In a strong push toward sustainability, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh under its flagship ‘Plastic Mukt Chandigarh’ campaign, conducted a five-day hands-on workshop series on paper bag making across city schools. Timed with World Paper Bag Day, the initiative was conducted in collaboration with Prasanchetas foundation to educate and empower students as environmental change-makers.

From July 10 to 15, hundreds of students across five government schools learned to craft reusable paper bags from old newspapers and waste materials—reinforcing the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR).

The series launched at Government Model High School, Sector 38B, and continued across: July 10 – GMHS, Sector 38B, July 11 – GMSSS, Sector 38 West & GMS, Burail, July 14 – GMSSS, Sector 39 and July 15 – GMHS, RC1, Chandigarh.

Each session saw enthusiastic student participation, with attendees receiving appreciation certificates and being encouraged to lead by example as ‘Swachhata Champions’ in their neighborhoods.

While speaking about the initiative, MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS said that the workshops not only nurtured practical crafting skills but also instilled awareness about the environmental impact of plastic and the importance of adopting eco-friendly alternatives like cloth, jute, or paper bags.

MCC reaffirmed its mission for a plastic-free Chandigarh, building a movement rooted in youth-led climate action and community engagement.
