65 YEARS OLD OPERATED SUCCESSFULLY AT FORTIS HOSPITAL, MOHALI FOR BRAIN CLOT

–Neuronavigation proves to be game changer for brain, spine surgeries – Dr. Anupam Jindal

–Increases life expectancy, surgery accuracy and decreases complication rate

Solan, November 7, Recently a 65 years old lady, Mrs. Surinder Kaur with a brain clot, located deep inside the brain, was operated upon successfully at Fortis Hospital Mohali. The clot had been pressing vital structures leading to an unconscious state. She was operated on in an emergency and recovered almost completely and was discharged in a conscious state.

Sharing this Dr. Anupam Jindal, Additional Director Neurosurgery, Fortis Hospital Mohali said that the elderly was operated upon using a neuro-navigation technique which has come up as a game-changer for brain and spine surgeries – the most delicate and complicated organs – increasing the life expectancy of patients by 20 years and better quality of life.

He said that the incidence and prevalence of brain Tumors are growing rapidly in India. Every year several thousand people are diagnosed with a brain Tumor which reduces life expectancy by 20 years. Brain Tumors can be and are often, operated upon while awake so that they can assist the surgeon by moving a part of the body or speaking during surgery.

Brain Tumors are devastating lesions that affect the nerve centre of the body. All our functions, from eating to speaking to walking, etc., and all our emotions, from love to hate, are controlled by the brain, the spinal cord, and nerves that are intimately connected. The brain is housed in a rigid shell (skull) and the body maintains a rather homogenous atmosphere, air-conditioned & shockproof, inside the skull.

Unlike the widespread perception of a brain Tumor, many patients of the disease can be cured with current advances in technology and early detection. The diseases affecting these are becoming more common as our aging population is increasing.

Dr. Jindal added that Fortis Hospital, Mohali is now equipped with neuro-navigation and neuro-monitoring systems to enhance patient safety during operations.

Explaining the technique, he added that brain Tumors, when located deep inside the brain or when found near critical structures, require special methods so that function of nearby areas can be preserved and damage can be minimized. Neuro-navigation identifies these structures and guides neurosurgeon to go through a path of least trauma. Spinal cord surgery especially when placement of screws and rods we required pauses a similar challenge. The neuro-monitoring system detects if a screw is placed too close to a nerve and hence the placement of screws can be corrected right at the time of surgery-making the surgery less risky.

Symptoms of brain Tumor

—Recurrent headaches, giddiness, vomiting, loss of memory, fits, etc. In a scenario when every year brain Tumor patients are being diagnosed in India, these symptoms are alarming enough.
