Department of Biotechnology, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised the 11th five days workshop from 3rd to 7th June on “Fundamentals of Biorisk Management” in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories with support from the U.S Department of States which concluded, here today.
According to Prof. Neena Capalash, workshop organizer, the main purpose of the workshop was to enable the participants to understand laboratory biosafety and biosecurity issues associated with pathogens and other biological materials used in the research laboratories and clinical set ups.
During the five days the participants were oriented to the subject of risks associated while working with disease causing bacteria specially the drug resistant pathogens which need to be handled with care and have to be disposed off carefully to reduce the risk of spreading them into the environment. Use of personnel protection equipment, biohazardous waste disposal and incident management was also covered.
This type of workshops are very important when multiple drug resistance in pathogens have become a major challenge to control microbial infections. Trained faculty and researchers would act as ambassadors of this cause to further create awareness at their institutions to reduce occupational hazards. The workshop was attended by faculty from Panjab University, local collages and the research scholars working in the area of biological Sciences.
