Patiala, September 1, 2022: The Neurosurgery Team at Fortis Hospital Mohaligave a new lease of life to 65-year-old Rajpura-based resident, who was suffering from brain tumour, via the most advanced technique of Neuro-navigation. Any delay in surgery would have led to permanent loss of vision, and a risk of permanent coma for the patient.

Patient Rajpal had been experiencing severe headaches and his eyesight had weakened over time. Patient Rajpal visitedDr Harsimrat Bir Singh Sodhi, Senior Consultant, Neuro-Spine Surgery, Fortis Mohali,in May 2022. A brain MRI revealed a huge tumour in the back of the brain (left occipital), which was compressing the nerves and affecting his vision. The tumour had a large surrounding edema (inflammation and swelling)which was causing pressure on normal unaffected areas of the brain.Patient Rajpalalso showed signs of high intracranial pressure (increased pressure inside the brain).

Using the most advanced technique of Neuro-NavigationDr Sodhi along with the Neuro-Anaesthesia teamsurgically removed the tumour from Patient Rajpal’s brain using a high-end microscope on 14th May this year. Neuro-navigation is a computer-assisted surgery that allows a surgeon to ‘navigate’ within the brain with precision. The surgery lasted for about three hours during which Dr Sodhi took extra care not to damage the underlying brain and the visual apparatus.

Following expert Neuro-Anaesthesia care in the Neuro ICU, Patient Rajpal had a smooth recovery and was taken off the ventilator within 12 hours of the surgery.

Discussing the case, Dr Sodhi, said, Patient Rajpal’s vision started to improve from the next day of the surgery and within three weeks, his vision had returned to normal. The surgery related to  brain tumours has its own set of challenges. There is always a risk of massive bleeding from the tumour itself, leading to an increase in brain swelling, or there can be formation of a large hematoma (clot) at the operative site post-surgery. The Neuro-Anaesthesia team took all necessary precautions during and after the surgery. All these factors provided an excellent outcome to the patient.”

Dr Sodhi said Patient Rajpal has fully recovered and isleading a normal life today.

Kidney Diseases on the Rise: Lifestyle to blame

Patiala, January 21

Kidney diseases are the seventh common cause of death in India and its prevalence has increased by nearly 30 percent in last 15 years. This is mainly due to lifestyle diseases such as Diabetes and high blood pressure said, Dr. Sunil Kumar, Senior Consultant and Kidney Transplant Surgeon from Fortis Hospital, Mohali while interacting with media here today.

He said, apart from change of lifestyle certain foods/ habits also contribute to development of kidney diseases. These are believed to be consuming too much salt (slow poison/ pinch by pinch killer), pain medications / self-medication, too much sweet, less of water, high protein diet, meat in excess (red meat), processed foods, alcohol, smoking, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, chronic sitting and holding pee for too long. Dr Sunil Kumar has got his training in kidney transplant at PGI Chandigarh and Oxford, England. He has been doing kidney transplants since 11 years and moved from PGI Chandigarh to Fortis Hospital, Mohali three years back.

He said, people are now a days fond of self-medication and consume them for long time without realizing the harmful effects on kidney. Processed foods involve modification of the food from its original form and are now believed to be harmful for our body. Few examples of processed foods are breakfast cereals (like corn flakes), processed cheese, tinned vegetables, savoury snacks, meat products, such as bacon, sausage, ham, salami and “convenience foods”, such as microwave meals or ready meals.

Prevalence of kidney diseases like stones, infection, chronic kidney disease (CKD), drugs related kidney injury, cancer etc have increased manifolds in the last few decades. Also, the fact is that younger individuals between 30-50 years are now more often reporting to doctors with underlying kidney diseases, he said.

CKD is defined as abnormalities of kidney structure or function, present for more than 3 months, with implications on health. Diabetes, hypertension and Glomerulonephritis are the three primary causes for CKD and affects nearly 10 percent of world population and is associated with approx 735,000 deaths annually. Every year 1 lakh new CKD patients are detected and at any given time nearly 130000 patients are receiving hemodialysis. Unfortunately, CKD usually does not cause any symptom in early stages and hence it is difficult to diagnose it early.

If diagnosed with CKD the patients may require hemodialysis or kidney transplant and patients usually do well and can go home within one week of surgery. He stressed that it was important for all of us to follow healthy lifestyle and food habits, so we can avoid developing any kidney disease.

New ray of hope for patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes

Dr. Amit is the first one in North India to perform Loop duodenojejunal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy for Type 2 diabetes. He has more than 1000 surgeries and has many international publications to his credit.

Speaking of first line treatment  for type 2 diabetes he said that it includes losing excess weight, eating a healthful diet, engaging in regular exercise and taking requisite medications. If these drugs don’t work, a person needs to take insulin. Often these traditional treatments for diabetes do not work and patients run the risks of long term complications. Even with good medical control of diabetes, some patients still develop cardiovascular complications, diabetic foot, neuropathy and nephropathy, retinopathy and other complications.

Sharing new line of treatment for patient suffering from Type 2 Diabetes he said that metabolic surgery comes as most effective solution to the problem.

According to the recent international guidelines metabolic surgery is recommended as first line of treatment for Type 2 Diabetes in patients with body mass index of more than 37.5Kg/m2 aimed at bringing it to a point where one has normal blood sugar levels and does not need diabetes medication.

Answering the query on the ways  metabolic surgery causes diabetes remission, Dr Amit Garg shared, “After Metabolic surgery, remission is observed in the days to weeks before any substantial weight loss has occurred.  Metabolic surgery cures Type 2 diabetes by bringing calorie restrictions and hormonal changes. These gastro intestinal hormonal changes cause control of diabetes within few days of the surgery.

“Increasing evidence shows that metabolic surgery can help reduce a person’s risk for a number of serious diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, arthritis and cancer,” notes Dr Amt Garg.

Metabolic surgery is an ideal approach aimed at treating diabetes in non obese patients too.

Metabolic surgery – boon for diabetics, Dr Amit Garg

Dr Garg also added, “All surgeries are performed laparoscopically, with small incisions that are closed with only a few stitches, resulting in fewer complications and a much quicker recovery time for patients.”  The health and quality of life benefits these patients receive from Metabolic surgery and other weight loss methods are tremendous as patients become more mobile, feel better about themselves, have less depression and have better family, social and work lives.
