The students of Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology, Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated Diwali with the inmates of Old age Home Sector 15, Chandigarh on 24.10.2019 by distributing fruits to the elderly. The students were very happy to interact with the elderly and received blessings in return from them. The joy of sharing made the students happy and they assured that every year they will be visiting the old age home on Diwali in future.

Students of Centre for Social Work, Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated Diwali with theme of “Green Deewali” with the Children of Aruna Asif Ali Trust Sector- 44 Chandigarh. The students organized Rangoli making competition and Chart Making competition on green Diwali. Children from Aruna Asif Ali Trust participated in said competitions. Students of Social Work Panjab University also aware those children about Green Diwali Concept and told them not to use crackers on Diwali. Students made them aware about the harmful effects of crackers on human health as well as on environment.
Social Work Students also spread massage among the children that instead of spending huge amount of money on crackers they can buy fruits, new clothes, books and other useful items of daily routine. In the end Bananas, Juice and Chocolates shared with Children of Aruna Asif Ali Trust by spreading a message that “Say No to Crackers and Go for Green Diwali”

The Department of Sanskrit, Panjab University Chandigarh organized “Deepostava” a celebration of Diwali festival as well as remembrance of “Martydom of Swami Dayanand Sarawati”. Prof V.K Alankar, Chairperson, Deptt of Sanskrit presided over the event. Competition of art & craft, rangoli making, folk songs and folk dance were also held. Being the martyrdom day of Swami Daynand Saraswati he was remembered with great zeal. It was urged to the students and the research Scholars to follow his footsteps of combining the Ancient Vedic Knowledge and reform. Dr. Vikram Kumar, Dr. Surendera Acharya and Dr. Sushma Alankar were also invited to give lectures on Indian Festivals and their significance, and Philosophy of Dayamnand Saraswati. Hemant Kaushik and Anshul Chaudhary of M.A. 1st Year also gave a short speech about Diwali and its cultural continuity. To create public awareness about the ill-effects of noise and smoke caused by firecrackers, NSS, Panjab University, held an awareness drive on ‘Say no to Crackers’ at Panjab University. The NSS volunteers stood at the entry gates of Panjab University as well as at student Centre to spread the word forward by various thought provoking slogans, holding placard and posters. The idea of the campaign was to celebrate Diwali ‘the festivals of light’ without harming the environment by giving up on crackers, lightening up with diyas rather than decorative lights and using natural colors for Rangoli.

Prof. PP Singh, founder of Journalism Education in India at Panjab University, Lahore in 1941 has been Posthumously Awarded by Joshi Foundation during the Media award Punjab 2018 for the category ‘outstanding contribution in Journalism Education’. The award was received by Prof. Archana R. Singh, School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh which includes a trophy, a certificate and Rs. 21000/- cash.
The Department proposes to utilize the award money for the ‘PP Singh Memorial Lecture Series’ which was initiated by the department last year.

Prof. S.K Tomar, Director, HRDC and Prof. Nandita, Dean International Students, Panjab University graced the joyous occasion and blessed the students. Dr Kanwalpreet Kaur Chairperson, IETVE welcomed the students and guests for responding to the invitation and being present for the occasion. Dr. Kalpana Thakur, the event Co-ordinator highlights the significance of Diwali. The events diya and candle decoration, Puja thali decoration, Rangoli making, Mehndi were organized. These events were followed by cultural program where students gave performances from different regions like Bengal, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. The main attraction of the event was Pre-Diwali fest: AAKRITI where students displayed different shopping stalls exhibiting their creativity and entrepreneurship enhancing life skills. A large number of students from different departments along with international students participated in the fest.

Department of History and its Researcher’s Society organised a seminar, here today on the theme “Historical Essence of India and Its Future” in the wake of Vigilance Awareness Week being observed by Panjab University, Chandigarh. Professor Anju Suri, Chairperson who introduced the theme of the Seminar, emphasised on the cultural and religious diversity prevalent in India and how it leads to the unity of our nation.
Professor M. Rajivlochan delivered the inaugural address. In his address, he drew the attention of audience to the fact that with changing times the changes are seen in cultural manners and customs for which the reality check is the dire need in order to assess our own progress and the progress of our civilization and country. The analysis in totality with all the positive and negative aspects enable us to come up with innovative practices for the growth of our personalities and our nation which can make our future prosperous and brighter.
The seminar was organised by the Department for students of MA who presented 17 papers relating with various subthemes such as historical and cultural aspects, legends and historical sources, popular historical personalities, fairs, customs, Indian laws, foreign travellers, religion, ancient educational institutions of India to present their own perspective of how India is, what are its future prospects and how our nation could be further developed. The presentations were appreciated by all the guests who lauded the efforts of the students to present varied perspectives to understand the idea of India and how these ideas in totality created the idea of India as sacred and ancient land of wisdom and culture.
The students’ seminar was attended by a large number of dignitaries which include Ms and Mr Amit Prasad (IPS), the Inspector General (Ropar), Mr. R. K. Taneja (Retired IAS officer), Mrs. and Mr. Prem Singh, (former Manager of the Tribune), Ms. Suman Rana who revealed that came for the seminar after reading about it in the morning newspaper and they encouraged students to keep doing such academic activities in future.

Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized ‘Shaheedon Ko Naman’ to mark the Police Commemoration Day here today. Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions and Officiating Vice Chancellor, Panjab University in his address lauded the role of police in maintaining peace and order in the society and joined the students and faculty in paying homage to the brave police martyrs by offering flowers.
Mr. Hemant Kumar, DIG, Border Security Force traced the history of Police Commemoration Day and said that on 21st October, 1959, a patrol party of CRPF was ambushed by the Chinese Army in Hot Springs, Ladakh, in which 10 brave hearts were martyred. Since then this day is commemorated to pay homage to the police martyrs. He motivated the students to join police force in large numbers Prof. Anil Monga, Chairperson (Officiating), Centre for Police Administration while welcoming the guests shared that every year Centre for Police Administration organizes this small event of Blood Donation Camp to pay homage to all those Police Personnel, who sacrificed their lives while performing their duties. He highlighted that the purpose is to create awareness and sensitize the students towards the sacrifices being made by the Police force.
The event was attended by Prof. M.C. Sidhu, Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Dr. Namita Gupta, Dr. Paramjit Singh Kang, Dr. Gaurav Gaur along with Guest Faculty, Research Scholars and Students of Centre for Police Administration.

A lecture cum quiz and a slogan writing competition was organized at University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University, Chandigarh , here today to celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Ms. Ravinder Sahi, Senior Director, ETDC, Mohali, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India, was the speaker and the chief guest of the event. Prof. Savita Gupta, Director UIET and faculty members of ECE department graced the event with their presence.
The session was inaugurated with a lamp lighting ceremony and welcome speech for the guest. The talk by Ms. Ravinder Sahi was mostly focused on the life and achievements of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. It was more of an interactive session where she interacted and asked questions from students. She motivated students and teachers to go to the website www.abdulkalam.com and take the oath as a student or a teacher. She motivated everyone to read the amazing books authored by Dr. Kalam. This was followed by some childhood stories of Dr. Kalam and how he had struggled throughout to reach such a honorable position. Overall, the session was motivating, inspiring, interactive and fun. The session came to an end by presenting a token of gratitude to the chief guest and to the Director UIET.
After the event, a slogan writing competition was held where students participated and showcased their art skills.
