PU Faculty elected as President of SBRT

  Professor Sanjay Chhibber of the Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been elected as the President of the ‘Society for Bacteriophage Research and Therapy (SBRT)’ at the ongoing Annual Conference at Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore from 12th to 13th December, 2019.  The theme of the International Conference is “Paradigm Shift in Antimicrobial Therapy-Antibiotics to Bacteriophages” and is being attended by Scientists from India and abroad.  The Conference is being supported by DST-SERB, DBT, CSIR, INSA, SFAM and other International agencies.

        Prof. Chhibber has done pioneering work on bacteriophage and its associated products like depolymerases and endolysins in treating bacterial infections using animal models.  The role of well characterized phages and associated proteins in the eradication of biofilms of klebsiella prenmoniae and methicillian resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has also been evaluated in his laboratory.  He has published more than 35 research papers on bacteriophages in national and international journals of repute. He has 5 patents and book chapters on bacteriophage to his credit.  He has been promoting the beneficial effects of bacteriophages not only in therapy but in other areas as well by delivering invited talks at different platforms in India.

The Symposium & Alumni Meet “Frontiers in Biochemistry”, 2019 was organized by the Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh on 29th -30th November, 2019 sponsored by UGC-SAP, UGC, New Delhi with Dr. Dipti Sareen and Dr. Nirmal Prabhakar as the Organizing Secretaries.

The Symposium & Alumni Meet "Frontiers in Biochemistry", 2019 was organized by the Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh

            The symposium started with the inaugural session having Prof.  H.M. Dani an alumnus and Former Dean (Faculty of Sciences) & Head, Department of Biochemistry, P.U. , Chd  as the guest of honour and Prof. Sarit K Das, Director IIT Ropar  as the keynote speaker. The address entitled as “Micro fluidics devices in Chemical Biology”  was exciting, thought-provoking and stressed upon the need of interdisciplinary marriage of all kinds of Medical and Engineering Sciences. This was followed by the Young Scientists session comprising of six oral presentations and fourteen poster presentations judged by our eminent alumni from PGI and other CRICK institutes. The alumni interacted with the students and faculty of the department in the evening with musical games and dinner.

            The talks on next day  were on the mesmerizing work being carried out by  the eminent scientists,  Dr.  J. Agrewala (IIT- Ropar),  Dr. Charu Sharma (IMTECH, Chd) , Dr. P. Guptasarma ( IISER,Mohali) and Dr. Monika Garg  (NABI, Mohali). A special session on “Innovative Practices & Patents” was the highlight of the symposium with three talks delivered by faculty , Prof. Bishwajit Kundu ( IIT-Delhi), Dr. Divya Kaush (PSCST ), Dr. Indrani Ghosh (Intellectual Protective Unit, CSIR). The Symposium concluded with prize distribution and vote of thanks in the Valedictory Session.

 ‘Coming to Alma Mater is like a pilgrimage’, said Mr. Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner of India(CEC) and also
Alumnus of Panjab University while addressing at the Annual Global Alumni Meet hosted by Panjab University Alumni Association(PUAA), here today at  PU. While sharing the transition of Panjab University from Lahore to the present location at Chandigarh, he shared his personal and professional links to the different institutes of PU.

            He urged the youth to be disrupters by becoming innovators and initiating start ups which is the need of the nation. He urged all to individually and collectively be part of the change to take the country to greater heights.

            While appreciating PU in organizing this Alumni Meet and also simultaneously commemorating 3 events namely 550 years of the Guru Nanak Dev Ji, 150 Years of Mahatma Gandhi and 100 years of PU Honours School, said that all these events fill the gap between the vision and its practice. The leanings from each of these metamorphosed into movements led by these individuals who talked of things that were much ahead of times. In their own way, each of them transcended time and left an impact that is felt even today. He highlighted that the PU has had the good fortune of having been nurtured by teachers and administrators who were nothing short of Legends.

            He further added that by virtue of its history, achievements, the character of its institutions and the thread that
binds it to the past, PU has both a national stature as well as international acclaim. Over the years, the University has emerged as an institution that is at the frontier of innovative teaching practices, academic research, and interdisciplinary approach.

महत्तवाकंाक्षी अभियान सक्षम 2.0 हेतू परिवेश अध्यन, विज्ञान, ई0वी0एस0 के मोडयुलस का आनावरण उपायुक्त पंचकूला मुकेश कुमार आहूजा ने लघु सचिवालय के सभागार में किया।

            Mia Yen, Counsul General of Canada in Chandigarh discussed India Canada relations and emphasised the significant contribution of Indian students to the economy of Canada. She also shared her views on women empowerment, gender equality and dynamic bilateral relations. She shared that in last one year, there is an increase of trade between the two countries by 60%.

            Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his welcome address said that this event is being organized to create a strong bond with the Alumni. This will also help to revive all Alumni Chapters spread all over India and the ones established overseas. He said that he is looking forward to people gathered here to reconnect and relive their moments and be the Ambassadors of PU.

            Eight PU achievers Sunil Arora, Harit Nagpal, Ambassador Prof. Paramjit Sahai, Prof. Balram Gupta, Dr. Jaspreet S. Dhau, Dr. Arun Arora, Mrs Keshni Anand Arora, Harish Chander Sharma and Dr. Gambhir were honoured during the event.

            Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean Alumni Relations and Secretary of PUAA informed about various events being planned for the 2 days event for the Alumni. This reunion ignited the memories of past days among all the alumni members, she added.

            Mr. Sunil Arora, CEC visited Boys Hostel No. 1, PU where he stayed for few months with his brother for the preparation of administrative services. He said that visit to his hostel filled him with nostalgia which has taken him back to his student life. He inaugurated Wall of Alumni in the Common Room of BH-1 which had pictures of ex-residents who achieved distinguished position in their life like Lt. Captain Vikram Batra (Martyr), Naunihal Singh (Inspector General of Police, Punjab), Lt. Vikas Kundu (Indian Army), Pawan Kumar (Crime Branch, Chandigarh Police), Malwinder Kang (B.J.P Spokesperson, Punjab State), Dr. Manoj Kumar Teotia (CRRID, Chandigarh), Kuljeet Singh Nagra (M.L.A. from Fatehgarh Assembly, Punjab), Anmol Rattan Sidhu ( Addl. Solicitor General of India). Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare(DSW) and Prof. Neena Capalash, DSW(W), Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Warden, Boys Hostel No. 1 and all other Wardens of Boys and Girls Hostels were present on the occasion.

             A  first ever Hostel Magazine of Boys Hostel No. 3, connecting residents and the Hostel Alumni, was launched during the event. It carries memorable moments of the residents and the alumni visiting the hostels time to time during the year.  This was published under the supervison of Dr. Sanjeev Gautam as editor-in-chief and Sh. Saransh Fazilka as Editor.

            There was a ‘Fire Side Chat on Brand Building for Higher Education Institutes’ by Dr. Sandeep Goyal, an advertising Veteran and Mr. Harit Nagpal, CEO, Tata Sky.

            The day 1 of the event concluded with a Light, Sound and Sight show on Guru Nanak Devji and the lighting of lanterns and lamps marking 100 years of the Panjab University Honours School.

            Large number of PU Alumni, PU Fellows, Former VCs, Dignitories from the City, Chairpersons, PU Officials, Faculty and students were present on the occasion.

            Mr. Arora made a courtesy visit at the residence of Mr. R.S.Bawa, former Principal of Government College, Hoshiarpur who was teacher of his elder brother and brother in law.

उपायुक्त मुकेश कुमार आहूजा जिला बाल संरक्षण एवं कल्याण विभाग द्वारा पोस्को एक्ट के तहत बच्चों की सुरक्षा को लेकर आयोजित कार्यशाला को संबोधित करते हुए।

उपायुक्त मुकेश कुमार आहूजा जिला बाल संरक्षण एवं कल्याण विभाग द्वारा पोस्को एक्ट के तहत बच्चों की सुरक्षा को लेकर आयोजित कार्यशाला को संबोधित करते हुए।

पंचकूला, 22 नवंबर- उपायुक्त मुकेश कुमार आहूजा ने कहा कि हमारे समाज में ऐसे घृणित तत्व भी मौजूद है जो बच्चों को उनकी मासूमियत की वजह से आसानी से शिकार बना लेते है। ऐसे में हमारा दायित्व बनता है कि हम जिम्मेदार समाज का निर्माण करें जोकि सजगता और सह्र्दयता तथा कानूनी प्रावधानों द्वारा असमाजिक तत्वों से बच्चों की सुरक्षा कर सके। श्री आहूजा आज यहां जिला सचिवालय के सभागार में जिला बाल संरक्षण एवं कल्याण विभाग द्वारा पोस्को एक्ट के तहत बच्चों की सुरक्षा को लेकर एक दिन की कार्यशाला के अवसर पर महिला बाल विकास, स्वास्थ्य विभाग, बाल संरक्षण यूनिट, पुलिस विभाग व महिला थानों व अन्य संबंधित विभागों के स्टेक होल्डर्स को संबोधित कर रहे थे।

उपायुक्त मुकेश कुमार आहूजा जिला बाल संरक्षण एवं कल्याण विभाग द्वारा पोस्को एक्ट के तहत बच्चों की सुरक्षा को लेकर आयोजित कार्यशाला को संबोधित करते हुए।


उपायुक्त ने कहा कि बच्चों की सुरक्षा का विषय समाज के लिये अत्यंत गंभीर है। अकसर देखा जाता है कि बच्चों के मामलों में विशेषकर बालिकाओं के साथ होने वाले यौन अपराधों को लेकर लोग मामलों को सामाजिक तौर पर ही सुलझाने का प्रयास करते है और इसमें सामाजिक लांछन से बचने के लिये कानूनी प्रावधानों की तरफ ध्यान नहीं देते। इससे इस तरह के जघन्य अपराध करने वाले घृणित व्यक्ति कड़ी सजाओं से बच जाते है और मासूम बच्चों को न्याय नहीं मिल पाता। हम सभी का कत्र्तव्य हैं कि हम सजग होकर सभी से बच्चों का ध्यान रखे ताकि इस तरह की समस्यायें न उभर सके। उन्होंने कहा कि यदि पोस्को के अंतर्गत कोई मामला आता है तो इसमें सख्ती से कानून को लागू करना चाहिए ताकि समाज में इस तरह के घृणित अपराध करने वाले अपराधी को कड़ा संदेश जाये और वह अपराध करने के बारे में सोच भी न सके।


पोस्को संशोधन अधिनियम 2019 के बारे में चर्चा करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि पहले यह एक्ट केवल लड़कियों के यौन प्रताड़ना करने वालों पर लागू होता था। 2019 में इस एक्ट में संशोधन किया। अब यह एक्ट लड़कों व लड़कियों के लिये समान रूप से लागू किया गया है।

उपायुक्त मुकेश कुमार आहूजा जिला बाल संरक्षण एवं कल्याण विभाग द्वारा पोस्को एक्ट के तहत बच्चों की सुरक्षा को लेकर आयोजित कार्यशाला को संबोधित करते हुए।


बाल मजदूरी की रोकथाम पर जिक्र करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि बाल मजदूरी को रोकने के लिये भी सरकार ने सख्त कानून बनाये है। 14 साल से कम आयु के बच्चों को चाय की दुकानों, ढाबों, खदानों, भट्ठों और अन्य खतरनाक रोजगार में सम्मलित करना भी अपराध है। ऐसा करवाने वाले व्यक्ति पर एक लाख रुपये जुर्माना और एक साल सश्रम कारावास का प्रावधान है। छोटे बच्चों से भीख मंगवाना में चाहे उसके माता पिता ही क्यों न शामिल हो, उनको भी दोषी माना जायेगा। माता पिता होने से वे इस बाल अपराध से नहीं बच सकते। ऐसे दोषी व्यक्ति को पांच साल की सजा व एक लाख रुपये का जुर्माना हो सकता है। किसी भी बच्चे को नशीली दवां, शराब व तंबाकू उत्पाद बेचना कानूनी अपराध है। दोषी पाये जाने वाले व्यक्ति को सात वर्ष का कठोर कारावास व एक लाख रुपये के जुर्माने का प्रावधान है।


उन्होंने कहा कि बच्चों के संरक्षण के लिये बाल संरक्षण सेवा को बच्चों के लिये सुरक्षित माहौल प्रदान करने के लिये सेवाओं के समूह के रूप में तैयार किया गया है। इसमें बच्चों की देखभाल, संरक्षण तथा विकास के लिये कार्यक्रमों के अतिरिक्त वर्तमान की बाल योजनाओं का एकीकरण किया गया है ताकि संगठित रूप से बाल संरक्षण व बाल विकास की योजनायें चलाई जा सके। उन्होंने कहा कि जिला बाल संरक्षण इकाई की तरफ से गरीब एकल व अनाथ बच्चों की पढ़ाई हेतू एक से 18 साल के बच्चों को सपोन्सरशिप व फोस्टर केयर स्कीम के तहत 2000 रुपये मासिक दिये जाते है। यह लाभ परिवार में से केवल दो बच्चों को दिया जा सकता है।


इस अवसर पर मास्टर ट्रेनर रंजन शर्मा ने किशोर न्याय संरक्षण अधिनियम और पोस्को के बारे में विस्तृत जानकारी दी। बचपन बचाओ के राज्य कोर्डिनेटर पुनीत शर्मा, बाल कल्याण कमेटी की चेयरमैन वंदना गुप्ता, बाल संरक्षण आयोग की सदस्य डाॅ प्रतिभा ने भी बैठक में स्टेक होल्डर्स के प्रश्नों का विस्तारपूर्वक उत्तर दिया।

2 days seminar on Academic writings commenced at PU

Prof. Krishna Kumar, Padma Shri, Former Director NCERT, Honorary Professor, Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh emphasised the need of writings and drafting of the writing again and again to make it publishable, at the inaugural session of 2 days National Seminar cum Workshop on Academic Writings: Addressing the
contemporary challenges” organized by Department of Education, here today. He mentioned   the detailed processes and the importance of academic writings in communicating our ideas. He showed his concern on the declining quality of publications in the present day.   He emphasised that writing is an expression of thought where one has to actively understand reach to the mind of the reader. Prof. Shankar ji  Jha  Dean University Instructions and officiating Vice Chancellor in his address said that  interdisciplinary research is need of the hour and expressed his concern  that Sanskrit has been neglected and needs to be bought to mainstream research area. He also mentioned that scholarly articles are the bridge to express our heritage and modern work.

Professor Lakhwinder Singh, Professor of Economics, Punjabi University, Patiala discussed that, to become a successful writer, the two lessons he learnt   that writing first line is the most difficult and right timing is very important for a writer to get his articles published. He extensively talked about the new era of knowledge economy where education has been transformed from being a public good to commercial/private good thus, has to a large extent been a stumble block in learning. Earliler, Dr. Kuldeep Kaur, Associate Professor, gave a brief introduction for the program and highlighted the various challenges associated with academic writing. Prof. Latika Sharma, Chairperson, Department of Education, Panjab University paid gratitude to CALEM for bringing together the educationists of high repute for sharing their knowledge. Prof.  Satvinderpal Kaur, program coordinator Department of Education introduced the theme of the program explaining the purpose and objectives of the two days. Panel discussion on Contemporary Challenges before Academic writers was chaired by Professor Kuldip Puri, USOL, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Professor Devinder Singh, Department of Law, Panjab University, Chandigarh discussed the issues of Plagiarism and Academic Integrity.

Addressing the Contemporary Challenges

The Centre for Leadership & Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University Chandigarh under the aegis of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), MHRD, Govt of India is organizing two days’ Seminar cum Workshop on November 21-22, 2019 on Academic Writings: Addressing the Contemporary Challenges at ICSSR Hall, Panjab University. The keynote speaker will be Prof. Krishna Kumar, Padma Shri and Former Director NCERT, New Delhi and Chief Guest for the inaugural session will be Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instruction, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The seminar will bring together the educationists, academicians and researchers from eminent institutions across the length and breadth of the country. The major objectives of the programme are: to gain an appreciation of what quality means in the context of academic writings; to reflect upon the nuances of writing and publication of quality research papers; to develop the ability to appropriately frame and structure a research argument using evidence as per disciplinary conventions; use research as a tool to find out the empirical evidence and write quality reports on social issues to sensitize the society. This programme will equip the participants with necessary academic writing skills and contribute to increase their capability for organizing the idea in a formal structure to enrich the academic literature.

जिला रैड क्रॉस सचिव सविता अग्रवाल ने बताया कि उपायुक्त मुकेश कुमार आहूजा के निर्देशानुसार सैंट जॉन एम्बुलेंस इंडिया हरियाणा राज्य शाखा चंडीगढ़ की जिला स्तरीय एम्बुलेंस प्रतियोगिताओं का आयोजन राजकीय वरिष्ठ माध्यमिक विद्यालय सेक्टर 6 पंचकूला में हुआ।

पंचकूला, 15 नवम्बर- जिला रैड क्रॉस सचिव सविता अग्रवाल ने बताया कि उपायुक्त मुकेश कुमार आहूजा के निर्देशानुसार सैंट जॉन एम्बुलेंस इंडिया हरियाणा राज्य शाखा चंडीगढ़ की जिला स्तरीय एम्बुलेंस प्रतियोगिताओं का  आयोजन राजकीय वरिष्ठ माध्यमिक विद्यालय सेक्टर 6 पंचकूला में हुआ। इन प्रतियोगिताओं में विभिन विद्यालयों की 16 टीमों ने भाग लिया। इन प्रतियोगिताओं का उदेश्य दुर्घटना के समय घायल व्यक्ति को विभिन्न परस्थितियों में  दी जाने वाली प्राथमिक सहायता के बारे मे बेहतर ढंग से सिखाना है।

तृतीय: सार्थक राजकीय वरिष्ठ माध्यमिक विद्यालय सेक्टर 12 ए पंचकूलाइन सभी विजेताओं को रैड क्रॉस सचिव ने स्मृति चिन्ह देकर सन्मानित किया गया। उन्होंने कहा की प्रतिभागियों को इस प्रकार के शिविरों में बढ़चढ़ कर भाग लेना चाहिए, ओर इस जानकारी का ज्यादा से ज्यादा प्रचार प्रसार करें। कार्यक्रम के अंत मे नशा न करने की शपथ भी ली गई । इस  अवसर  पर रमेश चैधरी जिला प्रशिक्षण अधिकारी, नीलम कौशिक प्राथमिक सहायता व गृह परिचर्या ने भी इस अवसर पर अपने विचार सांझे किये । डॉक्टर राजकुमार गोयल , श्रीमती नीलम कौशिक ट्रेनर द्वारा इन प्रतियोगीताओं का संचालन करने में निर्णायक की भूमिका की गई ।

MCC Celebrates Children’s Day

Chandigarh, November 14:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has celebrated Children’s day in the office premises here today.

School Children from Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10-A and Strawberry field, Sector 26 visited the Municipal Corporation Office and witnessed the proceedings of General House Meeting of MCC. During the visit, the students got information about the functioning of Municipal Corporation and the Role of Mayor, Councillors and Commissioner of MCC.

After the visit, the MCC celebrated Children’s day with cake cutting ceremony, during which Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Mayor, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, all the councilors and officers of MCC extended their warm wishes to the children.
