*MC Chandigarh takes strict action against residents for non-segregation of waste throughout city: issued 205 challans to households*
*Chandigarh, July 29:-*
In a determined move to enforce solid waste management rules, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh conducted a special challan drive in different parts of city today. The drive targeted residents who failed to comply with the mandatory household waste segregation norms.
As a result, 205 challans were issued to individuals found handing over unsegregated waste to door-to-door collectors while 34 challans were issued to violators against littering. This action was in line with the Solid Waste Management Rules, which require all citizens to strictly segregate waste at the source — dry waste (paper, plastic, metal, etc.) and wet waste (kitchen and food waste) must be stored and handed over separately.
During the drive, officials not only took punitive action but also educated defaulters about the importance of waste segregation in reducing environmental hazards, improving recycling efficiency, and maintaining cleanliness in the city.
While speaking about the action, MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS said that non-compliance will not be tolerated, and such drives will now be conducted regularly across all sectors. “It is the responsibility of every resident to contribute towards a cleaner Chandigarh,” he stated. “Segregation at source is not a choice — it is the law.”
The Municipal Corporation appeals to all residents to strictly adhere to waste segregation guidelines and support its mission to keep Chandigarh clean, green, and sustainable. Failure to comply will result in penalties without exception.
