P. Trivedi and briefed about his lecture. 

The programme was attended by nearly 250 delegates consisting of students and faculty members of PU and nearby institutes.  Students showed great interest and their queries were answered by the speaker.

One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Gold: Opportunities in the Agri and Solid Waste discussed at PU

5th workshop of Swachhata Action Plan (SAP), a high impact event, on the
theme, ‘Management of Biomass (Agri waste and Municipal waste) into Bioresources’, under the aegis of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, was organized by DST-Centre for Policy Research, Panjab University, Chandigarh in association with Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC), here today.

The proceedings of the event were kicked off by address of Prof Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instructions, Panjab University, who insisted to look at the holistic development of agriculture with special focus on Agri-waste management, in terms of natural philosophy, taking examples from Upanishads.

The Chief Principal Secretary to CM (Punjab), Mr. Suresh Kumar, who graced the occasion as a chief guest, reiterated that Punjab Government was all set to tackle the problem of solid waste management and looked forward to support from Central Government. 

The Keynote address was delivered by Dr. M H Mehta, a Padma Shri awardee, who heads the Gujarat Life Sciences in Ahmedabad. Dr. Mehta highlighted the issue of 20 day window from paddy to wheat transition, which makes in situ remediation  of Paddy straw as a promising solution.  He demonstrated application of customized microbial consortium, which has been successfully practiced in Gujarat and Maharashtra. This was 
welcomed very enthusiastically by the farming community. 

A senior scientist, Dr. P Shanmugam, from CSIR-CLRI, Chennai, shared the successful setup of various Biogas plants through-out the world, with a specific community level low-economy model for countries like Peru. He has also set up a one of its kind horizontal digester in UK. The event also witnessed high-powered deliberations on Bio-refineries by Dr. R K Jain from UNIDO, Delhi and Waste valorization strategies by Dr. Sudesh Kumar from CIAB, Mohali; and Bio-Fuels.

The farming community, represented by Jang Bahadur Singh Sangha, Mr. Vikram Ahuja and Mr. Rashid Hassan, also laid out their challenges for the Industry and Academia to work upon and offered their fields and other facilities for trials of innovative technologies.  

The industry, represented by Mr. Anil Kumar, Executive Director, Shreyans 
Industries Ltd., also pitched in very enthusiastically during the panel discussion, sparking the idea of using Corporate Social Responsibility to its full potential to resolve the problem of Agri-waste management. Adding further to it, Mr. Rohit Khaitan from Kuantum Papers Ltd., suggested that revamping of state policies relating bio-fuel production, will aid in reducing the dependency of the country on import of crude oil.  

Dr. Anita Aggarwal, Scientist E, DST, GoI, introduced the theme of the 
workshop and stressed upon the need to bring all the stakeholders together for an inclusive and sustainable solution. Dr. Jatinder Kaur Arora, further urged the forum to brainstorm ideas in order to formulate viable recommendations to the government and briefed about the initiatives of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology in the theme area. 

Prof. S S Marwaha, Chairman, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), shared some of the initiatives of the PPCB such as door to door awareness programmes relating to harmful effects of stubble burning. He also urged the farming community to join hands with the regional institutes and the industry to execute the 3Rs(Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) strategy in this region. 

The event culminated with a panel discussion, led by Mr. K S Pannu, Secretary, Agriculture and Soil Conservation, Punjab and steered by Prof. Rupinder Tewari, Coordinator, DST-CPR at Panjab University. It was equally represented by both Industry 
and Academia and scrutinized the dynamics of managing agri-waste in the most sustainable manner. Mr. Pannu quoted the Gurbani, saying that ‘whatever comes from the soil, must go back to it’.

The event witnessed informal interactions between the government bodies, scientific community (scientists and research scholars), farming communities and Industries and served to set a strong foundation for an action oriented resolution.

Annual Function organized at PU Girls Hostel No. 3

Chandigarh

The Sarojini hall (GH3), Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated Annual Day function where Ms. Harvinder Khetal, Assistant Editor of English Daily, Prof Parminder Singh Ahluwalia, Director Sports, and Ms. Renuka  Salwan, Director, Public Relations, Panjab University Chandigarh were Guests of Honour who gave away prizes to the committee members, winners of sports day and of various events like Wall magazine, Rangoli, mehandi, poster making and essay writing competitions organized in the hostel 
throughout the year. 

Prof. Emanual Nahar (DSW) and Prof. Neena Capalash DSW (W) also graced the occasion by their presence. The residents had prepared a video showing the year’s activities, which was also a tribute to the outgoing residents depicting memories which they had cherished in the hostel during their stay.  

The function ended with the motivational speech by the chief guest who happens to be a winner of Prem Bhatia Fellowship for young journalist, a prestigious  national  level award and an alumni of the English and mass communication department of Panjab University. In the end Dr. Ravneet Kaur, warden congratulated and wished all the best to the outgoing residents for their new endeavours.
