Prem Bhatia Memorial scholarship for SCS students

Annual scholarships for Mass Communication students started by Prem Bhatia Memorial Trust.

Two students pursuing Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication from the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University have been awarded a scholarship of Rs 20,000 each by the Prem Bhatia Memorial Trust. The 24 year old trust has begun an annual scholarship on need cum merit basis.  

 The two students who have been selected by the academic committee of the department are Krishma, a final year student and Suraj Munjal, a first year student for the award of scholarship this year. Mr. Anand Bhatia, the president of the trust said, The trust is extremely happy to collaborate with the School of Communication Studies, to encourage the students to pursue dreams in the field of journalism.

The Prem Bhatia Memorial Trust was founded in 1995 in memory of the eminent journalist Prem Bhatia. The trust works for improvement of journalism standards in the country. Each year, the trust gives two awards, outstanding political reporting of the year and outstanding environmental reporting of the year, decided by independent juries, specially constituted for this purpose. This scholarship has been instituted by the trust to encourage budding journalists.

 Guru Ravidass Chair for Sant Sahitya Studies Panjab University, organized a two day national seminar on the topic “Sri Guru Nanak Dev: Bani, Philosophy and Contemporary Society on 27-28.05.2019 to commemorate the 550th Birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Shanker Ji Jha, DUI, Panjab University. He discusses that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first Sikh Guru and founder of the faith, should be commemorated with faith and knowledgeable articulations both in academia and social spaces. Dr. Subhash Sharma, Director Hindustan Cooper Ltd. highlights Guru Ji’s service to humanity without any self-interest. In the key Note address Prof. Gurmit Singh, former professor and Dean faculty of languages Guru Nanak Dev University and in Presidential Address Prof. Karamjit Singh, Registrar, Panjab University explained the 
role of Guru ji’s bani and philosophy in the making of secular and tolerant balanced Indian society. The first session was presided by Prof. Nandita and Prof. VK Alankar and Dr. Shiwani Sharma portrayed impact of the philosophy and teaching of Guru Nanak dev.  The other speakers give their views are Prof. Gurmukh Singh, Prof. I.D. Gaur, Dr. Manjinder Singh, Dr Baljit Singh, Dr. Jasbir Singh,Dr.Avtar Singh and Dr Nirmal Singh. 

 The seminar was attended by the large no. of delegates and Chairperson of Guru Ravidas Chair, Prof. Gurpal Singh gave thanks to the guests and delegates.

PU VC Interacts with Post-Doctoral Fellows

In a first of its kind meeting, the Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Raj 
Kumar, today interacted with the Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDF) of the University from a cross-section of departments. The meeting is a part of the attempt to bring the PDF community of university together and work towards higher research goals and find ways of contributing to the university in a more constructive manner. PDF’s from different departments including University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, Centre for Public Health, Anthropology, University Institute of Applied Management Sciences, University Business School, Botany, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences among others were present in the meeting. 

The PDF’s shall be shortly hosting a seminar for PhD scholars of PU to apprise them about procedure and ideas to apply for Post-Doctorate through various agencies in India (under various schemes). The PDF’s shall also start a quarterly digital newsletter related to the research and academic activities of the Post-Doctoral fellows- a unique initiative to update the academic community of PU about the activities undertaken by all PDF’s.  

 It was suggested by the VC to dedicate a special volume of the research papers to PU PDF’s, to be released at the 550th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev ji.

CALEM Workshop at PU concludes

Chandigarh, May 26, 2019

 The concluding day of 7 days national workshop on qualitative research methods in social sciences organised by Centre for Academic Leadership & Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh focussed on the theoretical bases to qualitative research and phenomenology. 

 In first session Prof. S. Srinivas Rao, Chairperson, Zakir Husain Centre for 
Educational Studies, JNU, New Delhi focused on whether theory is a starting point or end point in qualitative research. He focused that in quantitative research is theory driven but in qualitative research one can explore beyond the known and can deliberate upon whether if the findings go with the existing theory or a new theoretical base emerges. 

 In second session Prof. Raj K. Gupta from Department of Education, Panjab 
University dwelled on using phenomenology in social sciences issues. She elaborated on the assumptions and steps for conducting phenomenology. 

The session was followed by valedictory session, where Dr. Kuldeep Kaur, 
Program and CALEM co-coordinator presented the report of seven days of the workshop and participants also shared their experiences about the workshop. 

The chief guest for valedictory session was Prof. Sardara Singh Johl, 
Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda. He emphasised the honesty and integrity to be most important in research both on part of researcher and respondent. Researcher should have latest knowledge of technology but should not be bound by it. He also suggested to provide training in research methods to researchers before they take up research. He shared his own experiences as a researcher and as teacher and 
emphasised the quality of research. He highlighted the misinterpretation of research results among researchers. 

 Earlier, Prof. Satvinderpal Kaur, Program Coordinator introduced the speakers of the day.

PU Senate Meeting

Panjab University Senate considered all the agenda items in its 
meeting here today. 

PU Senate gave felicitations to Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Sh. 
Narendra Modi, for the next term of the NDA Government. It also gave felicitations  for PU fellows Smt. Kirron Kher, Member of Parliament, Dr. Amar Singh, IAS (Retd.), Ludhiana, and former fellow Sh. Manish Tiwari for winning the Lok Sabha elections including PU Alumni Sh. Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Sh. Sukhbir Singh Badal. 

PU Senate welcomed Dr. Paramjit Singh, Principal, Government College, 
Hoshiarpur for his first PU Senate Meeting and also congratulated Sh. D.P.S. Randhawa, for being elected as President, Bar Association, Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chandigarh. 

 PU Senate approved the extension of Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean of 
University Instruction for another year w.e.f. 1.5.2019.        

 PU Senate approved the appointment of Prof. Deepti Gupta, Deptt of English and Cultural Studies as Dean Alumni Relations for a period of one year.

PU Senate, regarding roster of teaching position i.e. Assistant Professors, 
discussed the agenda item and it was resolved that on the basis of revised directions of UGC, a fresh roster be prepared and to be taken to the next Syndicate. 

 PU Senate gave further extension of one year w.e.f June 1, 2019 to Dr. 
Devinder Dhawan, Chief Medical Officer, Bhai Ghanaiya Ji Institute of Health, PU.

PU Senate also decided to prepare a comprehensive policy for all aided 
Colleges and the agenda be taken to the next Syndicate. 

 PU Senate approved the recommendations of Syndicate to rationalise the fee structure and other charges for courses offered in the University Teaching Departments and Regional Centre of Panjab University, Chandigarh for the session 2019-20. The proposed amount for the concessions have been enhanced for the session 2019-20 to  Rs. 
3,16,00,000/- as compared to Rs. 2,46,12,092/- for 2018-19.

Henceforth, the fee structure of the University shall be determined for the 
complete programme/course and not for each academic session. 

As per the recommendations, there shall be no enhancement for the students in ongoing programme for the traditional courses and partially self-financed courses, informed Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, PU. However, for fresh students to traditional courses there shall be an enhancement of Rs. 500/- per annum and thereafter, in the subsequent years (2020-21 onwards), it shall be enhanced @ 5% to be rounded off to the next hundred. In addition, development of Rs. 500/- per annum shall 
also be charged from the students, he added. 

For students seeking fresh admissions in the session 2019-20 for partially 
self-financed courses, there shall be enhancement of 7.5% (subject a ceiling of Rs. 7500/- p.a.) and thereafter, the fee for the subsequent years ( 2020-21 onwards) shall be enhanced @ 5% to be rounded off to next hundred. 
        PU Senate approved for no enhancement in the fees of the following courses:-
1.      (MBA) P.U.R.C. Ludhiana
2.      UIAMS (all courses)
3.      PU Constituent Colleges
a.      BCA
b.      PGDCA
c.      BA B.Com

(i)     Prof. Pam Rajput, Fellow has been invited by the U.N. Women – Multi Country Office, an agency of United Nations for Women, to serve as Advisor and be part of their Advisory Group to help shape their agenda, strategic vision and provide technical support to U.N. Women’s portfolio in four countries, i.e., India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka, while actively playing an advocacy role at the level of national government. 


(ii)    Prof. Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, UIPS has recently been awarded with 
“Pharmaceutical Quality by design (QbD) Excellence Award” by M/s Shengjie Business Management & Consulting Co. Ltd., Shanghai, during a two-day Pharmaceutical Industry Internationalization Strategy Summit held on 16th-17th May 2019 in Shanghai, China.

Day 6 of  National workshop by CALEM

The sixth day of the workshop on Qualitative Research Methods in Social
Sciences organised by Centre for Academic Leadership &
Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab
University, Chandigarh focussed on narratives, testimonies and
ambiguities in issues of equity and social justice in qualitative research. 
Dr Satvinderpal Kaur, the program coordinator introduced the
speakers of the day.  

In the first two sessions Ranjana Padhi, visiting faculty, Tata Institute of
Social Sciences, Mumbai focused on using narrative inquiry and
testimonials as qualitative research methods. She focused on
understanding narratives enquiries in social studies and how narratives
breathe life in quantitative research. Narratives can bring to light the
hardships and coping potentials of suffering peasantry and help to affirm
their voices of sanity against modernization. She described that
testimonies reveal the feelings and thought process of individuals.  She
elaborated that though the silence of individuals is difficult to break to pen
down testimony but when this silence is broken it has lot to search for.
She emphasized the need to construe that testimony is not just a speech,
but a story that depicts the situation of individuals of the community. 
In third session, Prof. S. Srinivasa Rao, Chairperson Zakir Hussain Centre
for Educational Studies, JNU, New Delhi dwelled on conceptual
ambiguities and methodological issues of equity and social justice. He
shared the sociological aspects where it is the part of society to treat each
other differently and the same has been found in primitive society which
were not egalitarian completely. 


 The sessions were very interactive where participants shared their
experiences. He explained that how inequalities in the society are created
with varied kinds of discrimination. He also elaborated on the queries of
the participants.


 
The day concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Kuldeep Kaur, Program and
CALEM Co-coordinator.

PU faculty awarded honorary status by American Society

Dr Kewal Krishan, Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department
of Anthropology Panjab University, Chandigarh has been conferred the status of honorary member of the American Society of Forensic Podiatry (ASFP), Oregon, USA. An honorary member is a distinguished scientist who has provided exceptional service to the Society, and/or the field of forensic science. The honorary status is granted by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors of the Society.

ASFP is an organization of forensic scientists and doctors created for the
advancement of the cause of forensic podiatry and to develop and maintain the highest standards of practice via research, discussion, education, publications. Forensic podiatry deals with the evidence related to human foot at the crime scene. The evidence may comprise of complete and partial footprints, static and dynamic footprints, footwear found at the crime scenes, impressions of the soles inside the footwear, foot remains at the mass disaster sites for criminal investigation and identification.

Dr Krishan is a renowned forensic scientist who has contributed immensely to the development of forensic anthropology and podiatry in India. He has devised some of the new techniques and methods regarding the footprint science which may be helpful in associating footprint with the criminal at the crime scene. Dr Krishan has to his credit more than 183 articles in reputed journals of forensics and anthropology including the chapters in the most coveted Encyclopedias of Forensics and high impact factor journals such as The Lancet.

Engineering graduates of 2018 from PU awarded degrees during the Annual Degree Award Ceremony

The graduates of Panjab University, Chandigarh in the Faculty of
Engineering and Technology during the year 2018 wore the graduation
gowns during the degree award ceremony held here today in the
University Auditorium. 


Total of 863 passed out students of three engineering institutes of
PU namely University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET),
Chandigarh, Dr. S. S. Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical
Engineering and Technology (Dr SSBUICET), Panjab University
Chandigarhand and UIET UIET Swami Sarvanand Giri Panjab University
Regional Centre (SSGPURC) in, Hoshiarpur were awarded the degrees by
Prof. V.K. Malhotra, Member secretary, Indian Council of Social Science
Research, New Delhi. Prof. R.K. Sinha, Director, CSIR-Central Scientific
Instruments Organization, Chandigarh was the Guest of Honour on the
occasion.

The degrees were awarded to 591 graduates and post graduates
from UIET Chandigarh, 162 BE graduates of SSGPURC Hoshiarpur, 162
graduates and post graduates of Dr SSBUICET Chandigarh. 


11 number of Young Assistant Professors and Research Scholars
from UIET Chandigarh, 4 from Dr SSBUICET Chandigarh and 3 from
SSGPURC, Hoshiarpur who published their research work in reputed
journals during the last year were also honoured on the occasion.
 

Prof. V.K. Malhotra, chief guest of the day, delivered the convocation address on the occasion. He emphasized on pursuance of excellence to bring India on the forefronts of technology to provide solutions for mankind. He urged students to reach at par with top performing universities internationally. He stressed on the need for increasing funding for research as well as higher education which should be atleast 2-2.5% of the nation’s GDP. He concluded his address by saying that students must possess relevant skill sets along with an urge to learn to enhance their employment prospects.

Earlier, Prof Raj Kumar, Vice chancellor welcomed the chief guest
and extended felicitations to the students and wished them good luck for
their future. He addressed the students as the future ambassadors of the
institute as well as the country. He narrated contributions of technological
development in the region and appreciated the accomplishments of young
graduates at various platforms. He emphasized that the students should be the providers of jobs and they should deliver in spite of all the hardships. He congratulated all the graduates and urged them to work hard for their bright future.

Engineering graduates of 2018 from PU to be awarded degrees

The graduates of Panjab University Chandigarh in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology during the year 2018 will be wearing their graduation gowns during the Degree Award Ceremony to be held on 25th May 2019 in the University Auditorium at 2 PM. 

Nearly 863 passed out students of three Engineering Institutes of PU namely University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) , Panjab University, Chandigarh. (591), Dr. S. S. Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology (Dr SSBUICET),  Panjab University Chandigarh(110)  and UIET Swami Sarvanand Giri Panjab University Regional Centre (SSGPURC) in, Hoshiarpur(162)  will be awarded the degrees by Prof. V.K. Malhotra, Member secretary, Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi. Prof. R.K. Sinha, Director, CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Chandigarh will be the Guest of Honour on the occasion. The rehearsal for the degree will take place at venue at 8 am on 25th May, 2019. Young Assistant Professors and Research Scholars from UIET Chandigarh and Dr SSBUICET Chandigarh who published their research work in reputed journals during the last year 
will also be honoured at this occasion. This includes 11 from UIET, PU and 4 from Dr SSBUICET, PU.
