UIPS, PU Faculty bags a major BIRAC research project

Chandigarh:

Under the scheme of Small Business Innovation Research Initiative (SBIRI) implemented through Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) a project worth Rs 113.07 lakh has been sanctioned to Dr Indu Pal Kaur, Professor of
Pharmaceutics, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University and Mr Jaspreet Singh Gulati, Director, Hitech Formulations Pvt Ltd, Chandigarh by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. The project has been funded with an aim to promote collaborative research on topical delivery of antifungal. The fund will further support the formulation of advanced products like cream, gel, lotion, and shampoos as per patented technology at industrial level.


        UIPS already has a licence agreement on this patented technology which is ready to go for scale-up at Hitech Formulations. This patented technology improves the stability of antifungal agents, possesses longer residence in skin, casues no or negligible local side effects and reduces risk of fungal resistance. Owing to these merits, the technology is proposed to have advantages over other marketed topical antifungal products.


        The collaboration between Professor Indu Pal Kaur, UIPS with several Pharmaceutical Industries including Hitech Formulations Pvt. Ltd., is perceived to translate the research carried out in the lab to a marketable product for the benefit
of the society.

Issue on Mental Health of Indian Journal of Psychology released

Chandigarh:

 A special issue on mental health of Indian Journal of Psychology was released by Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions and officiating Vice Chancellor, Panjab University.


        This issue has 25 articles contributed by some of the greatest experts in the field of mental health. The special significance of this issue is that it was dedicated to Professor Narendra Nath Wig (1932-2018), who was a world famous psychiatrist and founder of Dept of Psychiatry, PGI, Chandigarh.


        Prof Jha appreciated the efforts of the editorial team led by Prof Emeritus Jitendra Mohan, Dr Meena Sehgal, Prof Vipin Sobti, Prof Sanjeev Sharma, Dr.Archana SIngh. Dr. Meetu Khosla, Dr Shruti Shourie and Dr. Davinder Rana.


        Speaking on the occasion, Professor R K Singla, Dean Research said that this Journal brings special laurels to Panjab University as this has been included in the UGC Care list.


        Prof Jitendra Mohan said that this Journal carries on the message of Dr N N Wig who redefined clinical and psychiatric problems into mental health. Mental health concerns all, whether they are physicians, ayurvedic experts, yoga experts or people working in the field of positive psychology.


        This Journal is supported by ICSSR. Professor Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Panjab University , Mr Sidharth Wig, son of Professor N N Wig; Dr Joshi, Secretary to Vice Chancellor and other experts attended the sombre event.


        Paying tributes to Dr Narendra Nath Wig, Professor Mohan said that he was a remarkable psychiatrist, excellent healer and an even more remarkable human being.
       

The exact message given by Professor Mukundan, Prof Gupta, Prof Parker, Prof Priti Arun, Prof Chavvi, and Prof Meetu Khosla is that one has to fight a battle against depression, anxiety, suicide ideation and drug abuse by adopting modern as well as ancient strategies.  The Journal carries the message that in modern society, mental health should be given top priority.

Cleanliness Drive at IETVE

Chandigarh :

 The Mother Teresa Vanity Club of the Institute of Educational Technology and Vocational Education (IETVE), Panjab University, Chandigarh organized cleanliness drive, here todasy and Classroom Decoration to commemorates 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatama Gandhi. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Rekha Rani, Coordinator of the Club. The different groups of students of each class were assigned the specific area for the cleanliness drive. All the faculty members and students of the Institute participated in this cleanliness drive enthusiastically.   Also, Inter class ‘Classroom
Decoration Competition’ was held. The classroom of B.A.B.Ed. Semester-I was declared as the best decorated classroom by the judges- Mrs. Prabhdeep Kaur and Dr. Jagdeep Kumar.

PU Professor to Chair a Session in Asian Innovation Forum

Chandigarh September 30, 2019

Professor Rupinder Tewari, Coordinator, DST-Centre for Policy Research, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been invited to chair a session, ‘Future of SMEs and Startup Ecosystem’ during 5th Asian Innovation Forum to be held in Manila, Phillipines during October 3-5, 2019. Professor Tewari will also be delivering a scientific lecture on , ‘BIRAC-a Successful PPP Model for Stimulating Innovations (SMEs)’. In addition, he”ll dwell upon a study conducted by him and the scientific team of DST-CPR on recent inititaives of Government of India to stimulate Industry-Academia intercations in
Higher Education Institutes, National Research Laboratories and Industries.


        This forum has been created to make ‘Better Asia for Tomorrow’ through innovation as the expectations from the society has risen with increasing role of technology in our lives. Every year, the annual meeting of Asian Innovation Forum
attracts scientists, educationists and policy makers of Asian countries including Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Phillipines, Sri Lanka, Thailand etc. to share best practices for strenthening innovation ecosystem.

Happy Hearts Healthy Hearts Campaign at PU

Chandigarh September 28, 2019

 University Institute of Applied Management Sciences(UIAMS), in association with NSS Panjab University and Ojas Super Specialty Hospital Panchkula, organised ‘Happy Hearts Healthy Hearts Campaign’ at Panjab University Campus as a part of World Heart Day Celebrations. The theme of this year’s World Heart Day focuses on three important and pertinent aspects of cardiovascular health, and that is promotion of physical activity, healthy diet habits, and to create awareness against smoking.


        The Campaign was inaugurated at UIAMS premises, by Professor Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions along with Professor Upasana Joshi Sethi, Director UIAMS, and Professor Navdeep Sharma, Coordinator NSS. Professor Jha appreciated the students for being part of the world heart day celebrations, and apprised them of the importance
of ancient Indian values of following a disciplined life. The dignitaries and NSS program officers then flagged off the Quit Smoking Rally in which around 175 students from various departments of Panjab University took part. The students showcased the placards to spread awareness about the ill-effects of smoking, both on heart and on other organs of the body. The rally culminated at Student Centre in north campus, where a twenty minute aerobic exercise session was held in which the students, NSS program officers, Ojas hospital team, and faculty members of UIAMS took part.


        This session was guided by four volunteers from Hamari Kaksha, a non-profit organization based in Chandigarh, which provides education to underprivileged children and their mothers.


        This was followed by an educative talk on heart health by Dr.Anurag Sharma, Director and Chief Cardiologist, Ojas super specialty Hospital, Panchkula. 


        Dr.Anurag highlighted the importance of healthy diet, physical activity, and good sleep hygiene to keep heart healthy for a longer period. He also conveyed an important message, which is to avoid smoking and alcohol, as these are the major cause of most of the chronic diseases in later life, notably heart disease, stroke and cancer. He also stressed the importance of cultivating habits amongst the young students, as this is the best way to keep oneself stress free. At the end of the session, health diet snacks were distributed to all the students to bring in the awareness about ill effects of junk food and to promote healthy food choices.

PU Senate Meeting

Chandigarh September 28, 2019

As per the directions of Hon’ble Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Senate of Panjab University today considered the Agenda Item C-7 of Senate Meeting dated 22.08.2019, regarding extension in the term of appointment of Dean Student Welfare, Dean Student Welfare (Women) and Associate Dean Student Welfare. Prof. Raj Kumar, the Vice Chancellor, P.U., stated that, respecting the opinion and sentiments, emotions of the House, and also keeping in mind the best interests of the institution, the following was approved unanimously by the House: “That the recommendations of the Syndicate that Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare, Prof. Neena Capalash, Dean Student Welfare (Women) and Prof. Ranjan Kumar, Associate Dean Student Welfare, be given extension in their term of appointment for one more year, i.e.  up to 31.05.2020”.

Week-long celebration of Mahatama Gandhi Jayanti at PU

Chandigarh September 27, 2019

The Department of Gandhian & Peace Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised a week-long celebration of the Jayanti of Mahatma Gandhi from 23rd September, 2019 to 2nd October, 2019.

 Dr. Seema Malhotra introduced and welcomed the guests and elaborated the importance of the programme.

While delivering a lecture on “The Rising Menace of Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) & How to Curb It”, Professor Sanjay Kumar Bhadada, Department of Endocrinology, PGIMER, Chandigarh, educated and informed the gathering about the formula of a healthy lifestyle, to be followed by each and every individual alike. He further emphasised and motivated audience that Ideal body weight could be achieved by balanced diet and optimum exercise with restricted salt and calorie intake. He advised to follow a basic formulae to monitor weight (Height in CM – 100 = Ideal Body Weight) and told them to always remember “Waist is not Equal to Waste”.

Professor Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his presidential address emphasised that excess of everything is bad. Health is very important. One must eat balanced diet and to digest one have to exercise. He further emphasised that Food to be taken as a liquid and liquid to be taken as a food.


He also congratulated all the faculty members and others alike and proceeded to emphasise on the fact that we have to work hard further to achieve more. The Chairperson, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies & Honorary Director, Gandhi Bhawan, Dr. Ashu Pasricha, extended her warm thanks to all the invited guests and the attendees.

Lecture at PU

Chandigarh September 27, 2019

Professor Archana R Singh from the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered an interactive lecture on “The Infinite Dimensions of Art as Communication” as a part of the lecture series to celebrate the 550th year of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji   Birthday celebrations organised by the department of Art History & Visual Arts (Fine Arts). Prof Archana Singh is a member of many National Committees. This year she was nominated as Central Panel Jury member for the 66th Annual National Film Awards, Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of I&B, GOI She is also a Member of the Academic Council and Governing Council of Film and Television Institute of India by Ministry of I&B, GOI, Pune.

She has also held many administrative Positions during employment in Panjab University such as Warden, Kasturba Girls Hostel, Cultural Co-ordinator of Panjab University, Chairperson, School of Communication Studies, Coordinator, PU Radio,
Colloquium Coordinator, Editor, Panjab University Research Journal Social Sciences amongst others.

 Speaking on the occasion Professor Archana highlighted the various dimensions of art as a means of communication. She interacted with the students and guests and answered their queries. Professor Dr. Tirthankar Bhattacharya, Chairperson of the department informed the present audience that the department would be organizing
lectures and interactive sessions in the coming days to sensitive the students and art lovers about art as a visual medium of communication.

Workshop concluded at Music deptt. PU

Chandigarh September 27, 2019

Four days workshop from 24-27/09/2019 organised by Music Department, Panajb University, Chandigarh conducted by Dr. Harish Tiwari an Eminent Artist of Kirana Gharana, disciple of Pt. Bhim Sen Joshi. Lecture, Demonstration of different sessions on various aspects of tradition classical music were full of depth, soulful and very inspiring for the students.


Workshop ended today with soulful & blissful performance by Dr. Harish Tiwari. He was accompanied by Dr. Anil Kumar Sharma (Tabla), on harmonium by Sh. Rakes Kumar and vocal support by Mr. Mukesh Kumar, Ph.D Research Scholar of Department of music, Delhi University, New Delhi.
